    I was raised on Catch wrestling through the Shooto style where Erik Paulson built his legacy of experience. It's true that Erik teaches everything that he's good at, and it does require a certain level of talent dynamics to perform as he did. The less talented that do practice under Paulson who are dedicated have been attending seminars regularly for instructor certification to make up for it. 😁Basically.

    I can tell you right now - as a guy who taugh students at times - what makes a good teacher is someone who can relate to people and understand the students' rhythm, aggression, comprehension, etc....and teach them within their strengths and limitations of what they can do. The teach himself isnt by default a great fighter. It is his/her ability to convey an understanding of information for the student to be able to 'keep up' with the level of energy given to them by their teacher....so that they can becoime greater people.
    It is up to the teacher to apply enough hardness/softness in a controlled fight/sparring session. It's not the role of the teacher to up their own personal ego. It is up to the teacher to challenge the student enough to push them to become greater, not lesser.
    Here's the really important part:
    The teacher also ends up learning as much from the student as the student from the teacher. I have certainly taught my students way too harshly in retospect, and have sharpened my way of teaching them in much better ways. That takes time. That takes experience. We are all learning, and it never ends.

    Damn Ramsey. It really is interesting if there is some new great warrior every day who never lost single match or never failed at anything in life. We have so many undefeated warriors on the internet. Internet really makes it easier to be a weak man. Life has been too easy for those guys, and the reality will hit the face eventually. Or they already got hit and they cant take it.
    Good video man! And i really hope your knee will get better! Take care brother and blessings for you and your family!❤

    I came up during the 80's and so I was aware of Dux, and other MA characters like him. I don't think many of us really believed his claims deep down, but I got to admit I miss that kind of fantastical era when you'd pick up a magazine or video and see somebody doing some pretty mystical type stuff . It was fun! I'm glad things like the UFC came along and all that followed, but there was something about going into a school and there was incense burning and art you couldn't read on the walls and cheap baubles and you were convinced you were going to learn some ancient super secret stuff.

    In my view, the difference between actual fights and other combat sports is in whether the main goal and way to win is to actually do damage or to simulate damage. In MMA, boxing, Muay Thai, and similar sports, you mostly win by doing more damage, or at least the intention of most competitors is to do damage to the opponent. In BJJ, wrestling, fencing, sport Taekwondo and other combat sports, the main way of winning is to simulate damage. In wrestling, it's by dominating position and pinning your opponent (in theory, you could then beat them from there). In BJJ, the goal is to either dominate position, or get your opponent to tap from your submission. Yes, sometimes you might break things or put someone to sleep, but that's usually not the actual intention. In sport Taekwondo, Karate and fencing, the goal is to touch the person and score a point, rather than to hit the person and cause actual harm. You may be able to knock people out in Taekwondo, but it's not the primary gameplan for winning the match.

    I watched BloodSport 118 times! I've learned ever line. I've learned ever move (including the one where the guy does a somersault backwards, which made me land on my head 😅 and then I got it right).....
    nobody wanted this story to be more true than I did. Yea....it's bullshit. Sadly.
    It inspired me to train hecticly for the next 25 years! (though I never broke any bricks).

    Ramsey, honestly I would not worry that much if your serious left leg and knee injury forces you to retire early from your MMA coaching job in regards to your future career options. I can see you becoming a college professor making a decent salary teaching classes at your pick of good universities right there in Shanghai. You ARE that gifted and intelligent of a teacher.

    • @RamseyDewey
      @RamseyDewey  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I appreciate your confidence, but you’re not worried because you’re not in this situation. I don’t have a PhD. I don’t have the resources to acquire one. I’m not going to be a college professor anywhere, let alone at a Chinese university.
      I taught classes (not as a professor) at Shanghai Normal University when I first moved to China. I made about $500 a month. Not a decent salary.

      Standing up when someone has a closed guard position can be a very viable strategy in BJJ. You have no know what to do once you stand up though!

    Thinking martial arts actors are great fighters is like thinking that figure skaters can win hockey championships. It's 2 slightly related skill sets, but being good at one does not make you good at another. There are actors who can fight (Tom Hardy is a decent jujitsu grappler, the Green Ranger had a decent MMA career); there are fighters who can create good movie stunt performances (like Gina Carano), but in reality, some of the most important fighting skills such as range, timing and setups are complete opposites in stunt performances versus actual fighting. Bruce Lee's kicks didn't make him a great fighter any more than Keanu Reeves's shooting skills make him an elite operator.

    Frank Dux got fans?! WOW. I consider him one stop above those who wave their arms and everybody falls to the ground. At least Dux can fight. Or so I'm told.
    As far as bruce lee goes,and being a great teacher. I would say it depends on what your teaching. In bruce's case he had a couple of JKD school (as I understood.) And he managed to reach a good deal of people. I would say that makes him a good teacher.Within that group he was teaching. But I think it also depends on what the student is trying to learn,from his teacher. A lot of X factors

    hi ramsey, regarding if star trek is better than star wars, i prefer star trek b/c there are way more hours of star trek than star wars.
    yes, star wars has been catching up lately with tv shows, but star trek literally has 100s of episodes of entertainment.
    but i still think 90s trek was the best - i don't like the modern trek movies & tv shows 😟

    • @RamseyDewey
      @RamseyDewey  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Elon Musk is only mentioned in Star-Trek Discovery by Captain Lorca, a being from an alternate evil universe where Musk apparently existed. The real Star-Trek timeline diverged heavily from our own in
      1986. By 1996, the Eugenics war decimated the human population. PayPal never would have existed, and Elon Musk never would have become a billionaire industrial. By 2026, World War 3 started and the planet got nuked. SpaceX, Tesla, etc didn't happen.
