Great! Video and thanks! The Hewed reels are a total game changer. Literally threw all my old reels in the trash and replaced all of them with the Hewes reels. So worth a little extra initial investment!

Two things make the Hewes 35mm reel much easier to load than other modern steel reels. First, the spiral wire is a much thicker gauge, so its groves load the film in place better during loading. Second, that two-tab piece you start the film on insures the the film is centered in the reel at start, makes it almost impossible to screw up loading. Other reels use a spring clip which grabs whatever part of the film end you insert, whether centered on the reel or not. Uncentered film at the start makes loading nearly impossible.

Taking a 35mm class right now and all the reels are crap. So i said ill buy my own. Def love this reel. The class has only 1 and people fight like gladiators for it.

I have one, bought used. Whilst it’s better than other steel reels it’s had a hard life and (like all my steel reels) is a bit bent out of shape to the point it’s impossible to avoid a kink towards the end of a 36exp roll. I’ve lost patience with attempting to bend and make-do and I’m going back to Paterson.

I purchased mine after using 2 bent reels that drove me bonkers. I treat that reel like my most prized possession. I need to buy a couple more. They are so easy.

@@GreyGhost-r4z Inspired by your enthusiasm I checked last night and I have a 2nd in much better shape.
I think I should keep one small steel tank for that good reel, for when I want to process just one roll with little chemistry. Cheers.

I used the Paterson plastic reels for many years until recently just out of curiosity I purchased a used off-brand steel reel set online. I was shocked at how superior these steel reels are. They're super easy to load 120 film! I'm thinking the Hewes reels would even be easier but mine just have the clip to hold the film. At the most it now takes me 2 minutes to load 120. With the plastic reel it often took me a hour or more to get the film loaded and sometimes I damaged the film in the process.

The only problem, with Hewes reels is their price. Here in mid=2024, a 35mm reels (one) varies from $50 to $70 US. Years ago, they were as relatively expensive, so I went to eBay to shop for old Nikkor reels from the 1950s to mid-60s. These older Nikkors were made very much like the Hewes, with thicker wire and better tolerances than the later Japanese generic products sold by Omega and the like. Having made that investment during the flip to digital, I paid very little for an extensive collection of reels in all sizes.

I was lucky. I purchased a pro photographers entire darkroom for $80 back in 2002. Tons of steel reels but they were from the 50’s and 60’s. Some were bent and it literally drove me nuts. So I bought the Hewes reel and it was finally a joyful experience, well except for the price 😵

@@GreyGhost-r4z Right, I should have mentioned that buying any steel reel carries the risk of it having been bent out of alignment. The only steel reel I purchased new was in 1959, when I set up my first darkroom at age 13. It was a one roll 35mm tank and reel package. Cost about $12-15, a princely sum in 1959 dollars for a developing tank. Back then, the tank and top were fitted steel on steel with no gasket. It leaked a little, but back then, it was the only game in town, apart from the plastic Yankee($5) and Ansco ($8) tanks, which operated more like today's Patterson without its leaky plastic top cover. The curse of the old Nikkor tanks was that to minimize leakage, the tops were custom fitted to each tank. Of course, when you bought several and mixed up the tops, they leaked a lot more. The steel tank with a plastic top took forever to hit the market, for no reason I know, but it solved leakage. (Same issues with the fitted steel caps as well, which get stuck and are a general pain in the ass.)

Thanks for the idea. It happened because I needed to use a cpap machine for sleep apnea. I got the machine after jumping through all of the medical hoops. For like 4 months I would go to bed and wear the facemask hooked to the machine, but wakeup in the morning with the mask on the floor and not remember how it got there. I would wake up with a huge headache.
Over the many years leading up to my sleep apnea diagnosis, I would go to the doctor complaining about headaches. I would have them several times per month. I thought it was allergies, but it turns out it was Oxygen Deprivation. This is the TELL TALE sign that you have sleep apnea besides snoring. IF you are experiencing these things go see your doctor or a sleep specialist. If you choose not to get treated, eventually as you continue to suffer from sleep apnea, you will have a Stroke. That's what the end game looks like ... A Stroke !!
Getting tested does not hurt and there are no needles or blood tests involved. It's a piece of cake. But, just admitting you might have a problem or getting treated is a huge hurdle for guys. It's a pride issue. The other issue I personally suffered with was that in my nose I had a deviated septum. The cartilage in my nose grew closed over time as I grew up from a child. It was blocking 90% of my nasal airway on one side of my nose. I never really knew. It seems like you would notice a change, but it happens over decades and you just don't even think about it. So back to the Ear, Nose and Throat Doctor and I chose to have nasal surgery. It was a piece of cake. About a 2 month recovery time and now I still have to use the Sleep Apnea machine, but I get a full 7 to 8 hours per night and I am taking care of my health.
After the nasal surgery, I could smell flowers, and I could taste. Orange chicken actually tastes like Oranges. I could smell people who wore perfume/cologne. The first time in forever that I could smell flowers, I actually wept. With a deviated septurm your sense of smell and taste just becomes almost non existant.
One thing people don't realize is that our noses everyday go through a nasal cycle. Do some research on the Nasal Cycle. The body switches nostrils every 4 to 6 hours. You can breathe out of one side of your nose and then it switches. Before surgery and when I was wearing my CPAP, I would go to bed feeling like I was suffocating and finally just fall asleep, and then not notice when my nasal cycle would kick in, and my good nostril would close off and my other nostril airway would try to open but it was blocked, and then I would partially wake up from asphyxia and tear off my mask while I was sleeping. It took a couple of weeks to figure it out. After the surgery (Septoplasty), I can breathe out of both sides of my nose. Life is wonderful again.
If you partner tells you, you snore.. call your doctor and get tested. Your very Life depends on it. Go get treated. Do it today. You will have a stroke at some point so just do it now and start feeling great again.
That was my journey with that. :)

Useless GTA V I am not sure it was interesting, though many people never get treated because they are afraid of the stigma of the machine and the hose. My next door neighbor was diagnosed with sleep apnea but he didnt want to use one next to his bed, because what would his dates think 🤔 lolololol. He’s 57. I told him whats worse ? Death 💀 or embarrassment. He said embarrassment.
