I'm so excited that dev is getting excited about spatial audio. It truly is the way it's meant to sound. Nine Inch Nails With Teeth and The Downward Spiral in surround are amazing, everything Steven Wilson puts out in spatial, and special mentions to War Of Being and Watershed mixes.
Devin Townsend Atmos mixes are exactly what I need in life. If I get thrown on death row, my final meal will literally just be a Devin Townsend Atmos listening party.
22:18 this is such a relief to hear. I love ALL of your work but I sometimes feel that heavy devi gets lost in the mix of all of it. The idea of going "back to basics" is so cool.
@gabrielstevens41 yeah, me too. I'm very excited for this. I think I have more enthusiasm for that idea than the usual stuff... but then again, I often switch between the newer stuff and older (simple) stuff. Anyway, I really love this guy and wish he would just adopt me at 36yo.
Thanks for explaining Atmos - the 3d placement of sound is something I wanted to do since high school. It was driven by playing in the school band, and being able to hear the different instruments coming from different positions; it sounded so different to listening to a band... The sound and feeling from sitting in the middle of the sound was fantastic. Now to go down this rabbit-hole. Thanks Dev.
Dev, monolithic rainy Ocean Machine style metal is something I think a lot of us would enjoy, whilst waiting for The Moth. I enjoy most of the music you create, but I loved the heaviness of your Melbourne show and was so happy that you played so many Strapping songs. You said that whilst you enjoy the Strapping music it isn’t who you are anymore, but everything you have said and done in your life is still, and always will be who you are, and it’s important to embrace that fact and draw inspiration from the good and bad of our journey. Happy holidays everyone.
Everything sounds very intriguing to me. From the minimal desert, warm, beige color idea (sounds a bit like Ki to me,which I loved), to the simple more heavy focused stuff like Ocean Machine and Accelerated Evolution, which I also both freakin loved! I'm excited ☺️
The claps on Steven Wilson's "Impossible Tightrope" were the most impressive thing to me on that whole album lol. I can't wait to hear what you're creating with Atmos. Happy holidays ✨
Thanks Dev I am loving these updates and the sound of the next phase of projects. It is so good to have this window into the process and your good self. Thank you.
This was a juicy update. The angles you're working with in these simultaneous projects both sound like exactly what I come to you for. The wet and dry comparison between them paints a picture that I'm excited to hear. I have no experience with really high quality production like what Atmos sounds like it's enabling you to find. I can imagine how that will feel once it's fully formed. For now, enjoy the journey and I'll be hanging out for when it's ready.
High quality audio is life changing (for me anyways). My only grievance with Devy's recent albums is that they were'nt in hi-res (a step below Atmos) so I'm ecstatic about this update. If you're a big music-lover like me, it's worth looking into a good set of headphones and the amplifier and DAC or whatever you can afford. A little research and a few hundred dollars can change how you hear music forever in my opinion. At the very least, a good set of earbuds. Just don't go crazy with it like I did lol its definitely worth it but my wallet still hates me :')
Hi Devin. Just a quick encouragement from me before I myself are off to dump an ax handle. Do what you feel like, do what you want man, even if it gets five times more abstract than The Puzzle and Devlab, even if you turn into a professor in electroacoustics, acousmatics and ambisonics from Montreal. Well, more meticulous in abstraction or not, just as long as you listen to yourself and no one else, that’s a win. Happy holidays, Dev.
I have been working on learning Atmos for a while now, and I see this popping up everywhere about everyone having thoughts about it. I was just talking to my wife how people in the metal community kinda of hate on new technology (i.e. amp modeling) and how everyone acts like they never said anything negative about it. All that to say is thank you for your positive outlook on this! I have been enjoying the process as well!
Somehow you show up and articulate things I’m thinking about but way better than I could ever articulate myself, and with a stronger voice and bigger backing tracks! Godspeed on the recovery. You have been an instrumental part of me dealing with my health challenges, emotions and loss of words for the last 1.5 years. Soundscapes have been a HUGE part of fighting Leukemia and, more so, the Leukemia treatments and mind altering drugs. I guess I must have discovered you in the early 90s without knowing it. My last purchased cassette tape and then first CD were both Steve Vai albums of the time. And I remember Vai from the late night shows of the day. I rediscovered you and Vai’s more recent works pre pandemic around 2018. Your quarantine concerts were great during that isolation where I wasn’t quarantined , rather an “essential worker” being micromanaged by Zoom, but even more so, the Christmas quarantine concert ( repeated before Halloween of 2022) and Puzzle profoundly helped me big time with isolation and thoughts of doubt in the hospitals. Happy Merry Christmas to you too. I’m excited to learn more of Atmos recordings. Description conjures up throwback memories to my friends ‘s dad’s old reel to reel quadraphonic listening days in the late 70s which I had only limited exposure to and really curious how it will sound with just headphones or require building a small setup at home or say in a medical facility MRI machine!! 😎 🤣 🤔
Whatever you put your name to, whether it's alt-country or screaming metal, or any myriad style in between, we the fans know it's going to be completely awesome.
All of this was so exciting to listen to. It should've been obvious all this time, but it's both reassuring and inspiring to hear that bringing what you love into the world is such a human experience. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your insight.
Just want to express my appreciation for taking us on this ride with you. Watching the creative process unfold is such a treat. Thanks Dev! Merry Christmas.
That's the thing I always liked about Dev, when he does "heavy", it's his own. So dynamic, rich, a lot of substance. It's something that he simply is really really really good at.
I'm finding these updates surprisingly really relatable. It's familiar thought processes. Over-analysing, self doubt, realising you're thinking way too hard and you're making the simple too complicated for the sake of it. Also, I knew of Atmos but I didnt quite get it until now you explain the instruments aren't fighting within the same bandwidth. So cheers for that, interesting stuff. Merry Xmas! 🤘
I just love how Dev not only talks about his whereabouts of the writting process, but also takes time to encourage us, the audience to push and also finish our projects. Much love Dev, waiting eagerly to listen to the final encarnation of your current endeavor.
Have a kick ass Christmas! Thank you for sharing the perspective on Atmos … super helpful to consider doing it from the get go and appreciate the idea to let go of the usual stereo approaches and just embrace the atmos algorithms to handle the space.
Absolutely love these updates!! Keep em coming! They are so incredibly helpful and even as an artist (painter) I can strongly relate. The technical info is fascinating even though I don't know much about mixing. It certainly will add a depth of understanding when listening to your new creations in the future. Wishing you continued healing brother and restful week!
If you want to listen to something written for and recorded in Atmos try Steven Wilson's Harmony Codex, the Blu-Ray Audio version. Love these updates and can't wait for the new album.
Love hearing you talk about the process, and really love seeing you get excited talking about something that you are passionate about. Have a good one Dev! 😎👍
Merry Christmas to the Townsend Family, Friends and Supporters. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. A wonderful holiday. Looking forward to the new material. whichever comes first.
I'm so happy that you were able to stop the opioids as soon as possible. I know you've been sober for decades - but I had friends that got relapsed after surgery. This all sounds so magical. I love that you're off the road and we get to be in on all of these wonders and looks behind the curtain. We get so much out of the monster amount of effort that you put into everything you do. Merry Christmas Dev!!
The way dev is talking about these ideas/ feelings that tend to pop into existence is like when someone is scratching your back and another spot becomes itchy
I'm very much into surround music, especially 5.1 (I don't have Atmos gear) so I'm really happy you're going that way..I'm the guy who asked in the Lightwork Q&A video if and when you will be re-releasing your back-catalogue in surround music. I'm really hoping to listen to Ocean Machine and Infinity in 5.1 someday.
Such a wonderful update. Dev, if you know you’re good, then you know good people follow you. So whatever you do…it will be good, and good by us. Just do what you do!
I remember seeing you live in a small bar in Burnaby in the mid 2000s and you rocked, and I was enthralled by your music (including the instrumental encore). I can't say I've been a consistent listener (Ki was an absolute masterpiece imo which is kinda where I left off). I did see you live with DT this past summer (2023). I keep coming back your music and I absolutely love this "artist's journey" you've been taking with these podcasts and updates. It's revitalizing for my own creative spirit. Thank you and keep it up. We love you!
Had hernia operation 4 days ago. Only took one pill of that opiate shite. I started sweating profusely and almost fainted. I took stool softener and psyllium husk daily and no issues with axe handling lol. Glad you are feeling better Devin.
Great update Dev. It mostly went over my head with the Atmos stuff but what stuck is when you said… this is the way it should have always been… or something like that and yes… I get a little time off, 4 days. Same with New Years. Plus, my employer was generous again this year. Last year I spent 4g’s to mic up my drumset and get a simple recording program. This year I’m gonna buy some merch I have wanted for awhile. One of them is The Puzzle box set. So… Dev. I pretty much stumbled into your music. I’ve went through your podcasts through the pandemic and have really appreciated getting to know the WHY behind the music. A few years back on TH-cam I stumbled across Transcendence and before that I stumbled across the idea of Sacred Geometry through a Tool fan magazine. This led to a year long rabbit trail of understanding what that is. HUGE topic. I could babble about that but will just stick to saying THANK YOU for sharing your original podcast series and also this new series. Something resonates pretty strong. Thanks again Dev. Blessings on you and yours man. 💀’s and🌈’s- Waymesie
Thanks for the update Dev. It's good that you are managing the pain without opiates. So cool to hear the process you take for new music. It's exciting to hear the musical landscape you have in mind with the 2 guitars, heavy drums and bass. I'd love to be involved in something like that. You take care man.
A good rule of thumb with pain meds, especially the addictive kinds, is if you can manage without taking them and it's not a something you have to take as part of a treatment definitely do without. There's all kinds of healthy things with pain management without developing any bad habits, holistics and mind over matter meditation type stuff. Hope you get well soon, and enjoy the Holidays! 🎄🎁⛄❄🌟 Also glad to hear whenever an artist has a creative breakthrough with an idea that seems to find it's place in that creative puzzle of ever changing and shifting forms. That's the way I always do it, when it fits somewhere and instantly feels right you know that's where it goes. Some things take a bit of time to get there but it's often times a mosaic of a bigger idea that you don't quite know what the picture is until you step back and realize "Oh! That's what it's about" Then it's free to develop into a language that has a voice. And sometimes that inner voice dosen't say anything particularly mind blowing, just wants to enjoy a bit of good weather, appreciate the beauty in it, and knows that's what you needed right now. I think the best kinds of art are like that. Put it in music form, and well, now you have something. A moment worth going in that snapshot of life. 😊🤘
Earlier this year I started using a second speaker cab in my guitar rig to have duel mono or stereo effects from both my left and right. At first it sounded a bit weird but now it feels like this is how it should always sound and there is no going back. Can’t wait to hear your new material on my atmos system. Thanks for these updates and have a merry Christmas / happy holidays to you and yours. Love you Dev❤️
I am a huge Atmos fan and I really connect with your axe-handle problem, (I had the same issue this morning after two really reflux sick days). I can't wit to hear what you produce with these new thoughts and ideas.
I only was on opiates for a few days after a hernia repair, about 8 years ago Good GOD i hated those so much - i was taking ibuprofen only 3 days out, passed my own Ax Handle, and felt way better after that point
Devin, thank you so much for the update, seeing the struggle in the process makes me feel better about my own struggles. I am curious about how would it would be possible to replicate the Atmos sound on headphones, but if even the stereo mix sounds better when recorded on Atmos, then we all win! I hope next year goes well for all of us.
Merry Christmas, brother. I never had a hernia, my cousin did. And he didn’t like taking stuff either, and it’s was scary to see him going through that stuff when he had that, and finally surgery. Oof! 😂Hope your good man, just Take it easy bro. And we love you and just go and be yourself, take the time man. We will be here , and good to see you talking, about the process. But no need to rush anything.
Hey Devin - I’m not sound engineer - just a fan. Your insights on how atmos shapes your work are fantastic. after being underwhelmed by what I heard I now understand the early stage the industry is in - and the creative opportunities. Looking forward to it!
Merry Christmas Dev! Thanks for diving into the Atmos stuff. As an avid audio enthusiast, and musician/producer, I'm really excited to get into it myself. I can't wait to hear what you're doing with it!🤘🤘🤘
In the home theater world with atmos. Most theater rooms run dual subs as it gives a more even response across the room and usually kills off the nulls in bass that tend to happen in a room with a single subwoofer. Chased a dead spot on my room for years with the bass and once I set up dual 12 inch subs vs a single 12 , the dead spot disappeared
That's awesome to hear your thoughts on Atmos mixing. I've been listening to 5.1 and Atmos mixed music for years, and when the engineer understands what can be done with the extra space to make it more immersive not just gimmicky or in your face, then it can be the best mixed personal concert possible. Amazing 5.1/Atmos mixes: Steven Wilson the future bites Atmos Dark side of the moon Atmos/5.1 Wish you were here 5.1 Opeth Pale Communion 5.1 Roger waters amused to death 5.1 Hotel California 5.1 Haken fauna Atmos
Everything i hear about Atmos as both a tech junkie and a novice audio engineer is fascinating and i can't wait until the equipment becomes cheap enough for hobbyists to get to experience it. If i'm parsing this right, it sounds like you have The Moth, this desert aesthetic project, and this simpler heavy project all going from this writing process. It'll be interesting to see how that all shakes out and i'm very excited for the simpler heavy thing because the themes you've mentioned have been where my head's been at for a few years now.
The Atmos mixing process sounds so exciting. I’d really love to one day get the gear to listen and mix in atmos myself. I’m dreaming of being fully immersed in crushing black and death metal. That would be so sick.
So I had inguinal hernias. Bi lateral so 2 of them. I was only 28 at the time and had surgery. Most pain I ever was in was immediately after waking up from surgery. They gave me tremedol and lorazapam for pain and that was worse than the pain. I know what you mean. Last thing you need after hernia surgery is to be constipated. Sucked but the best thing for me was after the 8 weeks recovery I kept moving and started very slowly strength training the area and avoid chronic pain later in life. Now I'm back to being able to lift at most my own body weight. Very important to break ip that scar tissue but only as a doctor recommends I used my insurance and paid for a physical therapist. Iam a crane mechanic so I need my body and strength. Take it easy and stay on contact with nurses over the phone and ask for advice. It helped me with anxiety of causes a tear In the mesh. The reason also I had 2 hernias was a birth defect and a oil barrel fell on me and I pushed it of with all my might and adrenaline then after felt what that popping was. Good luck and be safe. Love your music and work. Much love from washington.
Merry Christmas Dev ! I’ve had 2 hernia surgeries and the meds are the worst and I got what you described. Dont know who gets hooked on it and enjoys that ! LOL
Hi Dev, It was awesome to hear you talk about Atmos. I've been interested in this tech since The Orb and Gilmour used 360 reality Audio. There is nobody who can take this to the moon like you. I am really stoked to see (hear) where you go with this. The place you are in at this time and these tools have alined . Man the future is bright. Have a great holiday. P.S, Big Mike Grier ( Puddles) told me he did a thing with you , I think during Covid, but didn't say what it was and I can't seem to find anything. ????
Puddles participated in “The Puzzle” project. I can’t pinpoint where his part is, but he’s in there somewhere. To be fair, so are hundreds of other folks, lol.
This is interesting because I'm in the same place, albeit on a shoestring budget. I've got a way that I can make Atmos records (just utilising consumer hi-fi gear), and I've got a vision for my record. BUT it's starting to feel like WORK and I'm drawn down sidelines to make other things..... even though I have all the toys I could possible need now, I've bought new guitars and everythings ready to go. I'm like, now that it's built, eh, maybe I'll just stare at my phone today or play Zelda. I think I can relate on some level, basically.
The Moth's first 'movement' was not at all what we were expecting

It's really awersome to hear you be so open with us, and im sure it's cathartic for you as well
Happy Holidays and I wish you a speedy recovery!!! 🍀💜🍀💜🍀
Cheers Devy! Looking forward to everything you release. Hope you have a restful and lovely holidays!

Love the updates. This one made me go write a riff, go figure.
Hope you have many weeks of "Yeah!".
These are the most inspiring videos on the internet haha, honestly Dev! Cheers !
I only was on opiates for a few days after a hernia repair, about 8 years ago
Good GOD i hated those so much - i was taking ibuprofen only 3 days out, passed my own Ax Handle, and felt way better after that point
I did a 5.1 mix on one of my older scifi flicks nearing fifteen years ago. It does feel a bit better visualizing the mix appropriately.
Thanks for the update. Even if I only tinker around with Cubase, it's awesome to get new perspectives for mixing and using rooms from you.
I got all tour albums....downloaded BUT, now, for Christmas, i am buying them all ❤ Merry Christmas, GENIAL Devin 🍀⭐⚡🙏
Get well soon, boss. Much love.
Honestly anything you write I will enjoy.
Merry Christmas Dev. Always love and get excited for your updates ❤
I've got a nice 7.1 system, looks like I'm going to have to add the four over head speakers and Atmos processor.
Hey Devin - I’m not sound engineer - just a fan. Your insights on how atmos shapes your work are fantastic. after being underwhelmed by what I heard I now understand the early stage the industry is in - and the creative opportunities. Looking forward to it!
Thanks, Devin. My project is doing well also. Tske care.
Passing an Axe Handle needs to be an album title
If anybody is going to utilise this tech to the very best of its potential its Devin Townsend!
Dry desert. Going with the flow. You got me thinking of QOTSA.
That's awesome to hear your thoughts on Atmos mixing. I've been listening to 5.1 and Atmos mixed music for years, and when the engineer understands what can be done with the extra space to make it more immersive not just gimmicky or in your face, then it can be the best mixed personal concert possible.
Amazing 5.1/Atmos mixes:
Steven Wilson the future bites Atmos
Dark side of the moon Atmos/5.1
Wish you were here 5.1
Opeth Pale Communion 5.1
Roger waters amused to death 5.1
Hotel California 5.1
Haken fauna Atmos
Merry Christmas Father Devin!!!
@@gnagdogg21 Thanks man. 😊
Enjoy your holiday Christmas holiday Dev, hope it's a good one 😁🎄
Merry Christmas Dev. ❤🎄
I hate pain killers too. They put me in a fog, and I need my wits about me.
An axe handle?... Oh my! Sounds like the title track on the next album perhaps?
Merry Christmas Devin!!!
