I last sailed the Atlantic in 17days on a 46ft yacht. Loved it. I can't begin to imagine how uncomfortable, punishing and scary it would be to do it in a yacht of this size. No amount of money would lure me onto it. Madness.
You drive a hard bargain. Alright, I'll give you five bucks to do it.
@@BigPoppieSeed I sailed the Atlantic in a topper dinghy Portsmouth to NY and back nonstop with only a compass and a wooly jumper.
@@BigPoppieSeed Hard to say only had a Compass and a jumper no clock you see. I'd say about 4 months. In those days there was no GPS, phones or internet the only way to communicate was signal fire, two cups and a bit of string. Life was tough in those days kid let me tell yeh. Took a 40 foot swell on the way back snapped the mast. Rowed the last 800 miles. Some day ill write a book

@@BigPoppieSeed Son, I've sailed evey sea, been an admiral in multiple navies, flew tomcats off a carrier and completed Top Gun on SAGA megadrive in every difficulty level.

Two more things I think he'll need is overhead shade & some sort of padding on those shoulder belts.

Just staying in that vessel for a week on dry land would be a huge accomplishment if you ask me, living in it for a quarter of a year whilst crossing the Atlantic ocean is just utter and pure madness... I love it! Hope he succeeds, wish him al the best and save travels!

Can I suggest adding hand-grips (like bicycle handlebars) to assist with locking your body in place? Forcing your arms outwards with nothing to hold onto will get very tiring very quickly (it's an odd group of muscles you'd be using). I'd recommend some setup which allows you to put your hands in a couple (or more) different positions, to spread the stress around to different muscle groups. Nothing worse than being locked into one position for too long (I was a long-distance cyclist in my youth, and now a long-distance motorcyclist). even moving your grip from 'vertical' - thumbs at the top - to 'horizontal' - thumbs pointing at each other - can make a huge difference in comfort and (importantly) stamina....
He should just cut out the middleman and wear a straightjacket, because he's insane to do this.
He could have a set of road bike drop bars in there, they've got a lot of hand position options
I think he could make it more comfortable to cut it losses and spend time with his kids.. This is selfish as fuck. Can anyone see radio equipment or radar? Lights?
@@tbrowniscool Judging by his age I'd assume his kids are adults or close to it now and it's not like he's gonna be gone for years. Plus he has an AIS transponder which means he's not gonna get run over by a container ship and the only other reason for radar is to see approaching weather but since he can't really change course too much and it's already basically a lifeboat he just has to wait it out. It sounds like a super intense adventure but it seems like his family is supportive and even though there is danger present, I highly doubt he'll die doing this.

I've sailed the North Atlantic for years while in the Navy. The punishment taken by the ship was unbelievable, making this venture borderline crazy. Godspeed.

In that such confined space ,he would need to wear a crash helmet , neck brace arm & leg protection ,as he will be bobbing about & thrown around like a cork in rough seas . Crazy idea . I,M,V.H.O..
I think anyone going out onto that ocean on a normal boat is mostly nuts. Too many widows on this island.
I love the twin torpedo tubes on the sides. However, if I was doing this I would make the boat one meter long but at least 5 meters wide. That way you can smash the record in comfort.
It already weighs almost half a ton. Can you imagine what it would weigh if it was any wider?..😂

A very experienced sailor, a custom designed and constructed boat and every conceivable detail well thought through, this is clearly a highly professional approach to the challenge.
I respect the approach he's taken, he's very professional and responsible in what he's doing and how he's setting out to do it.

I beg to differ, those screws hanging down inside his cockpit are absolutely dangerous, and while he is being bashed around in 50knots he will tear his limbs on those, insane adventure.

Thank you for not having the usual automatic response everyone has of "he must be insane!1". These record-setters and ultra-athletes of various kinds are every time very collected and rational people, so much so that the usual day to day would kill them with boredom. I think the guy and the vessel are up for the challenge, and I'll be eager to see about his success!
I would trim the bolts near your knees and put smooth cap nuts on the treads to avoid scrapes and tears of gear as the snag on those bolts...you may not see them sitting i the boat but in the video they look ominus!
He mentioned there will be more padding inside so hopefully he does the things you suggest as part of final preparations.

1 thing id add is some sort of shade or cover for that bubble window as it will get crazy heat with just a little sun comming through ...it will be like a magnafine glass ... for times if you need an hours sleep in the day when at anchor ... it will make huge difference
I think that it’s going to be a test of endurance in those confined quarters. I wonder about insulation, heating and cooling on the trip.

considering the closed quarters I think the simple fact of him closing the dome and his body heat will bring up the temp to "tolerable" temps if necessary. plus he is doing it based on what he said in "summer time" which should help a bit.

Not counting that you have to pray for other boats not going over you as you can't do litterally anything to avoid them.
Intensely boring and uncomfortable mostly.
This thing will end up wrapped around the propeller of a Maersk container ship. I hope this guys legacy doesn't end up being a huge delay in Amazon prime orders. Seems like a suicide mission to me.
Didn't he state there's an AIS transponder on his boat? Maybe huge boats will be kind and avoid him?
@@laurencevanhelsuwe3052 a 100k+ ton tanker doing 16kts can turn on a dime to avoid this dustbin.
All but the largest ships have to avoid him as he is a sailboat. And other sailors hopefully are polite enough
Insane, I can already feel the cramps. I’d imagine cleaning yourself would be extremely difficult. When the journey is done this boat might be declared biohazard. I’ve always thought a jetski crossing would be adventurous though
Andrew if you read these comments, might be worth taking something akin to a perforated sheet that affixes onto the dome - if you get a problem with the vents or want a breeze to keep cool, you can have ventilation about the place without getting blasted/awash. Make sure to have an alternative locking system for the front of the hatch for when it gets knocked by a wave. I'm sure you've already thought of it. Good luck!

Pad that harness so you don't get raw chafing in rough weather.

I realize it adds quite a few miles... put it would have been nice if he left from the Scripts Institute in Falmouth Massachusetts and ended in Falmouth England.
Robert Manry sailed Tinkerbelle a 13’ converted Old Town day sailor on that route in the 1960s. A Russian sub stopped mid-Atlantic and gave him a bottle of Vodka!
I went in it at the boat show......nice guy strong craft, but he needs to start his food diet much sooner it takes months & months to get your body prepared for this stretching and blood flow is critical. The boat will do it with no problems.

10x by length, but by displacement it's gotta be astounding how small it is comparatively.
33? Sounds like a pretty good size TBH.. I've got a 48' catamaran and it's kind of a pain in the ass because most marinas aren't designed for boats that are 25' wide. You on the otherhand can go pretty much anywhere you want and reasonably expect there to be a space available somewhere for you... Bigger boats have to plan or call ahead.

I sail solo on my 60ft first generation Open 60. It's funny to think we could fit almost 20 Big C's onto my deck! Lovely guy and a thorough, professional approach to what will be quite a challenge in the North Atlantic, even in that time of year. He'll be hit by at least two nasty lows. I wish him the very best of luck. He knows what he's doing.

True....in about 18 days. If he can pull this off it will be a real feat. However, I think its a little off the rails.

Sitting 90+plus days is a very dangerous route due the high risk of thrombosis and in general unhealthy blood flow.
This is definitely not worthy in a "risk to reward" ratio and any common sense.
He did say that he was planning to exercise regularly.

My question is, why not a small foldable solar collector to repower when possible?

So when the Atlantic decides to have one of her morning episodes which pending on her mood can last days- this Englishman joyfully decides to manually strap himself into a fibreglass straight jacket to be jolted around like his seated a top an angry Bull whose just been branded. You're one of the most positive Englishman I've come across.

Hannes Lindemann crossed the Atlantic in a Klepper kayak. You could pick that up and carry it. I'd argue that that was a much smaller boat. Boats are three dimensional.
Off topic, but he did it to test the claims of Alain Bombard that you can do the trip without provisions. 1952 Bombard sailed across the Atlantic in an inflatable without provisions, living of fish and plankton. According to Wikipedia there was a huge debate about fresh water.
Crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a Klepper Kayak, WOW! That is seriously impressive!
Its also immensely courageous, and he was obviously a very confident man to undertake such a dangerous venture.
Can you imagine being on a vessel in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and spotting a guy kayaking!
@@felixcat9318 He was a fit doctor IIRC about 30. Even so he wasn't in great shape after the crossing, although he quickly recovered.
The kayak had an outrigger and a small sail, but even so....
