    I have several and I will tell you from my 25+ years raising all breeds from jungle fowl to Americuena, and I have kept them in coops and free ranged. I prefer free range there nearly zero cost to keep them, aside from Laying pellets and maybe some of a good mixed feed(with various seeds from pumpkin to sterilized cannabis seeds) which could cost at most 30 bucks a month. But, there is virtually zero cost with free range. And eggs galore. My girls lay ALL YEAR ROUND specifically because I allow them to free range. And this can be done if you own land, more then an acre, preferably. As to assure neighbors dogs or cats can't get to them. Another key to keeping happy hens....Keep them beside your house, so they see you everytime you go in or out, it assures safety with them. Chickens are SO much smarter then people give them credit for.

      @wawis231 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      I think most would love to grow food for themselves if they could but the cost is too much...might be "virtually zero" with free range for you maybe bc of your pre existing wealth, whether it is generational or not.

    Put oyster shell powder in their water. They'll lay more eggs. The calcium in the shells helps them make eggs' shells.

    • @ilene79

      It won't make them lay more, it'll just help with the creation of the shells.

      @@ilene79 okay, I heard that it helped.
      So, what helps? What gives them more yellow to lay eggs?

    • @ilene79
      @ilene79 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of protein, they do take from their own bodies to make their eggs, so the more you give them, the less they take from themselves. Protein, the calcium, let them free range as much as possible, getting bugs and stuff. Also they are garbage disposals, you can feed them pretty much everything you eat. Typically they don't eat onion or citrus I've found, but we keep a scrap bag in the freezer, and ALL the leftovers go to them, left over rotisserie chicken carcass? Toss it to them, left over turkey carcass from a holiday meal? Yep, they'll love it. Doesn't matter if it's moldy or past date. They utilize it. Have had chickens for 15 years with no issues.

    • @connorbeck575
      @connorbeck575 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@memefaison6007I had a quick look online and it doesn't really seem like you can speed up their laying much. If they're healthy and have adequate protein and calcium they'll lay eggs and if they don't they'll take a break.
      Laying one almost every day is already a remarkable feat for a chicken since their pre domestic ancestors would be lucky to make 20 a year.

    • @christiethomas6905
      @christiethomas6905 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s my understanding that a hen can produce one egg every 24 hours max, but that’s not the case for every breed or bird. From the amount she’s getting it sounds like all 8 are laying at their max already. Once they begin to age that max goes down so I think if all 8 are at their peak of laying and diet and all else is ideal they can only lay that much. If you want more eggs you’d add more hens. Or add breeds that tend to lay at that daily max. Again, I’m still learning so I could be wrong but that’s what I’m finding.

    wonderful! don't expect them to lay full year in the following years however. the ones we have (vyandotten chicken) laid eggs regularly for maybe 1 1/2 years, now they're in their retirement years, which is like (fingers crossed they stay healthy) 10 years of probably one egg per week or maybe month. I'm sure you know what you do, I've just seen way too many people get chickens during the pandemic to save money and be super disappointed in the performance

    We have 11 chickens, 4 approaching 1 year and the rest approaching 2 years-old. We are getting 7 to 10 eggs a day thru most of the winter months. We are reducing our feed costs by fermenting wheat for three days which also swells the wheat to more than double. In addition we are reducing our layer feed by also sprouting some wheat which grows 4 times the grain we start out with. We are now only feeding about two cups of layer, two cups of fermented grain( which is double to 4 cups) two cups of sprouts (which is 8 cups after sprouting) very healthy and we feed the egg shells back to the birds for the calcium they need to make good shells around their eggs.

Fresh eggs last for about 2 months in the fridge. Now think about that the next time you see the best by date and ask... are they already that old or are they trying to make people buy more often?

      That probably includes bedding since bedding should be changed often. Everything for chickens can be bought in bulk from feed stores and often locally through a co-OP or getting together with a few chicken owners to make larger purchases. $15/week is expensive for only 8 hens. If you wanted to save a lot of money and had a little storage space, you would be looking at around $5 per week to cover bedding, layer feed (providing you don't free range and just save that cost, too) and vitamins for around 10 hens.
      Edited: Many people just sell their extra eggs and then chickens are profitable. You won't make a lot on so few hens but you can easily offset your own costs.

    I have about 120 pecker heads and sell 200 dozen a month up here in canada at $7 CAD per dozen and have a waiting list 4 weeks for grass finished pasture raised eggs

      What on earth are you calling a grass finished egg? That's not even a healthy diet for a chicken, if you just mean lawn grass.
