    It's like most string VST at high velocity, the best description is from an old Sean Connery film called The Hunt For Red October, at slow speeds the Russian silent drive sounds like wales humping, at high speeds it sounds like a robot, it's good until you hit about 90bpm but after that you'll need something with multiple velocity layers with multiple velocity layers contained within each velocity layer. A good free alternative is Unreal Instruments Standard Bass 2 which comes in SFZ format and tuned to B1

    I think physical modelling is the future. Once you're not limited by a sample recording session, you can keep adding "different" instruments so the plugin indefinitely. Also transitions and articulations can be generated more naturally and in infinate combos because it's kinda happening "on demand" rather than needing to exist in the sample pool or rely on sample time-stretching by the instrument engine.
    Same applies for MODO DRUMS. I think IK are on a unique path and it's the way of the future.
    God only knows what will be possible when they combine AI with physical modelling.

    • @CGWS2011
      @CGWS2011 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Physical modelling is coming from the past. Yamaha introduced it with the legendary VL1 and VP1 back in the early 90s, almost 30 years ago.

    • @TerenceKearns
      @TerenceKearns 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CGWS2011 Isn’t that interesting. That is a great point. Yet sample libraries are vastly more popular and will be just because of momentum and simplicity. Today’s centralised cloud computing was yesterday’s mainframe. But with every iteration there is a profound difference. CPU power not being the least of it. Abundance of computer based music producers et al.

    I really like MODO Bass. I find that it's very playable which means that I can lay down a convincing bass track pretty quickly. While it can sound a bit fake/sterile at times it's rarely noticeble in a mix. I think they could work a bit on adding more realism to it with more imperfections, and perhaps also some "intelligent" scripting that will automatically simulate a bass players moves (like Virharmonic Bohemian Violin but for bass).
    One of the main selling points for me was also that it doesn't consume a lot of disk space like sample libraries does.

    I think this plugin in sounds cool, I think the thing to watch for regarding realism is the playing, I notice people play bass plugins with a keyboard bass styles and therefore it sounds like a keyboard bass players don't often play so staccato generally because its harder to do, with programming and using all the features and automating some like say muting I can see realistic bass sounds being created, maybe not live but for recordings anyway.

    I like Modo Bass. I've used it in some of my work. However, I've found
    myself going back to sample-based bass instruments. While it's very
    clean, it's "too" clean. I like the string scrapes of a real bass. The
    release sound on Modo left me with a lot to be desired. Good plugin, but
    not great.

    Hey, this goes to the original poster and anyone in the comments. Been looking for a nice smooth bass sound (like the P Bass I guess) for Fuity Loops. I can see MODO offers the full pack for like 300 Euros which is a bit out of my price range, but I'm tempted by the reduced P Bass 60s and 70s set for I think 40 Euros. From this video they both sound like they'd work well with the music I make, anyone else downloaded the smaller limited pack and found it good value for money?

  • @DihelsonMendonca
    @DihelsonMendonca 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    *Slaps could be made by fingering using a high velocity note or aftertouch, instead of having to change the "preset" with another articulation, necause when playing in real time, we keyboardists often play the bass with the left hand and a piano with the right hand. There´s no time to change articulation on the left so quicky sometimes. It would be fine if we could have at least "ghost notes" by releasing fast keys, and slaps just using high velocity over the keys. It would be a better work. Do you know any VSTi bass plugin which does that ? Thanks.*

      Carlton Melson I've never heard of it. I'll check it out. :)

      Broomstick is very hard to find these days because they stopped making it. When my old PC crashed with the Vista OS I bought a new machine with Windows 7. Broomstick wouldnt work on it so I had to find another bass vst. I tried Trillogy at the time and settled on Hard Core Bass. When I built a new machine with Windows 10 Broomstick worked on it so I went back to it. Tried Shreddage Bass and went back to Broomstick. It dosent do nearly the stuff all the new vst's can do but I love the way it sounds.

    I wonder if with PHYS MOD, they could also do next a PHYS-MOD el-GUITAR UU6& 12 STRINGS....RARE MODELS, NEW AND OLD STRINGS, CUSTOMIZABLE ECT AND WITH INTERACTIVE DYNAMIC NEW FENDER 2 AMPS WITH IT.......BUT, DUNNO IF THEY CAN DO THE SAME WITH el-guitars, .....or not. Sampled guitars are not great, imho.....but, a phys mod rikki 12 or 6 string versus sample bank? organs, el - and acoustic pianos, drumsets and basses all seem to work pretty well, but, the poor guitars in vsts usually lack.
    another point;;; usb C is much faster, it might affect sound quality a lot in DAWS by faster signal transer possible.....but, programmers must know also how to make good sound engines that use RAM ROUTINES right too, otherwise,,,,,,,,stuff like reverb will still suck...probablly...I'M ACTUALLY THINKING OF FINDING AN OLD TAPE 8 TRACK WITH INBUILT PRE-AMP MIXERS TO COMPARE STEREO MIX QUALITY TO THE PC OR MAC DAW'S RESULTS......
    ANYHOW, THE MODO IS COOL.....I GAVE U A THUMBS UP ON THE REVIEW; GOOD POINTS AS USUAL U BRING UP...

    Would it be crazy to use a midi converter (Sonnus B2M or Roland Gk) and use this with your bass guitar as a controller to make it sound like every bass you need?

      Theoretically it’s possible, but it wouldn’t work perfectly. You’d still have to make adjustments for things like string, velocity, and articulation, since those don’t always translate accurately.

    There is a really annoying noise that comes through when a note is played on the keyboard. Vsts are cool but I’ve yet to find one where it sounds natural. It will sound ok when the note is being played itself but it sounds clippy. It might be because all the notes are steady at one volume as opposed to when a person plays. I just picture in my head the sound clip being played and even at the end it’s full volume going directly to the next note with an audio file beginning.

    • @hifimidi
      @hifimidi  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Endtimeguitarist Endtimeguitarist have you used Amplesound basses or Scarbee basses? They are the most natural sounding basses outside of the real thing. The hammer on and legato samples bridge the notes to give that natural feel.

    • @endtimeguitarist
      @endtimeguitarist 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HIFIMIDI I used the scarbee from native instruments. I feel like it missed the pluck or pick feel. Like the volume of the note being hit is like an audio clip of the bass at its max volume from when it was first hit. I’m unsure of the features your mentioning. Some settings sounds like the notes are whacked and than disappear to quick. I wish I could explain better. Do you know of any decent videos that give a run down of the scarbee? I have been hoping for a longtime that it could sound better. Thanks for the reply and hope the day is going great!

    • @hifimidi
      @hifimidi  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope you’re day is going well, too. I don’t know of any videos. Scarbee is pretty old. But i wonder how much of that problem has to do with sample start time. In order to feel snappy for keyboardists, some VI creators will start the sample right at the attack (around 30ms into the sample), rather than at the start of the sample. When the sample is at 0ms, it sounds softer but feels like there is a small delay. I wonder if that’s what you’re talking about.

    its not the best but its very very very close, ive played bass for 20 years and this is one of the only plugins ive seen that has it almost exactly, though, if you play it like you're playing a keyboard it obviously wont sound exactly like the real thing. Using it to play slap lines though is pretty bad, there are a few plugins (cant remember the name right now, shoot me) that are able to do it perfect, iirc one of them is only like 20-40 bucks.

    how does this compare to Ample Sounds ABJ2 or their other bass plug-ins?

    • @OneShortMoment
      @OneShortMoment 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      bassicuk1986 : Ha, I was actually about to ask the same... Well, nearly: Of course we can't really compare Modo Bass with just ONE bass from Ample Sound, because it more or less "contains" - or rather: emulates - so many different basses. But if we ignore that fact for a second, I'd also like to hear Rubens opinion about that... Maybe he can say something about overall playability and realism of Modo vs. all the Ample Basses...

    • @hifimidi
      @hifimidi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Manuel H. I played both plugins back and forth. Amplesound definitely sounds more natural because it's the real thing. They added lots of automatic bass noises which make it sound more realistic, however those sounds usually get cut out during EQing anyway.
      Amplesound Bass is still personally my favorite because it the real thing and it's fun to play, but MODO is a whole different beast with its own features. I'll make up my mind soon. Thanks for watching.

      I played around with the demo version of Modo for a week. I loved it, easy to use and the sounds were excellent. I purchased Ample Sounds Yin Yang bass yesterday and have a demo of their P bass. . From a sound perspective the Ample offerings are as realistic as I have heard. Both of the Vst interfaces are intuitive and easy to work with. Right now Ik is offering Modo for $150 as a cross grade, or $200 for new customers. Ample has a deal of $89 through March for a single Bass VST .

    Modo bass to me just feels so robotic and unrealistic to me
    You have all these features but it feels so synthesized
    To me I feel like shreddage 3 precision tops this way better
    Modo bass is a good starting out bass
    But not one really worth keeping in the long term
    However some good things to note is the verity of basses in here it looks like there was genuinely some effort put into it
    It does so much to speak for itself
    I would recommend stuff like ample bass p
    Or shreddage 3 precision
