Of course, part of this is in the video, I just wanted to put it all together.* *If you want the steps written out, here is a "brief" step by step too:* 1. Measure & cut the layers of tulle & ribbon. ~Label each layer to help you stay organized.~ 2. Iron ribbon in half with the nice side out. ~Trim & burn edges to stop fraying~ 3. Wedge the bottom section of the tulle into the inside fold of ribbon. Sew into place. 4. Gather down layers by hand & sew together, do this for all layers. (this goes in better detail in the video: 2:10 ) a) Fold tulle in half until you find 7 sections in the top layer. Repeat on the mid section. b) Line up the pins on the top & mid sections. c) Find center points of each pin to ensure a more even gather. e) Sew layers down, continuing to gather down by eye. f) Repeat to attach the middle and bottom sections. Making sure the ribbon is on the bottom of the three layers. The other method you can use, uses the same process but the fabric is sewn into loops first. 5. Measure your desired length of underskirt & add one centimeter. Measure your hips and add 5-10 cm. 6. With your measurements, mark & cut a rectangle. Create a rolled hem on one edge. This is the bottom edge. Over lock sides & top to prevent fraying. ~If making the tutu with the elastic, sew the sides together.~ 7. Pin the three layers of the top sections together & sew it. 8. Find the center points of your tulle & lining, and pin together. Proceed to gather down the tulle & lining, so you can sew the layers together. *Fitted Waist Band:* - Take your ribbon (with burned & trimmed edges) & pin it equally around the top edge of your tutu. Sew it down. - Fold Ribbon over, towards the insides, pin down, and sew again. - Sew each layer together, and attach hook & eyes at the waist band. *Elasticated Waist Band:* - Make a loop of your elastic at your desired length. Pin it into place by finding the center points. - Pull the fabric and elastic firm while sewing it together. Sew once at the top and bottom to prevent your elastic from rolling. - Make sure you sew each layer together, so you do not have an open side. (It seems like you can do this before attaching the waist band, probably around when you attach the lining. *How to Make the Petticoat Longer* There’s two ways you can add length to the petticoat; Option 1: Add more sections. - This option is pretty straight forward, I personally would probably continue to keep each added layer at 3x your waist length, unless you want more volume and then you could make it bigger. Option 2: Find tulle that’s wider than 6” - Usually you can find 12” tulle rolls but they may not be long enough. If you need to sew rolls together, just overlap the tulle a bit (1/2-1”) and sew down it with match thread. - You can also use a bolt of tulle and cut it into strips of your desired length. This can be tedious depending on how much fabric you are needing to make your petticoat. - Use a combination of a bolt and 6” or 12” rolls
That's why I love TH-cam. This is such a niche tutorial video but so so helpful, as someone that has hopes to get into making my own cosplays, your channel is such a gift! Thanks for this
Super excited to try this out with light ivory tulle and (possibly) yellow or blue ribbon! I'm a complete beginner when it comes to sewing clothes with machines (as I had only made plush toys and sewed sections onto dresses by hand), but with a little bit of thinking and searching through the comments, I think I'll be able to figure it out! I'm making a Trickster Jane cosplay almost entirely from scratch (save for the wig and shoes, of course).I'm even making the dress and her huge jujupop, and I'm so glad I found this! I'm sure it'll add the perfect amount of trickster floof to her dress!
I wish I had found this before I went and bought a petticoat off amazon for my ruby rose cosplay. That thing was so so soooooo itchy. Hopefully I can find another use for this tho (I made and used the cosplay at least 2 years ago now so it is far too late to be making a new one for it)
You could always amend it by adding a lining if it doesn’t have one. Otherwise, next time- yes please make one and I would love to see the finished product ^_^
THAT GATHERING METHOD IS SO SMART. the gathering is what was absolutely killing me, i'm just not patient enough to go over everything several times! I briefly (very briefly) considered hand gathering, bcs my machine was not doing the job right. what a life saver!
I'm planning on making some for my almost 12 yr old for cos play as well as everyday wear. May even have enough tulle still that I bought for a previous project and didn't use
Praise girl! I've been watching and watching petticoat tutorials but non of them were quite right, then your's comes along and BOOM found my perfect petticoat 💖 Thank you so much for making this xxx
I personally find that hand stitching the gathers makes for a much neater and cleaner look overall. Though it is quite time consuming to say the least. Measuring and evening the gathers with the use of pins was a very clever idea. I will most certainly employ this technique in future projects.
This video has just saved my DIY thanks i was struggling trying to make the petticoat do what i wanted it to do. I was winging it to be honest such a great tutorial new subscriber here

the best petticoat tutorial I have found1 Some make it sound SO complicated but you make it sound like it is not something you need a degree to do :) YAY!
Wanted to thank you again for this tutorial. It took awhile (because working with black tulle was a bit hard on my eyes) but my petticoat is done. Although it's not 100% perfect since it's a bit croaked on the underskirt, I love it because it's exactly what I wanted. I've spent less than $10 making this myself whereas anything remotely close to what I want is $20 or more thanks to shipping and those are either only 2 thin layers, too long, or with absolutely no real poof like I want. On another note, perhaps it was just me or my machine but both my ruffler and shirring foot didn't do too well with the tulle. Though knowing my luck now that I'm done if I were to try again it'll go through without a problem.
After seeing more of Summer Rose’s outfit from RWBY I realized I probably need a petticoat. When I saw more her skirt I was like I’m already not sure how I’m goin to tackle her top let alone a petticoat, but after watching this I have confidence I can make one before Easter.
Rose Siren Cosplays how is it coming along? I’ve finally almost done with the top which has been trial and error with making my own pattern for it. I keep putting off on making the sleeves as I dislike making them.
@@WinterMoonStories Its good, the top is totally killing me, since the sleeves are ballooned or whatever and I do not have fun sewing that. I enjoy the cape since I added little white rose petals at the bottom. if you wanna see the process or anything my insta is @rosesirencos!
Thank you so much! I’m a can can dancer and it’s so hard to find actually perfectly fluffy petticoats that don’t break the bank and now I can make it myself! Many thanks from the socal western can girls!
Just finished using this tutorial to make a petticoat and I feel so adorable wearing it!! It's so puffy and lovely, I feel like a princess. Thank you Kirilee!
I'm hoping to make a petticoat in this fashion for a sort of party in 2 months. I have longer cuts of tulle and luckily I have both a gathering and ruffler foot so I'm trying to figure out which parts of this I need to adjust for having them. I've been looking at a lot of tutorials and yours has been the best so far in terms of explaining the process. One came close but they were unclear in terms of cutting the tulle and have been unable to explain it since they didn't really make the tutorial themselves.
Господи, спасибо большое 💞 Давно хотела такую юбочку, но никак не решалась заказать. А теперь я могу сама её сшить! 1 сентября поеду закупаться материалами)
Hia and thanks! I am using this tutorial for a red petticoat. The character is Ruby from RWBY. I already have spent so much time on the petticoat. This process does take a lot of time, but even with just the first layer, I think it already makes a huge difference. Thank you so much for this tutorial, it has been so helpful to me. I will edit this comment (I hope) after I finish this project. Thanks again!
Hopefully this will make sense. Im going to be making my prom dress and i want to add tulle under the skirt for extra poof. How many layers of tulle did it take to make this from outside to lining?
So just for clarification, at 3:44, I should have three separate 3:11 skirts that I then stack and sew all together along the top-most edge of the top section? And then I sew my underskirt pinned against the innermost skirt?
I am currently doing this with 2 sections rather than 3 (Captain America USO girl, my skirt is VEEEEEEEEEEEERY short) and the ribbon is so time consuming. I applaud you for doing it with even longer strips of tulle.
Omg I’m so glad I found this vid. I was going to buy rem and ram (~cosplay costume~)but it was to much so instead I’m going’s to make it ❤️❤️❤️❤️ thank u so much
Ah so I'm making this petticoat, but could only find a 25 yard tulle. I bought four, but im wondering if it will still work because the bottom layer is supposed to be long and it will be all seperated :(. Could you help?
Ahhhh thank you! With Christmas this week, I’ve got an amazing dress that I want to wear but it had no volume whatsoever! Time for a new sewing project though I do have a couple of half finished ones on my shelf at the moment already XD
Omg so I'm looking at doing this for my Racing Miku Cosplay but I realized if I wanted ribbon, I'd need 150 yards (the only amount of tulle I could fine, rip) and I couldn't find any for less than like 50 dollars for the full amount, but I just found some 1.5-inch ribbon which is 50 yards for about $5 each. I'm so happy I found it!
Hello! Thank you for this tutorial oml TAT I’ve been searching the internet for a DIY Petticoat that I actually like, and yours looks so perfect ahhh! SO MUCH POOF I would like to ask a few questions, for the tulle, did you completely use all 100 yards of it? (As in when you did the longest layers on the bottom, did you do them 18 meters long each, or did you just use the rest of the 100 yards, split it into 3 and forget about exact measurements?). And, how much ribbon did you need to line each layer? Sorry if I’m confusing lmfao, I just want to make sure I get everything right when I make it for my Kanna cosplay! I’ve already bought the tulle off amazon, but I’m not sure how much ribbon I’ll need ;; Thank you!!! I hope you see this 😭💕💕
Anuraxan to be honest- I actually did four of the bottom sections (with the remainder of what was left over divided into four - I said three in the video just to make it easier to follow for the tutorial). The bottom layer, I attached two bottom sections. To figure out the ribbon, it was measuring how much would be in the bottom sections :) I hope that makes sense
Hi, thank you very much for your video. I had absolutely no idea that i can buy the fabric ready to sew on a roll. This will make everything so much more easy. I already see myself sitting on the floor and cut the fabric in stripes.
2:43 is confusing to me, it might be a sewing term which I don't know of because this is one of my first ever sewing projects. Did she just pin them down to have correct placement or were those markers for sewing? Also, would this project be possible sewing by hand even if it take time, or would it be way more worth it to buy a sewing machine?
You have it correct. I used the pins to Mark the placement before I pinned it all together. You can sew it by hand but considering with a machine (and with the ribbon detailing)’it took me 18-19 hours to complete, I wouldn’t recommend it. If you can borrow a sewing machine, that would be the best bet!
Hi I have a question about the lining! So are you supposed to make a rectangle skirt or would a small circle work. I'm confused on how you did that part
So how much tulle did you use for each section for one layer? From what I'm gathering, you used 2 meters for the top sections, 6 meters for the mid section and 18 meters for the middle sections.
Just used this tutorial to create a petticoat for my Elphelt Valentine cosplay and it's genuinely so great 😃. I used glitter tulle though. Now my living room looks like a fairy exploded in it.
Sarah Valentine you can always try a different way of marking equal amount of sections between two layers you line up- such as a felt tip marker. I use pins to do this because they don't leave a mark
@@KirileeCosplay the precut rolls sizes are 2in and every inch up to 13inches. nylon chiffon as well. With your tutorial I plan on making a few for my daughters. you have the best tutorial I have seen. thanks.
omg bless you for mention precut tulle,,, i found 6 in x 25 yd precut tulle for 99 cents hsjshshshsh so that like 4 dollars instead of a 30+ dollar mess i had last time
I’m sorry you feel that way. You may need to watch again or try the tea length petticoat tutorial to have the gathering technique explained another way
It doesn't strike me as a beginner's project, that's for sure. After working on a shirt that had a gathered neckline, this made a lot more sense to me. As much as you may want to head straight for the project that you want to make, it's much better to just make some more basic clothes first. I've found that by working with free "patterns" on TH-cam where there technically is no pattern, but rather me doing measurements, cutting fabric to a specific shape, and then sewing those shapes together to form the clothing in question, I understand some of these more vague "tutorials" a lot better. Don't worry about making mistakes and having to rip out stitches. That's part of the learning process. Always do mock-ups with cheap fabric first (plain linen or muslin are usually pretty cheap) - you'll probably find that you needed do something different in the process and by doing a mock-up, you don't waste fabric that you wanted to be in a final product.
I'm sorry that you don't understand. There are many ways to make a petticoat, and if my way of teaching doesn't suit you, look at other alternatives. Good luck
My granddaughter wants a poodle skirt with a petticoat. The length of her skirt is 23". How many layers would I have to do to make her a full petticoat? She wants it full, so when she twirls, it flies out, lol. Please advise. This is the best tutorial that I have found and believe me, I have watched a lot, trying to figure this out for her birthday. She is turning 8, but loves this era. Thanks!!!!!!!!
Renee' Raulerson that’s gorgeous you are wanting to create such a lovely gift. To be honest, it depends on the width of tulle you use/cut. You might want to draw it out and do the maths. Remember the ratio- 3 times the layer above, and the one at the waist about twice as long
Thank you so much for this tutorial! It's super useful! I'm trying to use the same idea for a full-length petti and am suffering 😭 You must have so much patience!
Thanks for this tutorial! As a beginner designer, it was just what I needed to make my project. I modified it slightly to fit my design better, but the video had tons of great tips! Thanks again!
Oh my I am so in over my head and I haven't even started lol. These are so pretty and so fluffy. My girls would love them. I need two petticoats for my 3 and 5 yr olds Halloween costumes this year but I got so lost here. I may just have to order 4 from etsy and stack 2 each on each kiddo or I could just go with my cheap (and ugly) usual tutu type and tie tulle around an elastic band. Oh what is a mama to do.
*For measuring your material:*

*If you want the steps written out, here is a "brief" step by step too:*
1. Measure & cut the layers of tulle & ribbon. ~Label each layer to help you stay organized.~
2. Iron ribbon in half with the nice side out. ~Trim & burn edges to stop fraying~
3. Wedge the bottom section of the tulle into the inside fold of ribbon. Sew into place.
4. Gather down layers by hand & sew together, do this for all layers. (this goes in better detail in the video: 2:10 )
a) Fold tulle in half until you find 7 sections in the top layer.

6. With your measurements, mark & cut a rectangle. Create a rolled hem on one edge. This is the bottom edge. Over lock sides & top to prevent fraying. ~If making the tutu with the elastic, sew the sides together.~
7. Pin the three layers of the top sections together & sew it.

- Make sure you sew each layer together, so you do not have an open side. (It seems like you can do this before attaching the waist band, probably around when you attach the lining.
*How to Make the Petticoat Longer*
There’s two ways you can add length to the petticoat;
Option 1: Add more sections.
- This option is pretty straight forward, I personally would probably continue to keep each added layer at 3x your waist length, unless you want more volume and then you could make it bigger.
Option 2: Find tulle that’s wider than 6”
- Usually you can find 12” tulle rolls but they may not be long enough.
UNDERRATED COMMENT THANK YOU
Wait...wouldn’t the top section be the length of the waist or am I misunderstanding?
You're the real MVP!
ChaosChao the “top section” they are referring to is the top section of tulle which you want to be fluffier than just your waist measurement.

*I'm so glad I found this comment*
@katiarepublic7057 Same i was actually losing my mind 😂. I was like huh but one doesn't look that fluffy- wait huh?????
I’ve been so mad trying to find a petticoat for me so thank you so much I can’t wait to try and make it
Good luck! I’m sure you’ll make it look amazing!

@@Eef986 wait but im cosplaying them and i bought a petticoat on amazon :0
@@Eef986 oml im doing a danganronpa cosplay too im doing komaru naegi
I am currently doing this with 2 sections rather than 3 (Captain America USO girl, my skirt is VEEEEEEEEEEEERY short) and the ribbon is so time consuming. I applaud you for doing it with even longer strips of tulle.
Thank you and yes, yes it is. But hey, it’s pretty in the end :)
Omg I’m so glad I found this vid. I was going to buy rem and ram (~cosplay costume~)but it was to much so instead I’m going’s to make it ❤️❤️❤️❤️ thank u so much
RaYhYuNg Texts awesome! Good luck with it!
Oh I am for sure using this tutorial for my Junko cosplay for San Japan this year!! Thank you!!!
Good luck! I've just started making my petticoat now for casual wear; I just started laying out fabric for the third tier and my arms *hurt.* 😅
Awesome
Thank you!! I needed this to improve my Celeste and Kawaii~Chan cosplays!! ❤️
Awesome! Good luck!
This is the best video for a tulle petticoat. Thank you!!!
Thank you
Ah so I'm making this petticoat, but could only find a 25 yard tulle. I bought four, but im wondering if it will still work because the bottom layer is supposed to be long and it will be all seperated :(. Could you help?
No problem- just sew the lengths together!
@@KirileeCosplay Oh, alright! Thank you!
Ahhhh thank you! With Christmas this week, I’ve got an amazing dress that I want to wear but it had no volume whatsoever! Time for a new sewing project though I do have a couple of half finished ones on my shelf at the moment already XD
Hahaha! Go forth and create!
Tbh I just watched this bc I want to learn how to make one for no reason lmao
Who needs a reason? :)
Now that is a big WIN! Nicely done!
im making a twist on aries from fairy tail and this will help her dress!! thank you so much!
That is amazing! Fairy tail is so great ^_^ I cant wait to see what you create!
Amazing craftsmanship & such beautiful execution 🥰💯 Thanks for sharing 🙏
Thank you so much :)
I plan on trying to make this today, thanks for this AMAZING Tutorial
My pleasure and good luck!
MAN i wish this was here when i was making my madoka cosplay xD this is like the perfect shape for madoka's magical girl skirt!
Sometimes we find things after the fact - oh well, next time you do a magical girl :)
Hello! Thank you for this tutorial oml TAT I’ve been searching the internet for a DIY Petticoat that I actually like, and yours looks so perfect ahhh! SO MUCH POOF
I would like to ask a few questions, for the tulle, did you completely use all 100 yards of it? (As in when you did the longest layers on the bottom, did you do them 18 meters long each, or did you just use the rest of the 100 yards, split it into 3 and forget about exact measurements?). And, how much ribbon did you need to line each layer?
Sorry if I’m confusing lmfao, I just want to make sure I get everything right when I make it for my Kanna cosplay! I’ve already bought the tulle off amazon, but I’m not sure how much ribbon I’ll need ;;
Thank you!!! I hope you see this 😭💕💕
Anuraxan to be honest- I actually did four of the bottom sections (with the remainder of what was left over divided into four - I said three in the video just to make it easier to follow for the tutorial). The bottom layer, I attached two bottom sections.
To figure out the ribbon, it was measuring how much would be in the bottom sections :)
I hope that makes sense
Kirilee Cosplay Oh no it does, I just wanted to make 100% sure lmfao 😂💦
Thank you for the reply 💕
Hi, thank you very much for your video. I had absolutely no idea that i can buy the fabric ready to sew on a roll. This will make everything so much more easy. I already see myself sitting on the floor and cut the fabric in stripes.
I'm glad that I could help! :)
This’ll be perfect for my Cyan cosplay! Question, is the underskirt mandatory if I don’t have time or money for the extra fabric?
The underskirt will keep it from being itchy. Lining fabric doesn't cost that much at all, you can probably get the amount you need for around $10.
What Carina said :) - sorry for the delayed response
I’m so gonna try this for my bday dress. I love the poof!!
It is good fun!
YOURE SO INFORMATIVE I LOVE THIS
Good luck!
Hi I have a question about the lining! So are you supposed to make a rectangle skirt or would a small circle work. I'm confused on how you did that part
A small rectangle works fine :)
omg thank u so much ur explanation makes it so much easier!
I’m glad that I could help!
So how much tulle did you use for each section for one layer? From what I'm gathering, you used 2 meters for the top sections, 6 meters for the mid section and 18 meters for the middle sections.
Yep
That is adorable I may never made a petticoat before pput you made it sound so easy and looks so simple I think I'm going to to try it bravo
You can do it! It's certainly just a lot of steps repeating itself
Yaya now i can cosplay mikan from danganronpa thx so mutch!

Just used this tutorial to create a petticoat for my Elphelt Valentine cosplay and it's genuinely so great 😃. I used glitter tulle though. Now my living room looks like a fairy exploded in it.
I LOVE IT
Wow this is gonna help me soooo much in making my petticoat!!! Thanks!!!!!
How awesome! Good luck with your project!
Kirilee Cosplay Thanks!!!!
Do you have any recommendations regarding measurements for the top section since the rest is based on the top section?
Momo Wen I used 2 meters for the top section :)
Loved this! Your instructions are easy to follow, thank you!
eakoandcompany thanks so much for your kind words ^_^
Hi! In was wondering how you matched up the top, middle, and bottom sections for sewing. The pinning method is a little confusing for me
Sarah Valentine you can always try a different way of marking equal amount of sections between two layers you line up- such as a felt tip marker.
I use pins to do this because they don't leave a mark
Kirilee Cosplay ooohhh, so it's not that you're pinning them together necessarily, just marking it?
Sarah Valentine once they are marked out, pining the two pieces together helps to get and even amount of rather right way around
Thank you for this tutorial, I can't wait to try it out one day ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My pleasure! Good luck!

I’m sorry you feel that way. You may need to watch again or try the tea length petticoat tutorial to have the gathering technique explained another way
I love the fluff!!
Lord_OF _Fandoms thank you! ^_^
I dont understand this
Cat _af yes it was very confusing. I did not learn how to make a petticoat from this tutorial.
Thanks God I'm not alone on this
Same
It doesn't strike me as a beginner's project, that's for sure.
Good luck

cheaper to get from china when you consider time factor of money and all lol. But good video
Alex Garcia it also depends on what shape you want to create. :)
BEST TUTORIAL EVER
Thank you so much! :)
Remember the ratio- 3 times the layer above, and the one at the waist about twice as long
Omg thanks! I needed this for maaany cosplays
Glad I could help :)
I love this video; Very informative and the intro made me smile :)

And that works too. I have another tutorial about how to stack and sew premade petticoats together. That might be better for you
@@KirileeCosplay oh that sounds great. I will look it up thanks.
