What cerebral failure said. True. R Lee Ermey was originally a military consultant. The actors werent taking the original drill instructor seriously enough. Ermey convinced Kubrick to let him "motivate" them. One morning the actors arrived on set, saw Ermey in his uniform, and immediately found themselves in deep shit. Alot of R Lee Ermey's lines were improv'd. He relied on his real life experience as a Marine Corps drill instructor. When he passed away in 2018 he was given a military funeral with full colors including a 21 gun salute. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

The door gunner in the movie was actually supposed to be the Gunnery Sgt for the movie. Years ago he had a website up that explained why he didn't have that role. He was actually injured, as he broke some ribs and could no longer play the part. R. Lee Ermy was a military consultant and had been working with him previously to get him prepared for the role. Once he got hurt, Kubrick slid R. Lee Ermy right into the role, and he was a perfect fit.

( not to be 'that guy' - just wanted to mention this, as the comments start to really pour in ) -- The U.S.M.C. utilizes the title Drill Instructor
Also, they are not privates, they have no rank, they are referred to as 'recruits' - in the field, they are not termed 'soldiers' either, they are Marines. In addition, they are not allowed to speak of themselves, in the first person, certainly around ANYone of rank. Just a few nuances, that separate the branches of military, *I thank ALL, past & present, for their dedication & service to our great country !*

How they were referred to depended SOLELY on the Battalion that they belonged to. In first and second Battalion, you were referred to as 'privates' and at third Battalion, you were referred EXCLUSIVELY as 'recruits'. At least that was how it was on Parris Island, S.C. in April of 1987.

When I went through Marine Corps boot camp at Parris Island in the early 80’s, our drill instructors did not accompany us to the rifle range for rifle training. My guess is to avoid being potentially shot by a disgruntled recruit looking for some pay back.

appreciate that and yeah I do listen to my family. And if you’re referring to yourself then, I asked you several times in the comments what song from O girl you wanted. You never replied, but I always see you commenting. I appreciate the time you did spend here with me. Peace and blessings!
