    When I saw you were wearing the Hoka bucket hat 😮…I knew who was going to win this review. But then I saw the Nike singlet and I knew who was going to win the review. Good review, liked the comparison.

    The biggest difference is that the Hokas seemed to have a sweet spot on the forefoot, as if they're specifically 'tuned' to strike in a certain spot. The foam feels bouncier than the Vaporflys, maybe a little firmer, giving the impression of running taller. The Nikes are light, fast, comfortable but don't feel really remarkable in terms of responsiveness. The Hokas really feel more responsive than the Nikes. In fact, I think the Adidas Takumi Sen 8 feel more responsive than these Nikes. Also, due to the slightly wider footprint and more foam on the lateral side, the Hokas get the nod as being a bit more protective and stable than the Nikes. I will be using them primarily on the track for short distances and 400m training. I like the snug fit of the Hoka upper, similar to my Adidas racing spikes.

    I love how you’re wearing a Nike shirt and Hoka hat, to show that you’re biased towards both brands.

    Over any longer distance, my very old feet do better with a not so stiff plate. Clearly the X2 is the upgrade from Endorphin Speed 3. Just waiting Hoka to a nice colorway.

    • @JoelLong
      @JoelLong  ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely understand Steve. The Vaporfly 3 definitely has a very very stiff plate compared to the X2. I do believe the X2 is more comfortable for sure. I just hit 50 miles on my X2 and they are getting better the more I do speed runs in them.

    If I run around a 8:50-9:00 marathon pace, in your opinion are these two models not helpful or does it have a negative effect when you're running that "slow"? Thank you for the excellent thorough review!!

    • @JoelLong
      @JoelLong  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment Chelsea, I really the kind words. Honestly, both shoes will certainly help/assist you…
      The Nikes are significantly more aggressive shoes and I’ve noticed that the slowly I ran in them the more uncomfortable it got. The Rocket Xs however felt good even when I ran slower. So the Rocket X 2 didn’t have a negative effect IMO.

      The drop of the shoe is the main reason why super shoes would work against a slower runner.

  • @gbilya2

    Can someone PLEASE address how Hoka is the only super shoe that fits us wide footed runners! Alphafly and vaporfly give me blisters within 3 miles even with one size up! I mean the skinny portion behind the toe box where your arch starts!

    • @JoelLong
      @JoelLong  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment George! You raise an excellent point regarding the very narrow sections on the Alphafly & Vaporfly. I was pleased to see the Vaporfly 3 has a wider toe box than previous iterations…nevertheless it still is narrow and not geared to the wide footed runners. Thank you for this insight.

      Maan spending almost 300 bucks on a shoe that gave you blisters must have hurt.

    Can someone help me with a suggestion? I'm relatively new to running (less than 1 year of experience in proper running)
    I'm aiming to run my first full in Nov this year in NYC
    Currently I run 13 miles (21 km) every Sat
    I want to change my shoes coz they're old and I'm looking at Vaporfly 3 or rocket x2 (Currently, I have pegasus 37)
    Last week I tried under armor hovr machina 3 with bluetooth sensors. I liked the sensors and the insights that they provide, but it turned out that they had such heavy cushioning around the heel that they were forcing me to land on my heel instead of midfoot landing, something that I've been practicing with my current shoes
    I want to buy a new pair of shoes that will help me land midfoot. What shoe would you recommend? also, am I missing on something?
    Looking forward to all your inputs. Thank you for the video, Joel!

    • @JoelLong
      @JoelLong  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for reaching out.
      First, I would be interested to know your weekly mileage.
      Second, do you run in 1 pair of Pegasus 37s? Or do you have multiple pairs?
      Third, how many miles do you have on your shoes?
      So if you are looking for shoes to help you land more of the forefoot/midfoot area I would encourage you to look into shoes that have the “rolling technology” A example of this would be Hoka- Early stage meta rocker of
      Saucony- speed roll technology. It helps and assists you in more of a midfoot/forefoot strike. Giving you more of a propulsive feel.
      Next, It should be noted that there is a massive difference between “race day shoes” or carbon fiber plated shoes, and “daily trainers” or shoes that you would wear on 80-90% most runs.
      For this, I have a couple favorites.
      1. Hoka Mach 4, Mach 5
      2. Hoka Clifton 9
      3. Saucony Ride 16
      4. Asics Gel-Cumulus 25
      I hope this is helpful.

      Wow, thank you for the detailed response.
      weekly mileage: just 1 long zone 2 run as of now. Planning on joining 4.5 months training, starting June onwards
      Pegasus: I just have one pair of Pegasus 37
      Miles: I have been using it for close to an year now, starting from 2-2.5 miles to the current 13 miles. So I roughly have about 400 - 450 ish miles on the current shoes
      How do I differentiate between race day shoes vs daily trainers? I understand the intent, but how do I technically differentiate them?
      Also, smaller heel to toe ratio helps in midfoot landing right? is there any other factor that helps us do that? less weight? how much cushioning?
      Apologies if I'm asking a lot of stupid questions. Thank you again for the help!!

    Nike is about an ounce lighter than the Hoka at any size.

    Is this type of supershoe even recommended for an slow runner in his early 40s? Finished my first marathon under 4h two weeks ago, plan to knock off 15 minutes on my next one. Supershoes would be overkill, stick to your daily trainers? 🤷‍♂

    • @JoelLong
      @JoelLong  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for reaching out Noam. That is a tricky question. I have seen all types of runners where this Supershoe. From fast runners to slower runners. Regardless of how fast or slow one may be, the shoe is so light and responsive that I believe that it will help your running efficiency on race day. I have done slower runs in these and they just make you want to run faster. I did notice that there is a particular pace for me that I could feel the plate start working. I hope that is helpful.
