  • We all struggle with getting older, Bo Burnham does his best to cope with turning 30. I am currently 30 (circa 2021) and feel very similar to what Bo is portraying in this song.
Age is a weird thing, how did you feel about turning 30? If you're not 30 yet, how do you feel knowing that it's on its way?

Trust me, not all people without kids are still living in their youth. My husband and I are 30 with no kids and we lay down for bed at 11pm for one episode of Forensic Files then sleep. We don't drink or smoke or anything like that. We just slowly morphed into old people even without kids 😅

Haha I love that, actually! Maybe it's just my friends who still live in their youth. They were the party animals in College and can't seem to let that lifestyle go.
I have always been a homebody so the night you just described sounds fantastic to me!

I’m older then you and Bo, I’m not having kids and never planned to AND I’m still a grown up.
I think the problem here is the out of context-ness of the song floating alone.
Yes, some people stay in a state of arrested development but some of those folks also have kids.
I have always had kids in my life, I got kids coming out my ears. I have a house full of toys because of how often kids are in my life.
    My dog prefers them.
    I’m still not having one.
The thing is Parents are sensitive about people who shit talk parenting or kids in general AND people without kids are sensitive to the constant question of when will you “grow up” and follow the exact path I have? The only legitimate path.
Bo is halfway through a one man show filmed by himself in a room during quarantine. He is speaking clearly between songs about his mental health and this song is sort of a midpoint of this masterpiece. He has given us front row seats to his depression and panic.
He doesn’t think kids are stupid.

I enjoyed your interpretation of this, thank you. It's weird seeing it out of context; prior to this song when he's sitting on the stool he's talking about how he wanted to finish the special before his 30th birthday and then tells you he's turning 30 at midnight, it sets a whole mood that the song completely contrasts with it's tempo. Afterwards he does a fake psa about not killing himself or yourself, I say fake because of the tone/acting (and the visual element). You'll see eventually when you watch the entire thing. Also glad you noticed his light in his hand. He uses light wonderfully and Inside is the pinnacle of that work so far. Unrelated, but if you haven't already been warned his older work can be a bit cringy (which he somewhat addresses in Inside) but it's seriously all so good, especially when considering the context of his age, home life (white kid living in the suburbs with a family that supported his whims, epitome of privilege), and the fact he was literally a prodigy and knew it. He's a wizard. And I love him. (but he doesn't like when people say they love him because he knows you don't *really* know him.)
The first song I heard/saw from him was Words, Words, Words and it blew my mind. For so many reasons, not all of them good lol.

I really enjoyed what he was doing with that flashlight. From waving it around his head to the way he snuffed it on his back and flashed it on each snare kick during the verses, it's small details like that that I enjoy searching for and finding.
Thanks for the context of what came before the song in the special, I am excited to watch it in it's entirety and see how everything is connected and flows together.

    Subscribed! Three random comments:
    (1) Everyone is encouraging you to go down the Bo Burnham rabbit hole, and you should! *BUT.* I've seen numerous people who get introduced to Bo through "Inside", love it, then go watch his early stuff from ~2007 ... and visibly try not to wince. Just think, "feral teenager let loose on the internet", and you'll be able to guess the type of jokes you're in for.
Basically, Bo blew up in fame right at the pinnacle of "offensive humor in light of itself" as a genre of comedy. (This was before trolls learned to exploit the concept as a means of openly insulting people, thereby ruining the genre for everybody.) Still hilarious, but _wildly_ NSFW!
    (2) Likewise, everyone is encouraging you to watch all of "Inside" in order, and again, you should! But for me, the most impressive thing is to watch his transition from "musical comedian" to "performance artist who occasionally uses music or comedy to make his point". You can pretty much watch that transition occur in the last half of "Make Happy", his third special and last on-stage performance.
    (3) "Alexa, play 'Older' by They Might Be Giants."

I seriously don't mean simply on principle/out of spite that one can only appreciate stuff if one knows the history, if one has read the books, and the like, but here it definitely can add an additional layer of... awe, appreciation if one goes through Bo Burnham's and pop culture's and the internet's development over the years in mostly chronological order.

I feel a couple should be squeezed in if you are trying to show his progression “ art is dead” “ we think we know you” and left brain/right brain “ THEN you can watch can’t handle this and are you happy. The *PAUSE* to realize he quit performing after that and then watch Inside. Then sit back like the rest of us for a few minutes maybe longer just staring at the screen after the video ends feeling just SO MUCH.

It's pretty impressive that he filmed this song, with all the lighting changes, in one long take. My personal opinion about why he's in his underwear in this particular song is because it's the closest thing Netflix would let him get to being in his "birthday suit" ...well...almost...but no spoilers!
I also love how he uses the handheld light during the "turning 30" part to show that he's completed one more revolution around the sun. And also how he uses the 3 floor lights to give himself backup dancers/singers! 😄 He's just a genius.
I think I chuckle the most at the "build a birdhouse with my mom" line...and then I remember that Bo also wrote and directed a critically acclaimed film when he was 27...which just puts my 31years in even harsher perspective! 😂

Existential doubts, panic attacks, extreme suicidal thoughts, severe depression etc. and have for a long time. But it's sort of a main theme of the entire special. I was in the middle of a particularly bad and dark week when it came out and it just made it hit that much harder. Dope! My take on this particular song is that it belongs more in the context of the whole special (still grateful for the reaction). I'm probably reaching, but after some deep dives in Bo's older interviews, I think Bo might also be throwing a lil' shade here on comics who often moan about their underachieving lives and other people's kids for easy laughs. But it mainly seems to highlight how pathetic celebrating anything during lockdown was. My feelings on age? ehh, Well I'm on here addicted to Bo & HMack reactions.... sooo let's just say this feels like a cheaper therapy alternative, in order to save more for someone else's college fund. That's an interesting take that you have in regard to Bo theory throwing shade at other comedians. I feel like I am missing a lot of useful context by not really knowing Bo's history. Not sure if I agree with the take that celebrating anything during the pandemic is pathetic. Not saying that that isn't a possible message he's trying to portray but rather I feel like people needed ANYTHING to celebrate over the pandemic, twas a rough few years to humanity and our collective mental well-being.

@@Hey_Jamie Heyo! Always happy to see you around. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts on it. I probably oversimplified my take poorly. Wasn't a large premise of "Inside" the fact that Bo (or his character) is working on a comedy special during the pandemic and the challenges he (or his character) are struggling through to complete it? I totally agree it gets existential (usually in an theatrical, arguably sarcastic, way), but I guess I found this song especially relatable from having celebrated alone during the pandemic. It’s weird how literal people take content like this. I see him saying stupid friends having stupid children because people who have kids these days talk about it non stop. It’s the only thing you care about talking about because it consumes your whole life. We who have kids may feel left out, but we trivialize our people who don’t also have kids.
I have 3 kids and laugh my butt off when I listen to this song. I blast it after a hard morning when I drop the kids off at school on my way to work. It’s really helps me laugh at my life. A hard morning just to drop my little people off so I can start my day. It helps me remember where I started I guess.
Saying you’re gonna kill yourself because of something can just mean fuck me. It’s not always literal…

Love the video. My interpretation of "my stupid friends are having stupid children" is based on the repetition he uses. At first I laughed because it sounds like he just thinks having kids is stupid, but then he keeps repeating it and makes it sound like he's personally hurt by his friends having children ("stupid f*cking boring ugly children"). I'm not sure how much of Bo's stuff you've watched, but he references having a daughter a lot and I think it's somewhat genuine. So to me, it starts as "having kids and settling down is stupid" and then the more he repeats it, the more it turns into "actually, having kids and settling down sounds nice but I'm not there yet and I feel somewhat taunted by friends starting families so...(stupid f*cking boring ugly children)". Maybe I'm putting more of my own feelings into the song than what's there though...😅 but that's what I got from it. So many possible interpretations!

Would also like to suggest a band for you to possibly react to, Nothing But Thieves. They're a British band whose music really dips into so many genres and styles that it's hard to get an idea of their music from just one song.
For a first impression of them I'd suggest their song Impossible. The official music video is really cool and it'd be great to see you react to that as well, but I'd actually recommend the Live At Abbey Road orchestral version first, it's pretty universally agreed upon by fans to be the best live version of that song.

I'm a bit late, but I figured I'd give my input on the feelings of aging.
I turn 25 next month. Age is usually just a number to me at this point and I sometimes forget how old I am. I am young and I feel young, but sometimes I look at my age and the general expectations of society and get anxious about what I haven't accomplished. In the US, it's usually expected that you go to college right out of high-school and earn a bachelor's degree by 22-24. There's a lot of pressure to figure out what career you're doing right away and I think that's because a lot of people 20-30 are afraid of wasting their entire lives. I'm glad that many colleges are trying to combat this attitude. I think the fear of wasting your life is what's hitting bo in this.
But when I really think about it, I'm happy to grow older because that means I have more happy memories and experiences to look back on and look forward too. I've done a lot of personal mental health work in this time that other's earned degrees. Utimately, I'm old enough to take control of my life, even if it's only in small ways sometimes, and as long as I'm working to better myself and live life to the fullest, I'm not wasting it.

I'm another 1990, turned 30 in lockdown, but I didn't get as emotionally devastated by the pandemic as others because I had already become disabled to the point of being housebound (if not bedbound half the time) at 27. By the time the pandemic hit and I turned 30 my expectations were so low I really didn't mind not doing anything. Kinda surprised I'm still alive, taking it one day at a time.

I don't drink, I work a morning shift so I can't really stay up too late, I don't think I'll ever have enough time for all the TV shows and movies and games that keep coming out. Honestly my life's kinda boring so I'm trying to figure out what I want to do outside of work and that gets surprisingly difficult to do when all your physical and mental energy's spent by the time you get off work.

In my experience almost all millennials fall into one of 2 categories - the ones who went to college, moved around to different cities and are career oriented while also having fun partying and traveling to exotic locations, and the ones who didn't leave their hometowns, got married and had kids in their early 20s and look down on the former. Call me a cynic but anyone who has kids before the age of 25 is pretty stupid. No offense to you or anyone who chooses to do so, but you're missing out on so much by taking that route. You can't fully enjoy your 20s when you have a kid to look after.

I couldn't just abandon my kid, although I'll be honest the thought crossed my mind as I went through the range of emotions finding out I was going to be a dad. So I had no choice but to figure out my life quickly and do what I had to do to provide.

I believe that’s PART of the point, but what I took from the song is something everyone can,
or will be able to relate to,
Ageing, no longer being a young person full of potential.
I think Bo was/is still going through a sort of identity crisis, he’s no longer one of the youngest comedians in the room,
and I think reaching the end of his twenties really pushed that fact down hard on him
Your teenage years and your twenties are often considered to be “the prime of your life” you’re young, dumb and learning,
whereas 30 and beyond is when society expects you to get your shit together and sort your life out, to become a productive member of society in some way,
and I think maybe Bo feels as Though he hasn’t achieved that yet, the line that made me think this was
The line where he said “When he was 27 my granddad fought in Vietnam, when I was 27 I built a birdhouse with my mum.”
And obviously it also has to do with the fact that he’s stuck inside, making he’s 30th birthday even harder, whereas if it wasn’t for covid, he may have been able to subdue some of the dread with celebrating with loved ones and partying.
      But that’s just my theory

The actual Netflix version is absolutely 1000% better. This multiplication stuff to get around copyright really just loses the entire visual aspect of the video.
