These engines were the sound track to my life from 1980 to 85 on Nimrods and Buccaneers. I especially liked doing long lead on ground runs at 03.00, waking everyone up! Usually it was to test DPRV’s and other items after replacement. Something special about standing under a RR Spey running about 80% while sticking your arm up the side of it feeling for valve air leaks in the dark….😁
To be honest I would too. There are some cool things you can do now... Shoot guns, drive tanks, drive supercars but NOBODY has given the option to mess around jet engines.
That area of grass and the trees behind the engine reminds me of the area of vegetation behind the Harrier engine running pens at BAe Dunsfold. There was an area about 100 yards long where there was no vegetation at all on the ground, and at the end of that 100 yards all the trees were dead. We would put a Harrier in the pen and chain it down over the blast pit and deflectors that directed the jet blast out of the rear of the pen when the jet nozzles were pointed down. It was quite spectacular watching from the sound proof room on the side of the pen when whoever (normally a Rolls Royce engineer) was running an engine got it up to 100% with the nozzles aft. But with the nozzles pointed down the aircraft became a struggling monster trying to escape and leap out of the pen. We couldn’t be anywhere close to the aircraft at 100%, the air buffet was so fierce you couldn’t breath plus the risk of ingestion down the air intakes.
What a treat to watch! I spent many years as an aircraft engineer on the BAC 1-11 series, all powered by Spey variants. Brought back happy memories of engine idle runs 😊
First plane I ever flew on was a British Island Airways BAC 1-11. Those engines are LOUD - even with the hush kit. I swear it's what they used for Gerry Anderson's Thunderbirds. ;)

You guys are so lucky in having all that space! I have to run my Viper in a thirty foot back garden and use a 45 degree elbow on the tail in order to divert the exhaust from frazzling the lawn and demolishing the fence!
What can I say. In 1987 I started work as a test instruction author. (Test schedule writer) I had missed the Spey as the last repair and new had finished testing at Victory road. I think it was 33 to 31 beds. However I did get the chance to be with one of these in its Phantom re-heat form in the test cell at max clatter, using over half a gallon of Jet A ever second on max re-heat. Don't run one of those there boys or your trees will be on fire. On re-heat in a test bed it sounds like the world is being ripped apart. My hears are still ringing to this day. I was a young man and the guys I worked with were diamonds.

As a corporate pilot/ A and P I flew two aircraft with these engines. The Gulfstream II and the BAC 1-11. Loved both those aircraft, loved this videos as well. Now the planes as well as myself are all retired. Not too sure I’d want to be your next door neighbor. LOL !!! Great video.
My first job was measuring kerosene flow rate / pressure drop in sections of the reheat pipework so that the mechanical analogue CASC (Combined Acceleration Speed Control) and Cat Timer would open the main fuel taps as soon as possible after the pilot had banged the 'throttle' open to escape the most immediate threat, without stalling the compressor or douching the hot catalytic reheat igniter. RR put perfume in the fuel because the neighbours had complained about the smell.
One thing is for sure, the trees and grass behind your test skid has been sterilized of all life. No infestation there. Thanks for the run-up. Nimrod's were retired in 2011. Should be a bunch of those Spey around.
Thank you so much for this video. As you might be able to discern from my channel's logo, I am a jet engine geek. To me, there is nothing sweeter than the sound of a jet engine spooling up and going to full power. My favorite is the GE90-115B, followed closely by the RR RB211. After a long day of teaching, I sit and relax watching aviation videos, headphones on, and the volume cranked. If the sound of a GE90-115B cold start is music to my ears, then the sound of this magnificent engine spooling from 1/3 power to full take off power is an orchestra! In conclusion, I never thought I would see anyone who owns his own jet aircraft engine. Sir, I humbly tip my hat in your direction. Thanks again.
fantastic, when I was a young lad I used to live not to far from RR testing facility at Ansty, I used to loiter around the perimeter and listen to the engines being tested there, an amazing sound. Great video.

I grew up out in the middle of nowhere Texas. I remember growing up and, from time to time, hearing loud, distant noises. All kinds of noises, way off somewhere I couldn't see. I can see myself hearing this engine off in the distance, listening to it for a minute, thinking "that's new", and then going back to whatever I was doing. Lol

I remember doing engine ground runs on the F28 (many years ago now) - it wasn't uncommon to burn 2 tons (or more) of Fuel on a ground running exercise Next time, try find an F28 intake cowl, and exhaust pipe , and you'll be able to blow even more trees over.
The Spey was always a little on the smokey side. Working at Gulfstream for 42 years from 1973 to 2015 I've watched hundreds of GII and GIII take off leaving that tell tale smoke trail. A bit on the loud side too, LOL. I have flown on every model built including the G650. Getting push back in the seat was always a thrill.
Hi guys ex RAF aircraft engineer here, during the cold war era. LOVED the Nimrods and the Buccs with this sound. My fave was the Lightings with the Avon but never seen ANYONE with an engine! There are 2 airworthy jets at Brunty that have good engines though! Not a criticism only a suggestion as you have a lot of 'STUFF' lying around the engine. Id hate to see it wrecked by an ingestion of 'something'. Please make yourselves a ground run cone out of srong mesh to cover the intake. Ive seen these INHALE large objects and FOD from yards AWAY trashing an engine😧. GREAT VIDEO!☝👏👏👏👏

I flew the FK-28 4000 outfitted with the Spey and the -1000, powered by the Tay. (Both named after rivers in England) My first Captain’s upgrade. Always enjoyed taxiing to the gates and watching folks try to plug their ears! My next RR was the RB-211 on the B-757, but it was much too civilized. Enjoyed the vid.
I want to put in a jet engine test stand in my backyard. A Trent 900 would be so cool on a stand. Wide Open Throttle would be so badass. Would just destroy everything in sight.
A house I rented years ago had a Rolls Royce jet engine in the front yard. It was mounted in a steel frame. It was a scrap test engine from shorts aviation factory in Belfast Northern Ireland.
Spent eight years sitting at the front of a couple of those babies. Not once did they ever even in the slightest let us down. Money to Noise generator I LOVE it,
This engine did not have that howling winding noise at start up like in the BAC1-11. This is the planes used by Philippine Airlines in the 70’s and 80’s. I remember as a kid and a teen when the Spey starts up it has a sweet sounding low bass howling sound.
My second time in an airplane was a Mohawk Airlines BAC 1-11 when I was 10 from Detroit MI to Albany NY in the late 60s. First time was a Convair 580 from Saginaw MI to Detroit to catch the 1-11. I was already an airplane nut and this was heaven!
For your safety, do not stand lateral of turbines and compressors. Typically there is a red line on the fuselage drawn to indicate where you shouldn't be in case of a blade exiting. It would also be advised to put a screen in front of the intake. Love this material as an ex-jet engine technician.
Usually that red line on the fuse and engine cowling is where you don't cross whilst the engine is running as you run the high risk of being injested. Uncontained blade failures are thankfully rare.
And this man has 1 in his back yard !! I won't to be this man when I grow up that's the best shit I've ever seen I love jets I just don't have the money to afford 1 the 1s for rc planes are 10 grand or more much less a real 1 I would love to have u as my nabors!!
fantastic...i have a small one 8" dia x 18" long its complete exept for combustion chamber the anular type 8 burners walking stick vaporisers.. max revs 48000 rpm rough guess at thrust 180 kgs more or less cant weld so dont want to louse it up ... my dream is to see it running and making noise have a pair of ceramic bearings for front and rear ... help me ... laurence
I guess my squadron's jet didn't get close enough. US Navy A-7E Corsairs powered by TF41-A-2B, but still a Spey variant (even though the cold sec. was made by Allison).

Funny how they can be noisy all year round but as soon as you play them (Or better them) at their own game suddenly they have a problem with it. I had one asshole like that. He kept playing his music loud and I asked him to turn it down a bit so he turned it up louder. Well, I didn't take that too well so I turned mine up. Keep in mind that he had a micro system that was 100 Watts max, I had a full blown 12 piece stack system rated at 1200 Watts max. He didn't know what I had. Let's just say that you could hear it half way up my street. He shat his pants when I cranked it up, it shook both our houses. He never did it again. I just folded my arms, leant against my wall of my door and looked at him with a satisfying grin. He never spoke to me again. It was perfect!

On the 1-11 the engine started using a Constant Speed Drive Starter. If I remember correctly it was fitted on the lower right fwd face of the gearbox. Can't see it here.

This Engine was used on the Gulfstream GII and GIII jets with the Hush kits. The engine uses Mobiljet oil. 1 quart is 55$
Also Blackburn buccaneer, HS Trident, and BAC 111.

what a beautiful engine, Rolls Royce have always been fantastic engines.
This engine did not have that howling winding noise at start up like in the BAC1-11. This is the planes used by Philippine Airlines in the 70’s and 80’s. I remember as a kid and a teen when the Spey starts up it has a sweet sounding low bass howling sound.
My second time in an airplane was a Mohawk Airlines BAC 1-11 when I was 10 from Detroit MI to Albany NY in the late 60s. First time was a Convair 580 from Saginaw MI to Detroit to catch the 1-11. I was already an airplane nut and this was heaven!
For your safety, do not stand lateral of turbines and compressors. Typically there is a red line on the fuselage drawn to indicate where you shouldn't be in case of a blade exiting. It would also be advised to put a screen in front of the intake. Love this material as an ex-jet engine technician.
Usually that red line on the fuse and engine cowling is where you don't cross whilst the engine is running as you run the high risk of being injested. Uncontained blade failures are thankfully rare.

fantastic...i have a small one 8" dia x 18" long its complete exept for combustion chamber the anular type 8 burners walking stick vaporisers.. max revs 48000 rpm rough guess at thrust 180 kgs more or less cant weld so dont want to louse it up ... my dream is to see it running and making noise have a pair of ceramic bearings for front and rear ... help me ... laurence

Former aircraft and turbine engine mechanic here, and I would be happy to just to have the APU to play with! I guess I’ll just have to build one from a junkyard turbo. 🤷♂️

Funny how they can be noisy all year round but as soon as you play them (Or better them) at their own game suddenly they have a problem with it.
I had one asshole like that. He kept playing his music loud and I asked him to turn it down a bit so he turned it up louder. Well, I didn't take that too well so I turned mine up. Keep in mind that he had a micro system that was 100 Watts max, I had a full blown 12 piece stack system rated at 1200 Watts max. He didn't know what I had. Let's just say that you could hear it half way up my street. He shat his pants when I cranked it up, it shook both our houses. He never did it again.
I just folded my arms, leant against my wall of my door and looked at him with a satisfying grin. He never spoke to me again. It was perfect!

An APU. Bleed air off of the compressor runs the air starter on the Spey.
On the 1-11 the engine started using a Constant Speed Drive Starter. If I remember correctly it was fitted on the lower right fwd face of the gearbox. Can't see it here.
