      It's tough, the scammers try to make the victim fearful that everybody is spying on them. If you go to your local grocery store customer service, there are a LOT of signs up that you shouldn't send money to people you don't know. They also have similar stuff where the gift cards are located.
      The problem is, the scammer convinces them that even the store clerk is part of the "hackers" and to not trust them.

      I think any store with a bitcoin atm needs to put up a big poster warning people about depositing large amounts of money and scams. A simple thing like that could stop a scam right in it's tracks. Also Banks themselves need to warn customers and send out letters warning of what these scams look like.
      The best tool, the best weapon... is awareness.
      I think people need to go to senior centers and talk to people to help them understand to never fall for these scams.

He was pretending to be 2 difficult ppl. One, the guy she thought really liked her and Two, her romantic interests' best guy friend. He was using stock photos and saying how rich/successful he was. Yet, he was asking her for Xbox live, phone cards, and ofc a Walmart gift card. I tried to be as careful as I could with her feelings, knowing that she was lonely and sad. It was a difficult conversation, but I got her to understand what this vile human was doing to her. It hurt her way after she saw the light, but is a lot more aware of these scammers.

At the same time, my coworkers was suspicious of a " customer" he was chatting with and called the customer using the phone number we had on file and confirmed the person that we were chatting with was NOT them, and that our customer had provided their credit card and personal details to "us" earlier that week. I'm glad we were able to get ahead of things for this indivudual before they lost any more money and start on locking down all their banking and tell them to not listen to anything they say if they call back. It's a huge issue for my company in the last like 3 months and it's very frustrating seeing our customers being targetted by these scammers.

      The line between "security" and hassle is a blur. If you want to withdraw _your_ money from a bank, I could argue that (after verifying your identity) making it hard to get _your_ money is an unwanted hassle. It is _your_ money, and you should be able to withdraw it for any reason at anytime with no hassle from the bank.
      I appreciate some simple questions to help protect victims of crime, but after that, let the customer do what they want.

    • @Bambus48

    • @TonyPombo

      @@Bambus48 Yes, good point. But when does that go too far? If you have $100k in the bank and try to withdraw $30k to buy a boat, or something, and the bank won't give you *your* money for "security reasons". That's a problem right?
      My friend (with a lot of money) was explaining how his bank allows him to deposit hundreds of thousands as often as he wanted, but was limited to $25k withdraw per day. He was mad because he said it will take him 2 weeks to get all his money back. That seem "wrong" to me.
      That's not security; that's hassle.

    • @Player_Redacted
      @Player_Redacted 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TonyPombo To be fair, I think the idea of withdrawing large amounts should always be looked at with scrutiny. I'll admit I don't have much experience with multiple banks, but I'd be surprised if closing an account to open another one would require you physically withdrawing all the money and moving it when you could probably just transfer it all by signing a few papers at both banks in person. I mean, are people really trucking around tens of thousands of dollars in cash whenever they move banks?

    • @TonyPombo
      @TonyPombo 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Player_Redacted "are people really trucking around tens of thousands of dollars in cash whenever they move banks" No, you would receive a cashier's check that you take to the new bank. You could do a wire transfer to the new bank, but that can cost several hundred dollars and requires you to keep the old account open for a while.
      Another issue: define "large amounts". If you have $100,000 and you decide to withdraw $50k, is that large? What you have $6 million in that account? Is $50k still large?
      So ya know, a cahier's check written to "cash" is equivalent to cash. So getting a "large' cashier's check is as _concerning_ as cash.
      Basically, I like freedom. Once I authenticate who I am, and I've listened to a quick "beware of scammers PSA", the bank should get out of the way and give me _my_ money.

    I just found your channel and it is fantastic. It hits close to home because my 90 year old dad lost $30,000 to the McAfee scam last year. He normally calls me whenever he has a question, but I was in the middle of moving and he "didn't want to bother me". We tried working with BofA and they were worthless. Why they allowed 30K to be wire transferred to Hong Kong is beyond belief. I have been in the IT business for the past 40 years and you have inspired me to volunteer to do this kind of work when I retire in a year or two. I already mess with the scammers when they call me, but you take it to the ultimate level. Anyway, I just want to say thanks and keep up the great work.

However, before I figured it out, they got into my computer and I was watching my computer be controlled by someone else. I quickly got a very bad feeling. Maybe there can be a national phone like 911, but for people to double check when getting calls like this. They explain the issue and what the scammers are telling them to do so they know it’s a scam. There should be big campaign ads with this number to call.

    What's really nerve-racking about this is... BMO is MY bank, too. BMO Harris (who Barb said her son worked for) is who BMO used to be known as before they merged with Bank of the West. I was with BotW before the merger. They're the American subsidiary of Bank of Montreal.
    I really, really, really hope they've since updated their procedures so they don't allow someone to just... withdraw that kind of money on a whim... Someone who has NO. PRIOR. HISTORY. of those kind of transactions. It'd be one thing if a customer was routinely depositing and withdrawing thousands of dollars of cash at a time - with all the regulatory hurdles that come into play to make sure the person isn't engaging in money laundering. But given how Barb was talking about how she can't afford to lose that money, she definitely isn't that kind of person. So to walk in and withdraw $15K in cash out of the blue had to have raised some flags. How did it not?

    Saving someone feels so good. I was able to save my uncle, who barely speaks english. He came to me in a panic asking me to communicate with these guys because he lost 5000 in bitcoin, and they wanted to help him. At first, I was like, "Okay", then when I saw his computer that is being connected to these guys' screens, I yelled at them for trying to scam my uncle. They tried to convince me, but when I mentioned that I knew what they were doing because I watched scammers payback, they disconnected the call. Idiots.
