Wiring, don't ya just love it when someone who knows nothing does something and you have to figure it out !!! lol Great job brother. You show and tell how it should be done !!! Ride Safe.....
As an Electronics Engineer, I love the wiring bit. I can wire up just about anything. I gotta say, having the Mrs make up a cuppa for you has to be the BEST!! Not too much cake or you'll need a nap before your done! LOL Mike
Isnt she a treasure...nothing like a Earl Grey to unfathom the dark art of sparkage.. hold that thought brother.. if it all goes fizzle and smells of eggy farts... i may send it over to you for a sort out..(can you amagine what Homeland Security would make of the package when they exrayed it..lol)
All electronics are powered by magic smoke. You just have to keep it inside! Once you let the magic smoke out, its a goner. LOL For what the shipping costs are now I could fly over and fix it in person! ;-) Since you really didn't tear into the harness or cut anything you should be fine.
Bro...you got a new sub. This morning the only thing working on my bandit is the headlight, you have no idea the wiring mess I have to figure out, this helped me. Not w I have to find the fuse box
Wishing my mum had twin headlights on her street fighter now.. am looking now for a similar frame you are going to use for your light.. cheers fella, hope you are both well and ride safe.
I did a new loom by hand for my first bike (86 sportster). As simple as that bike was it was a bloody nightmare! The bike had sat up for a good ten years before I got into it. I just pulled all the wires rather than chase electrical gremlins from all the rotted cabling.
anyone considering this should look at the headlight cover that goes above the round headlight and upto the clocks. if you like the cover and are going to buy one the excess wiring can be tied up behind it. sadly I didn't think of this until after I did my wiring
YOU THE MAN LOVE EVERYTHING YOU DO YOU REMIND ME .....OF SOMEONE OH ME HOW OLD ARE YOU I WAS OVER THERE ABOUT 40 YEARS AGO BUT THAT'S SOMETHING ELSE KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK ON THE VIDEOS YOU AND PENNY PITSTOP GOOD LUCK FROM THE USA ST. Hey Buddy, great to hear form you, and what a cool plce you live... im almost 50 now (just a few months to go lol) and i guess proper bikers see a kindred spirit in many places...thats why they call it a Brotherhood aye..? take care buddy, and thanks for your kind support... Del & Penny.
Not boring at all Dell, it gives us rookies insight on all that spaghetti thats hiding underneath that we never see. You sure you dont play the "washboard" .The way you were taking that foam off the light im sure you would be good ! lol! Good vid Dell thanks for the knowledge.
Hey Ron....my word, ive been talent spotted...as you saw i can play the headlight, also 'the fool', and at school was good at playing truant...can i be in the band now please...lol Good to hear form you Brother...thanks for your support.. Del.
Ive rewired a few machines, sometimes its best to isolate the engine and charging electrics and throw the rest in the bin, then with fresh wire just add the ac/dc systems one at a time to your own spec :) Ahh tea, the brain lubricant lol.
No need to take it that far this time, it was just a tidy up and get rid of the excess under the tank with a little re-routing...job done now, can move on to the last fre jobs. .thanks for wathcing fellah, all the best.. Del.
"Dont blame it on the loomage.....Don't blame it on the tapeage....Blame it on the lack of boogie" :D Nice job Del, I'm a sparks by trade and still hate messing about with bike looms, horrible job, but one more step towards the rebirth of Damage :)
Thats the way to see it i guess...get past it and move on...it was only a tidy up, but its still a horrible sticky mess and when you start folding and feeding wiring under things it always feels like a bodge..i like things clean and tidy..done now, time to illumination.. (oh, when ive made some brackets that is..lol)
Good job with the wiring del it's not a job I enjoy What about flipping the light bracket and having the light underslung that would look really different
Yeah very cool.. but sadly the bracket follows the rake of the frame neck and makes a level platform.. if i flipped it..the bracket would face forward..it would rotate the platform through 90 degrees..! also it'd hit the clocks then too...lol
It's all interesting, Del!! I spotted that lovely compressor too. Air tools time? For the uninitiated, perhaps you could do a video on it and how useful it is? All the best to both of you splendid people.
Why thank you kindly sir...it was a little investment in the channel, and i like the idea of a video...but so far i just have the tools that came with the system..things like a blow gun, spray gun, tyre inflator, and air nozel...so no proper tools yet..and ill be placing a few on the Christmas list thats for sure...ill maybe just show them if they are used in a video, rather than make a whole video on it... Thanks for wathcing my freind, always good to hear from you and take care.. Del.
Great video buddy. wondering why Andy's channel is always trash talking about your channel. He is so negative. I dont know what the hell is wrong with him. You've taught me everything I need to know about rebuilding motorcycles. Your awesome in my book.
I'm thinking about getting rid of the boring OEM Triumph scrambler headlight and trying to go off road/mad max with it. I was thinking about getting something like PIAA or Dinalli off-road lights and build a housing around them or something. What should I look for in a headlight? How do I know it will work with my bike or even as a headlight?
I agree twin bates/doms are done to death!..still look good i think... I like the idea of using the standard headlight, but would paint the (light) rim black... Is it pastic.?
Ayup buddy, I think I lost my faith in twin headlights as a 'fighter' mod when Triumph did it as standard on the Speed Triple... suddenly it's not a mod anymore! The whole light is plastic and I have some funky plans for the surround, so stick with it you'll see!
The wiring can be so annoying! Especially when the loom has been chopped! Ended up having to replace the whole lot on my project bike! Must have spent about a week figuring out what went to where and I still have to have another go at it.
Question my sons 1997 1200 Bandit he has just re-built and now the headlight won't switch off, have you ever come across this before? all other light operate as usual from the switch :-(
Any idea where I can purchase electrical clips for a suzuki. I've had issues with my bike overheating. When I've stripped the bike down the clip from the radiator fan to the rest of the loom has melted, hence my main fan isn't kicking in. Can I cut it out and solder the cables together? Or use common electrical connections? Cheers for any help.
Factory wirelumeage,loopage,cutage.spliceage,tapeage,wrapage,bicycletubeage,... Those little plastic triangles under the tank are screaming for a battery tender plug/power socket or something maybe? We'll see ya's
Battery lives in the tail, and ill be fitting a pig tail once its finished and ready to rock and roll....when not in use it just tucks up under the seat... Good to know your watching Sir... take care both.. Del.
Hi del, I've bought a b6 and I think the previous owner has went ott on "trimming" the wire back as you are here, so when the bars are turned it pulls on the lights and a couple of times it has popped off the light socket, which I believe is an MOT fail...so would it be ok/legal to re-solder longer lengths on the said wires to free up for movement, or best buying a new look and starting again?
No so much faster or power but iron out any imperfections flat spots etc. I owned a mk1 bandit 20 years ago I have a mk2 this time I brought it of a guy who was a heron suzuki technician for 30 years he completely nut and bolt rebuilt the bike over lock down and looks stunning but over the 2 years I have owned it its been balanced fully serviced but there is something that just doesn't feel right and a mate of mine said he's was like that so he put a ignition advancer on and it was a different bike felt much better .
Ok, maybe the wrong direction slightly.. ignition advancers don't fix faults.. you must iron that out first.. I had a few old oil cooled Gixers in the past, and the carbs wear over time, and of course the valves need adjusting every service once they get a bit long in the tooth... so maybe carry out a meticulous, careful valve clearance adjustment first.. balance the carbs, and run a compression check too.. it's an old bike now, and they can drop a little compression over higher mileages as the bores wear.. Do all that.. get it spot on, then run it into a dyno centre for a run up and see what the graph says..
Thats exactly what i did...re-wrapped it in fresh tape, and covered the plugs to keep it dry...and ill be shrouding the lot in inner tube once its all done, that makes it not only tough, but hides it really well too... but not yet, i may need to get to it befoe im finsihed...few shake down runs to make sure its all working right.. then final snagging stuff last of all...
Hey del its the bandit 600 95 model . I believe they are the throttle responce or throttle position or carb heaters im not sure which one lol iv googled it and some people say you dont need them at all I was hoping this was the cause of my probs but its prob not I was the guy who wished u lived closer so I could bug u for help lol
Hi mate, you only have one TPS not four, there is a plug on one end of your carb bank, but not four... do you maybe have a picture of it mate, its pretty hard to diagnose stuff on discriptions..maybe it'll be obvious if i can see it..
Hi Jeff.. no mate, yer wiring loom can take a lot of heat with no effects....the factory places the loom on top of the motor already, ive just placed a bit more in there, tucked in tidy and safe...
Hi mate, glad this popped up on my TH-cam recommendations, need some advice, .... need a couple inches chopped off the top of the deauville touring screen, best way to do it myself?
Hi buddy, cutting a screen down is easy enough, don't use machine tools as it can over heat and crack the plastic... mark where you want to cut it on masking tape and then use a hacksaw blade by wrapping tape wound one end so you can hold it, and saw gently through where you want to cut a few mm off the acutal line... then you can use a draw file to sand back to the exact edge you chose... always chapmer the cut end to prevent it cracking in future, and take your time, you'll make a great result !
ive got a fault in my wiring somewhere causing my bike to " switch off" on its own occasionally for want of a better term. i found this out on a twisty heading to a stormin the castle rally last year, wasn't a pleasant experience.... im not the best when it comes to electrics so im just wondering how big a job it is to replace a whole new wiring harness with a new one that works? Edit : Its a 2001 1200s faired bandit.
Hi del can I have a bit of advice please if im sitting on my bike my cylinders are 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 from left to right .does the left coil go to 1 + 4 and the right to 2 + 3 plus which order eg top ht lead or bottom ht lead thanx mark
If you need to "liberate" some turn signal wire, it seems to me it would be easier just to extend the turn signal wire by adding what you needed rather than dig into all that mess and risk damaging something and creating a short or something that WOULD be an absolute bitch. I'm about to take my fairing off my GSF1250S and convert it to a streetfighter, so I'm just researching what I'm getting into this weekend.
Good move mate, you're right, i did just that with my Fighter build.. added a foot to extra wire to both front sets of wires because im gonna wire them through the bars.... but often there is lots and lots of extra length in a loom thats just tucked away and it pays to just check if you have some spare before you go cutting into it aye..
Yes indeed it will. I am absolutely in love with my Bandit but the fairing has been bugging me for almost a hear now since I happened to see one for sale that had been converted on my local Craigslist. I wanted to buy that chap's bike, since it had fewer miles and lots of other upgrades, so I immediately put mine up for sale so I could buy his, but sadly it sold before I could get mine sold. So I kept mine and am now finishing up all the upgrades and the last big one is the fairing. Heading downstairs to dig in now!
Hi del its me again lol. My bike broke down 18 months ago I hab it fixed in a garage it was an electrical problem but since iv had it back its not ticking over its missing and cutting out but when im riding it its fine until the revs drop ,I took it back to him and he reckons its a carb prob most likely a diaphram. I took my tank off drained the petrol it was clean I cleaned the tap, I cleaned the plugs all were fine I trimmed the ht leads and tightened the caps I cleaned the coil connections but its still missing bad so I purchased a set of carbs off a running bike to replace them but as I was just trying to remove my old ones I noticed there are supposed to be 4 connector things comming out the bottom of my carbs with electrical leads connecting but I only have three could this be the cause of the prob cheers del
HI Connor, just remind me of what bike it is mate, and when you say 'connector things'...what exactly are they, and what do they connect to... is it obvious that the fourth one id missing, (broken wires, plug dangling, open socket etc etc) its hard working blind on a dicription... cheers mate let me know Del.
Hi, I have a yamaha dt lc mk3 1987. The lights dont seem to work right. There is no indicators on the bike either. The brake light works with the rear brake pedal but not the front lever. The headlight doesnt work in any way. The horn works as does the kill switch. Any ideas?
Ha ha, mate, seriously?, thats impossible, i have no idea what would be causing all your electrical issues, as with all electrics you need to perform tests with a multimetere to trace current and find where its going and not going. have you tried startking by checking the fuses maybe..? sorry i can just pign you a remedy buddy, its not that possible with such vauge symptoms....you just need to start checking things to trace the faults.. good luck with it..
Moonfleet41 bought it with full mot aswell. Bloke bought it off said battery was flat, which it was so I replaced it. Its just ridiculous. Somebody at some point has chopped and repaired the loom. Can you still buy the looms? How much would this repair cost do you think to find the fault, and repair roughly. Im up in Sheffield. Thanks
JAMMASTERconnor Ok Connor, if its been chopped and butchered about, then you're on a hiding to nothing, so i think the best route here, rather then pay for a mechanic's time for hours of tracing and fiddly repairing....which could add up to silly money....would be to have a look on the net for a second hand wiring loom, ebay, bike breakers all adveretise on there, search the bike you have and see if anything comes up....if its a DT125LC, then pretty much any early model 125 loom will work, its not a complexed one...just ignition and lights... shouldn't rush you more than about £50....and you could probably fit it yerself... Thats what id do if it was my bike...! see how that goes and let me know buddy..
Moonfleet41 ive been searching for a while but no joy, not a dt125lc 12v one, seen a few lcmk1 looms but there 6v. Know anyone who makes em or could you link me one if you find one. I really appreciate it. Thanks
JAMMASTERconnor how about this one... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-DTR125-DT125-DT125-WIRING-LOOM-HARNESS-CDI-COIL-BREAKING-BIKE-/331450064827?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item4d2bf69fbb and it looks like these guys MAKE them... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-DT125LC-1984-85-34Y-Models-Main-Wiring-Loom-Harness-QH040-/321119595813?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item4ac4382d25
Hi Connors.. ok mate, got that. Your bike does indeed use the firing order or 1-2-4-3, and the coils are laced up as follows....reading from left to right facing front as 1234. 1, Left Coil, Bottom lead = plug 1 2, Left Coil, Top Lead = Plug 4 3, Right Coil, Bottom Lead = Plug 3 4, Right Coil, Top Lead, = Plug 2 Hope that helps you mate, you'll also find that the plug leads are different lengths and will fit best if you get the routing right, as above.. Good Luck Del.

Fantastic idea wrapping the rat's nest behind the headstock, and great advice to rewrap to make the 20 year old crappy harness better.

Thanks

Ok Connor, if its been chopped and butchered about, then you're on a hiding to nothing, so i think the best route here, rather then pay for a mechanic's time for hours of tracing and fiddly repairing....which could add up to silly money....would be to have a look on the net for a second hand wiring loom, ebay, bike breakers all adveretise on there, search the bike you have and see if anything comes up....if its a DT125LC, then pretty much any early model 125 loom will work, its not a complexed one...just ignition and lights... shouldn't rush you more than about £50....and you could probably fit it yerself...
Thanks

how about this one... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/YAMAHA-DTR125-DT125-DT125-WIRING-LOOM-HARNESS-CDI-COIL-BREAKING-BIKE-/331450064827?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item4d2bf69fbb
and it looks like these guys MAKE them... www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-DT125LC-1984-85-34Y-Models-Main-Wiring-Loom-Harness-QH040-/321119595813?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item4ac4382d25
Do you know where could I get software wiring diagrams for motorcycles? thanks
In the back of pretty much any good manual buddy..
Where can you find a wiring diagram for a bandit?
Usually at the back of a service manual mate..
I ordered a used Clymer manual from Amazon. I think it's overseas cause of the time it is taking to get here to the states.
Its a bandit 600 95 model del
Hi Connors.. ok mate, got that. Your bike does indeed use the firing order or 1-2-4-3, and the coils are laced up as follows....reading from left to right facing front as 1234.
1, Left Coil, Bottom lead = plug 1
2, Left Coil, Top Lead = Plug 4
3, Right Coil, Bottom Lead = Plug 3
4, Right Coil, Top Lead, = Plug 2
Hope that helps you mate, you'll also find that the plug leads are different lengths and will fit best if you get the routing right, as above..
Good Luck
Del.
I'm watching specifically for trying to neaten up my Honda nighthawk wiring. Boring, but informative. Thanks
Ooooh, nice compressor :)
He was only popping in to get some welding gas, poor Penny balancing that on the back of the Tiger
A little indulgent investment in the casue...lol
What are those brackets for the front lights called I can't seem to find anywhere
