See exactly on what their ban said, no phones near the steel. Now, it could mean a few things: 1. Affraid that the entire structure will act like a giant radio antenna. 2. Affraid people might take videos of the structures. 3. The entire stricture is one giant transformer, and they're affraid that it might woke up.
Man.. Before this rule was put out, I was one who stood near the entrance of Steel Vengeance in my own free time to watch people's phones fly all over the place for entertainment.
Worst idea ever for 2 reasons. I was at Magic Mountain with a friend a month ago and she got an emergency call from her son and had to leave. Imagine someone missing an important phone call standing in a line. Lastly...charging customers money for a locker is greedy and wrong. That rule comes out of nowhere and shouldn't generate a fee for customers.
What did you do before cell phones??? If people werent dumb and didnt bring phones on the ride that they could not secure and we didnt have injuries because of those stupid people then you could let people have phones in line. If you cant deal without your phone then dont ride the ride. Oh well. tough crap

They do, along with metal detectors to see who has a phone or lose items. If u have any lose items u then get marked with a red X stamped. If u don't u get a green check stamped on ur hand. So once seated they go buy in make sure the people who received thus stamp have put their phones away. I think it kind of slows things down a Lil bit. But it's effective I guess.
That's a bad idea. I understand where you are coming from, but think. Theres always gonna be the one person that's gonna take a bunch of phones. That's also a concern with ride ops and wether you can trust them.
The thing is.....Cedar Point USED to have bins on ride platforms. Every ride had one. However, on a lot of their more popular attractions - Like GateKeeper and Maverick - they got rid of these and either use the locker option or cubbies that are just for open-toed shoes. It's ridiculous and I just don't understand the logic (if there is any) behind these new policies.
The issue is that people bring too much crap to the amusement parks. You really dont need anything at the park outside your phone and your credit card. So when people have all this s*** that they dont need but lug around then you have people getting on the ride and having to spend 30seconds putting their stuff in a bin which slows dispatches and makes everyone wait longer. If people were intelligent and understood the concept of "sit down and buckle up" the ride experience would be better. The issue is people are dumb and they are trying to accommodate to the idiots.
The answer is that people will steal items from the bins. Additionally, they would need three separate sets of bins, one for each separate train (which is possible but would take space). This would slow down loading as people would need to pass through the train to load up the bin, and that may mean the timing could prevent them from running three trains.
So don’t bring so much crap with you. Realistically all you need is your wallet and phone. Those things can be put in the new pouches. And the bins at most places lock so the ride ops lock them between trains so that when train B comes in the bin for Train A is locked. I don’t understand this unnecessary desire to bring so much crap to the parks.
Why don't all parks just have bins. It easy and inexpensive. At my home park Wonderland, almost every ride (coaster/flat) has them. Plus they are always locked during the ride and there is always someone standing beside them making sure no tries to steal anything! There you go, easy and effective!
Bins slow down operations at bigger parks. You unfortunately have a lot of people who need to put a thousand items away, and also people who wait until the last second to put an item away, causing the whole dispatch process to restart.
Dollywood has bins in every coaster station and their dispatches are rarely longer than a minute. If parks had people trained to still use them quickly, that would be a very efficient way to still have fast dispatches.
I went to Dollywood a few years ago and I LOVED that they had bins! It was really convenient for me and my friends and it’s something that all rides at every theme park should have. It’s quick and easy and will help make things much more convenient for everybody.
Even with the bins: I really enjoyed how they have where you can move lockers all day for $7 which fit a backpack, a cup, a fanny pack, and a popcorn tin! I thought that was a great deal also!

This coming from a Cedar Fair fanboy (CP’s my “home park” - I’m from Florida LOL), but it’s funny how smaller parks like Dollywood and Holiday World really seem to have their stuff together for the most part concerning things like this. And I don’t buy the whole “it slows down dispatch capacity” argument BS. Cedar Fair has plenty of popular rides scattered throughout the various parks that maintain high ride capacity and, still have locking storage bins in the station; Maverick, The Beast, Diamondback, Intimidator, Mamba, Prowler, etc. sure, they’re not the same as Dragster, Fury, I-305, SteVe, Millie, TT, Mystic Timbers, and a few others, but still....
You answered the question as to why American parks don't have European style lockers. It's because they would need to hire extra people. They also, obviously, don't want to lose out on the extra money from the lockers, even if it's only $1 or $2. They could always do the Disney-style pouches, which wouldn't require hiring extra people but again, money. My last visit to a CF park (Carowinds) was in 2015. My friend and I opted to put our things in the $2 locker before riding Fury325 because we wanted to enjoy the ride and not stress out about our things, even though as an expert coaster enthusiast he does wears zipper cargo pants to the parks. We really wanted to ride it again one last time before leaving as the line was very short, but one thing stopped us - those stupid $2 lockers. Stressing out about whether your belongings are safe (whether on your person bc they may fall out, or in an unlocked unmonitored bin at the station) and having to pay money every time you want to ride a ride at a pay-only-for-admission park REALLY takes away from your enjoyment. Most parks have ALWAYS been very shortsighted when it comes to how their guests feel while inside the park, and sadly a lot of people don't know how much better it could be because they only go for special occasions and therefore don't really care about spending the money but also come away feeling... sort of ripped off with the whole experience. Maybe I just answered my own question about why parks don't care about nickel and diming. Edit: Parks are also missing out on the free publicity they could get from people taking selfies or whatever and posting them on social media while waiting in line, especially if it's for a new ride. Again, shortsighted...
Here's why bins are a stupid idea: 1. I work GateKeeper and people move slow af putting their stuff away. It does slowdown dispatches a lot regardless of what you saw at Europa Park. 2. People would have stuff stolen more often, especially by accident because someone could grab the wrong phone on the way out. 3. People would just not put their phone into the bins when they board AKA making the whole entire thing pointless and there is no real way to tell if someone actually even put their phone in a bin. The real solution is to just put zip pouches on the back of the seat in front of you and write on there "If you are caught removing any items from a pouch after the train dispatches you will be immediately removed from the park with no refunds." Easiest/Cheapest solution that would work every time. You're welcome Cedar Fair. BTW they're clearly only interested in doing this to the RMC's because no other ride has or has ever had this policy.
if you do your job right, it shouldn't slow down dispatches at all. at diamondback ive seen the ride ops take bags and loose articles BEFORE the gates open, and pass them across the train to put in the bin as if there were no lockers.
Yet Diamondback still stacks every train...funny. Also with Gatekeeper most people can't figure out how to undo their seatbelt, or don't raise their harness all the way so we are busy doing that. Plus the gates open immediately when it parks.
RayDLX The bins on GateKeeper are very small. Maverick has big bins and it does not appear to me that dispatches slow down due to bins. However, I am not a ride operator, so it could be a different story from their POV.
Bins are great. I also like something that Disney sometimes does with pouches on the rides themselves. They could put zipper pouches right in front of your seat so you put your phone securely in them before you are buckled. That's probably the fastest way. But bins work well too.
And going up the lift-hill, you unzip the pouch to get out your phone so you can film the ride and plaster it all over social media so your friends back home can see it. And people are idiots.....at the end of the ride, while they are getting out on the wrong side of the coaster car, now they are forgetting their crap they put in the coaster car glovebox. hahahaha
Morey’s Piers has a walk through metal detector at the Great Nor’Easter entrance and free lockers just outside of it. You just put in your phone number as a code, and you get a free locker for 30 mins (or longer depending on the wait time). Works perfectly

In my view, one more problem with no phones in line would be: what about families? If the kids want to go on a coaster but the parents do not, I would imagine some would want updates in like, just to see if they are okay. And if they don’t want to pay for a locker, and so leave phones with non-riders, what means of communication do they have to meet up after the ride is over? Lastly, especially with Steel Vengeance, we all know that lots of people are probably gonna be excited for all the great photo opportunities in line. Like you said, the best idea is just having bins at the platform- Europa does it for bags etc., what difference does it make having a small bin for phones?
That's where people/families will have to talk before they separate and the kids know where mom and dad will be once they get off the ride. My husband and I do this all the time as he rides rides I don't. I wait for him most of the time right there were riders get off the ride. We had to do this decades ago long before cell phones were invented.
I hate this argument because it’s not really about communicating but instead it is an excuse for your dependence on the cell phone. You can live without your phone while In line and grab it at the end and then text if need be.....OR communicate a time and place to meet beforehand. We where able to do it before. I think we have gotten obnoxious with our use of phones..
Coaster Studios They do something similar at my home park in England. It is a gurstlagter earofighter called rage. Every seat is labeled with a number (train 3, seat 8) and there are draws to put phones in and there is almost always a ride op watching it to stop people stealing it.
Could put free lockers by the rides like Hershey park has done with sky rush/ superdooper looper since you aren't allowed to bring bags into these rides lines anymore
Just Another TH-cam Account In my home park SFGA, there are storage areas/bins in ALL roller coasters to put phones, glasses, hats, etc. Yet when I visited CP I was shocked to see that they do not offer this especially when having these big coasters. Legit the best option is having bins or lockers that are locked and unlocked for each train.
Are they free? I saw them at the end of the line and saw people using them, but the worker at the front of the line wouldn't let us in the line without putting our stuff in a locker first (I had an obvious fanny pack)
Yeah Kennywood just has bins at the platform and the say something like "Please put any loose arrivals such as phones, hats, and sun glasses in the red bins located by the exit or leave them with a non-rider" and "Kennywood is not responsible for any loose arrivals stolen or that goes missing"
The problem with "I have buttoned and zippered pockets" is that this rule is really to combat people taking out their phones and recording. Something you see a decent amount at Great Adventure
I like the idea of the two-way lockers at the end of the queue since it also reduces the amount of lockers needed at a given point since only the people on the coaster plus a few extra need the lockers at a given time. It's a good sell to park as a way to reduce the cost of buying lockers.
I know this video is a non issue now, but I figured I’d weigh in since I worked SV when this policy happened. We had multiple instances of riders being hit by phones, but the rule change actually happened very suddenly when we had 1 really bad incident where a girl got hit in the eye and we started the no phone rule the very next day. The rule might have been considered before that but that was the event that caused them to pull the trigger. The issue with locker prices was that the lockers are from an outside company so CP can’t simply make them free because a portion of the money goes to that company (although from what I’ve heard they’ve finally reached some kind of deal to do so now). Bins would be pretty crap on SV, the trains are low capacity, the interval is already long compared to other coasters as is, and thanks to iROC the procedures for checking restraints is bizarre and leaves operators constantly waiting on riders and that’s without bins wasting even more time. I worked SV sometimes the following year as well when it had the pouches and just from a ride op perspective I preferred the no phone rule. Going from almost never stacking in 2018 to ALWAYS stacking in 2019 was really aggravating. As a guest though yeah having no phone in that line would be pretty garbage, I never dealt with it personally though since I could just test ride before the park opened. The biggest issue was what if someone actually had an emergency while in line? Sure we always had 2 or 3 ride ops roaming the line but still, medical situations happen on a daily basis at CP and when you dial 911 even from your cell it goes straight to CP and is way faster than an employee running to a park phone
I agree with the money grab thing. Making people pay is the real problem. We already pay through the nose to go to the park, so why make people pay for something that is allegedly for safety. Maybe they could provide bins on the platform that people can put their stuff in, I've seen it done at a couple of parks (Kennywood and Knoebels). It works fine and doesn't really slow down the loading process.
That's how it was always done in the old days. This policy is just going to make people less safe. I actually got patted down by a wannabe cop at SFGAd. Riders are just going to sneak their phones in arcane places that the guards can't touch, and more phones will be falling.
I always leave my phone in my bag, and I end up putting my bag in the cubbies at the station before getting on a ride. However, for rides where you have to pay for a locker, someone in the group either stays behind with our stuff, or we don't go on that ride. Luckily, there's only one ride that has lockers at Canada's Wonderland, whereas the rest of them are either locked bins that are colour coded for each train, or they're cubbies when there's only one train.

It's guardian, the interactive ride in the mountain. They have a no bag policy but I don't think they worry about stuff in your pockets. It's because the station platform doesn't have room to fit everyone's bags (which is their own fault for designing the station like that) so they offset the cost to the customers instead of providing free lockers
I'd voluenteer to be the bag turtle lol as I only solo ONE coaster at Wonderland and am primarily a flat and water rides person. Yes I'm near Wonderland by 2.5-3 hours.

@@skull917 They did that at another amusement park here(Elitch Gardens in Denver, CO) then it made the news that people were leaving their bags next to the locker and were being stolen and they were forced to change it back.
Two things: 1. I believe having on ride pouches like what Magic Mountain was testing on Twisted Colossus is a good idea, that could be another solution to this problem. 2. Can we just ban together and tweet this video at someone from Cedar Fair to further get the word out? Because I think you’re on to a few things with these ideas.

Yep. We had this problem at Kings Dominion at the Twister Timbers ride. A boy with colored hair at the entrance of the line interrogated us about our phones. Being an honest person, I told him they were secured in my cargo shorts pockets and he said it was still not allowed. We refused to pay for a locker and missed out riding that rollercoaster. We already paid to ride the rollercoaster with our admission tickets. Because of that, we also refused to purchase anything else in the park- no food, no drinks, no gifts. We drove all the way from near Nashville, TN and usually buy souvenirs from parks we visit. Also, storms had moved through during the afternoon and lingering showers remained nearby but not at the park through early evening. All rides, including indoor, were shut down for hours. There had been no lightning for over 2 hours within 10 miles of the park and rides continued to be closed. The nearest T-storm was south of Richmond at that time. I went to the front gate, informed the employee I was a weatherman and I was very informed about the situation and I wanted to know what the problem was. Did we just need to leave???... because waiting around in the park doing nothing with no explanation on when anything would resume operation was a massive waste of our time since we had driven many hours. 15-minutes after my complaint, an announcement was made that the National Weather Service had informed them it was safe to open rides. Also, Volcano was closed with no explanation. Many of the employees looked like they were miserable at their jobs. A large African-American man operating the Eiffel Tower elevator vented and complained to us about how he did not want to work that day for 12 hours. His job was to sit on a stool and push the up/down button. My wife asked him why he had to work for 12 hours and he said because employees were either just not showing up to work or being fired. In another conversation, one of the workers even told us to go to Busch Gardens, because it was better, and that was where we went the next day, and yes, it was much better. Kings Dominion had 3 good re-ridable rollercoasters that we were able to enjoy, but the way that park is operated really sucks- especially for people who drive a long ways.
Kings Dominion does bins on coasters. They lock one side up when one group is on the ride and the other side is unlocked to let previous riders collect their things and oncoming riders to put in their own stuff. Which is really nice.
As European i dont get this kind of policy. In a lot of european Park there are free lockers either direct at the station or in the park itself. Which is clever, i mean why you should charge your guest Money for everything in the Park. As you mentioned it just decrease safety and happiness of your costumers.
This is a money grab. You mean to tell me that my phone wouldn't fall out on Bizarro, Superman, Green Lantern, and Nitro at SFGA, but will ONLY on El Toro, Kingda Ka, and Joker? Or only on Twisted Timbers and not Volcano, Anaconda, Intimidator 305, and Dominator? Nah... It's only on the popular rides. As someone who got a supervisor at SFGA recently to explain this, to which he agreed with this assessment, but said he didn't have the power to override it, I see it for what it is. Thing is, I always have zippered pockets, not even buttons, zippers, for this very reason.
OR what they could've done was pulled something with New Texas Giant and how they have these little cases on the ride to put your phone in it, and then the bags for the lockers.
I'm a SFGA junkie. I'm there usually 2 times or more per month. The Joker Coaster definitely should be no phones. I've lost my phone (in a button up cargo shorts pocket) and my son lost his as well (back pocket). The others...no chance. Especially Kingda Ka. Only way you're losing a phone on that ride is if you take your phone out while on the ride smh
If people knew how to keep their phones in their pockets, this wouldn't be a problem. People try to take pics and vids while riding coasters and lose their phones. That's why a dumb rule is necessary; to protect other people from the dumb things that some people do.
LevDotCom I agree. People are in fact, dumb. My problem is, the "fix" that some of these parks are doing is an obvious money grab. If it is for safety, then free lockers and I'm not bitching. Hersheypark made people put stuff in lockers on Skyrush on one of my most recent visits. No charge for it. No complaints.
This policy bummed me out so much as I'm planning my trip to Cedar Point (hopefully) next year and not being able to take some pictures from within the queue would be so sad. I do have cargo shorts with zipable pockets and just like you said in all the years of riding coasters.. never did it fall out or got destroyed / damaged. This is way late, I recognize but I have something to add. As you know, cedar fair is big on safety, and checking every restraint every time is literally the number one priority; a train WILL not dispatch until a ride op has verified by pushing and pulling on a restraint that it is secured and locked. I've never been to Europa, but from what I've seen in videos, it looks like physically checking each restraint is not something they do, which is why they can dispatch so quickly even with bins. Having worked a summer as a ride op at cedar point, I can assure you, bins drastically slow down dispatch. I worked maverick, one of the only major coasters to still have bins. Maverick has quite possibly the slowest dispatch of the major coasters at 75 seconds due to the two-train dispatch, and even despite that, operators still only sometimes manage to hit interval. I digress, my point being that cedar fair encourages - no, requires - that ride ops physically check every restraint, every time, and this is time consuming, but ensures rider safety. Side note, the GP doesn't understand that rides have dispatch intervals... and usually take their time to and from the bins, so its more than just "oh, it only takes 5 seconds to put your stuff in a bin." WAY too many people don't even empty their pockets until they're *at* the bins.
Even better than bins on ride platforms, I suggest Cedar Fair take the Disney/New Texas Giant route, and place zippered pockets for loose articles in the train on the seat/zero car directly in front of passengers. This method allows for rapid dispatches (riders do not have to climb over to the opposite side of the platform to secure articles), is relatively inexpensive to implement, and allows riders to keep his or her devices with themselves throughout the queue.
IMO, Universal's system would work the best. They have free lockers, and there are metal detectors at the start of the line for all their big rides, and there is enough theming that people don't get bored. Of course, another idea would be to do what they have done with their waterpark, in conjunction with their current locker policy, which is to give park guests an electronic wristband that they can scan at a kiosk at the beginning of a ride, after which they will wait the specified time, and when the wristband says "Ride Now", they can take it to the ride entrance, and enter the line, assuming that they have placed their stuff in a free locker. That way, park guests can do other things while they wait, and they don't have to stand around in line with nothing to do, and make their feet sore from standing in place too long. Maybe there could also be a waiting area at the entrance to each major ride, where there would be benches, air conditioning, and some theming, like maybe a short 5-minute movie playing to keep park guests entertained.
You must have been there on an off day. When I went (many times and will never again), the detectors slowed everything down, lockers were very very very hard to get as most would be taken, and you had to fight like all hell to even get in there. Room for 4, but need for 50! To hell with pre-ride lockers and lets fix the damned problem! Auto lockers on platforms or zippered boxes right on the ride, you know, like the rest of the world does!

The swapping your bag for a wrist band option is the best. It should be implemented at all theme/amusement parks. It is on newer rides in Merlin parks, and I like it. Also having bins or cupboards that you can place your stuff in as you board the ride is a good idea too. CF should just make the lockers free as I would refuse to pay.
Trouble is that unlike lockers, phones and other items are more prone to be stolen than in a locker and people will complain and sue despite the liabiity policy of not being responsible. It all comes to down to liability when it comes to any major company's actions. It's not so much about what makes sense as is avoiding as much liability as possible.

A gentleman lost his phone on raptor years ago when he jumped over the restricted area of fence the train killed him. Loose articles is a policy. Now at full force. Glasses keys flying out of pockets even loose change are all dangers. Being a ride attendent i found pipes sacks money jewelry. My duty was to ensure that items lost. Possible rewards, after end of season no claims. Becomes another mans trash becomes my treasure. In lost and found dept. Flying objects will never be stopped in amusement industries even if it's puke. I've been handicapped for 6 years i use a light saber cane for mobility. I also have a service dog that will guard it at the exit if he doesn't get taken as well LMAO! Guest relations is slacking even non secure deposit boxes exit side of rides.
just rode steel vengeance for the first time yesterday, and i had my phone with me. I too thought it was a ridiculous rule until i rode it for the first time. That thing never stops and is all over the place unlike something like millennium force where it is long and drug out. But i can say that is the best coaster I have ever been on, nothing else i have ridden compares to it and would gladly wait 2 hours for it again.
On the Raven at Holliday World & Splashing Safari, there are lockers on the exit platforms with keys in them. You walk up, unlock the locker, put things in, lock it, take the key is on the wrist band and put it around your wrist, then ride. When your ride is done, you go back to the same locker but you leave the key there for the next person to use.
Something I think could help with this is something SeaWorld San Diego implemented with Electric Eel. When you enter that station, they have the option to pick up a fanny pack where you can put your phone, wallet, etc. in and strap around your waist. Idk if Steel Vengeance is so wild that even the fanny packs would fly off, but it definitely works for Electric Eel.
Here's an idea: Bring a bag! Backpack, purse, whatever floats your boat and put your phone in there. Much easier spotting someone trying to take your bag than just a phone. Also handy for carrying other items such as maybe a wallet, or any souvenirs/game prizes.
here in Britain at Thorpe Park, there's baggage areas at the stations of coasters. Nemesis Inferno and Colossus has shelves at the station, and when the train you're in is dispatched the sliding grate is moved over for the riders just gone. Saw The Ride, The Swarm and Stealth have huts where staff put your bags in square shelves and give you a corresponding wristband which you give back on the exit path from the ride.
Free lockers are definitely needed. I won’t ride any ride that I have to pay extra for. And won’t even bother visiting parks that have this “must pay” policy. But those free lockers need to be in the line somewhere. Expecting people to not have their phones for hours and not be able to take photos of the rides from queue line angles is just stupid and not customer friendly at all.

Guaranteed they've thought about this loooong ago. There's not enough benefit or detriment currently to convince them to do it, or they already would be. Less people riding Steel Vengeance? That's a good thing when the wait is 2 hours. This means more people walking around buying stuff, or at least a shorter wait for their hottest attraction. If people opt to rent the locker, well, that's obviously more money for virtually no investment. You can bet those lockers paid for themselves within the first season, if not the first month.

Have phone incidences increased since they became common around 1998 or have they increased since the use of social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat became popular around 2015 where most of the reported incidences started occurring? Saying lockers reduce incidences is baseless. You can justify why it would make rides safer, but has it? I could make a claim saying that reports of lost and stolen articles has increased since the inception of lockers and I’d have just as much merit.
When I was at Cedar Point someone took their phone out on the Blue Streak when they were halfway up the hill. They stopped the ride and took the phone.
I was just at great adventure yesterday and it was crazy, in the beginning of the day no one cared if we had bags we could just leave them by the exit. But as the day went on we were getting yelled at for trying to go in with bags. For example I didn’t want to ride el toro so I volunteered to hold the phones and stuff. I wanted to walk through the line and wait at the exit since I’ve done that before and this way I could still talk and hang out with my friends and they wouldn’t even let me do that it was very upsetting the way that was being treated. No workers would mention safety hazards either they would just repeatedly yell at us to go pay for a locker or we can’t ride. They really need to do the whole thing with free lockers or cubby’s. I’ve already payed to get in the park I should not have to pay again to store my things.
The problem that I have with this rule: if I branch off from my parents and they need to contact me or I need to contact them then we can’t contact each other. Also, if something happens while in line, there’s no way to contact anyone that I would need to contact.
Oh for heaven's sake! You are only going to be without your phone for 2 hours. As soon as you get off, you go to the locker and get it back and then call your parents. Or do what we used to do decades ago long before cell phones ever existed... plan a time and meet place before you separate.
They should do what (I think) Europa Park does with the double-sided lockers, but make an alternate exit route for those who used a locker (and free lockers/a $10 or less locker season pass)
In all the spanish theme parks i've been to there are free lockers right in the train station so you can have all your stuff in the line and once you go to ride the train you can put it in the locker located on the other side , which closes when the train starts running and only opens when it gets to the station.
Love the idea about raising ticket prices the most, I think people are less likely to complain if they pay for it all up front no matter how expensive it is. At least you know what you're paying for, it's basically human psychology 101.
in australian theme parks although we got lockers they overcharge us more but most coaster rides have an open storage box where you put your belongings until you come off the ride normally the trains pull right up beside them where you step off the ride
This is the exact same policy that six flags great adventure has for almost every single roller coaster at this point. It is the worst. I just went to a few parks in Japan, and they had an amazing phone policy. They have metal detectors to make sure you don't bring a phone onto the roller coaster, BUT they provide free lockers. All of the keys for the lockers are attached to bracelets that they give you when you ride the roller coaster. I don't understand why parks in America haven't implemented policies like this.
Knoebels simply lets you put your bag off to the side of the platform on most rides, including the wooden coasters. The main exceptions are Impulse and Flying Turns, which you shouldn’t have phones on for obvious reasons, and they do use bins.
As I see it, lockers should only be mandatory for rides where the loading and unloading areas are in different locations, like with Millennium Force (where unloading is in a separate building behind the loading station, as part of the way the blocks are configured to allow for three train operation) or Top Thrill Dragster (where unloading is on the curve at the turnaround).
At disneyland Paris you can ride any roller coasters with your bag inbetween your legs. I did not see any lockers in the park except the one at the front gate used for larger bags.
I agree 100%. as an avid coaster rider, i take a lot of photos in the queue, i make sure to have pants that have a button pocket and have never had an issue. I hate these policies, i understand why they have them, but it's stupid. Go back to on platform bins, it was better then. Dorney Park in PA still uses on platform bins and they dispatch just fine. and it's a Cedar Fair Park.
I would definitely rather just have bins. As a kid who doesnt get to go to many amuesment parks at all like Cedar Point which the only park I really go to because its close, I dont want the tickets raised a penny. Since thats the biggest factor why I dont go to Amuesment parks.
I agree with many of your points on this certain situation. I personally wear shorts with zipper pockets specifically for the reason that my loose articles stay in those pockets, saving me money and time needed to get a locker. These shorts have worked on every single ride that I’ve ever been on and it has worked on RMCs like Outlaw Run and Storm Chaser. Bins on the ride platforms is definitely a simple and therefore best fix for the situation, but I guess I’ll have to get some money to put my phone in a locker since I’ll probably be at Cedar Point on August 3rd. At least my season pass will cover the rest of the cost.
Zek Teh Kek I always have zipper pockets if I'm bringing my phone in parks anyways, not the safest to have it in an exposed pocket. If I don't have a zipper pocket I don't bring my phone hah
Dizzy Melodies I always wear zipper pockets to amusement parks and I’ve taken them on TTD, Banshee, and Steel Vengeance and not once has anything even come close to falling out of the pocket.
Didn't know about this policy until I went up to the ride after running from the front of the park and I'm walking into the line and she sees my pocket and saw my phone and tells me to put it in the locker, so I rode the ride later after putting the phone in my friend's car, it is such an inconvienence.
Working at an amusement park, I can tell you bins on the platform do slow down dispatches, especially when you're trying to enforce absolutely no phones, and they don't work: items get stolen, people ignore them, and then you're taking more time checking at the platform for phones in pockets because people will not do it themselves... Even with bins, hundreds of disclaimers about not being liable for items lost on the ride, and quick visual checks for phones and other items in pockets as guests are getting in, there are still a bunch of phones, glasses, wallets, etc found throughout the coaster paths.
TBF many people will try and record the ride with their phone. I think the best solution is to do something similar to what Knotts Berry Farm does with Pony Express with the sliding door bins and a combination of metal detectors. It takes one ride operator 10 seconds to slide the door, no extra employees, and it's near full proof.
This video had some great points! I've stood in a 2+ hour line at steel vengeance 6 or 7 times since this rule and honestly if you are there with friends not having your phone and interacting with people in line is awesome. For people who haven't been yet, there are usually 2 or 3 employees who roam the entire line staring at your pockets. So to solve this problem for myself, I got some cycle shorts that have a pocket on them which you can't see from the outside and lets you turn your actual pockets inside out to prove you don't have your phone. You are allowed to have your bluetooth headphones in the line so if you pair those up before entering you can at least listen to some music. I just use my apple watch to change the song or scroll through the library . Watch also sends text and takes phone calls, so if you need to use your phone to communicate you're still able to do so. I don't know about the android watch but the apple watch doesn't need to be near the phone for these features since it has its own cellular connection so you can continue to pretend your phone isn't on you or actually just not have it :)
I can sort of understand this, because when my family went to ride steel vengeance, my dad rode with his phone because he has never lost a phone on a ride, and we've ridden hundreds of rides. My dad had his phone IN A VELCROW POCKET when he lost it on steel vengeance. So I can understand the blank solution,cut they do need to make lockers free.
MagnificentBISH, cargo pockets aren't secure enough. I got through my ride on Steel Vengeance by putting my phone on my back pocket. I can't lose my phone if I'm sitting on it.
Let me start off by saying as a Coaster enthusiast like myself I Always have Zipper Pockets so my phone or Wallet doesn't fly off on the Roller Coasters.

I don't always have my phone or camera with me when I ride rides because I give it to a friend who is a non rider, if I'm someplace where there's all riders then I have to take my phone and camera with me to the station and then if they have a bin to put them in that's where I put it. That's what parks have been doing in the past, I wouldn't see why it would be at problem at Cedar Point or Kings Dominion to do that. It may hold up dispatches, but shouldn't by a whole lot, if you just put it in the bin quickly and get onto the ride quickly shouldn't be much problem. I also like what you said about what they do in Europe, maybe something they could do as well.
At Universal we had free lockers and metal detectors on the outdoor rollercoasters and we still had issues with the guests who wanted to bring their phones. Cedar Point just did what you suggested this season with the free lockers in the queue near the station. They’re very small, and they have metal detectors now.
They could just do what Disney does on coasters and have a mesh bag in front of you on the ride vehicle for loose articles. That way people with keys, glasses, etc. could keep them in line and just put them in the bag that would be within 2 feet of them while they ride.
That works fine for smaller rides, like those at Disney, but it won't work for a 200 ft, 100 mph coaster with inversions. And it only works for smaller items, which people are likely to leave in their pockets anyway.
I think the issue is people not having pockets that are secure enough for their smaller items... I don’t see why it wouldn’t work as long as the bags were properly secured with either Velcro or a zipper of some sort. Just add some padding on the back so nothing could bang against the train too hard.
They already had bins in the station and got rid of them which is WHY this is a money grab. The only thing I see positive that you can get a locker all day for 10 bucks. Raising ticket prices they did that 2 years ago when the state raised their taxs. With this money grab rule they are not thinking about people with health issues. That phone is their key to keep calm in the line or someone that has OCD.
E K wife and I are flying up from Austin in 2 weeks. We always secure our phones with zipper pockets but we have Note 8s so I may not think it worth it to try to sneak them on. Are all lockers at all locations optional in time used? If it's just $10 all day and we can get one by SV we will for sure go that route.

That’s an annoying policy. I think the idea of the free lockers is good. The issue with bins is that it can’t be enforced. I think they could do a metal detector and free lockers, like Hollywood rrr and Incredible Hulk at universal. Great vid!
So much to learn from other parks. There are cubby holes right across the other side of the loading platform that one can store everything in. Grab it on your way out... Looks like I wont be visiting CP parks now. One of the reasons I will no longer use Universal. Their lockers are a nightmare! I want to use my phone while I wait!
I just got back to the US from Germany and I went to Europa park and wow I was impressed! Exactly as you said, every ride had places to put your stuff and it was organized and secure and every dispatch was 30-60 seconds.... people want to ride the ride it doesn’t take long to put stuff in a locker thing! Every ride was like this! I also went on the ride with the Lockers in the que line and was also impressed, it took 20 seconds to put everything in the locker and then get back in line and it was easy to get it all out at the end too! Catch up America
I also think about how many people go to Cedar Point every single day, and how many people are in the ques for rides like Steel Vengeance... They're gonna need a lot of lockers.
Dorney Park and Hershey Park do stuff similar to some of these ideas. Almost every roller coaster has bins located in their respective stations for you to drop bags off. And for rides like Skyrush over in Hershey, they offer lockers that are free for the first hour and then after that they're only a couple bucks. But if you plan out your ride you can typically avoid waiting over an hour unless you wanted front seat. I wish more parks would adopt these ideas though.
I think the issue isn't people who leave their phones in their pockets while riding, I think it's when people pull out their phone to take videos or pictures while they're riding. SOLUTION: Change the policy to kicking out people who pull out their phones while riding.
The phone could slip out of the pocket during airtime moments and launches. On inverted and suspended rollercoasters like Iron Dragon and Raptor, it's less of an issue because they only have positive G-forces, but Steel Vengeance is full of ejector airtime.
At Hersheypark they have this policy too for some of the rides, however they offer lockers right next to the queue lines that are free for 2 hours which is usually plenty of time to wait on the line and go on the ride.
On rides in the uk there are almost allways storage facilities in or close to the station and there is often netting or metal meshes above pathways that come close to the ride area

Worst idea ever for 2 reasons. I was at Magic Mountain with a friend a month ago and she got an emergency call from her son and had to leave. Imagine someone missing an important phone call standing in a line. Lastly...charging customers money for a locker is greedy and wrong. That rule comes out of nowhere and shouldn't generate a fee for customers.
What did you do before cell phones??? If people werent dumb and didnt bring phones on the ride that they could not secure and we didnt have injuries because of those stupid people then you could let people have phones in line. They do, along with metal detectors to see who has a phone or lose items. If u have any lose items u then get marked with a red X stamped. If u don't u get a green check stamped on ur hand. So once seated they go buy in make sure the people who received thus stamp have put their phones away. I think it kind of slows things down a Lil bit. But it's effective I guess.

The thing is.....Cedar Point USED to have bins on ride platforms. Every ride had one. However, on a lot of their more popular attractions - Like GateKeeper and Maverick - they got rid of these and either use the locker option or cubbies that are just for open-toed shoes. It's ridiculous and I just don't understand the logic (if there is any) behind these new policies.
The issue is that people bring too much crap to the amusement parks. You really dont need anything at the park outside your phone and your credit card. So when people have all this s*** that they dont need but lug around then you have people getting on the ride and having to spend 30seconds putting their stuff in a bin which slows dispatches and makes everyone wait longer. If people were intelligent and understood the concept of "sit down and buckle up" the ride experience would be better. The issue is people are dumb and they are trying to accommodate to the idiots.
The answer is that people will steal items from the bins. Additionally, they would need three separate sets of bins, one for each separate train (which is possible but would take space). This would slow down loading as people would need to pass through the train to load up the bin, and that may mean the timing could prevent them from running three trains.
So don’t bring so much crap with you. Realistically all you need is your wallet and phone. Those things can be put in the new pouches. And the bins at most places lock so the ride ops lock them between trains so that when train B comes in the bin for Train A is locked. I don’t understand this unnecessary desire to bring so much crap to the parks.

Why don't all parks just have bins. It easy and inexpensive. At my home park Wonderland, almost every ride (coaster/flat) has them. Plus they are always locked during the ride and there is always someone standing beside them making sure no tries to steal anything! There you go, easy and effective!

Dollywood has bins in every coaster station and their dispatches are rarely longer than a minute. If parks had people trained to still use them quickly, that would be a very efficient way to still have fast dispatches.

I went to Dollywood a few years ago and I LOVED that they had bins! It was really convenient for me and my friends and it’s something that all rides at every theme park should have. It’s quick and easy and will help make things much more convenient for everybody.
Even with the bins: I really enjoyed how they have where you can move lockers all day for $7 which fit a backpack, a cup, a fanny pack, and a popcorn tin! I thought that was a great deal also!

You answered the question as to why American parks don't have European style lockers. It's because they would need to hire extra people. They also, obviously, don't want to lose out on the extra money from the lockers, even if it's only $1 or $2. They could always do the Disney-style pouches, which wouldn't require hiring extra people but again, money.
My last visit to a CF park (Carowinds) was in 2015. My friend and I opted to put our things in the $2 locker before riding Fury325 because we wanted to enjoy the ride and not stress out about our things, even though as an expert coaster enthusiast he does wears zipper cargo pants to the parks. We really wanted to ride it again one last time before leaving as the line was very short, but one thing stopped us - those stupid $2 lockers.
Stressing out about whether your belongings are safe (whether on your person bc they may fall out, or in an unlocked unmonitored bin at the station) and having to pay money every time you want to ride a ride at a pay-only-for-admission park REALLY takes away from your enjoyment. Most parks have ALWAYS been very shortsighted when it comes to how their guests feel while inside the park, and sadly a lot of people don't know how much better it could be because they only go for special occasions and therefore don't really care about spending the money but also come away feeling... sort of ripped off with the whole experience. Maybe I just answered my own question about why parks don't care about nickel and diming.
Edit: Parks are also missing out on the free publicity they could get from people taking selfies or whatever and posting them on social media while waiting in line, especially if it's for a new ride. Again, shortsighted...

Here's why bins are a stupid idea:
1. I work GateKeeper and people move slow af putting their stuff away. It does slowdown dispatches a lot regardless of what you saw at Europa Park.
2. People would have stuff stolen more often, especially by accident because someone could grab the wrong phone on the way out.
3. People would just not put their phone into the bins when they board AKA making the whole entire thing pointless and there is no real way to tell if someone actually even put their phone in a bin.
The real solution is to just put zip pouches on the back of the seat in front of you and write on there "If you are caught removing any items from a pouch after the train dispatches you will be immediately removed from the park with no refunds."
Easiest/Cheapest solution that would work every time. You're welcome Cedar Fair. BTW they're clearly only interested in doing this to the RMC's because no other ride has or has ever had this policy.

if you do your job right, it shouldn't slow down dispatches at all. at diamondback ive seen the ride ops take bags and loose articles BEFORE the gates open, and pass them across the train to put in the bin as if there were no lockers.
Yet Diamondback still stacks every train...funny. Also with Gatekeeper most people can't figure out how to undo their seatbelt, or don't raise their harness all the way so we are busy doing that. Plus the gates open immediately when it parks.

RayDLX The bins on GateKeeper are very small. Maverick has big bins and it does not appear to me that dispatches slow down due to bins. However, I am not a ride operator, so it could be a different story from their POV.

I went a couple weeks ago, and my friends were using there phones in line, and they were caught, but just told to put it it the built in pouch.
Bins are great. I also like something that Disney sometimes does with pouches on the rides themselves. They could put zipper pouches right in front of your seat so you put your phone securely in them before you are buckled. That's probably the fastest way. But bins work well too.
And going up the lift-hill, you unzip the pouch to get out your phone so you can film the ride and plaster it all over social media so your friends back home can see it. And people are idiots.....at the end of the ride, while they are getting out on the wrong side of the coaster car, now they are forgetting their crap they put in the coaster car glovebox. hahahaha

Morey’s Piers has a walk through metal detector at the Great Nor’Easter entrance and free lockers just outside of it. You just put in your phone number as a code, and you get a free locker for 30 mins (or longer depending on the wait time). Works perfectly

In my view, one more problem with no phones in line would be: what about families? If the kids want to go on a coaster but the parents do not, I would imagine some would want updates in like, just to see if they are okay. And if they don’t want to pay for a locker, and so leave phones with non-riders, what means of communication do they have to meet up after the ride is over? Lastly, especially with Steel Vengeance, we all know that lots of people are probably gonna be excited for all the great photo opportunities in line. Like you said, the best idea is just having bins at the platform- Europa does it for bags etc., what difference does it make having a small bin for phones?

My husband and I do this all the time as he rides rides I don't. I wait for him most of the time right there were riders get off the ride. I hate this argument because it’s not really about communicating but instead it is an excuse for your dependence on the cell phone. You can live without your phone while In line and grab it at the end and then text if need be.....OR communicate a time and place to meet beforehand. We where able to do it before. Have free small lockers for phones only. Have big ones too for larger things that you have to pay for. That’s what I think they should do!

Coaster Studios They do something similar at my home park in England. It is a gurstlagter earofighter called rage. Every seat is labeled with a number (train 3, seat 8) and there are draws to put phones in and there is almost always a ride op watching it to stop people stealing it.
Could put free lockers by the rides like Hershey park has done with sky rush/ superdooper looper since you aren't allowed to bring bags into these rides lines anymore
Just Another TH-cam Account In my home park SFGA, there are storage areas/bins in ALL roller coasters to put phones, glasses, hats, etc. Yet when I visited CP I was shocked to see that they do not offer this especially when having these big coasters. Legit the best option is having bins or lockers that are locked and unlocked for each train.

Yeah Kennywood just has bins at the platform and the say something like "Please put any loose arrivals such as phones, hats, and sun glasses in the red bins located by the exit or leave them with a non-rider" and "Kennywood is not responsible for any loose arrivals stolen or that goes missing"

The problem with "I have buttoned and zippered pockets" is that this rule is really to combat people taking out their phones and recording. Something you see a decent amount at Great Adventure
I like the idea of the two-way lockers at the end of the queue since it also reduces the amount of lockers needed at a given point since only the people on the coaster plus a few extra need the lockers at a given time. It's a good sell to park as a way to reduce the cost of buying lockers.
I know this video is a non issue now, but I figured I’d weigh in since I worked SV when this policy happened. We had multiple instances of riders being hit by phones, but the rule change actually happened very suddenly when we had 1 really bad incident where a girl got hit in the eye and we started the no phone rule the very next day. The rule might have been considered before that but that was the event that caused them to pull the trigger. The issue with locker prices was that the lockers are from an outside company so CP can’t simply make them free because a portion of the money goes to that company (although from what I’ve heard they’ve finally reached some kind of deal to do so now). Bins would be pretty crap on SV, the trains are low capacity, the interval is already long compared to other coasters as is, and thanks to iROC the procedures for checking restraints is bizarre and leaves operators constantly waiting on riders and that’s without bins wasting even more time. I worked SV sometimes the following year as well when it had the pouches and just from a ride op perspective I preferred the no phone rule. Going from almost never stacking in 2018 to ALWAYS stacking in 2019 was really aggravating. As a guest though yeah having no phone in that line would be pretty garbage, I never dealt with it personally though since I could just test ride before the park opened. The biggest issue was what if someone actually had an emergency while in line? Sure we always had 2 or 3 ride ops roaming the line but still, medical situations happen on a daily basis at CP and when you dial 911 even from your cell it goes straight to CP and is way faster than an employee running to a park phone

I agree with the money grab thing. Making people pay is the real problem. We already pay through the nose to go to the park, so why make people pay for something that is allegedly for safety. Maybe they could provide bins on the platform that people can put their stuff in, I've seen it done at a couple of parks (Kennywood and Knoebels). It works fine and doesn't really slow down the loading process.
That's how it was always done in the old days. This policy is just going to make people less safe. I actually got patted down by a wannabe cop at SFGAd. Riders are just going to sneak their phones in arcane places that the guards can't touch, and more phones will be falling.
I always leave my phone in my bag, and I end up putting my bag in the cubbies at the station before getting on a ride. However, for rides where you have to pay for a locker, someone in the group either stays behind with our stuff, or we don't go on that ride.
Luckily, there's only one ride that has lockers at Canada's Wonderland, whereas the rest of them are either locked bins that are colour coded for each train, or they're cubbies when there's only one train.

It's guardian, the interactive ride in the mountain. They have a no bag policy but I don't think they worry about stuff in your pockets. It's because the station platform doesn't have room to fit everyone's bags (which is their own fault for designing the station like that) so they offset the cost to the customers instead of providing free lockers

They did. On EVERY ride. Then they removed them from the more popular attractions and replaced them with lockers that cost 1$/hr.

@@skull917 They did that at another amusement park here(Elitch Gardens in Denver, CO) then it made the news that people were leaving their bags next to the locker and were being stolen and they were forced to change it back.
Two things: 1. I believe having on ride pouches like what Magic Mountain was testing on Twisted Colossus is a good idea, that could be another solution to this problem. 2. Can we just ban together and tweet this video at someone from Cedar Fair to further get the word out? Because I think you’re on to a few things with these ideas.

Yep. We had this problem at Kings Dominion at the Twister Timbers ride. A boy with colored hair at the entrance of the line interrogated us about our phones. Being an honest person, I told him they were secured in my cargo shorts pockets and he said it was still not allowed. We refused to pay for a locker and missed out riding that rollercoaster. We already paid to ride the rollercoaster with our admission tickets. Because of that, we also refused to purchase anything else in the park- no food, no drinks, no gifts. We drove all the way from near Nashville, TN and usually buy souvenirs from parks we visit. Also, storms had moved through during the afternoon and lingering showers remained nearby but not at the park through early evening. All rides, including indoor, were shut down for hours. There had been no lightning for over 2 hours within 10 miles of the park and rides continued to be closed. The nearest T-storm was south of Richmond at that time. I went to the front gate, informed the employee I was a weatherman and I was very informed about the situation and I wanted to know what the problem was. Did we just need to leave???... because waiting around in the park doing nothing with no explanation on when anything would resume operation was a massive waste of our time since we had driven many hours. 15-minutes after my complaint, an announcement was made that the National Weather Service had informed them it was safe to open rides. Also, Volcano was closed with no explanation. Many of the employees looked like they were miserable at their jobs. A large African-American man operating the Eiffel Tower elevator vented and complained to us about how he did not want to work that day for 12 hours. His job was to sit on a stool and push the up/down button. My wife asked him why he had to work for 12 hours and he said because employees were either just not showing up to work or being fired. In another conversation, one of the workers even told us to go to Busch Gardens, because it was better, and that was where we went the next day, and yes, it was much better. Kings Dominion had 3 good re-ridable rollercoasters that we were able to enjoy, but the way that park is operated really sucks- especially for people who drive a long ways.
Kings Dominion does bins on coasters. They lock one side up when one group is on the ride and the other side is unlocked to let previous riders collect their things and oncoming riders to put in their own stuff. Which is really nice.
As European i dont get this kind of policy. In a lot of european Park there are free lockers either direct at the station or in the park itself. Which is clever, i mean why you should charge your guest Money for everything in the Park. As you mentioned it just decrease safety and happiness of your costumers.
This is a money grab. You mean to tell me that my phone wouldn't fall out on Bizarro, Superman, Green Lantern, and Nitro at SFGA, but will ONLY on El Toro, Kingda Ka, and Joker? Or only on Twisted Timbers and not Volcano, Anaconda, Intimidator 305, and Dominator? Nah... It's only on the popular rides. As someone who got a supervisor at SFGA recently to explain this, to which he agreed with this assessment, but said he didn't have the power to override it, I see it for what it is. Thing is, I always have zippered pockets, not even buttons, zippers, for this very reason.
OR what they could've done was pulled something with New Texas Giant and how they have these little cases on the ride to put your phone in it, and then the bags for the lockers.

I'm a SFGA junkie. I'm there usually 2 times or more per month. The Joker Coaster definitely should be no phones. I've lost my phone (in a button up cargo shorts pocket) and my son lost his as well (back pocket). The others...no chance. Especially Kingda Ka. Only way you're losing a phone on that ride is if you take your phone out while on the ride smh
If people knew how to keep their phones in their pockets, this wouldn't be a problem. People try to take pics and vids while riding coasters and lose their phones. That's why a dumb rule is necessary; to protect other people from the dumb things that some people do.
LevDotCom I agree. People are in fact, dumb. My problem is, the "fix" that some of these parks are doing is an obvious money grab. If it is for safety, then free lockers and I'm not bitching. Hersheypark made people put stuff in lockers on Skyrush on one of my most recent visits. No charge for it. No complaints.
This policy bummed me out so much as I'm planning my trip to Cedar Point (hopefully) next year and not being able to take some pictures from within the queue would be so sad. I do have cargo shorts with zipable pockets and just like you said in all the years of riding coasters.. never did it fall out or got destroyed / damaged. Your suggestions are straight to the point with pros and cons for both sides and I hope that they will listen and accept them or at least some variation of it.

This is way late, I recognize but I have something to add. As you know, cedar fair is big on safety, and checking every restraint every time is literally the number one priority; a train WILL not dispatch until a ride op has verified by pushing and pulling on a restraint that it is secured and locked. I've never been to Europa, but from what I've seen in videos, it looks like physically checking each restraint is not something they do, which is why they can dispatch so quickly even with bins.
Having worked a summer as a ride op at cedar point, I can assure you, bins drastically slow down dispatch. I worked maverick, one of the only major coasters to still have bins. Maverick has quite possibly the slowest dispatch of the major coasters at 75 seconds due to the two-train dispatch, and even despite that, operators still only sometimes manage to hit interval. I digress, my point being that cedar fair encourages - no, requires - that ride ops physically check every restraint, every time, and this is time consuming, but ensures rider safety.
Side note, the GP doesn't understand that rides have dispatch intervals... and usually take their time to and from the bins, so its more than just "oh, it only takes 5 seconds to put your stuff in a bin." WAY too many people don't even empty their pockets until they're *at* the bins.
Even better than bins on ride platforms, I suggest Cedar Fair take the Disney/New Texas Giant route, and place zippered pockets for loose articles in the train on the seat/zero car directly in front of passengers. This method allows for rapid dispatches (riders do not have to climb over to the opposite side of the platform to secure articles), is relatively inexpensive to implement, and allows riders to keep his or her devices with themselves throughout the queue.

IMO, Universal's system would work the best. They have free lockers, and there are metal detectors at the start of the line for all their big rides, and there is enough theming that people don't get bored. Of course, another idea would be to do what they have done with their waterpark, in conjunction with their current locker policy, which is to give park guests an electronic wristband that they can scan at a kiosk at the beginning of a ride, after which they will wait the specified time, and when the wristband says "Ride Now", they can take it to the ride entrance, and enter the line, assuming that they have placed their stuff in a free locker. That way, park guests can do other things while they wait, and they don't have to stand around in line with nothing to do, and make their feet sore from standing in place too long. Maybe there could also be a waiting area at the entrance to each major ride, where there would be benches, air conditioning, and some theming, like maybe a short 5-minute movie playing to keep park guests entertained.
You must have been there on an off day. When I went (many times and will never again), the detectors slowed everything down, lockers were very very very hard to get as most would be taken, and you had to fight like all hell to even get in there. Room for 4, but need for 50! To hell with pre-ride lockers and lets fix the damned problem! Auto lockers on platforms or zippered boxes right on the ride, you know, like the rest of the world does!

The swapping your bag for a wrist band option is the best. It should be implemented at all theme/amusement parks. It is on newer rides in Merlin parks, and I like it. Also having bins or cupboards that you can place your stuff in as you board the ride is a good idea too. CF should just make the lockers free as I would refuse to pay.
Or maybe add bins to ALL the roller coasters!
Cedar Fair is straying away from that option. It sucks, but its just how it is.

Trouble is that unlike lockers, phones and other items are more prone to be stolen than in a locker and people will complain and sue despite the liabiity policy of not being responsible. It all comes to down to liability when it comes to any major company's actions. It's not so much about what makes sense as is avoiding as much liability as possible.
Well this new phone law is like saying, "No photographers are allowed to ride!"

A gentleman lost his phone on raptor years ago when he jumped over the restricted area of fence the train killed him. Loose articles is a policy. Now at full force. Glasses keys flying out of pockets even loose change are all dangers. Being a ride attendent i found pipes sacks money jewelry. My duty was to ensure that items lost. Possible rewards, after end of season no claims. Becomes another mans trash becomes my treasure. In lost and found dept. Flying objects will never be stopped in amusement industries even if it's puke. I've been handicapped for 6 years i use a light saber cane for mobility. I also have a service dog that will guard it at the exit if he doesn't get taken as well LMAO! Guest relations is slacking even non secure deposit boxes exit side of rides.

just rode steel vengeance for the first time yesterday, and i had my phone with me. I too thought it was a ridiculous rule until i rode it for the first time. That thing never stops and is all over the place unlike something like millennium force where it is long and drug out. But i can say that is the best coaster I have ever been on, nothing else i have ridden compares to it and would gladly wait 2 hours for it again.
On the Raven at Holliday World & Splashing Safari, there are lockers on the exit platforms with keys in them. You walk up, unlock the locker, put things in, lock it, take the key is on the wrist band and put it around your wrist, then ride. When your ride is done, you go back to the same locker but you leave the key there for the next person to use.

Something I think could help with this is something SeaWorld San Diego implemented with Electric Eel. When you enter that station, they have the option to pick up a fanny pack where you can put your phone, wallet, etc. in and strap around your waist. Idk if Steel Vengeance is so wild that even the fanny packs would fly off, but it definitely works for Electric Eel.

Here's an idea: Bring a bag! Backpack, purse, whatever floats your boat and put your phone in there. Much easier spotting someone trying to take your bag than just a phone. Also handy for carrying other items such as maybe a wallet, or any souvenirs/game prizes.
here in Britain at Thorpe Park, there's baggage areas at the stations of coasters. Nemesis Inferno and Colossus has shelves at the station, and when the train you're in is dispatched the sliding grate is moved over for the riders just gone. Saw The Ride, The Swarm and Stealth have huts where staff put your bags in square shelves and give you a corresponding wristband which you give back on the exit path from the ride.
Free lockers are definitely needed. I won’t ride any ride that I have to pay extra for. And won’t even bother visiting parks that have this “must pay” policy. But those free lockers need to be in the line somewhere. Expecting people to not have their phones for hours and not be able to take photos of the rides from queue line angles is just stupid and not customer friendly at all.

Guaranteed they've thought about this loooong ago. There's not enough benefit or detriment currently to convince them to do it, or they already would be. Less people riding Steel Vengeance? That's a good thing when the wait is 2 hours. This means more people walking around buying stuff, or at least a shorter wait for their hottest attraction. If people opt to rent the locker, well, that's obviously more money for virtually no investment. You can bet those lockers paid for themselves within the first season, if not the first month.

When I was at Cedar Point someone took their phone out on the Blue Streak when they were halfway up the hill. They stopped the ride and took the phone.
I was just at great adventure yesterday and it was crazy, in the beginning of the day no one cared if we had bags we could just leave them by the exit. But as the day went on we were getting yelled at for trying to go in with bags. For example I didn’t want to ride el toro so I volunteered to hold the phones and stuff. I wanted to walk through the line and wait at the exit since I’ve done that before and this way I could still talk and hang out with my friends and they wouldn’t even let me do that it was very upsetting the way that was being treated. No workers would mention safety hazards either they would just repeatedly yell at us to go pay for a locker or we can’t ride. They really need to do the whole thing with free lockers or cubby’s. I’ve already payed to get in the park I should not have to pay again to store my things.

The problem that I have with this rule: if I branch off from my parents and they need to contact me or I need to contact them then we can’t contact each other. Also, if something happens while in line, there’s no way to contact anyone that I would need to contact.

They should do what (I think) Europa Park does with the double-sided lockers, but make an alternate exit route for those who used a locker (and free lockers/a $10 or less locker season pass)
In all the spanish theme parks i've been to there are free lockers right in the train station so you can have all your stuff in the line and once you go to ride the train you can put it in the locker located on the other side , which closes when the train starts running and only opens when it gets to the station.
Valleyfair here in Minnesota is a Cedar Fair park, and every coaster there has bins on the loading/unloading platform!
Love the idea about raising ticket prices the most, I think people are less likely to complain if they pay for it all up front no matter how expensive it is. At least you know what you're paying for, it's basically human psychology 101.

in australian theme parks although we got lockers they overcharge us more but most coaster rides have an open storage box where you put your belongings until you come off the ride normally the trains pull right up beside them where you step off the ride
This is the exact same policy that six flags great adventure has for almost every single roller coaster at this point. It is the worst. I just went to a few parks in Japan, and they had an amazing phone policy. They have metal detectors to make sure you don't bring a phone onto the roller coaster, BUT they provide free lockers. All of the keys for the lockers are attached to bracelets that they give you when you ride the roller coaster. I don't understand why parks in America haven't implemented policies like this.
Also, the lockers are located in the station, so you don't need to leave the line.

Knoebels simply lets you put your bag off to the side of the platform on most rides, including the wooden coasters. The main exceptions are Impulse and Flying Turns, which you shouldn’t have phones on for obvious reasons, and they do use bins.
As I see it, lockers should only be mandatory for rides where the loading and unloading areas are in different locations, like with Millennium Force (where unloading is in a separate building behind the loading station, as part of the way the blocks are configured to allow for three train operation) or Top Thrill Dragster (where unloading is on the curve at the turnaround).
At disneyland Paris you can ride any roller coasters with your bag inbetween your legs. I did not see any lockers in the park except the one at the front gate used for larger bags.
I agree 100%. as an avid coaster rider, i take a lot of photos in the queue, i make sure to have pants that have a button pocket and have never had an issue. I hate these policies, i understand why they have them, but it's stupid. Go back to on platform bins, it was better then.
Dorney Park in PA still uses on platform bins and they dispatch just fine. and it's a Cedar Fair Park.
I would definitely rather just have bins. As a kid who doesnt get to go to many amuesment parks at all like Cedar Point which the only park I really go to because its close, I dont want the tickets raised a penny. Since thats the biggest factor why I dont go to Amuesment parks.

I agree with many of your points on this certain situation. I personally wear shorts with zipper pockets specifically for the reason that my loose articles stay in those pockets, saving me money and time needed to get a locker. These shorts have worked on every single ride that I’ve ever been on and it has worked on RMCs like Outlaw Run and Storm Chaser. Bins on the ride platforms is definitely a simple and therefore best fix for the situation, but I guess I’ll have to get some money to put my phone in a locker since I’ll probably be at Cedar Point on August 3rd. At least my season pass will cover the rest of the cost.

Didn't know about this policy until I went up to the ride after running from the front of the park and I'm walking into the line and she sees my pocket and saw my phone and tells me to put it in the locker, so I rode the ride later after putting the phone in my friend's car, it is such an inconvienence.
Working at an amusement park, I can tell you bins on the platform do slow down dispatches, especially when you're trying to enforce absolutely no phones, and they don't work: items get stolen, people ignore them, and then you're taking more time checking at the platform for phones in pockets because people will not do it themselves... Even with bins, hundreds of disclaimers about not being liable for items lost on the ride, and quick visual checks for phones and other items in pockets as guests are getting in, there are still a bunch of phones, glasses, wallets, etc found throughout the coaster paths.

TBF many people will try and record the ride with their phone. I think the best solution is to do something similar to what Knotts Berry Farm does with Pony Express with the sliding door bins and a combination of metal detectors. It takes one ride operator 10 seconds to slide the door, no extra employees, and it's near full proof.
This video had some great points! I've stood in a 2+ hour line at steel vengeance 6 or 7 times since this rule and honestly if you are there with friends not having your phone and interacting with people in line is awesome. For people who haven't been yet, there are usually 2 or 3 employees who roam the entire line staring at your pockets. So to solve this problem for myself, I got some cycle shorts that have a pocket on them which you can't see from the outside and lets you turn your actual pockets inside out to prove you don't have your phone. You are allowed to have your bluetooth headphones in the line so if you pair those up before entering you can at least listen to some music. I just use my apple watch to change the song or scroll through the library . Watch also sends text and takes phone calls, so if you need to use your phone to communicate you're still able to do so. I don't know about the android watch but the apple watch doesn't need to be near the phone for these features since it has its own cellular connection so you can continue to pretend your phone isn't on you or actually just not have it :)
I really like your ideas! They actually have bins on the ride platforms at Canobie Lake Park and Funtown Splashtown USA.
I can sort of understand this, because when my family went to ride steel vengeance, my dad rode with his phone because he has never lost a phone on a ride, and we've ridden hundreds of rides. My dad had his phone IN A VELCROW POCKET when he lost it on steel vengeance. So I can understand the blank solution,cut they do need to make lockers free.
MagnificentBISH, cargo pockets aren't secure enough. I got through my ride on Steel Vengeance by putting my phone on my back pocket. I can't lose my phone if I'm sitting on it.
Let me start off by saying as a Coaster enthusiast like myself I Always have Zipper Pockets so my phone or Wallet doesn't fly off on the Roller Coasters.
I totally agree with you 100%! I don't always have my phone or camera with me when I ride rides because I give it to a friend who is a non rider, if I'm someplace where there's all riders then I have to take my phone and camera with me to the station and then if they have a bin to put them in that's where I put it. That's what parks have been doing in the past, I wouldn't see why it would be at problem at Cedar Point or Kings Dominion to do that. It may hold up dispatches, but shouldn't by a whole lot, if you just put it in the bin quickly and get onto the ride quickly shouldn't be much problem. I also like what you said about what they do in Europe, maybe something they could do as well.
At Universal we had free lockers and metal detectors on the outdoor rollercoasters and we still had issues with the guests who wanted to bring their phones.
Cedar Point just did what you suggested this season with the free lockers in the queue near the station. They’re very small, and they have metal detectors now.
They could just do what Disney does on coasters and have a mesh bag in front of you on the ride vehicle for loose articles. That way people with keys, glasses, etc. could keep them in line and just put them in the bag that would be within 2 feet of them while they ride.
That works fine for smaller rides, like those at Disney, but it won't work for a 200 ft, 100 mph coaster with inversions. And it only works for smaller items, which people are likely to leave in their pockets anyway.
I think the issue is people not having pockets that are secure enough for their smaller items... I don’t see why it wouldn’t work as long as the bags were properly secured with either Velcro or a zipper of some sort. Just add some padding on the back so nothing could bang against the train too hard.
Still, that doesn't stop people from trying to film on the ride, which is a big part of the "no loose articles" problem.
They already had bins in the station and got rid of them which is WHY this is a money grab. The only thing I see positive that you can get a locker all day for 10 bucks. Raising ticket prices they did that 2 years ago when the state raised their taxs. With this money grab rule they are not thinking about people with health issues. That phone is their key to keep calm in the line or someone that has OCD.
E K wife and I are flying up from Austin in 2 weeks. We always secure our phones with zipper pockets but we have Note 8s so I may not think it worth it to try to sneak them on.
Are all lockers at all locations optional in time used? If it's just $10 all day and we can get one by SV we will for sure go that route.

I plan on e-mailing them about this. More people need to complain so they offer free lockers or something.
That’s an annoying policy. I think the idea of the free lockers is good. The issue with bins is that it can’t be enforced. I think they could do a metal detector and free lockers, like Hollywood rrr and Incredible Hulk at universal. Great vid!
So much to learn from other parks. There are cubby holes right across the other side of the loading platform that one can store everything in. Grab it on your way out... Looks like I wont be visiting CP parks now. One of the reasons I will no longer use Universal. Their lockers are a nightmare! I want to use my phone while I wait!
I just got back to the US from Germany and I went to Europa park and wow I was impressed! Exactly as you said, every ride had places to put your stuff and it was organized and secure and every dispatch was 30-60 seconds.... people want to ride the ride it doesn’t take long to put stuff in a locker thing! Every ride was like this! I also went on the ride with the Lockers in the que line and was also impressed, it took 20 seconds to put everything in the locker and then get back in line and it was easy to get it all out at the end too! Catch up America
I also think about how many people go to Cedar Point every single day, and how many people are in the ques for rides like Steel Vengeance... They're gonna need a lot of lockers.

Lagoon in Utah has a similar policy, but they also provide lockers at the entrance of most rides that are free for the first two hours.
Dorney Park and Hershey Park do stuff similar to some of these ideas. Almost every roller coaster has bins located in their respective stations for you to drop bags off. And for rides like Skyrush over in Hershey, they offer lockers that are free for the first hour and then after that they're only a couple bucks. But if you plan out your ride you can typically avoid waiting over an hour unless you wanted front seat. I wish more parks would adopt these ideas though.
The parks also could sell cargo shorts in gift shops
except it wouldn't change this rule. You can't have a phone on you at all, even if its in cargo shorts.
Coaster Studios yeah, Great Adventure is my home park and it is really annoying. Now sometimes you can’t have phones on Nitro.
I think the issue isn't people who leave their phones in their pockets while riding, I think it's when people pull out their phone to take videos or pictures while they're riding. SOLUTION: Change the policy to kicking out people who pull out their phones while riding.
The phone could slip out of the pocket during airtime moments and launches.
On inverted and suspended rollercoasters like Iron Dragon and Raptor, it's less of an issue because they only have positive G-forces, but Steel Vengeance is full of ejector airtime.
At Hersheypark they have this policy too for some of the rides, however they offer lockers right next to the queue lines that are free for 2 hours which is usually plenty of time to wait on the line and go on the ride.
On rides in the uk there are almost allways storage facilities in or close to the station and there is often netting or metal meshes above pathways that come close to the ride area
