Interesting comparison of the relationships between Nikolai's mother and Pyotr's father and Nikolai and Pyotr themselves. Both Stavrogins' have their own leech though Nikolai's mother was investing in a man she was wishing to make renowned while Pyotr had similar hopes for her son except devoid of any desire that he really be great.
The novel was written almost half century before Bolshevik revolution, yet it fully predicted it, replace Russia with USA and you get today’s America in spades, chilling, Dostoevsky was a prophet.
Fantastic scene from the heart of the novel. I only wish they took another minute or so to elaborate on "shigalyovism" and the elimination of education and higher thinking, because in the revolutionaries minds education creates only despotism and hierarchy.. something Jordan Peterson elaborates wonderfully on, and something Dostoevsky truly prophesied.
They poorly cast Stavrogin. Not nearly dark nor blank enough. He wouldn't show flashes of rage with Verkhovensky, but would remain placid and indifferent. The actor playing Verkhovensky though is doing the heavy lifting here; great casting and acting.
Hi! thank you for uploading this video. Are you still working on english subtitles for this show? That would be wonderful! Thank you once again for your efforts, you're a legend
I was really surprised to learn that Dostoevsky might have deliberately hinted at Pyotr being homosexual. There was a bit of a research on it even in the Soviet era - the word itself was never mentioned, but there were other descriptions like him being "sexless", "decadent", attracted to handsome young men (Stavrogin), very fashion-concious, not having any affairs with women, his facial hair not really growing much - hinting at some hormonal problem, eccentric mannerisms, etc. Apparently, for Dostoevsky it made the character as demonic as possible, added to the rest of his behavior. Which is awfully homophobic for our age, of course, but still rather interesting.
‘The Demons’ is a book that talks about the spirits of revolution and rebellion as literal demonic entities, a parasitic growth in a state guided by orthodoxy, that resulted from people turning away from God, from morals and tradition, to the barren European illuminism that promised nothing but death. And you talk about homophobia? Do you realize how naive you sound? What do you suppose Dostoyevsky’s attitude towards gays would be if he were alive today?? No matter how hard the West tries to shame us for being allegedly backwards and close-minded for not tolerating homosexuality, we will always regard it as exactly what it is - a social virus and an abomination, and looking at America today, it’s more than enough proof that those words are true. In conclusion - don’t try to filter Dostoyevsky. His words will never fully make sense to a westerner, and that’s ok.
