Nice! These are built like a tank. Not power houses, but pretty efficient.
I know this will be a technicality to some, but it's kind of important if you want to understand the instant lighting system.
Atomization is what's happening when you open the valve 1/4 turn to light on these or put the lighting lever up on the big stoves. At this setting, the fuel pickup orifice at the bottom of the tank is almost completely blocked. Since there isn't enough fuel leaking by the mostly blocked fuel pickup, air from the top of the tank is forced down a larger tube that surrounds the fuel pickup tube at high velocity. THIS is where the atomization occurs. It's basically a tiny carburetor. It makes a fuel/air mixture that's just right for easy startup and minimal flaring up if you follow the instruction and have enough pressure in the tank. This uses a lot of air, so you will want to add more pumps either when it lights, which I prefer to do, or after it's settled down, or both. Pressure is your friend. You cannot over pressurize these with the pump. They designed head space at the bottom of the pump tube to ensure that.
Vaporization is when the fuel boils off into a gas in the hot generator. This is the goal that atomization gets us to. Some folks think of the 1/4 turn/lighting lever up setting like a choke on a lawn mower. They both get the right fuel/air mixture for starting, but you want to turn them off after it warms up.
Once it is burning clean, steady, and blue, when you open the valve on this the rest of the way, or set the lighting lever down on the big stoves, that fuel pick orifice is unblocked and the air can't make it down to mix with the fuel anymore and you stop using up tank air for atomization.
    Hope this helps somebody.

Great explanation. I had to learn this to troubleshoot lanterns which have the same mechanism. I had one that had the fuel block rod clipped and it was a fireball every time I tried to light it. No surprise. My only guess is that someone clipped it to run on kerosene which needs pre-heating anyway. The majority of the travel in the main valve is to move that rod up and down within the fuel tube. With the rod clipped and the fuel pre-heated, the lantern will run perfectly at 1/4 turn open.

I lived off of one of these for a summer back in 1976. Still have it. Works like new!

I've used one of those many times. Worked perfectly every time. I've got a couple of German made Coleman lantern look alikes that are 100% stainless steel. Indestructible and crazy bright!

502's are great. If you clean out that generator and gas tip they can really rip. When running like new, they will make the grill glow red hot.

I really like these stoves, my dad had I think a two burner stove that had to be filled and pumped up, great video 👍😁

Still my all-time favorite backpacking stove!!! Despite MSR's and Primus, even.

I have an old 2 burner coleman camp stove and a 2 mantle coleman lantern. I run premium unleaded in them. Works great and has for man years and is much cheaper than coleman fuel. I love things built to last longer than myself.

I was surprised how high Coleman fuel has gotten. A few years ago I bought a gallon and it was 7 US dollars for 1 gallon. I was out and bought another gallon prior to this video, it was almost 15 US dollars!

The new 533s don’t have a on/off large knob/valve and only have the small generator valve.. not sure I like it as much …

When there is fuel in the tank, can it spill or come out when hiking? Say when the stove is in my backpack during day hike or in canoe sideways? Do they need to stay upright or ok any which way with full fuel for a 3 day canoe trip? Thoughts?

I don't think they can spill with the valve turned off and the cap on.

I find these old liquid fuel stoves very interesting, especially if they could be modified to run in ethanol or biodiesel/SVO.

They will run on diesel if you pre-heat the generator.

Hi, I have same 502. I'm getting pressure in tank , and here air pressure releasing up through pick up tube but not getting any fuel up through it to light. Took it apart down to pick up tube but can't get it off to check pick up tube itself. Air gets through when pressurized can't understand why fuel won't. Any suggestions?? Thanks
