I mean those of us with a dark sense of humor can find this better but I can see why they took it out. It went from funny to terrifying in a sense. Made Evan the sympathy character and Bruce the villain.
And it's very ironic when you realized that Bruce already met God. So, he's not evil all because he burned his colleague's hair, he's just playing out for the laughs, which he gets what he deserve.
Pretty sure that’s why it was cut down from that darker version. It’s more plausible that god would let him get away with something if he just fumbled some words, but setting someone on fire and causing their nose to bleed profusely seems like something that definitely would have been addressed at some point in the film, assuming god didn’t revoke Bruce’s privileges.
The change/departure in tone IS what makes this deleted scene so funny. The movie was fairly lighthearted so to watch Bruce take a dark, sadistic satisfaction from giving Evan a horrible nosebleed is hysterical and out of left field by comparison to the final cut.
+steven smith I hate people too and I won't lie about wishing something horrible happen to a lot of people but even I know that had no place in a light comedy film where the main character is to be redeemed in the end.
The moment when Evan's nose is bleeding and Bruce is staring like he's using a demonic power, I think it is something that shouldn't be seen on the movie, cannot explain it
Oh he did yes, Evan did belittle Bruce occasionally, arrogantly, and looking down upon him, but the uncut punishment didn't really fit the crime, whereas the cut punishment did, I feel anyway.
I don't care if he despises him or some shit, that was a jarring tonal shift. One moment it's funny and mischievous, then it just becomes something out of a horror film. It would've spoiled the scene and ruined the mood. Also because the scene after this doesn't follow the darkness or reflects upon him getting so extreme, so again, tones all over the place.
It makes sense why this was deleted. Humiliation worked, but Bruce making Evan's nose bleed like that and setting his hair on fire would almost have made Bruce seem like the villain and Evan like the victim.
Everyone says the deleted scene was creepy, but I thought it was funny as hell. The way he screamed when his hair was on fire, just made me roflmao 🤣 🤣
2:52 had me dying with laughter all the time as a kid but it still does and it sounded like he’s laughing. With his hair caught on fire, his screaming sounds like he’s enjoying it and on 3:14 it sounds like he’s having fun with laughter 😂
From a charming and silly family comedy to a graphic and intense supernatural horror in the same scene. Just think of the contrast whilst watching the bit where Evan starts his blood curdling screams, his hair on fire and blood gushing from his nose. Wow that was funny 😂😂😂
Parts of this scene was funny like Evan screaming while his head was on fire (absurd comical) and the sportscaster trying to put the fire out in a sissy fashion. Those were comedic, it would be okay if they were never cut. The part when Evan's freaking out while his nose bleeds at an alarming rate and then cuts to Bruce's face is a bit of a disconnect and frankly takes a darker turn. Bruce doesn't come off as a jokester who's misusing God's power and comes off more of a villain.
Most people seem to be missing that I think it’s supposed to demonstrate what Bruce was doing when challenging God to fight him one on one. In a world of permanent natural disasters & war it often feels like God’s a bully with a magnifying glass pointed at us ants. God knows I have been there with Him myself.
Probably because even with exceptions like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind for instance, most people prefer him for comedy movies and hilarious characters for that matter. Ya gotta admit though, Woody Harrelson wasn’t half bad given he’s more known for playing sadistic characters (worse than Bruce in this deleted scene).
I think that would have just made the rest of the film unfunny, I mean, maybe, maybe not, I still found Jim's funny moments in the number 23 funny, but yet, this his face looking super evil as he you hear evan screaming just doesn't make the rest funny
2:55 If you thought Jim Carrey looked terrifying when making that expression, I want you to know that we were that close to getting a true sequel to Bruce Almighty called “Brucifer.” In the unmade sequel, something tragic happens to Bruce… his wife dies. So he pretty much questions everything especially his faith in God, and it would inadvertently summon Satan himself (to be played either by Morgan Freeman or Jim Carrey). He obviously wishes for his wife to be brought to lie, but she would be resurrected as a zombie (with her memories intact of course). Her look was very much inspired by Jack Goodman from An American Werewolf in London, and slowly she’d return to how she looked like when she was alive. It didn’t happen because of the massive failure of Evan Almighty.
“Perhaps a little too much wasabi in your sashimi” You could imagine any actor delivering that line and it will always sound funny. lol Tommy Lee Jones, Amanda Seyfried, Tony Cox, Cate Blanchett…
not satanic, imagine if you have God power and on one fine day you meet with your enemy/coworker/etc whom you despise so much, you will do the same thing
I can see why it was defeated because it went too far with it. This is something that belongs in a horror film. If I was taking on a similar revenge I know when to stop before I cross the line.
I mean those of us with a dark sense of humor can find this better but I can see why they took it out. It went from funny to terrifying in a sense. Made Evan the sympathy character and Bruce the villain.
Agreed. The way their rivalry had been established, it makes more sense for Bruce to want to mercilessly embarrass Evan than to torture him.
Yeah, but the very end with his hair burned off was well worth it, lol.
I agree it was too much.
Terrifying? Brother that was hilarious🤣
It's how his hair caught fire
The look of evil satisfaction on Bruce face... totally demonized.
And it's very ironic when you realized that Bruce already met God. So, he's not evil all because he burned his colleague's hair, he's just playing out for the laughs, which he gets what he deserve.
For a second I thought that said demonetized

Yes it is LMAO
The change/departure in tone IS what makes this deleted scene so funny. The movie was fairly lighthearted so to watch Bruce take a dark, sadistic satisfaction from giving Evan a horrible nosebleed is hysterical and out of left field by comparison to the final cut.
That’s what happens when the other guy gets a promotion you so desperately termed for, most people have that far to reach goal taken in so many ways
And now i really need to watch Brucifer
I could see why they deleted that. That was too much.
yes it was😈 that is what it was

+steven smith I hate people too and I won't lie about wishing something horrible happen to a lot of people but even I know that had no place in a light comedy film where the main character is to be redeemed in the end.
It was not deleted it was in the movie
I understand why because it looks something from a horror film than a comedy.
I like how Evan immediately stopped crying when his hair ignites instantly and started screaming instead lol
This is why dragon ball will always be anime and not live action,
The moment when Evan's nose is bleeding and Bruce is staring like he's using a demonic power, I think it is something that shouldn't be seen on the movie, cannot explain it
sam fisher same but god it was hilarious xD
Deffo, it was right to take that bleeding part out. What was left in the movie is funny, the part they removed was a bit creepy.
I think it really shows Bruce's pended up grudge against Evan, for whatever reason...Does Bruce have a deep grudge on Evan?
Oh he did yes, Evan did belittle Bruce occasionally, arrogantly, and looking down upon him, but the uncut punishment didn't really fit the crime, whereas the cut punishment did, I feel anyway.

He was shocked.

As hilarious as this is, what Bruce did in the final cut, was a better fit for the overall tone of the film.

Hence why they deleted the last part out.

Thanks, Roger Ebert.

I think the opposite actually. Bruce was getting payback. As far as I'm concerned Evan kinda deserved it.
