  • "Upper Class Twit of the Year" is a comedy sketch from the 1971 movie
"And Now for Something Completely Different."
It is notable for its satire on dimwitted members of the English upper class. Its title is a reference to the Horse of the Year Show because equestrianism is often regarded as an upper-class pursuit in the UK.

Monty Python was a series of factual documentaries that showcased life in England. IT’s contribution to anthropology cannot be understated. It serves as reference material even to this day, especially to those trying to get an understanding on the goings on of current England

And yet my English mother did not get it, did not understand it. She could have won British Emotional Cripple of the year, though. Not someone who should have been raising children. Father no better, but in the Men's Division where competition is very stiff.

If you look closely, you can see that even Graham Chapman himself is grinning and trying his hardest not to laugh.
How many takes must they have done of just him lying underneath the car before they all finally said "Screw it, that's good enough."
They were probably all laughing too, but then one of them had the good sense to say "Come on, we've only got this field for one day!"

Two of my favorite lines for the images they convey are in this piece.
#1: "-and his father uses him as a wastepaper basket."
You can just see him sitting at his desk looking wide-eyed at all his surroundings endlessly chewing with a bit of paper sticking out the side of his mouth.
And #2: "Oh, if only his father could understand!"
Which means somewhere up in the stands is an elderly upper-class twit, smiling, clapping and running his mouth as he looks everywhere BUT at the field. Even after his son died he's up there going "Ho ho, oh yes, jolly good, ho ho ho that's my boy down there, ho ho yes, he's a chip off the old block isn't he, oh ho yes, jolly good, ho ho ho, lovely weather, oh yes, jolly good".

How about Lower Class or No Class Twit of the Year. Lots of competition in my neighbourhood. Well, this will be amusing next time I imagine them, by way of explanation, that they are competing for that prize.

    • @sillygostly

No. This looks like native HD. Bear in mind that this is sourced from And Now For Something Completely Different, which was shot on film, and not from the television series, which was mostly shot on videotape, though the surviving film elements were used in the recent HD restoration, which was released on Blu-ray by Network.
There is a Blu-ray of And Now For Something Completely Different available, albeit only in Germany, and the film is also available in HD on other platforms (streaming, iTunes etc.). Unfortunately, the uploader ruined the footage by implementing frame interpolation, which artificially fills in nonexistent frames for a 50fps render, when the native frame rate is in fact 24fps.

    480p at best. LOL.

    • @tomscott1159
      @tomscott1159 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

In the 1970s the NTSC TV standard in the US utilized 525 horizontal scan lines, but only 480 of those lines were displayed on the screen, the rest being used for timing and other housekeeping requirements. So 480p would be the perfect means for mapping the old TV look to digital
