I agree. Mya probably had the most consistent and successful career out of all the artists you mentioned. She was successful from 1998 - 2003. I think Amerie and Teairra Mari both suffered due to lack of label support. Amerie had so much potential. I thinkTeairra's career was mishandled from the very beginning she didn't even really get a chance. She should've at least had Christina Milian/Nivea level success career wise. Keri was doing ok she could've continued but chose not to. I think it had a lot to do with the "Turnin Me On" remix drama and the backlash she received for that.
This also made me want to list the most notable hits from each artist, respectively.
      Mya
      "Case of the Ex"
      "My Love is Like...Wo"
      Amerie
"Why Don't We Fall in Love"
      "1 Thing"
      Teairra Mari
      "Make Her Feel Good"
      "No Daddy"
      Keri Hilson

@@craigjones1946 You just mentioned all of my girls. Teairra- I had so much hope for her career but even with a second shot at some lukewarm success when she had L&HH exposure and the I Can Do Better song, she just dropped the ball. I still listened to that song but I think Teairra seems to battle with alcoholism etc. that has really held her back, I ended up giving up on her.
I have so much respect for Mya, she turned her back on the industry and went independent- still making bangers- just to a smaller niche audience of her real supporters. I love that for her and you can hear how she's kept that soulful R&B element to her music.
EDIT- And you're so right, Teairra definitely had the potential to at least become the next Nivea. Christina Milians' career was more international but I don't know who was more successful in the US between the two? I'm from the UK and Chrisitina Milian was quite big for a good six years out here from 2001 (AM TO PM was top ten) to 2006- I think her last hit over here was Say I. Dip It Low was number 2. Nivea is only known here in certain Black audiences- Laundromat did chart at number 33 here apparently. I wonder if she was more successful than Christina stateside though?

I adore Amerie!! I was 5 when “Why Don’t We Fall In Love” came out, and even though I didn’t see her as much as the other girls that were out around that time (Ashanti, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, etc.), I still had a special place in my heart for Amerie. When “1 Thing” came out, I knew she was going to be big. It’s a shame to see that she was in the crossfire of what Colombia Records saw as a brighter and more successful future for them, as well as the fact that the business will not make you a priority no matter what you bring to the table.
I’m glad to see that she’s doing well, being a mom and a wife, still doing music because she enjoys it, and running a full time TH-cam channel. I actually subscribed to her channel a couple years ago and I’ve really got back into reading 😁

Critics wanted albums to be a circus back then and they wanted it to be poppy. Thatt wasnt necessary when you could have an album full of cohesive sounding songs that you could still hear the differences and made you feel all the feelings intended. It was cohesive to its title. And her issue was yt radio didn't want to play her though a few of her songs from her second album were worthy of crossover runs to pop radio especially one thing. She also kept her drama to herself and she didnt have it aired out for the public and the public back then wanted scandals and tabloid worthy drama that unfortunately made artist even more popular then...

Just goes to show in both scenarios, their labels didn't believe the song to be the right singles for them but from there the rest is history. Imagine if the labels actually promoted the songs like "1 Thing" properly and not out of obligation because the single had already been selling incredibly in numbers. I love when artists stick the middle finger up to their record labels and prove them wrong. I swear these labels and executives are their own worst enemy.

While I do agree with you, the label's judgement is based on profits, so they are banking on what will sell best. In this case, just like others, one was being groomed to be a mega-star. Resources, even if it means taking away from one or a few, to make the one being groomed to shine brighter. I've done marketing and street promo for several major and indie labels. I'm also a professional DJ with more than 40 years of experience, that includes radio, tour/show DJ, clubs, and mobile. The majors pay for things to be a sure win for them (including awards). Gambling days have been long gone. The first major project that I helped work on, the goal was several million units off the top. The execs passed down a plan for us to execute (enchantment) and the means to reach that goal. It ended up exceeding it. The projects that flopped are the ones they didn't put a lot of money on.

Picasso had a very famous quote, he said: "Art is Theft", there's a very famous book recommended to artists (I went to art school) called "Steal Like an Artist"---the point of both the quote and the book is to illustrate that being an artist is all about taking inspiration, it's about doing what the greats did but in your way and hopefully even better. It's about taking a concept and refining it, or altering it just enough to reach a bigger or just different audience. A whole team of professional artists help make a Beyonce project, the best of the best. It's not just Beyonce posted up on TH-cam with a notebook. It's a team of people who rework a concept to compete for an audience so that they can all make a living doing what they love. This is how most all media is made, every artist steals something, unless it's just a one-for-one copy and there's a legal claim to be made it's just called being a professional artist.

I love R&B music period and I loved the R&B music we had during her era so I didn’t mind that it was like other music at the time. 2. I have an affection for gogo and I LOVED that her music used so much of it in such an elevated way. 3. Never realized the impact she actually had on music for that time period. I knew that JLo song sounded just like her song but you really painted the whole picture. 4. I love me some Yonce (long time) but I’ve really been seeing into her competitiveness lately 😳 I’m not mad at it- I mean it is an extremely competitive lane and you have to play to win. But I’m learning a lot lately about how she really moves. The naked horse photo is wild.

It's interesting that you keep saying Rich Harrison created this gogo sound and then in the next breath say these other girls 'stole' Amerie' sound. How can they steal something that the creator gave them access to? Even if they had to pay for it? He chose to produce for them and he had every right to. That's deadass the job of producer. People shop around for producers cause they want their specific sound/style.
Also, if Amerie was not able to capitalize on the success from the gogo sound and couldn't do without it whereas Beyonce could use the sound for a couple of songs and still be successful outside of that sound, that speaks more on Beyonce's (or her team) capabilities and Amerie's lack thereof.

Amerie was the blue print for Beyoncé. Let’s be clear, Beyoncé was being marketed as the new Tina Turner and debuted with her solo song “Work it out” which was casted in a film soundtrack too.
It failed to reach billboard or perform any commercial success.
My theory is Beyoncé’s team seen Amerie coming up with her debut album “All I have” and quickly did an image remake for Beyoncé’s look and sound with “Crazy In love”.
Additionally, when it came to releasing “1 thing” , the same label her and Beyoncé was on was blocking the song from being released because it was “too linear” but in truth, they were trying to pass it on to JLO for her rebirth album after she heard it in the studio, forcing Amerie and her management to leak the song. Think about it, “1 thing” was in their eyes “too linear” but “Crazy In Love” wasn’t? They were in the same box.
Columbia saw that they only wanted one black girl to push like that, and seeing as how Beyoncé came off fresh from the success of Destiny’s Child, they sabotaged Amerie’s releases after her “Touch” album by stopping her music from being physical released in the US and only digital in other countries. She was blackballed and Beyoncé continued to rise.

Except All I Have doesn’t sound anything like Crazy in Love or Beyonces debut album. Work it out was for a movie soundtrack it wasn’t for meant to be the lead single for her debut album and even if it was it has way more similarities to Crazy in Love than the All I have album. All I have didn’t even really have mainstream appeal in the way that you think it did, it didn’t have major radio play or major sales. It did well for an R& B album but wasn’t getting the attention Mariah Carey, or Ashanti or Destiny’s Child was getting at the time. Rich Harrison worked with Mary J Blige first.

    • @solxgamingx
      @solxgamingx 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@SR-zv5ue Yes, Amerie didn’t have promotion from the label as well. She was basically self promoting all her work with the help of her management, and at the time where social media wasn’t a thing, it was a struggle.
But Beyoncé’s team definitely recommended the Go-go uptempo sound to Beyoncé. Amerie had this with “Need you tonight” “Got to be there” “Why don’t we fall in love” which were more prominently go-go on the album.
Yes, Harrison did work with Mary J Blige. However, it was Amerie that really helped to put his name out there for other people to work with him (Beyoncé, J-LO, Usher) as he was still relatively unknown before Amerie and was still trying to get his name out there.
Beyoncé’s team tracked down Harrison and basically used the formula and ideas he and Amerie were working on, and applied it to Beyoncé.

Amerie's first album "All I Have", is one of my favorite albums ever! It's a very smooth listen, and feels like it follows the beginning of a relationship all the way to the end. From "Why Don't We Fall in Love?, when she's suggesting they start the relationship to "All I Have", where she's saying this is all I have because I don't think it's going to work out. So many albums don't do this anymore, where the sequencing is a story. She's no belter, but she has a very sentimental tonality. They snatched my girl's sound and that JLO has ate off the black community for too long.

I see so much flack for the artists but none for the record labels, executives and producers that ultimately decide who is in/who is out and which artists gets the track. Quincy Jones once said Michael Jackson stole songs & sounds from many artists but he's still arguably the most renown and influential artists ever. How many artists careers would have been different? How many artists of great talent did we never see? The point is, nearly every artist has copied, stolen, and/or sampled/recreated from another artist (some more than others).

Thank you for this! I love Amerie. Its been said many times beyonce is a thief. 😂 but ive heard the stories of Jamie foxx being dirty, J Lo stealing music ideas too. Its what happens in the entertainment business while trying to get to the top. Its a cut throat business. I laughed when u added Amerie wanted to be naked on a horse and u posted Beyonce 😂 i admire amerie for moving on and remaining on her path. I will always be a fan of sweet Amerie

She’s humble. They all know Beyoncé and the machine stole her style and blackballed her!

I love the video, you did your homework but there was something you left out and it's very crucial to those Beyonce fans that may say you're hating. Kandi from Xscape & RHOA said some years ago that Beyonce's Dangerously in Love album they redid it when Amarie first album came out.

She was a real artist who composed and arranged her music.

We were just having this conversation again last week lol as a millennial during that time it DEFINITELY was (and not just Beyonce) But B and her label had the most eyes on Amerie.

I’ve always said Beyoncé doesn’t have a creative bone in her body. It just doesn’t come natural to her because she’s either ripping off another artists work or making a less interesting version of what the icons before her have already done. It’s coming to a point where Solange is a much better artist than her .. being more introspective, original and true to her craft
