I really enjoy watching your videos. I'm nearly 70, live alone, and can most of my meats and vegies in 1/2 pint jars. I get some really strange looks, and lots of comments, but I can't see putting my food into jars that might take me 3 days to eat. Who wants that many days of repeats? I have never tried your onion soup mix broth, BUT I"M GOING TOO! I can chicken, hamburger, roast beef or pork, turkey, most vegies and fruits. It not only keeps me in food, cheaply, but I still garden, only now in raised beds. My knees won't let me sink to ground level any more, LOL, but fresh is best IF you can grow it. It may sound odd, but I find canning relaxes me, almost as much as reading a good book does. I hope many more folks give it a try. I also hope you and your family have been staying safe in this time of trouble.
Hello. I read your reply, and it was encouraging to me. I’m 77, and have never canned meat before. Everyone thinks I’m crazy, but there is nothing like home canned fruits and veggies. I detest all the preservatives in commercial food. What type of pressure cooker do you use? Sharon in iD
My Sister.. killing it in another video! There is nothing better than watching a canner who cares about what they are canning, safety, and the beauty of the final product!🥰❤👍
I love home canned ground beef! I use Better Than Beef Bouillon broth in mine but I have added a tablespoon of the dry onion soup mix and it is wonderful! Kroger had a great sale on ground beef and I am going to but some today to can. The local small family owned grocery store had beef roasts on sale and I canned 14 pint and half jars this weekend. I am like you, I only had 3 jars of roast left so I was in panic mode! I love having that and potatoes, carrots with the onion soup mix canned , just sitting there. Open a couple jars and I have the best beef stew by only adding thicker and a spice or two and dinner is done in 15 minutes! Thanks for sharing!
One thing I have learned from watching you is that you are always going the safe route. I have seen so many canning videos on meat and just cannot can the way they do. I know you are going to be safe when it comes to feeding your family. I appreciate the way you can and I have learned so much from you in my less than 6 months of canning.
i appreciate that. I can't can meat that looks like a science experiment gone wrong. 😆 We first eat with our eyes! I put a lot of time, effort, money and love into my canning. I don't take short cuts. I really enjoy the entire process. I think that may come through in my videos. 🥰 Happy Canning!
Hamburger meat is the number one thing I can, so I will have to give your recipe a try. I accidentally made a bone broth that was too watery. So I used that to can my 25 pounds of ground meat. It turned out so good, that the next time I can ground meat, I will do it again.
I am trying this today. I used the two onion packets but added them to 1qt ham stock and a quart water since I had leftover. No added salt. Excited to see the results. Been doing a lot of canning since our freezer went kaput while we were on vacay in October. Would love to see more videos of canned meals in a jar.
Thank you for the answer to one of the comments about Onion Soup Mix keeping meat firmer. That was one of my dislikes of canning ground beef the texture. I will give this a try. Always a joy to watch your videos.
I'm watching this again for the 3rd time. I will be canning this tomorrow and want to get the recipe right. Thank you so much for all you do to teach others. My prayers are with you.
YAY I just pulled mine out, I fit 8 pint and a half jars in the AA-921 and I am stoked! I have texture issues with onion chunks so I whizzed up the soup mix in a blender and added to a little beef base and it was fabulous. Thanks a bunch for helping us! This is my first week canning :)
Those jars of ground beef look beautiful! What an easy thing to do. I have some ground beef I've been meaning to jar and now you've shown me the way. Thanks, Heather!
I would love to see a video of how you use it. I am mostly vegetarian in my diet, but I like having shelf stable meals in the pantry, especially when cooking for others. You have great videos Heather, and have inspired me to do so many new things!
I too would like to see a vid of you using it. This would be such a game changer for camping! We go for a week to 10 days and I always have to go into town for groceries about half way through for fresh meat because I don’t trust a 10 day cooler to keep it fresh that long. This would eleviate that trip!
Just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated the video. It has helped me so much to overcome my fear of canning meat. Just did my first time ever today for ground beef. It turned out supper!!!😊
Thanks so much for your videos, Heather! I'll be canning this today! Your videos are fantastic. Thank you for being so thorough. Prauers continue for you and your Family. Hugs.
Thank you so much for your way to can hamburger. I have been canning for years but never with pressure canning. Scared me half to death. Came out great. God bless you and your family. I have followed your story for some time. I couldn’t donate as I am on a fixed income. But I prayed for you and your’s. Bless you Liz OBrien
Another great video Heather! I'm going to try doing ground beef this way sometime. I have a family member that probably would grab the meat and use it easier plus the secret that would be the taste of the onion as this family member doesn't particularly care for onions but it would be in the meat as they don't mind it they just don't always want the pieces. I truly love all that you do in Canning and everything that you share you now have my 22 year old daughter who still lives at home and she is gaining wisdom from you as well. Great video friend
Thankful to have found this video as my freezer went out last night. And we have 1/2 a beef in there 🤦🏼♀️ so I’m up to my eyeballs in canning beef today 😂
I love this idea. I'm new to canning, did a bit last year. I would love a video on the different recipes you use this ground beef for. Thank you for all your efforts.
I was somehow unsubscribed from The Kneady Homesteader channel. Better check to ensure that you are still subscribed. Thank you Heather for all of your videos!🙂
I’ve gotta make this thank you . I make my own onion soup mix yeahhh lol. GODBLESS you sweetie I’m sorry for your loss . I can’t imagine.... 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I canned ground chuck raw pack. I did use it up and doctored it up, but I won’t can raw pack again. I will try your method of cooking and using onion broth to see if it will be more appetizing.
I use Beef stock when I can my ground beef. I like to pre -cook the meat like you . I think it taste better when doing that. Great video Heather.. Big hugs.
This is Mrs Pete. My family wasn’t thrilled with my canned hamburger. But I think I’m going to have to try this way. 🤪 They do all love my canned meatballs though. I now have to do them in quart jars. They work great for instant meals. Still praying for your family.
Good morning and may God bless you all… HELLLLLLP 🙋🏼♀️ I have a question and I’m hoping you all can point me in the right direction. I’m so passionate about learning to can and prep for my kids. I also want to mention that I have a glass top/induction stove top if that makes a difference at all. How do I measure temperature, timing, etc. it’s so confusing to me because most videos I watch are canning with gas stoves and the fancy pressure canning pots… Thank you, Heather, for your wonderful videos! ❤️
Yes! Please do a video on how you use the hamburger! I have issues with the texture but I prefer canning the hamburger wet vs dry. Maybe I'm putting too much water and not enough meat.
many dont like that soft texture in pressure canned burger. the onion soup mix preserves that firmness a bit more because of the Maltodextrin in it. give it a try!
You make this look so easy that at 60 (give or take a couple months) I have started procuring canning items to try making jams, jellies, chutneys and salsas this summer when all the berries become ripe. So far I obtained a water bath canning pot with rack, a bunch of quart sized jars, lid rings and lids. I'm poor so I am waiting for my next paycheck to get my funnel and lid magnet and 'pokey Joe', and some small jelly/jam jars. 2020 is a new year to try new things. If I die....it'll be all your fault for contributing to the delinquency of an old lady!! LOL Keep those videos coming.
I really like your instructional canning videos. They're amusing, concise and chock full of information! I canned about 30 lbs of beef the other day but I'm not sure they turned out as they should have. All the jars sealed up nice and tight but there's a larger than I'd like coagulated fat ring at the top. Does this mean the meat will go bad?
This video popped up when I opened TH-cam to keep myself occupied while canning ground beef, lol. I tend to season mine with taco seasoning since we use taco meat in so many things (even chili and spaghetti), but after watching your video I'll definitely be looking through the powdered soup mixes for new flavors.

Thank you for that, Heather. I know it's difficult to stay on top of these things with young children and health issues. But it's a joy nonetheless. xoxoxo from a fan in Ohio Ohhhh, yeah, I see you are using your All American 915....so, whatdoya think? I love it. It's so shiny. hahaha

@@TheKneadyHomesteader OMG!, I'm so thrilled for you, Heather. I find leaving it out and handy makes a lot of sense for me. Just a few of anything is so easy-peasy. Thanks for all you do. xoxoxo

@@TheKneadyHomesteader That's so amazing to hear! Your joy overflows to my little neck of the woods. I can hardly wait to see what else you 'cook up". Have a fabulous week ahead.
I have canned ground beef for tacos and it was pretty good but the kids complained that it needed more salt 😒. I figure you can add more seasonings later right!?!? Lol I will try this way, mine don't mind onions too much since I use them in about every recipe with ground beef or turkey 😊 thanks for another simple and good way to get a hot meal on the table fast!!👍👍👍👍
Okay Heather at your word I'm willing to give canning ground beef another try so far I have not liked canned ground beef I'm going to try this recipe thanks
I am going to try this. I live in Foothills of California and Pg&e is turning the power off regularly in the summer for fire danger. So things that I keep in the freezer need to be caned.
Just a suggestion for your future. Since you have a history of having difficulty with large/tall and/or heavy pots that you cook with or can with, something to consider would be getting another small cooktop added to your kitchen, but shorter. I know that the ADA has regulations for those who use wheelchairs to have cooktop set at 30 inches high instead of the usual 36. I am not at all saying that you will be in one, I am sure you won’t be. But having a shorter cooktop may make things easier on you since you won’t have to lift them so high. Just a thought. Take good care of yourself. Much love! 💙💙💙
This is brilliant, Heather! I love having a variety of shelf stable meats on hand so I can whip up a meal in a hurry. I've seen so many canning videos for ground beef, but none has inspired me like this one. I absolutely love this! I just canned my first round of ground beef yesterday. I also see that you have the All-American 910 pressure canner, the same one that I've got! I have a few questions that weren't answered in the video. How much water do you put in and is it typical to have some grease on the outside of the jars when it's done? Will this affect the seal?
I'm going to give this a try, didn't like canned ground beef, but I might like this. BTW if you have well water any where near West Branch, you have the best tasting water any where. I love the well water up north.
I really enjoy watching your videos. I'm nearly 70, live alone, and can most of my meats and vegies in 1/2 pint jars. I have a few questions that weren't answered in the video. How much water do you put in and is it typical to have some grease on the outside of the jars when it's done? Will this affect the seal?
I like this way better but I may have to tweek it. ❤ God Bless
I'm going to give this a try, didn't like canned ground beef, but I might like this. BTW if you have well water any where near West Branch, you have the best tasting water any where. I love the well water up north.
i am close! but closer to the great lake and i LOVE our well water. i wonder if it because of the great lake?
