Thanks, mate - yea, AI is here to stay. And in the professions that are affected (mine very much is), the choice is to to surf the wave or drown under it. I've chosen to surf to my best abilities, embrace all things AI can bring to animation, visual effects work and filmmaking in general. Here's another music video, completely different style and genre, but doing the same thing: combining AI with traditional methods. I think this may well have been one of the very first music videos for a mainstream artist that used AI when it was made (summer 2022, release was early 2023). Could i have made the TDSOTM videos with traditional tools? Sure, something a bit similar at least, in theory. But it would have taken years.

Y'know this one uses AI. But there's clearly intentionality behind how and where it's used. It's thought out and done well. If this had been among the winners I think people would probably be a lot less mad than that *_other_* "animation" winning. It's clearly not just used for the sake of it here but part of a more complex stylistic choice.

And it also doesn't even really work for the song or fit its themes all that well. And it was pretty ugly. A lot of reasons for people to already dislike it were present and then it being like 90+% done with AI and seemingly little editing after the fact to even time things to the music. Well it getting the response it did was kinda inevitable. AI is already contentious, but BAD and pretty lazy use of AI winning a competition somehow when a bunch of other people worked way harder with and without it was always gonna get a lot of people very mad.

As far as i've understood, the creator did put some considerable effort into it - hand-created 3D animation to guide the AI, trained his own model and so on. How much that all shows in the end product is another thing, and ugliness is obviously a matter of taste. As far as working hard goes, i sort of disagree with the idea that the amount of hard work should be a major deciding factor in an art competition. In my opinion, the end result is more important than how you got there...
Well, it's only half AI. Quite a lot of manual work on this one. Also, I re-did the AI part many times over before I was happy enough with it. I spent more time on this video than any other I think, maybe it shows.
Well, first of all, it was not an art contest. It was an animated music video contest. Second, art is whatever someone calls art. Six minutes of silence can be art. A toilet bowl can be art. So can AI generated video, if someone decides to call it that. Third, making these required just as much use of my skills as any other film or video production I have worked on over the last four decades in the industry. And also it took time, and plain hard work, a lot of both. Fourth, I simply would not have been able to make these videos in time using traditional methods. One video... perhaps. Ten? No way. Fifth, it was an enjoyable learning experience. I already knew how to animate by hand before starting this project, so that would not have been that interesting to me. Diving head first to the world of AI was an exciting, joyous journey of discovery. It's a rare joy to find a completely new category of techniques after working on this stuff for decades.
