This was really cool and well done. As a slash fan I chased that tone for a while but then kind of found that I like a similar tone but a bit less harsh. But like you said, things sound a lot different in a mix versus playing at home alone. Great playing for this demo! 🎸👍🏼
I’m one of the very few people to actually own this amp and you really did it justice. It’s an amazing amp I will never sell. It’s all over my key to my cage recordings. Put everything on 6 though !
Thank you for this series of videos. I really like how you take an amp and give us sound samples by switching just a few variables. We usually do not get to hear these amps (at all) or isolated and well recorded like you do here. I am looking forward to see what Zen Amplification develops in a new design. Ironically, I use your excellent sound recordings to compare to amp sim devices like Genome, TONEX, or Helix Native to help me get closer to the real thing, or to know if a sim is way off base. In any event, thank you again for these videos.
@@lordgraga I tried out a lot of combinations! MARSHALL 1960A cabs with different speakers. G12T75 from the 80s - too harsh, same with Vintage 30s! My choice is a quad of 1973 Greyback 12" Celestions in the original cabinet.
It's a one trick pony for sure, but what a trick! I wish Marshall would use the power knob on all their amps, it's amazing. I sold my AFD a few years ago to buy an old 90's Fender Tone Master that I love, but I miss that AFD sometimes. It's so juicy. I'd love to get a Silver Jubilee to scratch that itch. The jubilee seems way more versatile too.
I have a Laney GH100TI which is based off the SIR 36 mod. It kind of has the same issue - ridiculously overgained, and trying to dial it our just makes it weird. Not a gain structure which I really favour.
The reason you think this amp is too bright is because of two things: 1. You are not running the master high enough. This amp needs to be run with the master at 3:00. 2. You need to turn down your guitar volume to 7. This will roll off the brutal highs for rhythm work, then give you extra gain and cut for solos. Also, you need to run #34 mode with the gain MAXED. That is how it is intended to be run. It removes the stinging bright cap from the mix on that mode. Try these things and make another video. I guarantee you'll think this amp rules.
Great video! I love my AFD 100, so glad I bought one when they first came out all those years ago! I wouldn't mind doing a video similar to yours showcase the different speakers and how the amp changes with them. Funny enough, the modern slash sound I got through a gt75t speakers with an sm57, e935 and an e906 on the 2x12. The V30 is nice as is the Greenback but the gt75t got the apocalyptic love tone on the first video I uploaded ( Halo ft Slash) th-cam.com/video/vUs1V3NhKnM/w-d-xo.html
Small error - comment at 00:02:15 should say 00:05:30...

It really depends on the speaker. Love my AFD 100 - it needs the right cab and the Master wide open 😉🤘🏻🎸☮️
Great video as always!
What cab/speaker do you use then?

Yea smarty pants!! What cab/speaker do you use?? lol
Thanks for the demo! I love mine, managed to get one during the pandemic, I think I will never let go of this beast!
I have this amp…one trick pony for sure, but damn do I love it! Captures AFD tone like a boss

These videos are great. It would be cool if you tried a Laney La100sm or La100bl. An Orange Matamp or Or80 is also great
killer amp
Some complain about it being too dark, wonder if there might be some faults with early releases?

Sounded a bit cocked wah-ish. Might have tried some Michael Schenker.
We need Marshall to re-issue these AFD's in a 20watt version.
Fuck yeh. I have the 100watt version. It’s my best amp
I also have the Joe satriani jvm. They should reissue that at 20 watt too
@@truthfactreality6814 awesome! I think Marshall is missing a big opportunity by not doing an AFD 20 watt.

Also of course when you’re in a band mix that tone is gonna absolutely savage through the mix.
Ice pick right in my ear hole. Brutal. I was never one for afd tones.
