In the case of ellen and portia it might be expensive, yes.
First, they are lesbians, so they need to buy the sperm. Then, if we suppose that portia is the one who would be carrying that baby in her womb (ellen obviously cant for and age matter, plus she is the male in the relationship), she has to make sure her eggs are ok (she is not that young either). If yes, she has to undergo an insemination process, that costs money too. If not, they also have to buy the egg and make an ivf, which costs even more.
In case portias eggs are fine but she doesnt want to be pregnant, they might also want to hire a surrogate. Even more money. And so on and so forth.
