    This saved my aging sony vaio. It would turn off after 10 seconds or so. I assumed it was the charger, then the battery thinking it just wouldn't take a charge. I couldn't get far enough into the boot to see the battery really did have power. I started to google replace battery, and found this. Turns out my fan wasn't even turning on, so the cpu would shut down to keep from melting. Thanks for the detailed video. I went ahead and replaced the battery just to get longer life while I was at it.

    Hi Larry! Thank you very much for this video!! I have just performed this "surgery", first time opening and replacing a laptop component and it all worked perfectly. To other users, beginners like myself... just be careful and see where the arm sliding under the power cable goes when removing and in any case you can lift the power connector, insert a very thin wedge under the metal plaque to lift it and then insert the arm a little more comfortably. Just rookie resources but this is a great video and it recovered this beautiful and efficient Sony for normal use :) Thanks again!

    Thanks for the video and especially for the fan number which was a time saver. If someone else is facing with the same issue. be sure to measure that the replacement unit wires are correct length. I had to ask help in order to get one of the old wires to be soldered to the replacement unit because the wire it came with was 1 cm too short and the task is somewhat delicate.

    My 3rd fan! I bought this PC new in July of 2013 and had to replace the original fan due to noise in Nov 2014, so it lasted less than 1.5 years. I replaced it with a Panasonic fan & heatsink (not sure who manufactured the original fan), it cost ~$65 on Ebay. Now the fan has become noisy again after 2 years and ~9 months. Just bought a Delta fan and installed it. However, this time I did NOT replace the heatsink and only bought the fan for $12 on Ebay. It was EASY to replace as others have commented here. It separates from the heatsink with a few screws and that's it. Larry...

      I myself am on my second SSD.
      Not soon after the fan replacement (which is still working though), the laptop started to have sudden disk IO spikes that jammed eventually the Windows 8.1 if I didn't stop using the computer for a while.
      I tried to find the culprit for performance monitor showing 100% disk activity while none of the processes were showing up in the resource monitor. After couple of months or so the computer could not stay on for more than couple of minutes without freezing and it was time for SSD change.
      I replaced the original made by Samsung one around 50€ made by Kingston. With the new one the same disk IO spikes were back but this time the culprit did show up in the process list. I had my suspicions on the VAIO Care product family and indeed it was a process belonging to VAIO Telemetry. By removing it (www.advanceduninstaller.com/VAIO-Telemetry-f2362ea0d3226e17b04ac8e3d4f52c3c-application.htm) the disk IO spikes were gone and I'm soon past one month without problems.

      Hi, do you perhaps have the part no for the fan alone?

  • @dfernand101
    @dfernand101 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Many thanks for this kind sir, I was nervous about opening the laptop but I fixed the problem without replacing the fan (although for the future I ordered a fan as it seems to be the weakest link in this excellent laptop). Just as background I got my Sony Vaio Pro 13 around March 2014, it was the later version which didn't have the WiFi problem and I've never had any problems with fan noise or overheating until 2 days ago where the laptop launched into fan full speed with prolonged overheating on the underside and also with awful helicopter type buzzing noise which made the laptop almost unusable as this was a terrible distraction to others and myself. The noise would commence after starting the machine for 1 minute and then launching any application such as Skype or TH-cam. I suspect that the problem was that the oil lubrication on the spindle of the fan had totally evaporated and the ball bearings were grinding, I typically used my laptop every day for an average of 2 hours and then left it on all night playing podcasts which I listened to (subconsciously mostly) for hours - this has been the pattern of usage for 11 or so months.
    So the steps I followed to fix the fan noise problem for my Sony Vaio Pro 13 were as follows:
    1) open the laptop as described in the video above being careful to not force anything as the plastic could snap, using one of those plastic levers used to open tablets is useful to have for this.
    2) you will see the troublesome fan, focus on the fan and not the copper heat sink and without removing the fan (don't remove the fan for my fix) you will notice that it has a black circular sticker attached to the main spindle, the sticker has a center circle cut out at the middle with a small silver/white spindle dead center of the black sticker cut out hole (it's around 5mm in diameter). Now I removed the sticker taking care not to damage it but looking back I suspect this may be UNNECESSARY. Then I doused a COTTON SWAB with oil lubricant (I used U.K. WD-40(tm) although again I'm not sure if that was the ideal chemical to use), so you can use an oil soaked cotton swab or say instead a kitchen towel twisted to form a fine tip with oil on the end. REMEMBER you want the cotton swab to be wet with oil but not DRIPPING as it may drip the lubricating oil onto other components and you don't want that as damage may occur due to this.
    3) With the cotton swab wet with lubricating oil simply gently circle the silver spindle in the middle of the black sticker ensuring that a modicum of oil enters the spindle. REMEMBER we don't want to saturate the spindle with OIL just a small SMEAR will do.
    I smeared light amounts of lubricating oil under the sticker area but I think that is not needed. Also if you DID decide to remove the sticker remember that there are copper coils beneath the sticker now exposed, there is no need to oil those so don't do it ! If you did decide to remove the sticker put it back exactly as you found it, I used a small about of Pritt Stick(tm) to do this and it worked fine - make sure it is secure though you don't want that sticker peeling off and falling onto the components whilst your machine is on.
    4) re-attach the underside of the Sony Vaio Pro 13 carefully as shown in the video above being mindful that the side with the ports USB/audio jack should be tackled first as this is like the main hinge (of the oyster clam!). The audio jack is notoriously difficult to slot into place but as a useful tip, simply plug in your head phones into the audio jack on your Vaio Pro 13 and then GENTLY pull down on the plugged in audio connector to slot it back into place. Then replace the screws and the rubber 'feet' of the laptop as stated in the video and VOILA !!! you have a (FAN) SILENT AND COOL SONY VAIO PRO 13, mine has been playing 4K TH-cam videos for 5 hours straight and the fan is silent, you can't hear a thing.
    Side Notes: To be honest I was surprised at the results, it's almost as if the controller for the fan doesn't start if it detects resistance due to lack of lubricant on the spindle for the Panasonic fan and then doesn't kick in until it's panic time and the CPU is at 65 to 70 degrees Celsius and then the fan is like a buzz saw / helicopter rotary blade on full steam ahead with the underside of the laptop uncomfortably hot. I'm glad this fixed it as I didn't want to make modifications to any driver configs (there are tools to do this) or go on a hunt for a troublesome app that was causing this or do a factory reset to see if it was a software problem. If your Sony Vaio Pro 13 is still under warranty and you have time then I recommend that you return it to Sony instead of following my instructions or if you are worried about taking damaging your laptop, call up Sony and ask how much it would cost to repair your unit - I'm not sure if they still do fixes for out of warranty laptops though as they sold their Vaio business last year...

      ***** I will inform you how long my maintenance tip with the oil on the spindle lasts, if it starts grinding and spinning fast again and heating up as soon as I power on like last time then I'll post a comment on here, if not then I will remain silent. at the moment I'm typing away on the Vaio Pro 13, it's been on 1 hour+ and you can hear nothing so all good up to now. Like I mentioned in my comment I actually did order a backup fan as it is the weakest link with it's moving parts and I may well need it in the future so all your advice in the video is useful - I want this laptop to last as it was expensive.

      David Boris Fernandez Hey guys thanks heaps for all the helpful info. What is your battery health like on the vaio pro now? im looking at purchasing a second hand one and hoping to find out what to expect, also do you know if the battery is replaceable and if a 256gb SDXC card works in it? Thanks in advance for any insight!

    • @LarryBlackledge
      @LarryBlackledge  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Javs Cuz Javs, I have not tried to replace the battery, but it appears replaceable. I bought this PC in July 2013, thus 2.5+years and battery now lasts ~50% of the new time, so ~3.5 hours max now or less. Have not tried a 256Gb SD card, but I use a 128 Gb and that works fine.

    • @dfernand101

      ***** Ok the 'fix' with the WD-40 oil lasted for about a month with less than usual laptop usage (about 1-2 hours daily); I promptly got the buzz-saw sound and the laptop got very hot. Maybe I didn't apply enough oil last time (as it initially seemed to work fine which resulted in a quiet fan). So I decided to install the new fan (cleaning away old thermal paste with a cotton bud/alcohol and apply new thermal paste also) and it worked... I got a real quiet fan and the laptop isn't as noisy. One thing though ... I got the 'new' fan from ebay and it seemed to have thermal paste residue on the 'end' with the 3 screws, also the exhaust vent seemed to have a few bent grills / metal fins so I don't know how 'new' this new fan really is or whether it was plucked from a faulty Vaio Pro 13 or not ... I'll keep you posted.
      Also there is the 'other problem' which Vaio Pro 13's have and that is that the buttons on the track pad sometimes get 'stuck', this with my bad luck happened to me and it was very annoying... there is a 'fix' of sorts and I performed it and the track pad buttons don't get occasionally stuck any more ... here is my fix...
      ***************************************
      My left click(s) on the Sony Vaio Pro 13 were occasionally sticking which was annoying ..... so I did the "tissue between the clicker and the base of the case and it works fine .... I get a decent 'click' noise on both left and right click buttons of the track pad and neither stick down any more... ( which prevented further user clicks).
      Here are some photos of what I did .. I used a single sheet of lavatory paper !!! and just folded it and stuck it down with black cellotape...

    My fan has started buzzing to the point that the entire laptop shakes and the thing is unusable. Sony won't repair it and Best Buy can't get parts (this has been an ordeal), so finding your video has been great.

    Hi Larry,
    Thanks for sharing the video.
    I have a sony SVP132A1CL...
    Years ago, when i had the trouble about fan noise, my laptop was in guarantee period, so i've sent it to sony, then they do something and the noise disappear after.
    Then, 3 months ago, the noise re-appear only when i launch something on (for ex, a video on TH-cam).
    I'm afraid of replacing the cooling fan with / without heatsink will change nothing, after the replacement the noise will appear again...
    What do you think about it?

    Thanks very much for this video. It would have been better higher resolution as it's difficult to tell what is going on with the wire you need to use tweezers on, but I suppose I will cross that bridge when I get to it. I got a Vaio Pro 13 when they first came out (at the time it was the only Haswell ultrabook on the market, and I didn't want to wait for the Haswell Asus Zenbook) and overall I've been very happy with it. However, over the past month or so it has been experiencing thermal shutdowns. The fan still works OK, but its still overheating. From my online research it looks like the thermal paste used is not very good, and it helps greatly if you replace it with good quality silver paste, so that is on my to-do list. I imagine there might be some dust in there too that needs cleaned out. Videos like yours are a terrific resource to, if nothing else, build confidence before cracking difficult devices like this open. Luckily this one looks as easy as most cell phones to open! Thanks again!

    Hi Larry, I replaced the original fan with a brand new Delta fan (thanks for your tutorial) and renewed the heat paste. Now the fan noise is just as loud as before, just without the clattering. The fan is always on max speed when there is updates installing, in idle I can still hear it very clearly. What else could be wrong? Maybe the temperature sensors?

  • @shoobiefu
    @shoobiefu 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    ***** Thanks for the reply Larry. I had a look through the Intel page and nothing stood out. though I booted up Furmark to push the graphics to the limit and watch them closely to see what happens. As you said, it hit 105 and shut down, and would not power on for 10 seconds. However, it's important to note that there laptop wasn't particularly hot, nor was the fan spinning very fast, and the air blowing was only warm.
    One thing that stands out at this point is the temperature diode location inside the chassis, which might be giving faulty readings. Do you know where inside the chassis the diode is? Maybe it moved whilst I was replacing the fan, and could be giving faulty readings. Could I simply disconnect the diode?

      Sad thing is that there is no fan BIOS setting, people have looked into this deeply trying to hack the BIOS to create fan control and all to no avail. VAIO Care released an update to their software over a year ago where it allowed you to set the FAN to 'Quiet Mode' which did little to nothing to fix the fan noise. You just have to buy a new fan each time for around 10 euros with some thermal paste if you feel up to adding some new and removing the old with alcohol on the CPU.

    I fixed a very loud grinding sort of buzz by removing the heat sink and fan, pulling out the black part of the fan with the blades from the fan's chassis, cleaning it as well as the hole it fits into with earbuds and toothpicks. Then oiling everywhere where the fan blade part comes into contact with the fan chassis. Then it's simply a matter of putting it all back together and for me the buzzing was gone. In an ideal world, one should clean and reapply the thermal paste...

    Thanks for all the useful info. So I replaced just the fan last week. After further troubleshooting I believe it is shutting down because of overheating. I took it apart again and cleaned the old and put new thermo paste on bit to no avail. I noticed the fan wasn't running at high speed and discovered the thermo sensor which regulates the fan speed is on the far end of the heat sink. I moved it closer to the cpu (basically runs almost all the time (as a test)). I watched the temp with a utility I downloaded and it shuts down consistently around w a cpu temp of 94c. CPU feels pretty hot too. Any advice or do I have an nice black boat anchor!? Thanks again for your contributions!

      +Larry Blackledge... It was working fine except the fact that the fan bearings went out. It was so noisy i replaced it (the fan). Takes about 5 - 10 mins depending on how much I tax the cpu. I was thinking we should replace the fan and the heatsink?

    • @LarryBlackledge
      @LarryBlackledge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steven W So when you replaced the fan, you did not by the FAN+HEATSINK set you bought only the fan and then reattached to the old heatsink? I have not examined the connection between the fan and heatsink, how are they connected? Can you feel hot air blowing through the heatsink fins? The heatsink itself doesn't age, just make sure the attachment to the CPU is clean and has plenty of thermal paste and be sure the cooling fins are clear.

    • @nutyprof
      @nutyprof 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Larry Blackledge You are correct. Replaced just the fan. Warm air exhausting thru the fan area - not a ton. Noticed that as the cpu heats up the heatsink doesn't seem to carry a ton of heat thru it towards the other end near the fan. ( the cpu is very hot but the heatsink isn't so much). I thought maybe the themal compound wasn't doing its job correctly so I removed and reapplied but not much diff. Used IC Diamond type thermal compound. The fins on the heatsink assembly got slightly bent during removal - straightened them out - how critical is this piece of the puzzle? Thanks again...

    • @LarryBlackledge
      @LarryBlackledge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Steven W If the fins are now straight, I'd say that piece is OK. Can you give us a feeling of how hot (not necessarily by temp, but by touch) the heatsink is near the CPU vs. how hot the heatsink is nearer to the fins/fan? i.e. is the heatsink really sinking heat? Be sure to feel both pieces of copper tube as one could have been cracked causing the lack of thermal transfer.

    • @LarryBlackledge
      @LarryBlackledge  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Bruggeman Good question, I had never looked into this, but after doing a quick review it appears you can replace only the touchscreen & digitizer. There are companies selling them for ~$75-$100, however I have NO experience with those companies nor the process for replacing it. Ex. www.etradesupply.com/sony-vaio-pro-13-digitizer-touch-screen-v1-0-version-black-with-sony-logo.html
      I suggest you look into the mechanics of the replacement process before attempting this, feels like it may be difficult, but I do not know. May be easier to replace the whole LCD screen & digitizer. Let us know how it goes.

There may be a wire in the fan or the fan body may be twisted causing the grinding. If the fan is moving slow due to the grinding noise, it will not cool the PC and it will get hot. Keep us posted. I reviewed that when I bought it and decided to get the whole heatsink/fan unit. It appears they are molded together and likely have some thermal compound between them. Hi Larry. Firstly thanks for sharing this video, it helped me immensely when replacing my fan.
    I'm a little curious though, once I replaced it and booted back in, my temperatures weren't very stable. They fluctuated between 50 and 90 constantly. Now after an hour they're a little more stable, however when I booted into a game the temp climbed up to 90. I don't want to stress it too much I so don't plan on putting anymore load on the system until I know what's going on.
    Should I be worried about these temps? Should I open it back up and check to make sure everything is seated properly? I used Arctic Silver 5 for thermal paste and I used it quite liberally on the HSF... what do you suggest?

If you want to do this open the VAIO Control Center application, go to the "Power & Battery" tab, then look for the "CPU and FAN" section and move the selection to SILENCE. Obviously i need to remove the back cover, which with your help (fan video) i now know how to do, but how much more do i need to disconnect before i can put a new digitizer back. The digitizer is plain rectangular, but has a little lip at the bottom which obviously needs to attach somewhere inside the computer for the thing to respond to touch instructions, but as i say i don't know how bare the thing has to be stripped in order to do that. fabiaiz10 Fabiaiz, my fan started making noise, like a whine and growling. This went on for ~4 months and was getting worse, then I changed the fan. If your fan was clicking and now stopped, I would suggest getting a can of high-pressure air and put the can's tube in the fan vent near the power connector and try to blow the fan. You may find some object has gotten into the fan, try to blow it out. When I used a can of air on my fan to clean it, I can hear the fan spinning with the air.

I have the same model of laptop (2 years old) and I think mine has the overheating problem with the fan and showing blue screen after I turn on the laptop for around 2 minutes...( the bottom is pretty hot too) do you think it's the fan and overheating cause the blue screen? (Kernel error, and also critical process died).... Also the fan is really noisy after I logged into my account and I didn't even open any programs (like browser).. +Kwan K Kwan, I normally clean my PC's every ~3 months with high-pressure air. You can try that, but if you do not see a lot of dust come out when you blow it, that may not be your problem. You mentioned the fan was loud, is it just running fast or is it making bad noises? Can you feel hot air coming from the vent on the left side near the power connector?

    • @rilakkuma3th
      @rilakkuma3th 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Larry Blackledge hi Larry" thanks for your reply first! Should I remove the bottom in order to clean the fan using high pressure air? Yes I can definitely feel hot air coming from the vent on the left side!! there was once that the bottom of my laptop almost burning my hand! Like super hot. Maybe it's just running fast....I don't think it's making bad noises..... Thanks!

    • @LarryBlackledge
      @LarryBlackledge  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kwan K Kwan, the fan can be cleaned with high-pressure air without removing any parts. On the left side near the power connector there is a vent (where you feel the hot air). Aim the high-pressure air into the vent to clean it. When you spray the air you should hear the fan spin as the air hits it. If this doesn't fix your problem, then I suggest running Sony's PC diagnostic program that came with your PC (actually, you can run it anytime, no need to wait). You may want to adjust your power settings to Power Saver mode so the CPU is not overheating so quickly, until you get the problem fixed. If none of this works, remove the bottom of the PC and verify the fan is running OK and air is moving OK. Then check the copper arrow end of the heat-sink and be sure it is firmly seated against the processor. Let us know how it goes.

      +bencelot Great question, and the same one I am asking now as my keyboard continues to lose the "E" key and I continue to doctor it back in place. I'm still studying this, however my findings so far are a very few brave souls who did take the PC completely apart and drilled out the rivets in the keyboard and replaced it via epoxying it back in place. Now, if you buy the keyboard with the palmrest & trackpad attached, it becomes much easier, but more expensive. So far I can find the keyboards on ebay for ~$35 USD and I can find the larger assembly with keyboard-palmrest-trackpad for ~$75, however the latter is used and I really want a new one. Thus, if I do get to a solution on this, I will certainly post it.

      Bernardo Bohorquez Bernardo, I'm not 100% sure, but can tell you two places to look. In the BIOS there may be a fan setting silent or performance. I believe there is also a fan setting in your Power Profile in Win8, it allows setting for silent. If neither of these work, the temperature sensor in the PC may be telling the fan to turn on when not needed.

    • @assulthunter
      @assulthunter 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Thanks for the response. That was what I had already done once turning it on and the fan kept at it at full roar. At what temperature does the fan normally turn on? At start-up my CPU sits at 31-33 and maximum is 45-48.

    • @LarryBlackledge
      @LarryBlackledge  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bernardo Bohorquez I do not know the turn-on temp, however the temperatures you quoted are very low, I do not believe the fan should be running very fast at those temps.

    I want to report my experience because it could be useful for someone with my same problem. I've had for more than 1 year battery problems, my vaio was randomly shutting off, while it was on the table or while i was transporting it. Also my screen when battery was under 40% started flashing. I've tried replacing the battery but this had not fixed my problem. Some months ago my fan started being noisy so i ordered a new one and replaced it. Since i've replaced the fan, every battery problem and screen flashing disappeared. Now after many years of problems my vaio is like new. I think that the fan was defective and was consuming to much energy causing all my problems.

    • @LarryBlackledge
      @LarryBlackledge  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +ExBriaN77 ExBriaN77, The source of the noise is the fan motor/bearing wear. i.e. the fan's unbalanced rotation is causing the noise. Thus, I do not believe the thermal paste will help with the noise. I have not upgraded my SSD, and frankly I didn't look at the interface closely when I had the Vaio case open. However this video claims it's a Samsung PCIe SSD, which is different than the SATA SSD. th-cam.com/video/jNRdNizgBeo/w-d-xo.html
      Note you can find this SSD for sale, like here: www.amazon.com/Samsung-XP941-512GB-AHCI-80mm/dp/B00JOSM3TK/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1458144839&sr=1-6&keywords=vaio+ssd+pcie
      However, I suggest you buy the SSD from a place that allows you to return it as this info may not be correct. Also, Sony only shipped this with 256GB maximum, so the BIOS may not allow an SSD larger than this. Another option is find a used 256GB from a Vaio on ebay or ??? and try that.

      Hi Larry, I replaced the original fan with a brand new Delta fan (thanks for your tutorial) and renewed the heat paste. Now the fan noise is just as loud as before, just without the clattering. update: at lower speeds, even the clattering is back. It doesn't seem to be a fan issue. Maybe it has to do with the temperature sensor. One issue I identified is "Microsoft IME", which is necessary for Chinese input, it occupies around 33 % CPU, but seems to be a known Microsoft issue and hasn''t been fixed for more than one month. Another issue is, when logging out (win+L) and leaving the vaio pro, the fan goes crazy and keeps rotating and max. speed until I login again. Thanks for your help!

    • @LarryBlackledge
      @LarryBlackledge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      TG, thanks for re-posting your message. Wow! Odd about IME, I use it regularly and have not had high-usage CPU issues, you may try uninstalling and reinstalling it. Regarding your other comments there may be a temperature control issue as you mentioned as it is odd that once you lock the computer the fan usage goes up. I believe the VAIO diagnostics has a fan test that you may run, this should check the temp sensors as well. This may be a downloadable utility vs. natively installed. If the fan is truly clattering, you may try running it while the bottom of the case is off and you can see if the fins are hitting something or wobbling. Am curious if you are using the old heatsink with a new fan or did you buy a whole fan + heatsink module? Let us know. Larry...

      Hi, thanks for your reply. I think the windows modules installer worker is responsible for the regular high cpu usage. But it is too often to be just for updates so I don't know what is wrong here. For the IME that is a known issue since the update on 09-29 for many user, Microsoft knows but doesn't fix it. I bought the fan without heat sink since it is 1/3 of the price and I couldn't imagine any wear on the heat-sink itself.

However, since then I've had multiple readers tell us that buying the fan alone and attaching it to the original heatsink is easy. Thus, if I were replacing my fan today, I would order one like this:
      Panasonic: www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Sony-Vaio-Pro-13-SVP132-SVP132A-SVP13218-SVP13217-Cooling-Fan-UDQFVSR01DF0-/281806591112?hash=item419cfb5488:g:WCQAAOSwEetWAKUL
      or if someone wants Delta:
      www.ebay.com/itm/CPU-Cooling-Fan-for-Sony-Vaio-Pro13-SVP132-SVP132A-300-0001-2755-UDQFVSR01DF0-/371405107574
      When I buy on ebay, I look for a seller with thousands of sales and a rating of 99%+, both of the above dealers qualify. Doesn't mean their products are 100%, but if there is trouble they will work to get the issue resolved.
      Good luck and let us know how it goes!
      Larry...

    Brody, can't seem to REPLY to your post, so I'll post here. I've not been measuring my processor temp, so probably can only give you limited answer. Intel publishes comments on processor temps, worth a read: www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-033342.htm I believe your processor will shut down for safety reason at 105C+. On the page above if you read each of the bullets, you'll find an Intel utility to check your processor for any issues, including temp. If you greased the fan well as you've indicated and it's bolted snugly, and the fan is blowing warm air, you've done the install correctly. Gaming is one of the most stressful exercises for a processor, thus higher temp can be expected. If you find any goodies while looking over the Intel page, let us know.
