    Thanks.. I ended up crushing all the pods in the end & doing it very similar to her :) Got about ½ the saved amount again from the leftovers on the plant.. Most have been shared around with the give away winners & a seeds sharing group over here :)
    Hope all are well & have a great one,

    Not bad for just one plant... Got about ½ that amount again with what was left on the plant.. Only just planted out first Rukola/rocket here this year so will be interesting to see how it goes.. Will see how your method goes hen it comes time to save the seeds..
    Cheers Jay & have a great one :)

    Got about ½ that again Dale when I finished off the rest of the plant.. Probably have saved ourselves a fair amount saving our own seeds... Then again, I am a bit of a seed addict & have bought a fair amount that have never seen the soil as well :/
    All the best...

    Have never tried to grow one from seed sorry.. Had a bit of a look around & it looks like the rough seed needs to be cracked then the kernel inside the seed is taken out.. Most people recommend planting the kernel into a small pot then refrigerating it.. The kernel needs a prolonged period of time to be able to shoot.. When I did a search there are a few pages that come up that say fairly much well the same thing..
    Hope that helps a bit & you get to grow one from seed :)
    All the best,
    Rob..

    Due to "inbreeding depression" it's a good idea to add in some seeds from another source every few years just too keep your new plants healthy.. This is something I have only just started to learn about over the past few months..
    Hope you get to save loads of seed..
    Cheers & have a great one..

    Good stuff Rob keep em coming. Our gardening is over for this year well growing that is. Had side ways rain most of the day not nice. Had a squash 2 kilo something over 4 pounds. Very nice roasted and good soup. The boss is working on something new for it tonight. At 5 franks a kilo I will be growing it again. I think we have another 8 or 9 on the vine. And yep I am saving seeds from them.

    I read that some people use mini mesh "houses" filled with purpose bread flies to help pollinate certain varieties at a time to stop crossing of varieties David..Apparently it works fairly well for other plants like carrots as well :)

    Hi there.. Sounds like you get much the same weather as us..
    I store our seeds in clip seal bags inside a tin that's kept in a cool spot in the house.. Gets very humid here so I think that the plastic bags are best..
    Could store them in the fridge but just don't have enough room :/
    Hope that helps a bit..

    Hello Rob.
    You have been saving seed for a while, I would like to know how you store yours? I have not been doing it long, Less then one year with Okay results.
    As far as weather I think we are similar heat humidity and mild winter no snow lucky to get a frost. 27* North If I remember from sailing. I am saving in refrigerator. Just wondering,

    This is probably a stupid question, but I'm wanting to know about part of the process that I can't find the answer to. Most of our blossoms are gone and have turned to pods. They're still pretty green pods. Do I keep watering? At what point can I cut them down and hang them to dry? I'm tired of watering them daily!

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JudkinsJourney Hi there & great question. I think that you'll find you can ease back a bit on the water as they are not really in an active growth period once the flowers have finished. I would water them every 2nd or 3rd day until enough pods have turned brown for you to gather all the seeds required to meet your needs.
      Hope that helps some.
      Good luck with the seed harvest : )
      Rob/.

    • @JJourney1
      @JJourney1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We're doing container gardening, so we have been watering every day, you still maybe every other day? (Thanks for the reply by the way!)

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      JudkinsJourney Every other should be OK as long at the pot is large enough. If the pot has holes in the base you could sit the pot in a tray & let the water wick up. Don't know if that helps any.

    Just one plant is. Ok for self polination and get seeds ?

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One plant is OK if you're doing it only once. You will need to get other genetics in there by having a few flower at once or you could get some inbreeding depression set in & give you mutated plants down the line.
      Hope that helps some.

  • @RobsAquaponics
    @RobsAquaponics  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    We have grown broccoli from saved seeds before & they went fine.. Not to good to re save the same brassica seed over & over as the genetics become a bit dodgy.. It is a good idea to introduce new genetics into the mix every second year from what I have been told.. If you search for "Inbreeding Depression" you will find more information on the subject.. Hope that helps..

    Howdy there rob sir. Just asking when collecting the seeds, would the pods dry up whilst still on the plant before collecting the seeds? Just that I am near the end of the cycle of broccolis that I am currently growing and is the first time that I will be collecting the seeds of them and am curious if I should allow them to be dried out or continue watering as some are still producing some broccoli or some of them off and wait till they dry out

      Hi Phillip & sorry for missing your post mate.
      I find that the plant will keep producing more flowers even though there are some pods in various stages of drying out. I keep watering the plants so the bees & other beneficial insects have for forage flowers. I like the pods to dry out a bit on the plant before taking them off.
      Hope that helps you out some & you got to save some seeds mate.
      Cheers.

    • @phillipsoutergardens4818
      @phillipsoutergardens4818 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thanks for that rob, I had done that where I continued to water and leave the pods onto the plant until they dried a bit, then cut them off, the pods didn't open but I was able to break them up and take out the seeds, I have gained 10s of thousands off seeds from I think it was 9 plants I grew.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You just leave a head on & let the flowers form with brassicas. With cauliflower, you can take most of the head off & leave a few florets & let them go to flower.
