There's a song near the beginning called "If You Were Gay" where a character called Nicky sings to Rod about how if he was gay, he would still accept him (because he was getting defensive after Nicky mentioned about how he met a gay guy on the subway). Fast forward a little, and we have a song called "Fantasies Come True". In this Rod hears Nicky talking in his sleep. It seems to just be a weird dream, but then Nicky says "I love you, Rod.", and we find that Rod has a crush on Nicky. Then he realises that he was the one dreaming, as he wakes up when Nicky comes to bed. Later, Nicky blurts out his suspicion that Rod is gay. Rod insists he has a girlfriend named Alberta in Vancouver and kicks Nicky out of their apartment. In the end, Rod finally comes out as gay, and Nicky finds him a boyfriend (Ricky), who, save for the body and clothes, looks and talks exactly like Nicky. Rod and Ricky (assumedly) start dating, and as you can see in this video, get married. Hope that clears things up (or not, I'm bad at explanations.). And yes, the fandom is a complete mess.
