  • Welcome back to building our 40ft wooden sailing boat "Tarkine".
    In this video we begin restoring our old portholes. This involves a bit of fire, water and elbow grease. We also break out the iron and kettle to steam bend out cabin trim.
    Household appliances for the win!

    👏 👏 👏 great work you guys . Congrats on getting over 10 thousand !!!
    Always good to see free ranging chooks. No predators for them around there .? Or safe night hutch.
    Best portlights
    Nice hands on steam bending too.!

      Thank you! The chooks have a safe night time chook house ❤️ there definitely are predators out there at night. Obie the dog watches then during the day. Thanks for following along!

    Steam bending works best on riven wood, not wood sent through a table saw.
    (rive: to split along the natural grain)
    As a cabinet maker - now retired - I would sort through stacks, at the lumber yard, for planks with long, straight splits in them. The face of the split I would joint, then use that as my working edge. Do you get it? So VERY happy for your 10,000 subscribers!

      @Building_a_Boat_by_the_River  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah we just needed a bit of camber for the cabin, it held enough shape when we took it off the jig so yeah did work! We will show it in the next video probably

    All my steaming has been on huge timber in massive steam boxes. This is the first time I've seen a practical way of steaming small stock without the complicated creation the steam boxes to fit! Well done , to teach an old dog new tricks. 🤔🙄😉😄😜

      Oh well our pleasure! Haha it’s not as effective as a steam box but it certainly helps. Especially when you don’t have a steam box handy!

    10,200 subs when I watched it just now.. I've heard others say that once you have reached 10k your channel will grow pretty steadily until the next hurdle at 30k.. you keep putting out great content like you have been and by the time you 2 are ready to set sail on your maiden voyage you will have a following big enough to keep you sailing on.. have you thought about setting up a Amazon wishlist so subscribers who feel like helping out can purchase things you need going forward??

    A good little trick indeed.I was going to say,check your local timber supplier for curvy timber,I usually have to put a lot aside before I find a straight piece.But these two specific pieces are special timber I’m guessing.

    • @Building_a_Boat_by_the_River
      @Building_a_Boat_by_the_River  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep! We have a few curvy bits around but bending with an iron seems like a bit of fun and it had to be a certain type of timber as you said

    Need to take a candle while its hot and run around and seam.. the wax will melt and get into any threads or whatever is holding the 2 pieces together and then it will spin right off.. a old school mechanic friend of mine taught me this trick.
