It's on purpose. It has been part of the racial/racist narrative that was used to justify the invasions, colonisation of the African continent. The church, the newspapers and landowners used it. Of course it was on purpose because an official cheated Venus out of a Wimbledon match a couple of months earlier that same year. I see players nearly fighting umpires and putting their hands on them (Djokovic) but nobody says nothing.
