Good job. I own code 4, thanks for showing me how much it can take.. It is my urban edc and it is doing a great job. Now i ordered SR1 Lite for my farm job it did a better job than alot of fixed blade you've tested. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. KEEP THE GOOD WORK.
@@AncientDJs it is great, i cut alot of rope and plastic with it, also food prep around the farm. Basic jobs it works great. I like both science a friend of mine bought the tanto. Love the tests you do. It's great to see how far certain steels can go. I'm for one surprised that s35vn holds up this well, but I'm glad I own some s35vn knives now.
I really enjoy your torture tests. Poor knives lol. I am about to purchase Code 4 with a clip point blade, and your test was very helpful to see how much it can take. Thank you and be safe from broken and flying blades.
Good test, I'd say it did pretty well especially for an EDC style knife (hence the lightweight and thinness). From my experience S35VN is a great mix of toughness and edge retention although I, like I'm sure everyone else in the comments, don't subject it to anything like these tests. I carry a clip point Code 4 at work every day as an electrician and it's great in that role. A great hiking/outdoor folding knife too since it's so strong and fairly large without being a chonky thiccboi like the SR1 it 4Max. In my opinion any knife bigger than an AD10 is annoying to carry and people will think you're weird(er).
@@joex I have both, the Code 4 is much better to carry, especially since I usually already have a bunch of heavy tools on me at work. The SR1 is really long in the pocket and very thicker. The handle material and pocket clip are really tight and rough to get in and out of a pocket.
Excellent video. Good demonstration of toughness vs hardness. Deformed tip, chipped edge and snapped blade are all signs of hard steel. I bet it would hold an edge forever. For those seeing this video and thinking the code 4 is turd, this is the trade off in toughness vs hardness. The knife is an excellent cutting/edge-holding monster.
@@joex your destruction tests favor tough knives, with less hardness and less edge holding capabilities. The rope cutting test @CedricAda demonstrates nothing but hardness. Gotta watch both to appreciate knives and be thoroughly entertained. Haha
Good point! This is thin blade with hollow grind. Excellent slicer, excellent edge retention. Thin profile and lightweight. As already said, it's a tradeoff with toughness. Who prefer toughness should avoid this model.
Its always good to know what a knife you want or own CAN DO.. Me personally will never ever put a knife through those trials, but the peace of mind I get from knowing it can take that abuse is Settling.. Thank you !
@1970vehueland those knives have an objectively worse grind for slicing tasks and are heavier & less pocketable. Your thought process is like saying “a new Porsche isn’t a fast car because it would lose a race with a Le Mans prototype” All of life is a trade off. The truth is - the overwhelming majority of knife owners aren’t going to push their knives to do 5% of what is done in these “tests”. The code 4 is overkill for the vast bulk of edc users.
That knife 🔪 isn’t meant for that type of work but for a S35VN clip point blade,it held up extremely well. That’s a far less durable steel than say 420HC or D2. It’s meant for edge retention so it’s more of a slicing/cutting blade.
I think I will have to sell my recon 1 and get another 4 Max scout.Good video Joe.For the people who wants him to test knives send him instead of asking him.

I hope you test other brands other than Cold Steel. I own quite a few Steel Will folding knives, I bet you Steel Will Censor F13A1 and Steel Will Warbot will survive as good if not better than MOST of the Cold Steel you tested. I think the one from Cold Steel that is obviously stronger than the 2 Steel Will is the SR1 Lite. I hope you can test those. A lot of Cold Steel are TOO BIG AND TOO HEAVY FOR EDC. The two I suggested are 6oz and 4 3/4" closed length, nothing like Cold Steel bigger ones. It's NOT practical to EDC unless in the woods or forest!!!

Hard to believe that cheap 8cr14MoV steel in SR-1 Lite beats this expensive "super steel" in every possible aspect although the sr-1 is a bit thicker...I will stick with cheap SR-1 Lite and have far superior knife steel lol. As always, Joe X is the man who reveals the truth about all steels out there that claim to be "super steels" and leaves nothing hidden :)
Do you not understand the goal and purpose of supersteels? S35VN isn't designed to be the toughest steel in the world. It's designed to be tough enough while having solid edge retention and edge retention. If you want to wail on a knife then this steel isn't for you. If you want a solid edc knife that is more than capable of dealing with what that entails, s35vn is great. I enjoy these tests because they show us the absolute limits of a tools toughness but these tests do not represent normal use cases for a folding knife.
All I can say is why? This shows nothing of value to the knife Community, I can break anything if I try hard enough or use things for purpose they aren't designed for. This contributes nothing to the knife Community other than destroying a knife for no data.
