Yes! We definitely need improved and expanded public transit infrastructure to better host the world and serve those who live here long term. SLC and and the State of Utah should get on board and publicly endorse the citizen proposed Rio Grande Plan. It has so many benefits to it that will contribute towards a more sustainable future for our rapidly growing region. Lets use the momentum the returning Olympics will bring to improve our communities!
To whoever is interested in and cares about improved regional transit and the long term sustainability of SLC and Utah, you should look up The Rio Grande Plan. It is a citizen proposal that would restore the historic Rio Grande Depot as the new Central Station. It's increased rail capacity in addition to FrontRunner Service would enable Trax realignment, rail service to Park City and Tooele and expanded Amtrak Service as well as intermodal connections. There are also a multitude of other benefits this plan can offer.
Right now we are working to raise awareness in the public and to our elected officials. If you find our vision for a better Utah compelling please contact your elected officials and express your support. We need many voices for the powers that be to take this seriously.
Snowbasin will have all the alpine events this time. Also, no way they put a 40-60 person team to Allen Peak, absolutely no need for that, limited skiable terrain up there that can’t handle that kind of capacity. Last time, they put a temporary rope tow to get the women to the starting house, I imagine they’ll do something similar again.
Excellent observation; there is no reason to spend money on replacing the tram, it works fine and serves what it needs. The John Paul replacement should be the main focus for now; Strawberry & Needles 🚠 will eventually be replaced, but they’re still pretty solid. I wish they would put the 🌞 back on them!
Assuming the John Paul lift is still working well and safely, there’s really no need to upgrade it. There’s only been a few times I’ve seen lines there backed up, and that’s usually in the morning of Saturday or a holiday.
I would love to see a rail system connecting downtown SLC and possibly the airport with the ski resorts. It would be a game changer. We need to catch up with the superior European system of doing things
Utah Transit Authority came out recently with their 2034 plans. Sadly, no projects oriented towards canyon service. However, they do want to build a direct service from the airport to the village. High Valley Transit which is an agency more around the Park City area. Wants to build bus lanes for buses coming from Salt Lake to Park City

Gondola seems like a decent idea to me. Cheaper than expanding the bus service and once its up and running no need to worry about politicians cutting its service in half like the buses had. There are plenty of other canyons to enjoy if you really hate looking at gondolas. Plus it'll connect big and little cottonwood once they expand it and maybe even park city eventually.

Public transport for skiing can be incredible! I went skiing in Japan. From Tokyo I took a bullet train right to the base of the ski resort. If we had a network of trains to arrive at ski resorts that would be amazing.
I find it funny how I’ve lived in Utah my entire life and have never skiied and never really even been to the ski resorts except driving through the cottonwood canyon and Park City, the small coal mining town my grandpa grew up in. His house is now a historic building surrounded by ski rental apartments 😂
That’s cool! Last time I went there, they had to do construction against one of those houses, so the house basically just got put on support beams while they dig under it. Was a interesting site to see
I spoke to a patroller today about opening Carpenter since they added Regulator to the front side trails as it would thin the herd on Tuesdays and Weekends. He said it's so old and unreliable that they only run it periodically and only in the winter. :( Also, F the gondola.
Given the infrastructure that SLC built up from 2002, I’m so excited to see what comes out of 2034. There’s a lot of NIMBYs against the games but I’m hopeful they won’t get a chance to block it. Would be awesome to see the Olympics back in SLC.

They’re planning on adding a ski slope blocks from downtown? It’s only 4500ft elevation or so. Much of the time it’s warm and there’s 0 snow. I wonder how this will work.
Make mega resort with LCC BCC and PC improvements in transportation are definitely needed not enough parking in park city or room for that more traffic.
If maintained this could eliminate the need (and expense) for new venues. Winter Olympic bids could alternate between SLC and Lake Placid if it was still viable. Sorry Squaw Valley, you were the best.
Something important to note on the environmental sustainability front is that Snowbird recently finished a Geothermal power plant that supplies all the power to the resort. Pretty cool! It's located at the superior lot next to the fire station.
lotta great points for discussion and debate... i don't know about adding capacity to allen peak.... that little single file catwalk with switchbacks is treacherous enough with the dozen or so folks trying to make their way down it without slamming or sliding into the person in front of them. also just need more busses and add avalanche sheds for LCC. even though they did cut service, UTA had busses on standby so it was much better this year getting folks up and down both canyons.
LOL, the canyon gondola... If they announce that Ryan Socash will need to start writing a script about "the troubled history of the world's longest gondola". That thing is going to constantly break down and ultimately be abandoned due to astronomical maintenance costs. Combine that with dwindling snowfall and it's already a money pit.
Hey would you consider doing a video on which ski areas get DUMPED on the most at a time. Like Tahoe area looks like it gets these HUGE blizzards. Some areas get good snow all year but it's more even or consistent if you know what I mean. I wanna know who gets 1-2ft of pow at a time or more.

Yeah sorry to say this but I doubt this’ll actually go through. I live in Salt Lake and in order for us to be viable to have the Olympics here, the pollution needs to go down by a certain amount and with the lake all but dried up that just isn’t going to happen, sorry to be the bearer of bad news
We were there last year and it's nice - plus they have done (and are doing more) work to the airport which should make it even better. Park City really is beautiful. Everybody needs to buy a condo in the Sugar House district right now to rent out during the games.

I work at snowbasin as an event specialist in the summer and parking manager in the winter. I am SO excited to be apart of the Olympics! I’m locked in at Snowbasin until 2035 it looks like 💪🎉❤ Luckily we have already increased our bus stops and work with UTA. We also have no plan on charging for pricing in our parking lots 🤙
Net Zero skiing is a joke until the jets(for one flight, per person) aren't producing the emissions of an average person in a developing nation for a year.
The Cottonwood gondola makes way more sense than thousands of cars spewing shit everywhere,and sitting goingnowhere filling the canyon with pollution. No to mention negation a lot of the dangers an accidents and money spent having to clear the road.
Recommend doing some deeper research on the proposed gondola. It seems like such a wonderful plan until you dig into all the nitty gritty detail. The gondola isn’t going to happen.
The gondola would apparently take 55 minutes. That is way too long. Best idea is to significantly increase buses at peak times once they start the toll booth collection

I am in favor of the LCC gondola. But you know what I'm in even more favor for? MORE SKI RESORTS!! There aren't enough! If you study the history of ski resort development, you'll see growth pick up in the 1930's and really strong resort growth in the 1950's and 1960's. There has barely been a trickle of new ski resorts since the 1980's and yet the population has increased tremendously since then. The U.S. Forest Service needs to permit the use of more of it's land for ski resort development. We are too good at saying no these days.
we dont need a gondola. We need avalanche sheds to protect from the big storm, and we need to implement more public transport via busses. I also think we should benefit carpools rather than single drivers. The gondola should be the absolute LAST resort.
If enough people are willing to pay, there would be more ski resorts. There are plenty a fairly remote ski areas that barely have enough resources to operate on the weekends.
I think a huge problem facing new ski resorts is environmentalism. Environmentalists get really pissy when someone tries to develop in the mountains. They also have more power over the forest service than private land and the forest service owns the vast majority of viable land for ski resorts.
I really hope SLC isn't a constant location for the Olympics, that would be a nightmare. Also, pretty much everyone agrees that something needs to be done regarding traffic in BCC and LCC, just that the gondola isn't the answer...most hate that idea. Getting rid of the Epic and Ikon passes would be a good start.
Are you seriously saying world renowned resorts like Alta and Snowbird would magically have less traffic if they get taken off a megapass? I doubt that. I think the best solution other than rail would be bus service every 5 minutes and the only private vehicles allowed in the canyon are residents and deliveries. I do agree that the gondola is a really f***ing stupid idea though.

Dwindling snowfall? 2 years ago was around 1,000 inches. Last year was no slouch either, after Jan 11.

I was thinking the same thing. Looks like only about 5.4 miles from downtown PC to Solitude. Would probably take 35-40 minutes.

Would love to see Denver or Reno/Sacramento to try for a bid in the future. Maybe the 2 only other viable locations in the U.S to host besides SLC
I mean, Lake Placid has already hosted two Olympics, so I'm guessing that would be a viable host.
Denver does not have the political will to host the games, and the other two are tough from an infrastructure and financial standpoint.

I work at snowbasin as an event specialist in the summer and parking manager in the winter. I am SO excited to be apart of the Olympics! I’m locked in at Snowbasin until 2035 it looks like 💪🎉❤
Luckily we have already increased our bus stops and work with UTA. We also have no plan on charging for pricing in our parking lots 🤙

Como Park is a little small compared to the other ski resorts that are currently in our rankings (at least the outdoor ones)… but we’ll see!

Net Zero skiing is a joke until the jets(for one flight, per person) aren't producing the emissions of an average person in a developing nation for a year.
The Cottonwood gondola makes way more sense than thousands of cars spewing shit everywhere,and sitting goingnowhere filling the canyon with pollution. No to mention negation a lot of the dangers an accidents and money spent having to clear the road.

Recommend doing some deeper research on the proposed gondola. It seems like such a wonderful plan until you dig into all the nitty gritty detail. The gondola isn’t going to happen.
The gondola would apparently take 55 minutes. That is way too long. Best idea is to significantly increase buses at peak times once they start the toll booth collection
@@res_ipsa-REX I do'n think that is too long.I would use that time to gear up,make sure my boots are pefect. have a snack, relax a bit before starting the day. instead of being in a stessfull car with people behind you beeping, passing you...slding off into the canyon below..that sorta thing. i think it would be quicker than that. maybe 15 minutes longer than driving if it does take that long.
@@ShaunEk1 I have though. It cost almost 2 million per mile just to build road. An ha a high maintince cost than the gondola,and needs to be cleared of snow and rock and debirs o the regular. the envoinmental impact in the long term would be far worse than with no gondola and just adding more highway. the highway itself has already "scarred" the canyon" and when its life is over it will no leave nearly the scare that a big highway does. all the gas , greese ,brake dust, coolant. how many people die on the cottowod canyon roads each year?
I am in favor of the LCC gondola. But you know what I'm in even more favor for? MORE SKI RESORTS!! There aren't enough! If you study the history of ski resort development, you'll see growth pick up in the 1930's and really strong resort growth in the 1950's and 1960's. There has barely been a trickle of new ski resorts since the 1980's and yet the population has increased tremendously since then. The U.S. Forest Service needs to permit the use of more of it's land for ski resort development. We are too good at saying no these days.
we dont need a gondola. We need avalanche sheds to protect from the big storm, and we need to implement more public transport via busses. I also think we should benefit carpools rather than single drivers. The gondola should be the absolute LAST resort.
If enough people are willing to pay, there would be more ski resorts. There are plenty a fairly remote ski areas that barely have enough resources to operate on the weekends.
I think a huge problem facing new ski resorts is environmentalism. Environmentalists get really pissy when someone tries to develop in the mountains. They also have more power over the forest service than private land and the forest service owns the vast majority of viable land for ski resorts.

I really hope SLC isn't a constant location for the Olympics, that would be a nightmare. Also, pretty much everyone agrees that something needs to be done regarding traffic in BCC and LCC, just that the gondola isn't the answer...most hate that idea. Getting rid of the Epic and Ikon passes would be a good start.

Are you seriously saying world renowned resorts like Alta and Snowbird would magically have less traffic if they get taken off a megapass? I doubt that. I think the best solution other than rail would be bus service every 5 minutes and the only private vehicles allowed in the canyon are residents and deliveries. I do agree that the gondola is a really f***ing stupid idea though.
@@ItllBeFetch Whats stupid is that there is virtually no good mass public transit in this country beside a few places. Gondolas a viable mass public trasic tools. Especially in the mountains.If Utah legilized cannabis for recreational use they could have enough money to build the little cottonwood gondola in less than a year.
I mean we could just do buses with expanded parking at the base and bus lines radiating into the city. 1 bus takes 30+ cars off the road, it seems very doable
The beginning of the end began when the first Olympics came to Utah. We used to have paradise. Now it’s just over crowded nonsense. I wish the Olympic’s never came to this state. Now it’s only going to get worse.
As a lifelong Utahn, sorry my dude but desirable places are well.. desirable. Just how it works. Utah is not a secret anymore and never will be again. But there are benefits to the growth too that imo far exceed our former exclusivity

The notion that Salt Lake City would even be contemplated as a PERMANENT host of the Olympics every four years is an absolutely laughable joke and you should be ashamed of it.
Olympic committees aren't comprised of just Americans, and they're obligated to vary the host COUNTRY, not just the host city. Stupid thing to put in the video.
