DRT/ SRT tips for difficult trees for throwball

- Hunters Who climb trees typically have no training. One of the reasons we made these videos was to introduce hunters to what arborists use to climb safely. Just like anything its incumbent on you to seek out training , and practice to learn how to do it properly. It's no different than learning firearm safety or anything that's inherently dangerous.

This video really helped me spot a lot more usable trees, just realizing that from the right angle I can often toss it really high, and then work the throw ball back down to the limb I want. Thx guys.

Scott, I have ordered equipment as you suggest and looking forward to it. My backpack, FYI, also holds my two piece Mini Crossbow from Hickory Creek Archery. It weighs less than 6 pounds, 150 pound pull on the upright crossbow, fires 400 gr arrows over 330 fps and it will be in my backpack with ALL of the good stuff you and Joe use. Very helpful suggestions. I'm new to this, but I'm finding that manipulating the throw line can be extremely frustrating.

I'm uncertain of which tree limbs would be ideal for getting the rope across because on the videos it's hard to see. In one of the videos you mentioned of the rule of thumb is, "the girth of your arm."????
Not sure if you saw this video but it might help. Our rule of thumb is a healthy limb larger than your forearm. When in doubt climb through the crotch not over the limb . If you have plenty of confidence in the limb climb again at the crotch not out on a limb because leverage can snap a limb . Good example Scott on isolation of the DRT climbing line set up. Breaking the branch is no problem because the deer may look your way but you can remain still for 3 to 5 min. Nock a arrow and ground hunt a few min. I had deer come in because after the branch break i used grunts and rattle.

One thing I've learned is be ready to give it gobs of slack when pulling the throwball past a limb. If the throwball picks up a swing, it's going to want to wrap itself around the nearest thing. Better to just let it drop a couple extra feet.
Just got my throw line and bag this guy has skills. Very difficult starting out. Practice is neccessary. Still waiting on my tethrd saddle then I'll be ready to go.
Preset paracord loops are your friend. Good luck !
Thanks for the video guys. I use a smaller diameter line in case the ball vill get stuck(as you said in the video). Then you're able to pull the line until it breaks at the knot and then put my spear ball on having another try and get the first ball if it didn't fall down that is. Keep imp the good work :) /TJ

I, being not only cheap, but also broke, decided to make my own throw ball. I thought it turned out pretty good and filled with BBs came out spot on 14oz. I was wondering if it would hold up at all as my sewing skills are out of practice and reviews on Amazon throw balls seem to mention blowing out the seams after only a few throws. I was using 50' of orange Paracord as throw line and after a few wild shots finally landed the perfect throw through a Y crotch about 35' up a straight tree. The ball didn't pull all the way down and I tried to flick the line as shown, but it just pulled up the tree untill the ball was firmly lodged in the crotch of the tree (in my apartment complex) with bright orange line dangling down and every attempt to break loose ending in frustration. I finally pulled the line straight down the trunk of the tree and stood on it and after a great about of stretch the ball came hurling down and slammed into the ground 10' behind me. The seams blew out and the BBs were falling on the ground. Not a horrible experience for a first attempt, but still think I might save up to get a real throw ball and line kit from Wespur. I'm using a 2mm UHMWPE cord (emmakites on amazon). It's 1000lb, doesn't stretch, has no memory, and it's super slick. It drops easily through all kinds of clutter with a 12oz throw ball.
Great Video! What do you do when there are no branches or big enough branches? Some pines trees in Texas have branches that I would have a hard time reaching or if i can, not enough rope for the climb. SRT is my main method.
Yes SRT is preferred for pines anyway as the sap would gum up the climbing line using DRT without a friction saver but if you make the investment in SRT gear no point in using DRT if you have SRT gear . We just save the cost on the SRT gear by staying DRT and we very rarely hunt conifers and when I do I usually use my sticks

Hi. I noticed in some of your videos you mention about having a second bridge on your saddle. Do yo have a video on how and where to install this. Haven't been able to find info on this yet.
Here's one way to do it. However on my new solitude, I removed the web bridge I had on my retired Flex saddle and added it to my solitude so I have two adjustable web bridges . I leave one short for climbing the other long for sitting, however I'm always tied in on some level to both for redundancy. Here's the video on how I added a factory arborist saddle bridge to my old saddle.

@@NYSaddleHunter Yes, it was, I appreciate you remembering to explain it. I would have not thought to make the paracord into one large loop and tying a small loop to hook a carabiner into. I imagined it as once you had paracord in the tree, you'd pull the climbing rope up, and the paracord would get pulled out of the tree and would stay on the ground. while you climbed and hunted. Then at the end of the hunt when the climbing rope was pulled from the tree you'd pull the paracord back up on the end of it again. Your method is easier. Thanks again.
Hey Guys, Thanks for the very informative videos. They have me up and running good fashion. I can say with out hesitation that the hardest part of saddle hunting so far is getting the throw ball over the crotch I want to climb to. I have used the throw ball attached directly to the paracord so that when I get it back down I don't have to pull it up and over, I'm done. I'm successful so far, can you think of any way this could come back and bite me on the rear? Thanks again for the great vids.

I've used the throwball with just paracord and done it that way when setting our vine licking branches. The pros of using a good throwline is their alot stronger and more difficult to tangle, and they tend to run over the limbs with less friction so they will be more likely to go over the limb and make it all the way to the ground.
The throwball is really easy in concept but it requires some practice to get good at it and it can be frustrating at first.
Practice and once you master it , it will really make this entire method much easier. I agree the throwball is absolutely hardest part, climbing is easy.

Great information guys! New to saddle hunting just bought Predator 11.4mm rope will the Grigri+ work as a belay device when specs say up to 11mm rope? Does that .4mm make that much difference in size than 11mm? Wondering if you guys know of anyone that uses the Grigri+ which is the latest version on the Predator 11.4mm rope?
Can you show what you mean by Hitch Knotting the crouch of the limb and the purpose, etc? Can you show your technique?
Erik I think you mean "Girth hitch". All that means is your climbing line is either going over the limb or around the "girth" of the tree. So your climbing line is not just supported by the limb but over the limb and around the girth or trunk of the tree.

Sorry, I meant to write Girth Hitch. So basically, as my very first question as in the other video, you want the climbing rope to be saddled in that crouch or pocket of the limb and the trunk where strongest?
I was looking up Girth Hitch and saw demonstrations on a Girth Hitch knot and was perplexed how that worked out and what you all mean. Thank you for the clarification.
@@martinezerik9 Yes your line over the limb through the crotch and the girth of the tree between both ends of your climbing line.
If you have a large enough healthy limb it could simply be over the limb but the girth of the tree is always strongest and to be tied in closer to the trunk and not out on a limb is generally more comfortable and it will hide you best. We like to tie in well above our head height even at times 10' above as this gives us 360 degree mobility around the tree so you can always position yourself for a strong side shot.

No , I haven’t personally. I know people who do. There extremely comfortable only problem for a hunting saddle there’s a lot of metal on it : rings and D rings. If your looking for that style New Tribe sells a lot of recreational Saddles

When we go early and still dark how can we do?
You wouldn't use a throwball in the dark only in daylight. We usually pre set our hunting spots by post and pre season scouting. We pick our trees and install a paracord loop and leave it permanently to be able to come back and pull our line into the tree in the future without having to use a throwball in the dark or when deer may be close on the days we hunt
hey guys i'm learning the drt sometimes the top two loops are to tight to advance the rope up any suggestions
Howard A few questions so I can understand whats happening. What kind of rope are you using? Are you utilizing the tending knot to pull up your blakes hitch without needing to advance the knot by hand ?

I bought this rope from amazon, was advertised as predator .It was not they thanked me for my order and asked me how I liked the rope ,called it something gold. Any the two top loops on the blakes seem to be to tight so can I loosen them up a little .
@@howardswayne4543 sampson predator climbing line from weespur is where we get ours. usually the bottom two loops tighten most but not so much that they cant pull your line through it. How do you keep from getting your throw line full of unwanted knots?
Good quality throw line is slightly static and it doesn't get tangled to often
Paul Crave I’m just assuming that you wrap your throw line up real tight instead of wrapping your line up real tight get a little pouch or throwball bag and when you put the line back away put the line in on top of itself in a circle that way it can’t get all knotted up it’ll keep the line more organized and from tangling up making the knots in the line
I knep my throwing line on a fly reel then take out as much line as needed and shoot it up the tree.

Joe i bought the rope you use for srt. i did that because it was a smaller diameter rope but its not flexible to use for drt. and i have alot of problems with my friction hitch locking up. what can i do? im climbing drt using the jrb climbing system. the rope doesnt work well for me to ty a friction hitch . its too stiff.

So then you put a carabiner on the loop to hook your rope into and pull your rope up. Great idea. Ever have carabiners get hung up in crotches?
Yes , we have and if that happens we just pull it back the opposite direction. If you're concerned you could also just use the other end of your rope and tie a simple overhand knot
