  • This is a dramatic story of a Mormon Handcart Journey that left too late in the year to get to Salt Lake City from the East. Several of the pioneers died trying to pull their belongings by hand before being rescued with volunteers and wagons from Salt Lake City.

    My son's ancestor was Captain James Grey Willie himself. The sign board was a miracle save.

    My 5th great grandfather Joseph McKay from County Antrim, Ireland was part of the Willie Handcart Company. He collapsed with frozen feet while they were going through the South Pass and a man named Andrew Smith from Scotland picked him up and carried him down into Rock Creek Hollow. MacKay survived, and he and Smith became good friends. McKay’s daughter Jane later married Andrew Smith.

    I just learned about this rescue after visiting the National Trails Interpretive Center. I found myself taken by it do much that I visted Martin's Cove Visitor's Center the next day. I highly recommend it not only to learn about this rescue, but also to see the sights in person. When its not a blizzard, its a gorgeous view.

    There was a new member of the Twelve at Winter😮 Quarters with the Willey company. He allowed the Saints , in my opinion, to vote themselves to go or not to go, rather than plead to His Heavenly Father for direction. The decision was his to make as the Presiding Authority. The Apostle was in horse & buggies with missionaries and traveled prior to the 1856 Willey& Martin companies departure the same year. Some stayed at Winter Quarters til Spring. There were plenty of empty pioneer cabins at Winter Quarters for them to stay the winter comfortably. Some did stay the winter, in winter quarters and lived. It was a great tragedy for many scandin
    vians and fewer English.

      Quote. And this GOSPEL of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all NATIONS and the end will come..

      As I have carried the Utah Flag to restore it I found that about half of the population does not care. Their own words. Dan McCay even himself told me that Pioneers would care less about what we are doing now. He is not from Utah but has changed our Historical Flag. We need to care more.

    I wonder if people went back to their dead, in the spring, to bury the dead they wrapped and left on top of the frozen ground. I don't remember ever hearing that they did.

      This is very gruesome to mention, but even if they had tried; they probably would not have liked what they saw if there was anything left. No doubt the wolves would have gotten to the bodies and had their way with them. The people on the Oregon Trail who had what would be considered a "proper" burial had their graves buried deep and covered with stones to keep wolves from digging the bodies up as they would.

    What an ill conceived tragedy. You would think a church would care enough to figure it out and do what was right for their people. I realize they were fleeing their leader's criminal reputation but to endanger them this way was unforgivable.

      And all to save on the cost of the journey west of Iowa City, which should have been made with oxen-pulled wagons as it had been with previous converts. Expecting emigrants to walk about 1,000 miles (including little children and expecting mothers and the elderly) through the Rockies(!) in winter, facing certain frostbite and death due to exposure. Brigham Young was allegedly 'outraged', claiming the men in charge disobeyed his instructions about provisions and travel times.

      Which world view requires no faith? I've been a philosophy major for several years now and I'm dying to know your answer. BTW There's really no need to be insulting. How about we talk like big boys and girls instead of school children. Who knows we might come to understand each other better and you might even convince me of something, wouldn't that be a more profitable conversation?

    • @kenwalz7231
      @kenwalz7231 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How can I be more clear........RELIGION MAKES YOU STUPID. If you find that insulting...get over it. All religion now and always is made up bullshit to get the masses to fight and serve some religious agenda...Mormons are off the scale with stupidity! Also what is the difference between boys, girls and school children?

    • @looseseal324
      @looseseal324 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol "Religion makes you stupid" That is quite a claim; show me some evidence. I'd also like you to answer my very simple question. I asked which world view requires no faith? Also if you want to really argue your point you should study someone other than Dawkins, he's an excellent scientist but a terrible philosopher. You really don't have to ridicule with contempt as he suggested. Anyone is far more likely to agree with your claim if you present it in a kindly manner.

      Look at the leadership of this church. Incredibly intelligent. Industry leaders in medicine and law, etc. All left it to serve.
      I hope you are comfortable in your knowledge of where you come from, why you are here and where you go after this life.
      All the education in the world will never tell you that.

    Whoever made this should be ashamed of themselves. The handcart pioneers were heavily pressured by the Mormon elders to take this perilous journey even though it was late in the season. They were told no one would die. They were told there would be no snow. Of course Brigham Young sent out a rescue party----it was his pressure that caused Franklin Richards to keep them coming that killed so many of these people.

    • @danholtvideo
      @danholtvideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Sarah Pratt Thanks for your input, Sarah. This was an important part of American History. It was a very tragic journey. Fortunately, many others made the trek without such a great loss.

    • @sarahpratt9
      @sarahpratt9 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Dan Holt The fact that many people did not die does not excuse the Mormon leadership from it's direct part in the death of over 200 people. Have some respect for the truth. This video whitewashes this experience by leaving out the pressure put on the immigrants to continue on despite common sense warnings. I don't understand how the truth can be omitted and still be called the truth. Read Mary Burton's account and you will see what REALLY happened. And such a big deal made about the rescue. This story has heroes, yes, but also villains who get a complete pass by this video. Brigham Young and Franklin Richards to start with.

    • @danholtvideo

      +Sarah Pratt Sarah: This video was made by the Mormon Church. I'm not a Mormon, although I seriously looked into it years ago, but it was a very interesting story, so I put it on our local TV station. I guess many of us may not ever know all the story as is true with several major events.

    • @sarahpratt9
      @sarahpratt9 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Dan Holt Hi Dan---sorry to be so critical. There is a lot of documentation regarding the reasons for this debacle. I think the video has value, as long as people understand that there is a real attempt to make the Mormon church look like heroes without accepting responsibility for the pioneers attempting the trip so late. I do think the video has some value---thanks for your patience.

      Sarah Although these are true stories that relate to events in the lives of real people, some even gave their lives for a cause in what they truly believed in.... and have you ever heard of a survivor of that company criticise the leaders of the church. one survivor of that company stated " we came through with the absolute knowledge that God lives, for we became acquainted with him in our extremities..... These were good humble people trying to reach their destination the best way they could and although some died along the way, blessed and honoured will they be remembered as pioneers.
