And this is why I rank 2pac above Jay Z and Biggie…his ability to rap with so much passion about situations that need addressing but get overlooked

Pac was not the most lyrical. He didn't need to be. when he rapped he had the cadence of a preacher, putting every emotion he had in to his words. when he hurt, we hurt, when he laughed we laughed with him and when he hated, it was absolute. I'm glad you are finding music that speaks to you and that you can relate to. its why 2Pac will always be timeless, his songs are about the human experience.
Please listen to DMX "Slippin'", Ghost Face Killah "all that I got is you" With Mary J Blige and Naughty by nature's "Ghetto Bastard". All deal with real life struggles. Proof that rap doesn't just have to be about cash, drugs and sex, but is an art form that has substance and touches on a variety of topics and represent all facets of our lives.

The whole ''2pac is not lyrical'' is a bullshit propaganda started in the late early 2000's, that came from backpack hip-pop snob writers from NewYork mag to discredit all the accolades and worldwide recognition a deceased 2PAC was receiving over his living peers.
Just because 2PAC didnt rap with a exaggerated heavy NewYork accent and cadence doesnt mean he wasnt lyrical. 2PAC has many songs where he raps with metaphors and similes, especially in his youth with his rap group strictly dope. As 2PAC matured Self-aggradizing lyrical content became elementary compared to overall social content. If you want to hear 2PAC gritty lyrical content the i suggest you go back and revisit all of the Makaveli Bootlegs.

A NY accent has nothing to do with Lyricism, Andre 3k was never not considered a lyricist, despite his southern drawl, or Common with his Midwestern Chicago accent. I have been a fan of Pac since his digital underground days, I've listened to it all.
I get it, people will defend Pac no matter what and he might be your ride or die, but the fact remains, even when he was alive, his lyrical ability was secondary to his delivery and content. Its not that he couldn't or didn't deliver dope rhymes, metaphors and similes, but there is a reason songs like Brenda's got a baby, dear mama, Hit em up and to live and die in LA are some of his best known songs.
I've been having this conversation with people since at least 90. I'm from the west Coast in Cali, we don't disrespect Tupac, but I also have my opinion that in his own era, he was not considered amongst the greatest Lyricists. He was good and able to deliver, but he was contemporaries with Nas, BIG, Andre 3k, Common, Rakim, Trech, Big Pun, Jay Z, Kurupt, GURU, Inspectah Deck, GZA, Big L, Kane, LL Cool J, E40, and Redman. He might have been on par with some of them , but a case can be made for every one of these rappers to be considered a better lyricist, not necessarily a better rapper.
Remember, during Pacs life, NY hip hop dominated. the West had deathrow and independent artists in the bay, while the South and mid west was just starting to break through but not yet established themselves like that.
Its easy to be revisionist when it comes to history, but Tupac can be considered on of the greatest rappers without being one of the greatest lyricists. It takes nothing away from him or his music

@@pronedizzle Youre preaching to choir with the accent argument. We already know NewYork bias and it's already been called out on line and in many interviews for years concerning the typical stereotypeof what a '' lyrical MC'' is.. I've also had this conversation since the mid 90'a. and I'm from Down South, Columbia SC.. and 2PAC has been regarded heavy as the GOAT. In every hood, project , and rural area we bump 2PAC & THE OUTLAWZ..The young and the old. You'll hear a
      Blasphemy,
      Street Fame,
      Made Niggaz,
      Military Mindz,
      So Many Tears,
      Definition of A Thug Nigga,
      HighSpeed,
      Me And My Girlfriend ,
      Cant C Me,
Troublesome 96, and the list goes on.
The argument and overall worldwide consensus (outside of the 5 boroughs) is its not that 2PAC cant do what your favorite rapper does. That's obvious 2PAC could go there if he chose to (for example his works on the Strictly 4 My NIGGAZ album) but the question is.. Can your favorite rappers do what 2PAC did ? In regards to all the famous introspective works live the songs you mentioned. Those songs tackled social issues along with politics. No other rappers / mc's were doing what 2PAC did at that level at that time. 2PAC named the rappers who influenced him and he delivered their styles in a total package that was marketable but it also challenged the status quo. 30+years later have yet to see any others rise to the standard on that scale.

@@computablu you make an important point, most rappers couldn't do what he did, but Pac could stand with the very best at what they did. I was speaking directly to what Pacs impact was on hip hop culture. he often CHOSE to not be lyrical in order to deliver a more emotional or direct message with his songs. This might be a better choice of words on my part than what i originally said. We can all agree he was one of a kind and considered more than a rapper or lyricist or even pop star, but an Icon of the culture.
