    This is Elliott Smith's final concert. Recorded at Redfest at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on September 19, 2003. He died a few weeks later on October 21, 2003.
    You may be wondering why the first three songs are missing, I was moving around that night trying to find a good place to film from and the footage is simply a mess. If I had known how important it would be to get good video I would've done a much better job. I apologize for the poor quality of the video and the audio. When I recently rediscovered this footage I tried to clean it up as best I could. I exported the video in 1080P, though it was originally captured in SD (720x480).
    I also deeply apologize for taking so many years to upload this video. I uploaded 'Say Yes' to the forum on SweetAdeline.net a day or two after the concert (before he died), but in those days there was no way to share such large files freely online. Months became years and I lost track of all my old video tapes. I thought the original tape was lost 10 years ago. Fortunately I rediscovered it not long ago and tracked down a MiniDV deck. It needs to be part of Elliott's public legacy.
    Elliott was then always will be a huge source of inspiration for me, as he does for so many others. Very few musicians allow us to go a deep into their lives as Elliott did. And almost none are so eloquent and talented. He is still missed.

      @Mookie Blaylock The person I was referring to was just kicking sand in people's faces, and he kept coming back. I certainly don't feel that people have to love any musician or artist, and they're welcome to express that here. But, when a person goes out of their way to just be an outright dick and doesn't even contribute a in a constructive way (positive or negative) then they can go right ahead and fuck themselves...or, at the very least, get their comments deleted.

      Me too...I wish I could just explain to him how much his music means to me..I'm also a musician and I would have liked to explain the genius I hear in his music in a deeper way..explain the admiration for his melodies/chords/lyrics and such, along with asking him what his thought process is when putting those melodies and chords together.. also just tell him his music has a way with people's hearts that is unique and rare and it comes from the beautiful life he put into every song..aside from the pure technical genius, he meant everything he was saying and knew how to convey a message using those melodies, chords and lyrics like no one else...wish I could have known him.

      I know what ya mean dude, everyone likes to just boil it all down to "all his songs are about drugs" but I'd like to think that "everyone" just lives in some box. and living in a box makes things too easy where you don't use your brains.

    • @elsbethsteele9285
      @elsbethsteele9285 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Scott Lave yeah, I don't think a lot of his song were about drugs. He may have been on drugs when he wrote some and that may have just been a part of his life so he talked about drugs sometimes. As anyone who has done drugs will. But there's much much much more to his songs than just drugs.

    • @branland7464
      @branland7464 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Scott Lave his music is more often about self loathing, bittersweet stories and depression than it is drugs I believe.

    Has anybody had a dream involving Elliott?. I had a dream about two years ago. I was sitting in a backyard with him and he was writing a song. When he finished, he sang some of it and asked me what I thought about it. Suddenly there were people around us clapping and commenting on the fact that the song was great. It was one of the best dreams I have had. I wish it had been for real. Just wanted to share that.

    People use to say Elliott's music is sad or depressing or whatever... I don't think it is. There's nothing like listening to Elliott after a tough day. It keeps you grounded. At least for me his music is mostly about feeling fine with loneliness and your own depression. It allows you to take the first fresh breath after a fucked up day. And it makes me incredibly happy. If I could just meet him and say "Hey man, thanks a lot"...

      really nah. if people would understand what he went through in his childhood and he would get the right therapy for it it is quite possible he would still be here today. he went through hell in his childhood and it effected his entire life. he didn't have the right support for it. he is pure enough to live in this world and be happy in it.

    • @BrianPremo
      @BrianPremo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@mcnimi I stand by my original comment. What he went through, or what he did or didn't do - doesn't change who he was at the core. It showed during interviews and his interactions with people in the audience in his shows. He was an open wound in a world full of razor blades.

      That makes sense since I can hear a lot of The White Album's influence in "Figure 8" and "From A Basement On The Hill". Elliott took that inspiration and made something so wonderful from it.

    a friend of mine killed himself about a month ago and I've been listening to nothing except Elliot Smith for the past month. Nothing else helps. I've listened to Elliott about 4000 times in the last 30 days. My friend's death has affected me so much because not only is it incredibly fucking sad that he killed himself right before graduating from high school, I'm incredibly suicidal myself and I've had to come face-to-face with the consequences my own suicide will have on everyone around me. It gives me some hope that Elliott was able to make it to 34. Hell, I didn't think I'd make it to 17 and my birthday is tomorrow. In any case, thank you Elliott, for helping me get through this shit and pouring yourself into your music and putting it out there. I'm sorry this world couldn't be somewhere comfortable for you. Wish I could have met you once, but you were alive before my time. I'm trying my best not to come meet you soon, wherever you are now.

    Elliott Smith changed my life in many ways. Not in some grandiose or clichè way. Before Elliott, it was a steady diet of punk rock. He taught me how to be patient, tolerant, darker and appreciate punk rock even more because Elliott was as DIY as they get. I won't do him justice by some simi-drunken rant. Just know, I named my son proudly after him. I'm forever grateful for having heard him. There really wasn't anything like him prior, and his uniqueness is too difficult to replicate. In my humble opinion (i.e. Elliott would have wanted to hear it said that way), the best singer/songwriter there ever was. Thank you for posting.

    21:45 ''I think it's kind of depressing'' he says, jokinly. Elliott was a genious that passed us by almost unnoticed. So were Bowie, Cash and John Lennon. They probably would have been satisfied having Elliotts level of exposure to the mainstream, too. It's just Elliott never got the chance to fully evolve out of his caccoon the way he intended. Big love to Elliott, where ever he may be.

    It's difficult to watch Elliott sometimes. There are moments where I feel like I'm watching an open wound. Like many fans, I just wish I could've hugged him or talked to him, but I realize his feelings about himself would not have changed because some random fan thought they could make him feel better.
    I became a fan in '97, and he was the last artist I was truly excited about (I'm old 😊). I'll never forget watching him on The Oscars just completely transfixed by what felt like an alternate reality. Elliott performing in the same venue as Celine Dion?? 🤯😀
    Thank you so much for uploading this. It's so bittersweet. I saw him around a year before this with a full band and he sounded great -- more confident than nearly any other of his performances I've seen. I listen to and play his music to this day. His music is truly timeless. Thank goodness we have plenty of it to listen to.

I offered my opinion, which would obviously get shouted down by some Beatles fan. After all they were great. But To call Elliott Smith a joker is just funny man, and he only wrote in A minor... wtf???
      Your lack of knowledge on the subject has tickled me, and to insinuate that I haven’t heard much music well... it’s precisely that I have had my ear to the ground that I put Elliott next to the Beatles.

      MICHAEL NEWHAM, what a beautiful and fitting tribute to write about someone such as Elliott Smith. I have read so many Beatles comparisons about him and sure, it is there to a degree. Many such as myself, Generation X (I am a year younger than Elliott) got started in our love for music with the Beatles. I started collecting Beatles albums when I was 9. However, by the time I was 10-11, I had already ran the gamut with the Beatles and now looking back we see how short lived they really were. More than that, I don't like seeing the Beatles comparison for the simple fact they were a Tavistock project and the real Paul McCartney has been long dead since November of 1966 and
      the Sir Paul McCartney we know & see today is nothing more than the corporate product Paul McCartney. He is one of the highest level Freemasons out there. He is twice knighted by the impostor Queen and one only need look at footage of the Queen in the presence of Paul McCartney to see she is subservient to HIM. Here is a man who truly sold his soul to Lucifer. He paid his dues by losing Linda, the love of his life.

      Elliott was an excellent chordsmith and lyricist, but more meek than engaging on stage. I love his timid sounding vocal style but its not for the masses.
      It's great that you can enjoy him. I tried to sing his praises to friends for years but few became as fond of his music as I did.
      I'm OK with that. I'll always revisit his songs because they evoke very strong emotions. He was an incredible talent imo.

      @keffinmckn3602 to be fair he's playing a solo set acoustic in front of what appears to be a large festival like crowd. There's videos of him with a full band in the same setting and it's received with rapturous applause. Context matters. Also he was probably either: recovering from substance abuse or in the throes of it during this performance which adds to the vulnerability of the performance. Either way I think he performed these songs almost perfectly. I watched this whole set and didn't feel unengaged once. Put Taylor Swift on a stage with a beat up acoustic for an hour plus I'd say she wouldn't fair much better.

    • @keffinmckn3602
      @keffinmckn3602 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @cityboyee There's no "appearance" of a crowd, but I can hear less than 50 people applauding after each song, so I'd disagree with you there.
      As far as the "rapturous" applause in the live settings with a band, I've seen those same videos, and you're being hyperbolic at best.
      Whether he's under the influence or in recovery is inconsequential to his timid demeanor.
      Also, I didn't say that listeners weren't engaged with Elliott but that he wasn't a very engaging performer. You know, not much of a showman or performer but an artist with incredible songs.
      Unfortunately, I also disagree that Taylor Swift wouldn't have a much larger crowd under her thumb armed with an acoustic guitar and microphone. She's a Mega star, and although I'm not a fan, I can see the difference.
      If Elliott Smith could come back for one more show, I'm sure he could fill any venue. He is more popular posthumously than when he was here.

      Whether people were talking through the show or not, I think its important that in his last show he sounded good, looked engaged, and appeared a lot healthier than he had in a long time. I'm sure there were a at least a couple people in that audience that were moved by his performance

  • @slippast
    @slippast  8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    One note about this show. I watched it 4 or 5 times this weekend. It seems like Elliott was in a pretty good mood, a bit unhappy with his screw ups of course, but generally smiling.
    There were several points in the show where he tried to talk to the crowd, like the 'it sounds like the Eagles and I hate the Eagles' bit after I Figured You Out. He seems pretty insecure and not really able to engage the crowd. But the show was free and on a college campus, so probably 80% of the people in the crowd were just there to socialize. Beyond the 3rd row it was just people hanging out with friends. Loud talking, ignoring the music, etc. It was a shitty crowd. I don't know what that means but I thought I'd mention it...

      @slippast  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Rodolfo Jalabert Well, I didn't find it, per se. I shot it with a little Canon MiniDV camera on a crappy monopod.
      Remember that I had no way to post such a long video back then, TH-cam didn't even exist for another few years, and even then videos were limited to 10 minutes or less. That limitation didn't disappear until 2010. The other heavily compressed video of Elliott playing Say Yes (which came from this tape) was uploaded by me to Sweet Addy a day or two after this show, simply because I thought that was the best looking/sounding tune.
      I lost the tape during a move about a year after this concert. About a year ago I was going through old boxes in my garage and found a bag of MiniDV tapes from that era that I had assumed were long-lost. I knew this tape was in there somewhere so I went through a bunch of painfully bad videos from film school before finding this tape. You can hear that the tape was deteriorating. The audio starts to cut out really badly in the last few minutes.
      Anyway, that's the back story.

Even if it's objectively bad, or you just hate it, another human put themself into their creation and shared it with you. If something isn't for you, move on. How about doing something constructive, like promoting the things you do like, or better yet creating your own art. xoxo

Yes I wish he lived a full healthy life, one so that I could’ve gotten a chance to see him play live and two so that he could’ve created more music. But luckily he created a massive amount of music before his untimely death. And his death was not in vain, through sharing his music he has saved countless lives.
    Thank you for recording this, for those of us who never got a chance to see him play or experience his personality it’s a blessing that there are recording of him. Such a beautiful soul, such a way with melodies, such a humble personality to go along with his music. In a way Elliott is like Jesus to me. I dont listen to him when I'm happy but I worship him when I'm ready to say adios. He's saved me more than once.

      I'm feeling that tonight, my friend. I often go back to old bands and artists i was obsessed with in previous parts of my life, but nobody has ever felt like going home quite like Elliott. It's been years since I've truly listened to him, but tonight i am crying and feeling Actually Understood. His smile throughout this set has me in actual tears, and i just wish he was still around to know what an effect he's had on so many of us, and how helpful his music has been to so many more than he could imagine.

    The most authentic musician of its time. I think we should be grateful for the amount of content Elliott actually created... even with all his suffering he never stopped composing and that's really fascinating. For all the things he went through, he actually could have gone very sooner.

    Ill never get tired of watching this. Its like im sometimes look at elliott as if am himself sometimes .. , maybe more . ..at 50 and yet ...these songs transcended the 90s...i try to share hes output to everyone i know...but i guess we are the minority....not everyone can Hear ...them unless they have been aware of their own big ,little , trivial suffering ...and happiness.

    It’s beautiful to see that I am not the only one looking for him, we all still miss him so much. 🙏🏻 He left a void behind...such a pity. So young and so delicate. We miss you Elliott.

    This is sad to watch. It happened on my 10th birthday, while I had no idea of who I am, neither who Elliott was. Even thou I've never had a chance to hear him live, nor to be a part of an era when he made his art, his music saved me so many times. I'm sure that, if I live long enough to hit 30, or 50, I will not make the same mistake that I did when I was a child, and that I'll be still boring to my friends recommending them to listen to his music.
