She doesn’t give credit to the artist who designed it but wants credit for someone matching the placement on their body of the same tattoo?! People be so petty 🙄

@@bookloverlauradidn’t she say it was her video that was taken for the viral video? I understand that she’s frustrated and a little upset because she said she posted it because of the creative placement in the first place. So when ppl on the viral video would compliment the creator of the bigger acc for that exact creative placement, I’d get upset too because it’s appropriation (even if it seems small to you).
Also maybe she did give the artist credits.

It's wild that some people say they relate to non-humanoid fictional characters more than they do people of color. "It's just not my experience" Okay, but you've never experienced life as a glowing green blob fighting demonic orcs. How can you relate to those characters if that's not your experience? You can relate to that, but not a person of color who faces a lot of the same struggles as you? Your connection to a human in an epic fantasy world magically disappears the second you find out they're not white, even when race doesn't really play a role in the plot? It's also wild how some of those same people will read manga, which is near exclusively not white, yet be able to connect with those characters. How? I thought you could only read if the character had the same racial experience as you???

I like including books in my reading that take me out of comfort zones, and expose me to things outside of what I may ever experience.
How boring would it be to only surround ourselves with books, and people, that are mirrors of ourselves.

I will always see 'relatability' as a weird criteria to assess media. If you can only read about someone who's like you, you have a bigger problem than unrelatable characters. A book getting us to empathize with someone whose experiences are nothing like ours will always be more valuable than making us think 'oh, they're just like *me*!'

    • @bookloverlaura

Agreed! I understand wanting to see yourself in characters, but to completely dismiss any book with characters you can’t relate to is absurd.

The tattoo one... yeah. The Fourth Wing tattoos are the new version of the Butterfly or Medusa tats. It's popular and tats on the wrist, around the wrist, and so forth are common. If it was included in a deck of cards, it would be the Ace of Spades.

The new kindle also has colored annotations which is something I use a lot as an annotating reader 😊 there are also graphic novels/manga/etc that work well with it.
For just regular books and if you aren't annotating with colors, it seems better to stick with the paperwhite. Especially given the price difference!

The Kobo Libra Color is a little over $50 cheaper; and is basically the Oasis (buttons), with color.
      Color annotations and highlighting.
You can access your library (via Libby/Overdrive) directly from the device.
Technically you can’t read kindle books on the device, but there are YT videos explaining how to transfer kindle books to Kobo.
I personally really like how seamlessly it works with the library. (Note: It doesn’t (yet, fingers crossed), allow for multiple library cards to be stored on the device.)

oh my god don’t even get me started on people who won’t read diversely or won’t even admit/want to have any conversation about the problems with the lack of diversity in these space!! especially under the guise of not wanting to because “it isn’t relatable”??? i truly feel like whenever this trend of media needing to be relatable to be seen as good was a bad thing actually…. like i don’t find straight people relatable but i guess i’m just supposed to suck it up??
okay to the person who was just listing a bunch of still i do wildly disagree with most of it except for the first point. i mean i’m not saying anyone has to suddenly not treat their books well if that’s what they care about but i’ve seen videos where people have unhauled or complained about a book because there’s like a slight crease in the spine or on the back cover or it’s slightly sun damaged or whatever. like the kind of thing that isn’t super severe or that gets in the way of actually reading the book. and idk maybe i’m coming too much from the perspective of not having that sort of money to throw around because a book i own is almost imperceptibly “damaged” but it’s just kind of insane to me honestly.
also completely the same way about spoilers. like i do think there are times when yeah you should have some common sense/common courtesy around spoilers like the example of someone saying they are half way through a book maybe don’t talk about things in the second half in that videos comments where the person can see them but at the same time i think this sort of spoiler culture feels really entitled. like there are things you can do to try to limit your chances of seeing spoilers on social media if that’s an issue but other people are allowed to talk about a piece of media. especially when there are people who will consider almost anything a spoiler?? like it’s just something that always puts everyone else at this disadvantage despite the fact that many times it really isn’t their responsibility to care about you being antsy about spoilers.

People have different reasons for reading. If someone is reading purely for the escapism of it, then I fully understand not feeling comfortable venturing out into more hardhitting literature about people you don’t necessarily relate to. I’m from a marginalized community myself and I would never judge anyone for the kinds of books they read. I’ve read plenty of books about marginalized people and at this point in my life I have zero interest in picking up those books because I just need a break from real life so I just stick to the fantastical worlds that offer me a corner to hide in.

@bookloverlaura Sure, absolutely. I just find it a bit ridiculous to seek out books specifically written by non-white people. I pick up whatever sounds good and I have zero qualms about it being about white people or otherwise. I don’t tend to overthink that. If people want to read 100 different versions of a faerie romance then it’s their prerogative. I get annoyed with the self-righteous behavior exhibited in the first TikTok.

    For the diversity comment.
There is an “I’m With the Banned” group that meets monthly at a library about 20 minutes from me.
It is pretty easy to know what the actual reason is for books being challenged/banned is; which is very different than their stated “reasons.”
Some people are really afraid of, and intimidated by, diversity.
I love that it has made me read books that I might not have read on my own, despite challenging myself to read more of the books “they” don’t want me to read.

The last TikTok is so silly :) I get what she's trying to say, but I disagree with her. It's got nothing to do with whether or not you want to do something; it's about the fact that you CAN'T do something. No one wants to feel that way. My brother has a chronic illness, and he pushes himself more because of this, whilst I don't have the same problems as him and would happily stay in bed all day long. For the first one, I don't believe for one second that there's anything wrong with wanting to see yourself in a book for both white folk and non-white folk.
I like reading nonfiction set in my hometown. I enjoy learning about where I'm from and the hundreds of thousands of years of history that I walk past every day and know nothing about. I don't mind learning about someone else's street, the history, and the people who called that street home, but it will simply never be as fun or fascinating to me as learning about the street I grew up on, the people who called my home (my actual house) their home, or the incredible things that happened around here.
I think far too many people believe that white equals American, and they, for whatever reason, forget about the whole of Europe/the rest of the world.
We have so much history right on our doorsteps, and we could all benefit from learning more about who we are and where we all came from.
Sure, we should mix things up, and we should take the time to learn other people's stories, but I don't see any harm in reading about you, and this goes for everyone. It doesn't matter their race or culture; it's okay to learn about your own history.
It's beautiful to learn about other people, but it's just as beautiful to learn about yourself.

      This.
It’s outrageous to me that strangers think their opinion of what someone else chooses to read is valid. If you’re reading by yourself and for yourself then your opinion is the only one that matters. We don’t shame someone for their choice that affects no one but themselves. If people want diversity then they can seek that out. If someone doesn’t enjoy reading thrillers then no one is going to tell them that they really should because diversity. Don’t worry about what’s on my shelf.

      @eezzy23 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@whitneywest3538 What you'e missing is that not reading diversely is not just affecting the reader, but can at times also affect society. I'm not saying this is the case all the time or that people should only read "diversely", but specifically for people who are slightly racist, slightly sexist, classist etc., it might help their world view to read a book from the point of view of someone from the opposite gender, another ethnicity, from another social class etc. Of course people also want to be mirrored in their own experiences, but reading can increase empathy for others and the world might be a better place if more people tried to go out of their comfort zone just once in a while.

I completely understand wanting to see ourselves in books. My interpretation of what Laura is saying, is it’s problematic when we refuse to read anything where the people/characters aren’t all mirrors of ourselves. Especially when the other creator pointed out, that some of these same readers chose fantasy on the regular.
I love that reading can give me exposure to experiences that are different than my own. And, yes, hopefully make me into a more empathetic human being.
