  • In this video we see if I can engrave some scripture on some 100 year old barn wood. This customer supplied wood has some sentimental values and I only have enough for the 3 signs they are requesting. I provide some tips and tricks on how to reduce cupping enough to get an engraving done. How to average the focus on the 4” lens we us and why we used a 4” lens. Watch and see if we work this out!

Good video. Just a thought tho, could you possibly put the lines in the middle on a different layer in lightburn & up the power a little ?

Whose 4" lens are you using? It doesn't appear to be Thunder Laser's.

American photonics 21mm tube. I sold my Thunder 4” lens with my Nova 24

Since it is just text, could you have just done the engraving in 3 different jobs? Top, middle, and bottom and just change the focus for each?

you could have, but because of the cup unless you where doing each line at a time your focus will change anyway. time is money!

I've been in the laser business since 1987 the weirdest thing I had a client bring me was a gazelle hide that he shot over in Africa. He wanted his monogram on it. Back then there was no glowforge epilog Universal were probably just a business plan. My machine was a single head LMI 75 watt CO2 a monster of a machine only did one to one engraving and it went back and forth and it took up the space of a two-car garage because the table moved side to side. My help hated me for almost 30 days we could not get that smell out of our shop to save our life!
Moral of the story is two things
One if it gives you a headache don't do it unless you have a respirator
Two be careful of what you're doing do not leave unattended if you break down what a laser is you understand that it's a light that's amplified and it will catch fire and burn these are not toys they are business tools!
Thank you for all you do for this laser community! ❤️
In Santa Ana California we would take delivery of two box cars of Walnut and oak no matter how we tried if we didn't use up our wood fast enough it would cup worse than what you're saying here.
Even with the Santa Ana winds which normally you would think would be good but they were horrible and we would always keep our shop door open because of our spray booth being so close to the door.
We ended up with a humidity room to make sure that the moisture level was a certain level so the boards would stay flat because we cut our own boards we made our own substrates for trophy dealers in Arizona California and parts of Nevada those were the old school days.
    I miss my woodshop!

Enjoyed this video. Do you have a video explaining the differences between the stock lens and the 4” lens? Thank you for all the great teaching videos!
