+CaseyCJL Thanks! I am working on some new stuff that I will release after we update our website. I have all the videos embedded there and a bunch of other free information.
+FreySmiles Orthodontics Do you think there would be any benefit in adding a natural salt to the mixture? a lot of DIY mouthwashes have salt I noticed. I'm not exactly sure how It's beneficial, but there is some info out there on how it may reduce plaque formation.
CaseyCJL Saturated salt rinses have been in use for a long time and in rural India they are evaluating them because of the lack of access to better alternatives. However, adding a little salt to the rinse probably wouldn't do much to enhance the rinse. It already contains ingredients that have a more substantial clinical effect, but I will say that it certainly can't hurt.
+FreySmiles Orthodontics If the baking soda package seal has not been opened, can I use the baking soda to make the rinse for how long? I'm not talking about a premix baking soda rinse. I'm talking about using the soda powder. I'm asking this because a friend of mine said that baking soda is only good for one month after it's been opened, since the weather is so hot in S. California.
Thank you for this. I have sensitive teeth from a history of over-brushing, but I've been using this as a rinse just after eating or drinking anything acidic. It works like a charm! Haven't had any sensitivity in weeks now.
Yes. Baking soda and water is just fine. The xylitol is mostly to sweeten up the rinse a bit. Xylitol does have positive effects for oral bacteria, but mostly when it is used in gums and mints.
Baking soda does not cause sensitivity. Acid erosion mainly damaging during the time of contact of the acids with teeth. A re-balancing rinse can help neutralize residual acids after say an acidic drink and will help with minor acidic events, but it is most helpful in addressing acid producing bacteria.
burned corn tortilla powder, salt, baking soda. Make a paste with a little water amd brush your teeth. I never visited a dentist until I was 20 no cavities. And now i wash my mouth with a teaspoon of baking soda after I eat.I brush my teeth only once I already ate and I won't eat until the next day. Still no cavities I'm 45.
i am not orthodontics but i like it when doc says something that is corroborated by my personnal experience . My teeth were painfull in several places and being now without insurance I investigate more . My impression is that low ph like pickle , vinagar solution are acidic enough to kill most bacteria causing tooth decay also solving bleeding gum . next time you have a dental pain eat small pieces of pickle maybe like me the pain will disapear
Thanks for sharing. I love essential oils, but 20 drops seems like a lot. I would start out with 10 drops and see if it is okay. I would also suggest buying organic oils, and no=te that there are some really cheapee essential oils that are not good quality. If they cost just $5 or $8 a bottle, I would stay away. I like the organic oils by the health ranger, tested for contaminants.
I am a big fan of Water, Baking Soda and Xylitol. I would however never ingest an essential oil. Even when you rinse, you end up ingesting some of it and over time (same with fluoride), and that can be quite problematic. Essential Oils are not regulated and many, even premium oils will clearly and honestly state the warning to "Never Ingest." Xylitol should make it palatable enough. Since water based products carry a higher risk of bacteria contamination, I make small, frequent batches. My amazing DIY toothpaste is Organic Coconut OIL based (no water) so I have much less concerns around shelf life and bacterial contamination. Dr. FREY: If you agree that it is also good, how much sea salt could be added to this mixture?
There are some essential oils that sgould only be used topically. However, organic essential oils, such as those i get by the health ranger, are fine to ingest such as peppermint. I also use some in recipes, such as oregano, rosemary, cinnamon, ecetera...
Thanks for this. After food and/or brushing teeth, would dabbing a damp fingerful of xylitol on the teeth, moving it around on the teeth with the tongue, and letting it dissolve into the saliva have a similar effect on oral pH and the oral microbiome?
My teeth are declination process even my dentist cannot figure it out. I thought perhaps it's due to acidic mouth as after brushing every night I felt bad secretion and smell. What do you say
Thank you for this information i already use baking soda 3 times a day i got a question is it true also works for made more soft the tartar my mom dentist told her every time she decide come to clean her teeth made sure rinse for 10 minutes with baking soda i will made more easy to remove it .

Do you really need the xylitol? I’ve been having some SERIOUS issues with halitosis this year. I keep up with professional cleanings I also had my gut checked and everything is okay. But i do sleep with my mouth open which dries it out. Ever since I started rinsing with baking soda and water, I’ve experienced much better breath. So there has to be something to it.
I keep getting holes in my teeth even though i brush and use mouth wash and along with recedng gums . whats causing this ? Could protein deficiency be an issue?
Xylitol is beneficial to the good bacteria in the mouth, plus it helps increases salivation, which is why it is recommended. It's not added for taste, though it does help with that. artificial sweeteners are toxic, even if you don't feel the effects right away.
Essential oils are so strong, doesn’t the science suggest these disrupt microbiome too much, rather than help rebalance it? ? Ps please use metric for the rest of the world.
This is all quite fascinating. What about using milk of Magnesia for a mouth rinse once in a while? It's even more alkaline than baking soda. Also, when I make my baking soda rinse, I don't use gloves. I'm pretty casual, I just add a tsp. of soda to the water, swish it around, and rinse.
+Vette gaddia But do you swallow it? Or do you spit it out? And do you have to make it fresh everyday and store it in the frig. I have so many caries that my dental bill is in the thousands a month. And I don't eat sugar or starches and brunch my teeth 3 times a day.
I use bobs baking soda it's a more "pure " kind only three $ a box, and I just poor tbsp n water swish while I shower also drinktablespoonin morning n my ph levels have gone more alkaline and my ache teeth have stopped. Sovereign silver I also swish for minutes in morning and night and inflammation has gone down. When I do eat too much sugar I am sure to drink some baking soda and do coconut oil pulling. Calm any pain I have. But years of coffee n sweets send me to the dentist today and tommorow for fillings. I'm so anxious!:(
Dr. Frevsmiles...please help me. I can only sleep for a hour at a time because after an hour, my mouth gets so acidic and bitter it wakes me up. So I have to sleep 8 times a day! I am so tired of not being to stay asleep because of all the acidic saliva in my mouth! Biotene makes it worst and so does listerine. I want to try baking soda.
Floss, then water. Most water has a pH balance of 7. The food decays in the mouth and turns acidic. Same with sugar. So again, floss, then rinse with water.
The xylitol was mainly added for flavor since the evidence suggests it is best used in gum and mints. You can make the rinse with just baking soda.
Or chew trident
Research has shown that it can beat oral bacteria (the bad guys)
Right on, I prefer to keep things simple and easy however MANY people are obsessed with taste, hence the flavor additives.
