    The xylitol was mainly added for flavor since the evidence suggests it is best used in gum and mints. You can make the rinse with just baking soda.

      +FreySmiles Orthodontics Do you think there would be any benefit in adding a natural salt to the mixture? a lot of DIY mouthwashes have salt I noticed. I'm not exactly sure how It's beneficial, but there is some info out there on how it may reduce plaque formation.

    • @DrScottFrey
      @DrScottFrey  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CaseyCJL Saturated salt rinses have been in use for a long time and in rural India they are evaluating them because of the lack of access to better alternatives. However, adding a little salt to the rinse probably wouldn't do much to enhance the rinse. It already contains ingredients that have a more substantial clinical effect, but I will say that it certainly can't hurt.

      +FreySmiles Orthodontics If the baking soda package seal has not been opened, can I use the baking soda to make the rinse for how long? I'm not talking about a premix baking soda rinse. I'm talking about using the soda powder. I'm asking this because a friend of mine said that baking soda is only good for one month after it's been opened, since the weather is so hot in S. California.

    Thank you for this. I have sensitive teeth from a history of over-brushing, but I've been using this as a rinse just after eating or drinking anything acidic. It works like a charm! Haven't had any sensitivity in weeks now.

  • @DrScottFrey
    @DrScottFrey  12 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Yes. Baking soda and water is just fine. The xylitol is mostly to sweeten up the rinse a bit. Xylitol does have positive effects for oral bacteria, but mostly when it is used in gums and mints.

  • @DrScottFrey
    @DrScottFrey  12 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Baking soda does not cause sensitivity.
    Acid erosion mainly damaging during the time of contact of the acids with teeth. A re-balancing rinse can help neutralize residual acids after say an acidic drink and will help with minor acidic events, but it is most helpful in addressing acid producing bacteria.

    i am not orthodontics but i like it when doc says something that is corroborated by my personnal experience . My teeth were painfull in several places and being now without insurance I investigate more . My impression is that low ph like pickle , vinagar solution are acidic enough to kill most bacteria causing tooth decay also solving bleeding gum .
    next time you have a dental pain eat small pieces of pickle maybe like me the pain will disapear

    Thanks for sharing. I love essential oils, but 20 drops seems like a lot. I would start out with
    10 drops and see if it is okay. I would also suggest buying organic oils, and no=te that there
    are some really cheapee essential oils that are not good quality. If they cost just $5 or $8 a
    bottle, I would stay away. I like the organic oils by the health ranger, tested for contaminants.

  • @MOAB-UT
    @MOAB-UT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I am a big fan of Water, Baking Soda and Xylitol. I would however never ingest an essential oil. Even when you rinse, you end up ingesting some of it and over time (same with fluoride), and that can be quite problematic. Essential Oils are not regulated and many, even premium oils will clearly and honestly state the warning to "Never Ingest." Xylitol should make it palatable enough. Since water based products carry a higher risk of bacteria contamination, I make small, frequent batches. My amazing DIY toothpaste is Organic Coconut OIL based (no water) so I have much less concerns around shelf life and bacterial contamination.
    Dr. FREY: If you agree that it is also good, how much sea salt could be added to this mixture?
