Building a REALLY simple biochar kiln

  • Many people would like to add biochar to their permaculture repertoire. Usually biochar makers have fairly elaborate kilns consisting of a sealed unit in which the wood fits and another separate unit around it that serves as a burn chamber. That system works, but you tend to get only small amounts of biochar and there is rather alot of waste.
    This system that I'm showing here has no waste, no separate parts and is really simple to make with some basic tools

    Thank you for your video mate, it’s a real good idea to do more carbon for bio char than if it the barrel was standing which is how I do it. I cut out three bottom holes for oxygen and draining but I notice in yours one’s sufficient.

    Hello - who give you this idea of this simple design. It looks so easy , I have experience. Actually I changed a oil barrel for burning wood inside a closed room. It is inspirated of another designer who wants to buy his plans. Problem of all this constructins - beside one, You get the vinegar and the tar inside of the coal. So nothing is worse than this, because, this agents you dont want at the roods of your plants. Thank you a lot for inspire me. Thank you Thank you Thank you

    I have been using this method for a year or so. Its cheap & effective. A word of advice, when the burn is complete make sure the contents is COMPLETELY flooded to ensure it does not reignite leaving you with a 1/2 drum of fine white ash instead of char.
    Don't ask how I know this please😖😩🙁.;

    Drums that had oil. You could fill with soapy water. Let set. Then roll it over let out enough water to be below where you plan to cut out the side. That way if it did try to blow up. There would not be much air space to catch fire. Probably over kill though..

    Do you need a hand in the setup of an intro? I'd be happy to assist and lay out the process and steps needed with the video software.

      I'm intrigued. Tell me more, but you are right. It's time for a new intro.

      @@capelandpermaculture5808 I watched your drone footage. I think - using some simple tweakage - parts of that footage, along with the proper music, can be used as flash-frames (The process wherein a standard speed* video has 2 or 3 second intervals sped up) to create a sense of dimensionality and inspire a little more awe. I'd be happy to create one for you, free of charge and link you the download file. Should be no more than 10 seconds.
      I do this because the lessons you're teaching are important and the introduction of a video is essential for capturing the attention of your audience. Please simply give me the go-ahead and I'll make it. Then, when done, post the link as a reply to you in a comment. No need to give away any personal details or share contact details to the internet.
      I'll be sure to use royalty-free music with a public license.

    No its a sign that it's not ready yet biochar is made by lack of oxygen to lockin the carbon
