Andy McKee is the Stanley Jordan of this generation. This is simply the purest and most talented guitarist I've heard, and I've been playing guitar for about 20 years.
It's and fanned fret system - it basically gives each string its own scale length and the results in tension throughout the whole neck and better intonation
I've only been able to learn two of Andy's songs. "For My Father" and "Drifting". I've only been playing for maybe 6 months, with hardly anytime to practice. I skipped the basics, and as soon as I got home from the music store, I put on my headphones, went to his videos, and went to work. I swear. I'm no homo. But if I were to ever have a male crush, it would be Andy....Seriously.....
@RIVERSHIT07 the frets are fanned like that so the notes stay in tune everywhere on the neck. on regular guitars notes fretted higher can sometimes be a little off.
Dude, do not have to say .. It was not very admirer guitar, after listening to this guy playing, I became a fan of it all .. Congratulations Andy McKee!
@TheBudhistpunk this song has a very clear and amazing structure. its very hard to hear the high notes that help to show it with this upload. look at the rpoland upload of this.
Someone's been practicing with a metronome. I think of all the new video series he's put out, this one is played the MOST perfect. I mean on a scale of awesome - perfect. How do you write all that, let alone play it all at once, let alone not be 85 years old by the time you are able.
it makes up for the loss of tuning going down the neck...(down near the 12th or higher may not be perfectly tuned to other strings because of thickness) the "fanned frets" compensate for this
helps keep intonation. much like how on a harp or piano, the bass strings are longer than the higher strings. it also somewhat is more ergonomic to play, but that doesn't really matter.
@griffinmpable It should never mean nothing. I'll bet you any money that Andy Mckee would comment his own playing as "needing improvement". It's because we are forever evolving as guitarists. There will never be a time where a guitarist will know "everything" on guitar. There is always new things to learn. Wow, listening to this guy sure makes me think such amazing, philosophical thoughts...
chimpanzee243 What gives you the right to call us autistic wise guy. You're posting in the wrong neighbourhood. Your tolerance is complete shit. If you react to something, expect to get a reaction back. And don't come up with a completely irrational thing to defend yourself. Jesus fucking christ...
coupercottage Didn't take 18,000 dollars to build that guitar. Probably took less than 2,000. Shouldn't sell for that much. Just ridiculous that we as guitar plays can't enjoy quality that players like Andy can. And if you ask me...fanned frets don't really help much at all. I understand intonation and all this...but really....you can't hear a difference at all in a nice regular-fretted instrument.
Do you have any idea what 18,000 dollars is....?? Granted. My classical guitar that I use for college and to play was 6 grand. But 18,000 dollars? Really? I know it didn't take that damn much to build the thing. So why charge over 10,000 dollars more than it's worth? Hell. You can find guitars that are handmade that sound just as good for WAY less.
That guitar took weeks to make. If you think $2000.00 is a fair amount of money for a person to spends weeks on something you must really love your job.
@crossingzero He does what he loves to express himself. Why should his expression mirror anything other than his inner being. Music is not about pleasing others.
@thesmithofwood yeah man ..you nailed it! after 39 years of playing and 25 years of applying my passion for guitar to a paycheck somehow i missed the whole spirituality thing. Thank you for sorting that out for me..did you even read what this thread was about..? ? if a string is plucked and nobodys there to hear ot did it make a sound? never a thought of making money? you must be very talented! leave it alone dude ,,clearly you missed the point completly..
i find it interesting that the earlier song was called keys to the hover"car" and now its keys to the hover"craft". just a little observation made by me
It`s maybe one of the best virtuosic song of Andy, but better recording is this elder one on which Andy wears this most-known orange T-Shirt and he`s bald :P
I used to know this song, Art of Motion, and Drifting; now I only know drifting and like halfway of art of motion. What Happpennneedd!!!???? Probably just got tired of busting countless strings on my guitar due to switching between the tuning of those songs lmao for real... I'll fucking wreck drifting still though :D
what emotion? When she cries..for my father..= much emotion...this sounds like warm up's ! Dont get me wrong folks love his body of work, but, it would be nice to see the tempo and beat change up a bit more..if yove ever listened to four or five George Thorogood's songs in a row then you know what i mean..Bro for all your picking skills and scale knowledge and $ spent on those BEAUTIFUL guitars id like to see/hear something different.
@thebtbamfan " Music is not about pleasing others. ' boy have you got a lot to learn! try and feed your family from your craft with that mindset and see how far ya get! Mearly posting a bit here is proof isnt it? Violent?brato above probably said it better than I did,, but I wasnt being technicaly critical as much as just plain calling AM out on a less than inspiring post ..
The problem with performing this song is the projection of the melody. It gets utterly lost here, and it has more to do with the fact that the melody is entirely on smaller, quieter treble strings, and the intensity of the percussion and bass notes. On the original record, it does come through; though I'm not sure how they did that. This is one of my favourite Andy McKee pieces, but it's very difficult to perform "properly" (for lack of better term).
@JakeDeArmas Not that there is anything wrong with fat latinos :) but now also I am tired of having to listen to some sort of generic VEVO pop studio produced pop-crossover-hip-hop-country-techno electronified voice screaming at me before I CAN listen to this amazing guitarist.
lionel martin The fact that you choose Kanye West out of all modern performers speaks volumes of how out of touch you are with music these days. Pop in MBDTF and tell me it isn’t a work of art.
he had the keys to the hovercar and gave us all a ride. into an insane journey.
the only word i ever have for his videos....wow!!!
This is why I’m still alive. So I can continue to listen to this👏💐Thank you.
The counter-melody at 1:27 is awesome. The whole song is awesome.
that is an awesome name for a song
The intro melts my ears every time
He probably owns a hovercar cuz Andy is just that amazing.
I finally get to see this guy live March 18th. I can't wait.
how was it?
This man has mastered his talent

This is like only one of the few good things about Vevo... Supporting Andy "The Man" Mckee

Love this guy, everything he does is just incredible. :)
kinda wanna see andy do a soundtrack for a movie all by himself. that would be sick. i would go watch that movie just to listen to the music.
wHY DOES THIS ONLY HAVE 69,000 VIEWS?!?!?!
absolute beast!
@TriviumFan15 his guitar is his hover car
look how futuristic the fretboard is!
Are those fanned frets that i see? Thats really cool. Great song.
Dude, do not have to say .. It was not very admirer guitar, after listening to this guy playing, I became a fan of it all .. Congratulations Andy McKee!
amazing!
HOW CAN ANYONE DISLIKE THIS VIDEO!?

I have a memory of me playing World of warcraft while hearing this song and it was about six years ago...
oh my god i was addicted to those games!! finding the concrete dragons and freeing them!!! thanks for that memory hahahahahahha
@thepuzzler1 It's a fanned fret my friend. It's actually more common then you think :P
thanks again for making the last 5 years of playing mean nothing hahaha
Hahaha what an awesome song title
it makes up for the loss of tuning going down the neck...(down near the 12th or higher may not be perfectly tuned to other strings because of thickness) the "fanned frets" compensate for this
so why get a fanned neck like this? what are the benefits besides the looks?
helps keep intonation. much like how on a harp or piano, the bass strings are longer than the higher strings. it also somewhat is more ergonomic to play, but that doesn't really matter.

@jamesdrobinson oh really? so it just makes the tuning absolutely perfect?
Elegant. Why can't more modern music resemble this? Oh yeah....they can't play this.
Shut the fuck up.
Mad.

Jesus fucking christ...
This is less than 10 years old, there is plenty of music like this being made today, it just isn't mainstream.
OMG IM SO GLAD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT THAT
I believe it helps keep intonation.
Hell yeah Spyro! :)
That too
@thesmithofwood exactly !!
I wonder if that's one of Ralph Novak's guitars?
why are his frets crooked towards the middle of the guitar? Does it make it easier to play his songs?
Getting mad at those 12th fret harmonics are we Andy?
Andy, play 'tales of the riverbank' and post it.
@TriviumFan15
Aha he probably has to play this song to get into it!
Which music was composed by Stewart Copeland.
Anyone else notice his frets are slanted? Or is it just the camera making it look weird? Either way awesome song!
$18,000 fanned fret greenfield guitar

Morgan Finley have you heard andy's guitars live?... he has the most amazing instruments ever

What kind of guitar is this?
whats up with his guitar ? why is it like that ?
Lovely tune you've got there though. ;)
@crossingzero He does what he loves to express himself. Why should his expression mirror anything other than his inner being. Music is not about pleasing others.
Nice, I might have to have another go :)
hahahaha i was just thinking that while i was watching it and scrolled down to see your comment
andy mckee's guitar reminds me of surrealism.

I attempted to learn 'All Laid Back n Stuff, I can just play it but this is just a whole other level 0.0.
@deepfreez09 No, Chuck Norris gave them to Andy as a gift to acknowledge his epicness.
I used to know this song, Art of Motion, and Drifting; now I only know drifting and like halfway of art of motion. What Happpennneedd!!!???? Song title led me to hope there would be Leo Kottke connections. Hope renewed.
@linDorko I Lol'd. :D
@TriviumFan15 ya i know but still
@Littleelfbailey sounds like a good idea, but that would defeat the purpose now wouldnt it? just sayn
