I grew up around Ford's. All kinds. My old man had everything Falcon from the XW onward. Zephyrs, Anglias, Escorts, all the Cortinas.. Holdens weren't even allowed on the driveway, Chevs reluctantly. No joking. I remember him INSISTING my aunt moved her Datsun 120Y out onto the road. He loved Falcons soooo much. The only time I saw him blanch is when we backed the XB into the tide launching our boat. Even back then we knew Falcons rusted faster than you could say "Made in Australia". My old man's been gone five years, I'd love an XB, I've owned loads of Commodores and a few Falcons in my time. There's a BF2 Boss XR8 in my Sunday rotation garage right now. Cos I miss you dad. When I started this post I thought I had a point. Nostalgia? Yep. I love me a classic Falcon ❤
Christ! I sold my XF S-Pack wagon in 100% original mint condition back in 1988 for AU$8,000.00. These were so shit back in the day that the extended "Ford warranty" was used to replace the following items over a mere 12 months. New transmission, new A/C compressor, new rear differential, new power brake booster assembly, new power steering pump, new complete instrument cluster, new complete carburettor assembly and new seat belts plus a few other bits and pieces. The dealer literally had the car rebuilt except the body and internal cabin components. I also got a free loan car when mine was in being refurbished so it didn't put me out at all. It would have cost them 10K+ back then for all of the parts plus labour. Everytime I received the car it just drove better and better until it felt brand new again. Then I sold it! Cheers and subscribed from SA mate.
Absolutely! Even the dealer principal was so apologetic but extremely helpful. That car qualified for a genuine Ford extended warranty that cost me AU$750.00 at the time. Your channel is great and I watch every episode. Fantastic memories for me mate. Have a great week.@@backshed5295
Watching Mick set the timing by ear brings back old memories of old Fords and Chevys with bad crank dampers/balancer...lol FWIW, a vacuum gauge can also help with timing.
My XF was one of the most comfortable and relaxing cars I've ever driven. It was really nice! I still have many photo's of it during a couple years of the Adelaide Grand Prix when I contracted to supply specialist pit lighting. Good times!
Just a thought. Many years ago with my XF, the aircon condenser fins where pushed in (caused by insect impact over time) and restricted air flow through to the radiator. After watching this has brought back memories. Great show.

I think I know what happened to that muffler. Back fire yes! Likely not from timing, not enough fuel in the exhaust to cause an explosion. With a carb and manual trans, going down the road at highway speed and your motor stalls for ignition problem, takes you a bit to realize your dropping speed, radio turned up! All that fuel is being pumped into the exhaust. I had it happen to me as a teenager in my 74 Gremlin . Pulled over, fixed my coil wire, went to start it up and BANG! I thought a shotgun went off. Got out to figure out what happened. Seen rocks blown away around the tail pipe. Looked underneath , my new muffler was swelled up😂😂😂 That's when I figured it out 😅
Love these utes. The front nose treatment is unique. Remember I'm sitting over here in the middle of the United States. We just do not see these very often in real life.
Here in NZ I have been struggling since mid-2009 to get a white '86 XF ute 'finished-off' but shonkie-as-hell people calling themselves 'painters and panelbeaters' keep ripping me off, again and again, and yet again, and again! One of the major items fully rebuilt just only four years ago was a 4 speed AOD autobox to go behind the ute's transplanted XB Cleveland bent eight donk. So, a fully serviceable, reconditioned automatic gearbox, costing around four grand all up, including a completely rebuilt torque convertor and a shortened re-balanced prop shaft. The latest 'restorer's workshop' just promptly nobbled this gearbox by removing the selector quadrant bracket securing pin.. and claiming.. a "FULL re-build is needed, including a burnt-out and 'melted' clutch pack, and burnt-out ATF". These lies and bullshit.. yet again ..by completely dishonest rip-off artists. Well, that's NZ's car tradies for you. Since 4 years ago this gearbox has had ZERO USE since it's FULL rebuild..!!

Hi Michael, you always do a fantastic job any of the work that you do I like the videos you did on the white falcon Ute what a beautiful job you did on that well done mate. Merry Christmas to you and your great family Rob
On pre O2 Sensor vehicles, it is possible to cut in just in front of the Converter. Bash out the Ceramic inside with a bar & hammer. Then weld the system back together like nothing ever happened. (Noticeable difference in power without that massive restriction right after the Exhaust Manifold.).
I'm looking for an XG or H Panelvan to put a Barra into and eventually turbo.. It would be so funny to have what looks like some ocker's crusty daily thrasher that looks like it is held together with cable ties and bailing wire and barely runs - that will all of a sudden lay waste to any traffic light warrior! 😆Especially if I leave it looking total sleeper with just widened steelies and leave the towbar on etc, put B&S ball and Ute Muster stickers on the back for good measure
I have had these early fords do that. One that imeadiately comes to mind though had a different sort of back fire , an XB that had leaked fuel into the sump overnight and upon starting blew the sump off.
Amazing mate ..u don't need to go to the gym..Ur work load on these lovely ..cars ..not yestayear..but modern classics ..Ur ideas 💡 and initiative is simply amazing ...love how u improvise.

Love watching these resto's because they bring back so many memories of when I was young and broke. Good job. You explanation on timing is 100% right and that’s the way I do it as well. I also use the starter as a guide. If it kicks back when you try and start it it, back it off a touch. If I have one minor criticism on the whole process, is the spare wheel cover is sticking out like dogs balls….. you could remove it and belt it out a bit😁👍

Lookin' good, Mick. The ol' XF looks fresh as, mate. Ready to do another quarter million, I reckon. Yeah, timing can muck around with all manner of things and cause weird symptoms that lead you one way and another and usually up the wrong garden path. Had a situation in my Triumph 2500S where it was running like crap, dropping cylinders, not wanting to idle, coughing occasionally like it was short on fuel and once it just died completely and I drifted to a stop on the side of the road shaking my head. Thought it was fuel starvation - nope. Every time I checked the pump it was chucking it out like a honeymooner's....er.....it had a very strong pulse from the pump. The carbs weren't leaking, fuel was in the bowls of the twin HS6 SUs, breather not blocked. All the hallmarks of a fuel problem, but no issues - in fact she was blowing black smoke like she was getting too much, but the carbs showed no sign. Dirty fuel? Filter was near new and looked fine. So for fun, I checked the points - good gap, opening and closing, plenty of spark at the plugs, plugs were all working fine although they were a bit sooty until I cleaned them.....but as I put the cap back on the distributor, the dizzy moved slightly. Started her up and jammed the throttle at about 1500 while it spat and farted, then went around and retarded the dizzy - and the revs picked up. Kept going until it was on the peak and listened as the engine cleared her throat and was firing on all six again - clear as a bell. Gave it a touch more of retard and tightened her down and the engine ran fine from there on. You talk about a timing light - I could not see the line on the pulley with the strobe even though I'd painted it. Checked after I'd pulled it back by ear and I was about 3 degrees out! I'd also watched that white line come back over the horizon of the crank pulley as I turned the distributor - she must have been about 40 degrees ATDC! The fact it ran at all seems to have been a miracle. Bloody good inventions those things called ears, eh? I gotta tune the P76 V8 by ear because her balancer's marks have been sanded off by some numpty back in the day, but that's a whole different story. Rapt the XF was a nice easy one. I'm surprised at how clean (rust-wise) she was underneath and in the sills / behind the rear wheels especially. When you think about how much had started to be sunk into it by someone, parking it up for a timing issue seems a bit light as a reason, but at the same time, sometimes you CAN just get done with a car and just walk away from it for a few weeks.....or months......or years. Left my Stag parked for over two years after a string of annoying breakdowns and then she dealt me that one that just broke the camel's back and I got so bloody pissed off with it that I couldn't even bear to look at the damn car, let alone replace the brake master cylinder that had shat itself coming up to a tight corner without warning. Anyway, just wanted to say I really enjoyed this one because it was like seeing Dad's XD again. Well, from side on anyway. ....and you don't see anywhere near as many as you used to. All the best.
Another Great Resto Mick. I can't stop laughing about your comment " I'm sweating like a Blind Lesbian in a Fish Market". Can't say I have heard that one before. You are as Aussie as they come Mate. Keep them vids rolling....
That gear shifter is not the strongest of things. I broke one and was kinda stranded until I used my vice grips or some such..............got the rig back to my bro's place, gota shifter out of the tool box, got the grinder out and made a slot...................now I have a shifter for a shifter! No bulldust.
Yeah more videos on the commodore sounds right. I was going to ask are there more comming as I couls see in the background it was up on stands. Drain tray under diff airea. Pinion seal? Im guessing. 🤔 thanks for posting your video's. Cheers Stew.
With the seats, I did a similar thing with my Vt commodore I’m restoring, however I took the actual fabric covers off and put them in the washing machine as I was worried about soaking the foams underneath and risking them getting mouldy. Although pressure washing them seemed to clean them up like brand new in your case. Love your work 🍺
If you still have over heating issues and the radiators is clean check the head gasket. They blow next to the head bolt that has the earth cable bolted to it. I did heaps in the 80s and 90s.
I really enjoy your videos I get so much out of them. So I went out and brought 1994 Mazda LWB Van to have a go myself. Body and interior I can do but I wish you lived next door, have gone to mechanics for repairs and I seem to be in the to hard basket. (parts) It is running and driving. Thank You keep them coming Cheers Michelle.
Thanks Michael. I was in the middle of a mouthful of food when you said “ I’m sweating like a blind lesbian at a fish market “ 😂 food every where.!!! Never laughed so much. 😂😂😂😂😂

Cheers mate 🍺🍺👍
These videos are so satisfying, keep em coming 🍻

That gear shifter is not the strongest of things. I broke one and was kinda stranded until I used my vice grips or some such..............got the rig back to my bro's place, gota shifter out of the tool box, got the grinder out and made a slot...................now I have a shifter for a shifter! No bulldust.

Great job mate keep it up..👍🏼
Heaps more coming mate🍺👍
With the seats, I did a similar thing with my Vt commodore I’m restoring, however I took the actual fabric covers off and put them in the washing machine as I was worried about soaking the foams underneath and risking them getting mouldy. Although pressure washing them seemed to clean them up like brand new in your case. Love your work 🍺
Cheers mate , yeah a couple of 40+ degree days sorted them out Hahhaha🍺👍
If you still have over heating issues and the radiators is clean check the head gasket. They blow next to the head bolt that has the earth cable bolted to it. I did heaps in the 80s and 90s.
🍺🍺👍she seems all good mate🍺👍
Love the way you roll. Cheers mate keep them coming

Thank You keep them coming Cheers Michelle.

Hey,
I've just stumbled across your channel. Looks like I'll be stickn around.
You know I traded my old 1990 XF panelvan/x cop car in a new Ford ute 18yrs ago, I got $200. I'd driven that car around the clock twice and still on the original transmission. Your Ute's coming up a treat.
✌️ Peace from Melbourne/Pakenham.
Cheers mate and welcome 🍺🍺👍
You got a good run on that xf, was it auto or manual?
5 speed mate 🍺🍺👍
