    Love the idea of you recommending hip hop songs that remind you of the songs you're reacting to, I think you should make that a regular thing. It's always great having the experience go both ways

    This was based on a true story Kurt read in the paper. The victim was eventually able to escape from her attacker and he is still in jail. Kurt added the part about her pretending to like him in order to get away. Nirvana did an electric version of the song before settling on the acoustic version. This was recorded before Dave Grohl was in the band so it’s actually Chad on the cymbals and Kurt doubling his vocals.

      Sad that that sex offender had been sentenced to 75 years for doing this in the 60s and was released only to do it again to a 14 year old in the 80s.

    This song is an excellent example of Kurt's unique and special gift for songwriting. As others have pointed out, this song was inspired by a true story abduction, torture, and rape of a young girl. The incident broke Kurt's heart. Kurt often used his art, and his platform to speak out against rape, sexism, and violence. And this song is an example of that. But it's also sho much more.
    Lots of people write songs about pain, or calling attention to important issues. Not many people would write a song about brutal torture and rape... from the point of view of the RAPIST. The girl isn't the protagonist of this song, and her abuse isn't being addressed passively or objectively.
    Instead, Kurt puts you, the listener into the scrambled thoughts and demented urges of a monster. He recounts with almost indifference the most gruesome and appalling thoughts. You are, as the listener, meant to be unnerved. It's supposed to be disturbing, and haunting.
    Because Kurt doesn't want you to just pay lip service to how terrible rape is, or how unfortunate this girls story was. He wants you to be as troubled by it all as he is. He wants you to remember.

    Great reaction... I recommend you to listen "Paper Cuts" by Nirvana it's even more darker than this one. Also based on the true events. It's the song that introduced me to Nirvana and I'm in love since then. I have my own personal interpretation on that song very close to me. I would love to know your interpretation and perspective on that.

    Yet another great reaction. I don't know if you have listened to this or not, but Nirvana's biggest song is Smells Like Teen Spirit. Besides that, Heart Shaped Box is considered one of their best by many fans. Glad you are diving into Nirvana's music, they are such an amazing band.

    Oof.
    There are literally zero "Fun" Facts about this song.
    This BGV is actually Kurt, though Dave sang BGVs live and is recorded on the Unplugged version.
    The boldness of writing from the perspective of the perpetrator is both terrifying and legendary.
    Recommendations - live songs with great videos that really capture the vibe of each band member: Breed (Paramount);
    Radio Friendly Unit Shifter (Live and Loud).

    the interesting part is that this song is darker in terms of the lyrics not the sound. it’s a r@pist POV kinda, based on a true story of a 14 year old girl getting kidnapped and tortured. luckily she was able to escape him.
    this song and r@pe me always fascinated me, they’re connected in a way, both are dark and about a heavy topic.

    • @wantutosigh1117
      @wantutosigh1117 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sound of this song is dark too. The tone is crazy. Kurt playing on a beat up acoustic guitar that doesn't stay in tune, bass, and a symbol. With Kurt double his vocals in different octaves.

    • @nadyavishnyakova8297
      @nadyavishnyakova8297 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You really would do better to read up on the actual band or writers meaning BEFORE listening to the songs. So sooo many songs, are cryptic…not only because that’s the way the writer wants to share it, but also to be able to say what they need to without too much blowback. Kurt knew what he was doing and he did it masterfully. But try to check out the band stories before listening and even watching some music videos!!

      I think when encountering a work of art it is valuable to form your own impressions before learning what other people say about it. This allows you to connect genuinely with the work without someone telling you what you should think about it. If you do your research second, then you will get more out of it. At least that's how it is for me.

    I think the lyrics here are a bit lazy, considering the subject matter. Nick Cave was always better at this kind of thing. Listen to "The Mercy Seat" or "Do You Love Me" or any of the Murder Ballads LP. I love Nirvana, but my only critique is the lazy lyrics. Don't hold up well over time. Too slipshod, like Kurt didn't really give a fuck.
