Even the chippy is a luxury these days
That's not _even_ a joke.
Fish (Cod) and fries here in the US is getting stupid expensive as well.
@@rareblues78daddy Bad isn't it
it costs more relative there then it does now even during cost of living crisis
it is now when they charge 14 pound for haddock and chips, wtf
@@kamikazilucas Oddly enough, I'm going to my local "chippy" today for dinner. Two pieces of Cod, and some chips x2. It's gonna cost me at least $20. Stupid.
Fantastic, I worked as a delivery driver at Tarrys on a Thursday and Sunday night 40 plus years ago, old Dom was a gent. Imagine how he would see it now as a multi pound business with Uber, Deliveroo etc 😳
You mean multi-billion pound? 😁
The stainless steel insulated container is more high tech than today. That chippy was also selling as much variety of food as a modern place, had rotisserie chicken even! Something that wasnt explain is how the introduction of television in Scotland harmed their business in the first place.
Tarry’s is now The Magic Kitchen (3***) Chinese takeaway. One review says “it’s better to collect than wait for delivery” 😅
Way ahead of his time this guy. Hope he made it.
yes his name was phil deliveroo
He got sucked into a deep fat fryer and was turned to a crisp
It’s apparent a 3*** Chinese takeaway now
I love how he just hands her PILES of food and expects payment after her hands are full.
Well of course he does. He's got piles if other food for other customers, that he has to deliver in 15-20 minutes. 😊
Seriously though, it seemed like it was rushed for TV purposes. The whole thing was a rushed and awkward exchange, for sure. They could have at least done a second take, after she dropped some of the food.
@@northernsnow6982 yeah, hardly a good advertisement, dropping the food on the floor when its delivered, and clumsy when exchanging.
The price he quotes for fish and chips here in 1963, 1 shilling and 9p, adjusted for inflation is now equivalent to £2.22 in 2023. Can't get fish and chips anywhere for even double that these days.
Appreciate the conversion, I did wonder. I suppose footfall was a lot higher then due to limited options and cost of ingredients no doubt much lower.
@@Mkbshg8 CPI calculator suggests closer to £4-5 (shilling is 12p but really its 10p) still cheaper but not quite 2
@@johnpickering2008 Thanks. That seems more realistic.
Love how she is all like posh using supper and he all common and normal. And chips hot peas haha
I never knew they did deliveries in the 60s!!! When they had the chippie where I grew up that shut down in the early 90s you had to go and get it yourself!
fair dues!....that grub looks lovely !! :))) '63 ... I wasnt even a dirty thought until '68 :)))
Thanks for showing us this look back in history. It is very informative, and nice to see.
Thank you.🙂
I like how the sound eng has added in the frying sounds
He looks very contemplative as he puts the phone down and walks off like hell need to have a good think about all this
Just what I was thinking! He should have got his skates on, given that they only had 15 minutes!
i love the archive
Fascinating. I note the sound cuts out early at the end. I assume someone in the studio was speaking as happens when news reports end
'Alright, the phone rings, what happens then?'
I've yet to discover Mr Tarry's response but I'm guessing they answer the phone
Door dash doesn’t use a metal pot. We got jipped
So enjoyable to look back. I wonder if the pricing is relative to today's?
@@andys5841 So 12 old pennies to the shilling, 20 shillings to the pounds, so 240 old pence to the pound. So if a £1 is worth £16.70 in 1963, 24 old pennies would be £1.67. So 2 shillings equal 24 pennies so a fish supper plus delivery would be £1.67. Delivery 21p so from shop a fish supper would be £1.46p
@Stephen Roney so that'd make it about £24 with delivery today
@@geninio97 Nope. It was 1s and 9d in old money which is only £1.46 in TODAYS MONEY. Everyone could afford the chippy then. Imagine a fish supper today and change out of £1.50.
@@stephenroney2366 Oh wow, that's crazy!
I make £1 in 1963 almost exactly £20 today, so 1s9d would be £1.75 today, if not more.
2023: Can no longer afford going to the chippy.
All becuase. Brexit.
@@EllRiver
Yep
@@EllRiver Certainly didn't help.....
£3! For regular chips , what a joke
@@joshclarkethemudlark8048 It is rediculous
Deliveroo could use those stainless steel containers!
Wow excellent video, I’m off to the chippy, anybody need anything thing
Get us some chips Gazza..
@@CamperVanPersie plenty of vinegar
@@garryleeks4848 Yes Please mate...
Jumbo sausage please fella
I want that delivery car , what is it ?
Aye so looks like us Scot’s where the pioneers at helping people to get fat by firstly removing any need to move off the couch to get yer dinner and then years later we invent the deep fried mars bar.
Doing God's work mate
@@krognak god was Scottish I think lol
"May be the old man has drank the housekeeping." Grim.
Without the £3 'small order' fine
Thruppence
Love it
Whatever happened to mobile fish and chip vans? They used to come round our area in North Manchester back in the mid 1960s to early 1970s. Shortly aftrwards, they disappeared, never to return. Alas, the days of fish and chips being a cheap meal are long since gone, today they're as dear as a Chinese takeaway meal and nowhere near as good value.
Revolutionary!
Tarry's don't tarry when the chips are hot & the Mini Van is waiting.
In Scotland, chips are 1 of your 1 a day.
If you look on any diet sheet, potatoes DON'T COUNT as one of your 5 a day vegetables. They score zero.
This guy was an innovative genius! If only he could see the delivery services that exist today.
Got my food delivered by drone yesterday .. how times have changed ..
Add Deliveroo to the loooong list of Scottish inventions.
L🤫L
Now our local chippy uses deliveroo and uber eats.
So ... 1 shilling and 9 pence in old money for a fish supper in 1963, if you buy it in the shop. That's just 8.75 pence in decimal currency!
Bigger fish stocks; cheaper. Potato quality wasn't as stringent; cheaper.
Also, look at the meal size. The serving is smaller than what we'd expect (or accept).
Am I wrong in thinking they are all professional actors? I recognise the woman and the owner as being in dramas of the time.
Fab!
Amazing. Doesn't tell them her name, address, nothing. Fifteen minutes, those fresh, piping hot chips are at her doorstep. No money is ever exchanged. You just don't get free psychic chip deliveries nowadays. A bygone era.
Food delivery? Nah, it’ll never take off!
What did she drop at 3:34 ? Sounded heavy
Door Dash invented in Scotland
Chicken looks tasty
Now these days only takeaway can do delivery but no chippy 😔
Seniors, our local branch of chippy does home delivery still. For which I'm very grateful.
You drapped yer peas Mrs
Did somebody say
…
I knew she was going to drop something. She should have paid him first then taken the food!
He didn’t give her a chance bending over the container straight away and oiling everything into her arms haha
He be needed to hire more driver's if he had internet than to keep up with the flow of orders to send out for delivery in 15 20 minutes
Present day delivery time 45min up 59min aur probably more Depends like Friday Saturday nights
Good ole Scotland being 50 years ahead of the rest of the UK especially England
Um, deliveries have always been going on in England
Delivering fried food... not exactly neurological research or space exploration, is it? But, well done all the same!
With binge drinking
@@tonyhancock3912 yeah boozing away the housekeeping 😂
He did delivery before it was a thing
Ahead of his time by quite a distance.
She's a class act. I'd go round for fish and chips anytime
THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO HOME DELIVERING AGAIN, BECAUSE A LOT OF FOLK, ESP. THE ELDERLY, CAN'T GET OUT TO THE CHIP-SHOPS.
This will never catch on!
We all know that the price of fish makes fish & chips seem kinda pricey nowadays. But if you think about it. Coffees can cost £4-5 , a cold basic sandwich around £4, a pint of beer £6. So the current price of fish & chips of around £10 doesnt seem that bad. Even the meals at burger king cost that much.
It really does seem that bad especially given how terrible most is.
@@byteme9718 When compared to a Chinese takeaway, fish and chips is now poor value for money. I've not bought fish and chips from a chip shop since early in 2023, when our local chippy started charging £8 a portion.
@@paultaylor7082 I agree.
Back when life was worth living
Now we have Just Eat, Uber Eats and all that.
Would like to know if this chip is still in business if so where? Probably might be a kebab shop now hope not .
This business is now long closed down, one of many businesses in the city which have long gone
Oh my god it is about £10 for fish and chips these days 2023 inflation an killer 😢😢😢
yes indeed, here in Torquay the price is creeping up constantly :/
It'll never catch on!
"You know the old saying about Muhammad" well Muhammad owns most of the takeaways now!
And he didn’t even ask for her address
He got it from the milkman.
(1:27) If you're getting fish and chips delivered tonight, because the old man's drunk all the money, and you haven't got any house keeping money.
🤔
You have our sympathies.
Back in the day, people would be able to get food or drink on lay till payday. Because everyone knew each other. So no money = fish supper. ☺️
@@D-LL2141 Bit before my time.
Very interesting.
Thanks.
It'll never catch on.
Fish and chips is sadly only for the rich not for the poor anymore 😢
Why is he driving on the wrong side of the road though😋
Manse Road was a one way street.
Well, then. Proof we don’t need this internet thingy.
Telephone voice.
2023 the kebab that delivers
It's not the price of fish & chips that annoys me..... It's the fact that a lot of chippies offer rotten greasy food!
Sorry for where you live
Uber eats in primitve times..
The good old days when your fish & chips were cooked in animal fat!
