- Shirakawa-go is a mountain village in northwestern Gifu Prefecture and is known for its gassho-zukuri villages. The village, which has a unique landscape, was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, along with Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture.
"Gassho-zukuri" is characterized by its thatched, steeply sloping roof, which is thought to reduce the amount of work required to remove snow from the ground due to heavy snowfall, as well as drainage due to the high rainfall in this region.
The combination of rice paddy fields and Gassho-zukuri villages, not to mention the cherry blossoms and autumn leaves, is a reminder of the traditional Japanese village atmosphere.
Hakusan Shirakawa-go White Road (former Hakusan Super Rindo) is a 33.3km long toll road connecting Shirakawa-go and Hakusan City in Ishikawa Prefecture.Especially during the autumn leaves season, the scenery is so beautiful that it has been selected as one of the "100 Best Autumn Leaves in Japan".
There are many waterfalls along the route as well as a view of the famous mountain Hakusan (one of Japan's 100 most famous mountains), especially Fukube Falls with a drop of 86 meters and Ubagataki Falls with a drop of 76 meters, which are worth seeing.
Ubagataki Waterfall is located along the Hakusan-Shirakawa-go White Road in southern Ishikawa Prefecture, and has been selected as one of the 100 most beautiful waterfalls in Japan.
