Motsunabe's patience was immaculate throughout the whole set, backing off when he didn't feel like he could get the hits in safely, something so many people don't exercise at all. Then when he had his advantage he made it count and chased Banham down the entire time. Banham played incredible as always, but this could've easily been a loss if Motsunabe didn't appear to start panicking at the end there. I think the stress of almost beating Banham got to him, lol.
It’s surprising to see absolutely no lasers coming out from Motsunabe. There were a lot of moments where a laser or two for edgeguarding or recovering could have made it harder for Banhams position.
Fun smashy bros fact Japanese people shorten protobanham’s name to just banham as opposed to how he’s shortened to proto abroad so I apologize if I pissed you off by calling him banham like a billion times
this commentator is so wrong about wavebounces. floaty characters get such good spacing value out of it. Saying it didnt work a couple times is anecdotal, protobanham is top notch for a reason
I was going to comment that, sees 2-3 wavelanding get punished and one was just a hard read (sideb into backair in game 1) and thinks they're bad. Ignores the wlands that got him better spacing and whiff punishes. 5:57 fakes movement to get an aerial, and 4:44 for spacing and a dtilt
Agreed. Also, jumping to the whole "If you use this tech and you aren't playing Melee, you're just trying to copy protobanham, and he is the only one allowed to do that because he is good." This is the toxic annoying mindset that shouldn't be in the scene. Obv people are going to learn from top players, so why is seeing and imitating parts of his playstyle an issue?
You answered your own question bud. Yes, he does it as a mixup like at 9:39 where he gets an up air from it - so more percentage than a throw and keeps them in a juggle situation.
Hard to say, he doesn't optimize as much as Tilde does combo wise or edgeguard wise, but his neutral is very very good. So comparing them is like comparing Mr.R and Leon back in the Brawl days; too close to tell.
@ATARi _HMB That pretty much sums up Japan vs NA. Its not always about optimization. Tilde to my knowledge has never beaten a top 10 player with his flashy 0-70 combos. But if his netural was better I'm sure he would've beaten one by now.
This is one of the best sets I’ve seen in a while. Montsunane can absolutely COOK, and Proto managed to pull through with a win in spite of how well Montsunane was playing. Plus I think that he is the only person on Earth to make Lucina hype. I do feel like tho that Montsunane got discouraged after he missed the double dair in game 3. It seemed to affect his confidence.
Motsunabe has a lot of good skills, but he has GOT to improve his recovery. Good gravy, that was atrocious. Very predictable, continuously making poor high risk/low reward decisions (e.g. aggressive side-b against a ledge-trapping Lucina) when safer options were available (e.g. when Lucina is hanging back from edge, then just go directly to ledge for safety)
It does make me sad that wavedashing in ultimate really doesn't do anything. You linger for so long afterwards that you're kind of just free food. Not sure why they brought it back only to neuter it to the point of uselessness. There was certainly a middle ground between melee's WD and Ultimate's that would've been pretty satisfying. And I still think it's criminal that when you waveland on to platforms, you're stuck on them and can't slide off.
It's nice to see protobanham play again, feels like I haven't seen much of him since summit or maesuma top 10
oh shoot hi scoot
@@Greeds_ yooo what's up
Yeah he’s been making lots of online content though and we will see him at summit :)
This is his first tournament of 2023. His last one was in December.

I hate this idea of patience... Seems like a Falco thing 🤣 for me it's better to mixup your options rather than wait for opportunities to fall to you
Saving that shield break for a set clinching kill is sooo fucking cool and smart. Proto makes this game so fun to watch
Proto does not do Neutral B often when he plays Lucina. But when he does, it hits like a bullet 🤣
It’s surprising to see absolutely no lasers coming out from Motsunabe. There were a lot of moments where a laser or two for edgeguarding or recovering could have made it harder for Banhams position.

It's interesting because it's like their referring to his last name. And we to his first name.
I'll call him toban from now
ngl kinda pissed me off lol. Lucky you didn't say that while I was there or we would've had a problem heh.
great commentary all around man, made the game that much more enjoyable
I second that. Appreciated the other commenters reactions too, lol
The most impressive thing about this set was making Lucina look hype

what a great set to watch, theyre both so damn good

やはりバナムルキナには数字が伴う。アートなんだよな。
Idk if proto is a genius or if he did that by accident but turning around to avoid the grab at 1:43 is INSANE
Protobanham is too surgical on the shield breaks
Proto had that man’s shield scouted from game 1. Even I noticed that he was relying way too much on it. That shield break was inevitable.
that Up B to seal game 1 was fucking insane only he looks for shit like that
This Falco and his side-b's 😂 Surprised he didn't punish them even more than he did
6:04 "He's beating the shit out of him." That made me laugh out loud.
Banham-sama is precise aggression. My GOAT of Ultimate
Edit: did anyone see the HOLY binder?
anyone want to explain why proto does grab release a lot, does anyone think it's a good mixup or is it a missed chance to rack up more percent
You answered your own question bud. Yes, he does it as a mixup like at 9:39 where he gets an up air from it - so more percentage than a throw and keeps them in a juggle situation.

He mentioned he does it on purpose, so he can space better keep the chase going after the release.
@@andy764 my only reservation is the release can be aerial or grounded and grounded releases seem less consistent to follow up unless you are jabbing
motsunabe might be better than tilde, considering the fact that hes been popping off recently and beating players like yoshidora

To be fair they didn't "bring back wavedashing". They brought back directional air dodges, which just happens to be what allows wavedashing.
