Everyday she alters who she is to fit into a new image of herself, but everyday she takes a little bit away from her identity (the sphere in the woods). There are messages (letters) from family/friends who are concerned, however her fear of accepting herself manifests this into something monstrous. Eventually what was once a beautiful dense construct is stripped down to nothing. One day she wakes up with no identity or direction as she wanders aimlessly into the distance.
that's an awesome interpretation, and i think you're right! my initial thought was that it represented the vague anxiety and monotony associated with growing up. she's going through the motions of life, doing what she's supposed to, stripping away pieces of her past in the process. she sheds the beads of childhood and starts cooking pasta in a dorm- it's more grown up, it's what's expected. she gets married not because she wants to, but because she has to. she has children, gives them birthday parties with cowboys like children are supposed to have, becomes an elementary school teacher because she doesn't know what else to do. she wakes up realizing how she's wasted her life trying to do everything a life is "supposed" to be, even though none of those things are what she wanted. the reason i think this is because of her to-do list at the beginning. it seemed contrived, forced, and set the tone to the video for me. maybe i'm totally wrong but i thought it was an interesting idea
This is the living example of songwriting maturation. Amazing low end throughout the song and the chopping up at the end and the tremolo guitar stuff is so haunting and well put together.
It really does go to show how they've metamorphized and grown as a band over the years. I must admit, I wasn't really feeling Everybody Is Going To Heaven or As You Please upon their initial releases, but as the years have gone on and I've matured more, they've really grown on me. They're both fantastic albums, but I just had not grown enough to be able to accept them at first.

Change isnt easy for everyone to accept but i just saw them live and they have so much dynamic. Pull off whatever sound they wanna have. Every single album is different and i have mad respect for that.
I cant lie, first 4 listens i was pretty iffy. But now i look forward to coming home and putting this on my speakers and just zone out with me,my self and I. Really stoked for this release .
I knew Citizen since Young States. I really loved Youth. I didn't liked everybody is going to heaven and at first I really didn't liked As you please. But now I got really into it and I love it! You can't compare it with Youth and As You Please, just because they're both the best records of Citizen!

I really feel the video and the música right now. Like since I started college I've become a shadow of myself. I used to be more curious, passionate and interesting and now I feel like I just exist and that makes me sad. I think that beign bussier made me stop doing the things that I love
Love this song so much! I've been listening to this album over the past few days and I'm quite pleased. As a huge Brand New fan, and I liked them before I started listening to Citizen, I don't really hear Brand New in this for multiple reasons. If anything maybe the bass tones. I feel in this album Citizen really pushed to mature as musicians and lyricists and they definitely succeeded. I'm really proud of how far they've come. I loved EIGTH as well. Again, I don't think we should compare Citizen to Brand New. Citizen has tremendous talent and they are quite unique in their sound and their chord progressions. Both are unique and the latter is definitely prominent in this album and their last.

Personally I really dig the sample. It feels almost ceremonial or ritualistic. Kinda gives a creepy vibe and the lyrics almost reflect that "blind worship" vibe when referencing the Maelstrom.
I see this as a metaphor for life and death. At the beginning she is recording a voice memo on her phone, talking about socially acceptable things she should do with her life. This begs the question, "What is our purpose?" Are we meant to lead "normal" lives, have kids, conform to a certain purpose? This segment also brings attention to the fact that we are all so wrapped up in our phones, and it could be implied that we are lonely because of that. The different outfits represent different events in her life. For example, the wedding gown could resemble getting married. The sphere represents how we lose parts of ourselves and morph with time and experience. The car could be seen as our bodies. Our bodies are how we navigate, they are our vessel. In this film, the car is how she navigates to get to the sphere. I think it's important to note that she isn't driving the car. This gives the viewer a sense that she is not really in control of what is happening. It's also important to note that she has to go through the woods to get to the sphere. It seems to be in the middle of nowhere. This could be a symbol for how hard it is to find your true self. As time seems to pass and she goes to the sphere in different outfits and alters the sphere, she crosses off pictures of herself in those outfits. To me, this symbolizes crossing things off in life (like getting married, having kids, birthdays, travels, other life events). This symbolizes events in life that she has done, times of her life that have come to an end. Every time she comes home there is a note at her door. As time goes on she just leaves these notes unopened and piled on the floor. These notes represent death. Her leaving the notes and not opening them symbolizes her putting off death. It could also symbolize how we as a race put off thinking of death and don't really have an acceptance around it. The notes seem like they have her name on them, meaning death is calling her. When she crosses off the last picture and opens the note, there seems to be blood on the page. She is scared and throws the letter, trying to avoid death. She is woken up by a figure struggling and the paper says, "come home". I think the idea is that when we die we are coming home. She gets in the car and rushes to the sphere only to find it is gone. She is confused. Then she is on the ground draped in a sheer white cloth, with the pieces of the sphere she's taken off over time. She rises and walks into the distance.
The first few times I listened to it I was like meh but now it has definitely grown on me just like Jet, so excited for Citizen to release As You Please, I've been a fan since Youth came out
This is the first time I've listened to anything Citizen since Youth... And I knew I should've left it that way. I love Youth in its entirety - it's a perfect grunge rock album and I fucking knew I'd be disappointed if ever listened to anything else by them... *sighs*
My impression of the music video is that she's lost in the rush of life, always planning out her next steps and never living in the moment. Taking layers off that thing in the woods represents going through different stages- plastic balls for youth, flowers for marriage, idk maybe the ice cream cones and crayons represent memories like going to the beach or having kids. Those letters stacked up represent messages to live in the moment that she ignored. Then, the dirty body wrapped in the "come home" sign represents her dying alone in a car crash or maybe getting murdered, and her family wrote that sign since she was missing and they couldn't find her body. Lastly she runs and finds that thing is gone, her time is gone, and the final scene where she takes off the shroud is her finally acknowledging her life right before she dies. Anyone got any other interpretations?

I don't know if I'm the only one or not, but: I absolutely love Youth and I didn't like Everybody is Going to Heaven at all. I haven't even listened to it since the week it came out. BUT I'm in love with this new sound and especially the "and I'm the middle of it all" part.
Im getting a citizen vibe from this track
Nah it sounds more like citizen
Ryan Garrison really? To me it's more of a citizen like vibe with a hint of citizen in there
It honestly sound like citizen mixed with citizen also mixed with citizens album citizen
its kind of like citizen with a little bit of a citizen vibe in it
Nahhhhh totally isn't citizen this is obviously bring me the horizon

Damm dude spot on ,i lowkey feel like tht its not a good feeling.

Great interpretation, I think that's right.
Just.. Thank you.
I love you Citizen, keep changing.
Never boring. Never constant.
This song and "Jet" have already sold me.
Its like they took Young states and Everybody is going to heaven into one to please all.
Anthony Jordan Covarrubias you don't know shit about this band poser, hundredth is the new vibe
ivan martinez weeeeeaaaak
I agree, they combined elements of both styles without taking a step back in their progression. Jet might be one of their best songs.
youth*
loving this new sound!
Try Deja Entendu
This album is about to be everything I've ever needed. The best friend I can vent to every night.
I love you guys. Thank you for making me less lonely
This album has stuck with me for years. It reopens old wounds sometimes but what can you do?

In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
I saw you there
Fellow dies with no one there to care for him
Wondered what the world is like outside his room he’s living in
A normal man that dressed himself in women’s threads
He remembered every word, her face, her body in the shade
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
I saw you there
Sorrow; the unpredictable has found a hand to hold
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; you are my only god
Absent into the fog, I succumb to your every want
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
I saw you there
She’s the one that everybody marvels at
Delicate with her voice and flowers strung across her head
She’s the one that everybody notices
She thinks about an older friend, his face, his body in her bed
Sorrow; the unrequited lust that follows everyone
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; my undecided trust
Absent into the fog, I succumb to your every want
I wasn’t ready for this
Been strung out looking for a signal that was never there
I wasn’t ready for this
Suspicion reaching down to touch my fingertips again
Sorrow; the celebration halts, the blinding lights are gone
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; my love for you is strong
Absent into the fog, I succumb to your every want
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
In the middle of it all
these are some deep shit.

This band has come so far from pop punk and it's great

This feels like the familiar exhaustive task of trying to find your purpose in life and going through different milestones and changes and thinking, "this is it this is the one I'm sticking to," just to realize it's not what you want and changing your mind over and over again. Losing yourself and beginning to not recognize yourself anymore.
Keep making the sound you want. Andy Kaufman esque ending, people hitting their spacebars like old tv sets, love it.
Sorrow; the celebration halts, the blinding lights are gone
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; my love for you is strong
Absent into the fog, I succumb to your every want
I cannot wait for this new sound of citizen
La combinación perfecta entre Youth y Everybody is going to heaven, de lo mejor que han sacado
first we get new music from turnover in a couple days and now this..i fucking love you run for cover records!! 🖤
Heard the new turnover album. Pretty good but it lacks the sing along bridges like PV has.
This is so damn good, I can't describe how good it is.
I really feel the video and the música right now. Like since I started college I've become a shadow of myself. I used to be more curious, passionate and interesting and now I feel like I just exist and that makes me sad. I think that beign bussier made me stop doing the things that I love
They're definitely heading in the right direction for this LP. A new vibe with a good taste.
I haven't heard a song this good in years. Wow.
I always listen to Citizen when I want to die......
Their songs cheer up for me
They progress every album. Just go along for the ride.
AAAHH I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS DARN ALBUM
ALBUM OF THE YEAR!
This video is such a great tie with this song... I can't stop watching this.
On repeat all week baby. 😚
I love all of their songs, they are making a masterpieces
So it's bugging me what this is about, but I'm gonna take a stab at it: I think it's about moving on, beating depression and getting better. The pictures are of her trying to do different things to make herself feel better. The letters are intrusive thoughts. The science project thing in the woods is what she's "making" of herself, trying to change her habits. The version of herself that rises out of the letters is her depression trying to over take her, and it looks like it ended up ruining everything and taking her over again.
I will never stop listening to this.
literally every song citizen makes is a banger
Being a fan of Citizen for so many years- seeing them grow and create this album is truly beautiful. Going to the shows at frankies- to being on tour in washington and performing with huge crowd, and seeing your music hit over 1.2M people is amazing. Do a show soon in toledo again, ill be there like usual :-) you guys are doing great.
We are slaves to love, devotion measured yet fractured in the sincere experience. Our personal journey is heartache measured in every calculated predictable moment in spite of our beautiful short falls. Enjoy what brings
Not really feeling this track.
It may grow on me. The entirety of Everybody is Going To Heaven did.
Update: I was right. Found this stuck in my head while at work. GG Citizen.
I agree 100%
I love the concept of this video, you guys just did a incredible job.
The cinematography in this video is awesome!
Personally I really dig the sample. It feels almost ceremonial or ritualistic. Kinda gives a creepy vibe and the lyrics almost reflect that "blind worship" vibe when referencing the Maelstrom.
The best part about all of this. Only about 80 people are attending this concert in my city. So i can sit back and listen to chill vibes. (:
When the harmonies started I was like "is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?"
SaME OMFG
Love both bands
Aside from the fact the song is genuinely amazing, who ever directed and wrote this music video did an amazing job of making me feel lost and confused
First "Jet" and now this... Looks like the upcoming album has everything it needs to be amazing.
aites this track is diff, but legit unique. it will slowly grow in me
Was not expecting this new sound. I can dig this
this album drops at my B-day . This make it even better
Gonna come right out and say it but this is probably the best song they've ever released. This album is gonna be the tits.
I see this as a metaphor for life and death. At the beginning she is recording a voice memo on her phone, talking about socially acceptable things she should do with her life. sorry i wrote a novel of analysis but the video and song are soooooooooo beautifully crafted fam
That recording at the beginning is "Fitter Happier" off of OK Computer by Radiohead
This super close to what I believed was the symbolism of the video. Ty❤
Citizen have outdone themselves. this is great.
Can't wait for this album drop
I'm convinced this record will be their best yet! Very exciting indeed...
The first few times I listened to it I was like meh but now it has definitely grown on me just like Jet, so excited for Citizen to release As You Please, I've been a fan since Youth came out
I guess this song will be on repeat until the album drops
Love the parts she's listing things off, prefer it actually. And the distorting/breaking up at the end is perfect

This is the first time I've listened to anything Citizen since Youth... And I knew I should've left it that way. I love Youth in its entirety - it's a perfect grunge rock album and I fucking knew I'd be disappointed if ever listened to anything else by them... *sighs*
This album is flawless, but go off I guess.
bruh bands evolve lol what'd u expect
My impression of the music video is that she's lost in the rush of life, always planning out her next steps and never living in the moment. Taking layers off that thing in the woods represents going through different stages- plastic balls for youth, flowers for marriage, idk maybe the ice cream cones and crayons represent memories like going to the beach or having kids. Those letters stacked up represent messages to live in the moment that she ignored. Anyone got any other interpretations?

Wondered what the world is like outside his room he's living in
A normal man that dressed himself in women's threads
He remembered every word, her face, her body in the shade
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
I saw you there
Sorrow; the unpredictable has found a hand to hold
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; you are my only God
Absent into the fog
I succumb to your every want
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
I saw you there
She's the one that everybody marvels at
Delicate with her voice and flowers strung across her head
She's the one that everybody notices
She thinks about an older friend, his face, his body in her bed
Sorrow; the unrequited lust that follows everyone
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; my undecided trust
Absent into the fog
I succumb to your every want
I wasn't ready for this
Been strung out looking for a signal that was never there
I wasn't ready for this
Suspicion reaching down to touch my fingertips again
Sorrow; the celebration halts, the blinding lights are gone
Absent into the fog coming home
Maelstrom; my love for you is strong
Absent into the fog
I succumb to your every want
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all
And in the middle of it all

ladam97 but EIGTH was good :/
Another great track.
brand new? i love this!!!!
I don't know if I'm the only one or not, but:
I absolutely love Youth and I didn't like Everybody is Going to Heaven at all. I haven't even listened to it since the week it came out. BUT I'm in love with this new sound and especially the "and I'm the middle of it all" part.
Still beautiful
I always feel like my headphones are breaking up at the last 20 seconds of the song
this is masterpiece
RIP DAVID BOWIE I wonder if the intro "In the Middle of It All" vocals were actually sampled from Blackstar. Really cool sound
