The brilliant lyrics. The mesmerizing music. The golden voice.... 45 years, and still flying below the radar in the right way. The The fans are a privileged lot.
'Truth sits on the Gallows, Lies sit on the Throne'..............Matt Johnson has to be one of the most underrated British Musicians of the last 50 years
classic tune !- so refreshing to hear someone writing lyrics about the Orwellian world we're living in - seems obviously - but strangely silent in the music world
Undercover of the Night by the Stones is a great song the really captures the feel and essence of living in a dystopian nightmare but it was released 40 years ago
Mainstream 'artists' are, like politicians, all bought and sold by the big money, as far as I can see. The The - not compromised, and this is a great song and video
This track didn’t grab me at first, but it’s starting to work its magic on me now. 40 years with Matt Johnson and he still has something to say to all of us.
Same here but the more you listen to the lyrics of the new songs the better they get. He is bang on the money with the current state of the world, which isn't good 😢
New material from Matt Johnson and The The is medicine for my aching blue soul! Thank you Matt.. I Look forward to seeing you with the band in both London and Seattle! ☮️🙏☯️
I'm not saying this to show off but I was educated at cal and Harvard and being the child of immigrants I learned more him and them in middle school in the 80s. He definitely helped shaped my pursuit of knowledge although I was raised my open minded south Asian parents. I truly adore him!❤
Whereas some other artists are pure sellouts to the narrative, Matt Johnson's The The continue to deliver razor sharp messages through their unique artistic view and talent ! The essence of Matt Johnson's The The is eternal.
It's an earworm, I'm having trouble not hearing it. The The songs have haunted me since Soul Minning came out, and this latest addition is now firmly stuck.
@@JamieLeeKnoxville I loved all the music from the punk, post-punk and, new wave period. And while I knew a couple songs by The The they were never really on my radar. Only in the last few years I have discovered their catalog and I can fully appreciate what Matt writes about. I'm a huge fan now and look forward to catching them live this year.
@otterpoet.......'The The have been active in various forms since 1979 [in fact Matt Johnson first tried to form the band in 1977']. Better late than never I guess?
I have been a loyal fan since I first clamped my ears on Soul Mining at the age of 13. And low and behold, as always, Matt "gets it". On point. Thank you Matt.
A masterpiece of a song and video. Matt has captured the Zeitgeist again in a way that he's seemingly always been able to do. 25 years since NakedSelf, yet this track sounds so fresh and worth the wait. It augers well for Ensoulment. The best things in life sometimes take time to get right. It takes lots of hard work to make things look effortless. This all somehow puts me in mind of Bowie's The Next Day. Thanks Matt, you are peerless and the band sound better than ever. Keep on keeping on.
Respect to Tim Pope and all involved, to James Eller who drives this song, to the soul of the composers shining brightly in this age of inversion - ❤❤❤ - blowing through the antiquated left/right paradigm, see you in Montreal.
I've been enjoying the song over and over each day since its release -those unmistakable Matt lyrics and a rhythm that only The The could deliver. And now, receiving this incredible gift from Tim Pope and the crew... a mind bomb. Thanks to Matt and everyone involved for being my muse and inspiration, constantly igniting my creativity and passion - challenging our perception in ways few others can.
Superb -- and very timely! Classic The The sound, freshly updated for the 21st Century. Looking forward to the new album drop, and to seeing you at the Beacon Theater in NYC later this year!
Absolute CLASSIC tune...the whole album is a masterpiece. Music, lyrics plus artwork on the album are no less than BRILLIANT. Manchester Apollo 30/09/2024 here we come... can't wait.
Despite the huge and uneven gaps between studio albums, The The have been a sound track to my life. Caught them live once at Reading 93 when Dusk was my most played album of that year. A unique act and this new single is up there with Matt's finest. Great to have them back.
Love love love this! You inspired me to be a songwriter as soon as I heard Burning Blue Soul and Soul Mining and you stiĺl inspire me today. The world has never needed you more than now, thank you for being you and can't wait to see you at Rock City, so excited!!!
Perfect. Glorious. Transcendent. Exactly what we all need exactly right now. Do you hear it? Your own challenged, proven, doubted, redoubtable, reclaimed in the glare of clearest logic mind, hurt, beaten, and from distraction reborn, misled, redeemed, and fighting now in clarity. Real, Carl Sagan clarity... The cognition that refutes boloney. Your own, hard won, stalwart brain is your last ally.
Superb. See you in Toronto. I know I said this on the other video, but I just can't believe I got front row, just slightly off-center seats. 30 years I've been waiting. And now I'll experience it, bringing my 16 year old son Matt to his first concert. I've never anticipated a concert more than this.
I've been listening to The The and Matt Johnson's brilliant music and lyrics for 40 years and I'm really glad he's releasing a new album, I have to say Tim Pope did a great job as the video director, thanks The The.
When I first heard the track, I thought it was decent. I decided to persist because its a big deal to have a new 'The The' song...I'm glad I did. It's got better and better with every listen and gets me even more excited for the upcoming tour. Matt is saying all the things we've been thinking since the pandemic....that many are too afraid to say - scared of being called a contrarian or put into a box by the mainstream. People say that musicians shouldn't get involved with politics but I like that Matt clealry disagrees. He's got a platform and he's willing to use it to voice his concerns of where our future as a world lies, fair play. The lyrics are on point and it's clear to me that Matt has as strong a voice against the powers be as ever before, perhaps stronger. Glad to see your star is shining brightly! Now can't wait fo the album.
Your voice is the most soothing voice to my soul...Amazing video and song. Love the words projected on your mouth, what a visual. Brilliant Matt! I can't wait to see you in October in Denver!!!❤
Fantastic video that suits the style, the lyrics, and the times. And Matt is looking awesomely healthy and strong! 💪😎🤙 Edit: I'd call this Mindbomb 2.0! 🧠 💣

I would also say Paul Weller when it comes to lyrics of interest
I've now concluded that this song should become a national anthem for 50+ year olds who are wondering how simple things have become so confused.
I'm not wondering. This is all by design. Long planned by Technocrats and social engineers.
