in my opinion taking rest days seriously is way harder than working out every day until having an injury. It could be so easy - just listen to your body. You won't die from a "to easy session" or a "too slow progress" since most of us are not professional runners. But you definetly will regret pushing to hard, when having an injury because of it.
I run everyday. The routine makes it easier to stay motivated and I enjoy the daily endorphins. 4 miles at 9 minute mile pace is the sweet spot to avoid injury.
This was really helpful! As someone who has had an overuse injury in the past (not stretching didn't help!) I have come to understand the value in Not Running Every Day!! Especially since I have always done my running not for the sake of running itself--but as a necessary part (cardio.) of my two main sports: tennis, and (especially) curling. And as I am getting older as well...I am now basically planning in a week: 3 runs (either 30 mins. timed, or 5K) interspersed with 2 interval runs (Walk 5 Run 2:00 Walk 1:00 X 7) and 2 speedwalks (usually on the days I do strength training). This allows to me to keep cardio. up for my aforementioned sports, while at the same time preserving the health of my knees...
I'm aiming for a sub 3 sometime in my life and currently did a 1:44:30 HM. I used to do the 1500/3000 back in high school and then some road runs in college and now I'm training for HM/10km while looking to do my 1st marathon maybe in 2027. Across all my time spent running (which is pretty intense and usually for months on end), I've always stuck to a 5 day running plan. It works myself to get some good time to use, doesn't totally exhaust and rob all my time and also prevents injury. When I start marathon training someday for sub 3 I guess I'll have to break it but I recommend anyone who's targeting any goals and aren't too experienced to not do more than 5 days a week
Interesting post👍...I find that I like to be out of the house for an hour or so everyday either running or walking in my local hills, I mix it up with 3/4 MAF zone runs and the rest brisk walking, so far I have not experienced any of the symptoms you mention with over training, I think running everyday would be to much for me....
It takes a lot of time and dedication, but when you get to the level of running 5-7 days a week the mental and physical benefits reach their peak effect.
I am 73 from India. I run walk run daily 15 km Perdana. INJURY FREE. NO MEDICAL ISSUES. I LOVE RUNNING DAILY MORNING. RETD AND LOT OF RECOVERY TIME FULL DAY AFTER RUN. IS IT OK.
This video came when I am trying to run everyday since 10 days and I am developing left knee pain even at rest, inspite of religiously doing warmup, Post run Stretches and foam rolling and strengthening. Thank you Coach and team
I have found thru injury or flare up of my IT Band you need to do Pre and Post stretches for the IT band to minimize your chance of injury and not to run everyday I run now every other day and on my off days I strength train and ride the bike at the gym. This has worked for me so far since my injury Im 49 yrs old and just started taking running seriously this year goals are half marathon and marathon. Good Luck !
Great advice, I have dropped a couple of runs a week in order to do strengthening and mobility work as I have been prone to injury. It has been working for at least
Very helpful. Thanks coach. Can you guide me if I’m doing fine or if I am at risk of injury? I’m running everyday coz I find it the most convenient and enjoyable. I’m overweight so I’m hoping this also helps me to loose fat. My stats Height: 160 cm Weight: 77kg Age: 27 Gender: Female Avg speed: 6kmph-7kmph Avg distance: 4km Diet: Eating whatever I like and reducing junk. Although not measuring but trying not to overeat. Probably an avg of 2000 calories daily
I’d you want to lose weight you need to restrict calories. I’d say you should only eat around 1300 calories at maximum if you want to lose weight especially if you are female
On a similar subject, I'd love to see the coach's response to how many kilometers one should run (and can run) per week? And on that topic, if its ok to build up to a certain weekly mileage (eg: 100km or 160km) and stay there (with the odd down week every 3rd or 4th week)?
I am 51 year old n running 3days in a week n walking rest. My total running per week is 50to60km n running marathon for long time. Is that ok or should increase to 4 to5 days a week.
3 days a week is excellent at your age the objective must be enjoying the effort and not hurting your joints! Keep the good work! Maybe add some biking or swimming
It's ok as long as you are comfortable.. it's a very subjective question. I run 3 times a week that's my sweet spot.. if I run daily I get shin splints., So it's very subjective..
If you feel good, of course it is! I would recommend rotating you shoes, running on soft surfaces, preferrably barefoot, and taking your easy runs reaaaally slow if you wanna decrease the injury risk a bit. I'm doing the same, even running a lot of doubles and I'll try to get to >10 runs per week. It's all in the recovery, nutrition and running form (strength training also helps of course). Some Kenyan runners even do triple days, no need to limit yourself..
Love the Coach Parry channels, but this interviewer I heard several times prior is much too loud! Very distracting and can barely listen to the subject at hand. No disrespect intended, we all need to adjust at one time or another :)

I can't stop, I've tried to have a day off. My mental health suffers.

Mix it with running on the bike to preserve joints

I've been mainly focusing on distributing my load and have had some very good exercise doing this, thank you Coach Parry

pro tip : you can watch series at Flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching all kinds of movies during the lockdown.
I ran every day and got a hip stress fracture that didn’t heal properly and needed surgery after 8 months. I learned my lesson. 32 year old female.

Excellent advice! So far whatever Ibjave watched on coach perry seems to be logical and helpful.

Some watches provide information about how long you should rest after exercise.
I think those are good recommendations.

I can only do 3 days right now . If I do more my knees hurt . Maybe eventually I’ll work up to 4 days
Thank you so much!
Practical question and direct advice.
I watch a few different videos and this one is the best for the question.
Keep it up 👍🏻
Brad, instead of "Welcome ONTO..." it may be "Welcome to". I could be wrong, but I feel that the "on" doesn't fit.

If you want to lose weight you need to run with a heart rate around 150bpm.

Great suggestion Michael!
I don't run every day. On my rest days I just jog 4-7 km.
What about 3 days per week?
Should a person run every other day? Or should a person be able to run all four days back to back?
I would not do 4 hard runs back to back. Alternate hard and easy days next to each other so you don't get an injury.
Not back to back run 4 out of 7 days that's fine.
Don't do more then to days in a row.

I run 10 kilometer everyday. it will help you if you run every day, I can run 10 kilometers in 26 minutes after a month of traininig.

As long as it is not very long and not very fast. 4 to 8km per day is fine.

so is it better to run 4 days on and 3 off or alternate days? This wasnt mentioned for the casual runner
Take enough rest between session if you run with buddys always on sunday thats fine.
One day on, on day off. Is better.
