The current iteration of Top Gear (i.e. post - Clarkson et al) demonstrates quite clearly the chasm between motoring journalists doing motoring TV (Chris Harris) and ‘TV presenters’ doing motoring TV (The two muppets). Dump the presenters and get some passion and knowledge back, a bit like the boys here.
The post 2002 Top Gear was scripted but by motoring journalists. Google Stephen Porter / sniffpetrol. Him and Clarkson worked together. Having motoring journalists and entertainment presenters in the same person was why it worked. Having 3 people with both talents make it amazing. Harris is good, Rory was good. Paddy can present but you know he's just read autocar before the cameras roll. Matt leblanc was a car fan but couldn't present. Flintoff in everything he's in looks like he's just won a competition to be there
I'm totally digging this format.
Stories are good, guests are fun, audio is on point, laughs are fantastic.
I prefer to watch it (double screen) rather than listen, facial expressions add a lot

I know it wasn’t the aim of this podcast, but is anyone else really angry hearing Rorys story about the unnamed car company refusing to allow him to drive the cars?
Note: not angry at Rory for telling the story or at car throttle for showing it, but angry at the fact that it happened in the first place, it’s a sad world we live in, when a person is judged in that way.. really boils my blood.
To Rory however, I feel you are correct to work with said company, I hope it was just one person and not the company as a whole.

Rory was very vague with the story, & didn’t have any concrete evidence that it was a race thing. (I’m not saying it was or wasn’t, there’s just too much assumption going on here). If said company were being racist, then it’s obviously an absolute disgrace, however, it just could have been a coincidence with change in company policy/new management at the time (after Rory had submitted his license). Until you’ve heard both sides of the story, no one can judge.
@@pulso7784 my thoughts exactly he was asked a direct question as to whether or not it was because he was black. They said him specifically, what that says to me is the issue is with the individual not the race. Again if it was due to race then shame them publicly and he would be well within his rights to do so and I’d be the first to back him up but he didn’t answer it
I used to work as a manager in a garage a few years ago, I remember a car coming in for a repair, the customer asked us not to open the boot as it was faulty, I can also remember the smell from this car was horrendous and the summer heat was making it worse. A couple of days later we heard on the local radio that that customer was arrested, what was in the boot? His wife who he had murdered and kept in his boot for 10 months. I'll never forget that smell.

Hearing the story of the discrimination against Rory was very sad to hear. Makes you wonder how many industries would truly shut their doors if given the chance
Genuinely a shame, wonder which manufacture it was ?
I have been discriminated against as well, and I am white. discrimination of any kind is bad.
But some people (not Rory Reid) still keep on pushing the narrative, of white privilege and being white makes you inherently racist.
It's as if they want you to become racist, so then they can go about and be the victim.
This undermines the fight against actual racism.
Reminds me of a story Carl Hartley (a prestige motor dealer) told about a man who wanted to treat himself to a 430 spider. Another dealer had such a car for sale but didn't offer to sell or even deal with him as he entered the showroom in his work attire. Can't remember his occupation, but it probably would have looked out of place. Carl had the same model Ferrari for sale, but at a higher price than the dealer where the customer just got turned down. He bought the car from Carl, drive straight back to the very dealer who wouldn't deal with him and showed him the higher price of the car he just purchased from Hartley.
That's more or less a story from Carl himself on customer service

So nice seeing Rory in an unscripted environment. Found it so hard to watch Top Gear as it just felt so ungenuine, but watching this makes you realise he's a pretty cool guy.

I really liked Reid on Top Gear and this pod cast has made me like him more. The racism section needed to be said and you could tell it’s had an impact on him.
Rory is such a chilled guy. Really enjoy his candor, seems you could chat with him the entire day, and not get tired.

With my first car, I used to get pulled up once a week, until the local cops learnt the car and left me alone. Since then I think we're getting on for 10 times I've been pulled up, mostly for random breath testing, but sometimes for little things I've done - like forgetting to turn my lights on in a city. I also lost my licence but that's another story.

Absolutely shameful treatment, and he told of his experiences in a way that showed no bitterness, he's going to give the car an honest review. He was the top presenter on new TG. I had never bbeen bothered with Auto Trader have now subscribed now I know he's on it.

Has for high mileage diesels. I was a Taxi driver for many years. Two of the best where a Peugeot 406 estate 1.9TD. I did 360.000 then i give it to my Son and he put another 100.00 on before it was rear ended and wrote of. The second was a Skoda Superb estate 2.0TD It did well till 220.000 then the dumbass dual mass flywheel died. I replaced it with a solid flywheel conversion and new clutch and starter motor. At a cost of £600 I ran it has a taxi till it reached 400.000 and then i give it to my Son. High mileage ex Taxis aren`t worth shit. Has for the young driver 21 and needing a lot of space for a wheelchair I would say Skoda Octavia Estate 1.9 or 2.0 TD. They are cheap to buy and insure and are very reliable hence so many are used has Taxies. Great show Lads.

Rory did the right thing to NOT mention the name of the car manufacturer. The actions of one person or dealer is hopefully not a reflection of the manufacturer as a whole.

After doing some research I think it's Dodge, and on top of that googling "Rory Reid Dodge" doesn't pop up with him next to any dodge car. Meanwhile googling his name with almost any other car company something will come up.

I completely agree about the miles on a car (km here), it all depends on how it's been treated.
Bought my first car with about 105k miles (175k km), that car was a lot of fun for as long as the engine lasted. But it didn't get any love or proper maintenance from me at all.
I also had an Opel Astra GSi (Vauxhall Astra MK3, GSi), cosworth C20XE (redtop) block, 217k miles (350.000 km) on the clock and it ran so incredibly smooth. I loved that car, still do. The car itself wasn't in best shape but sold it nevertheless and it's still driving around.
Now I'm driving a '00 WRX (GT Turbo) with 165 miles (266k km) on the clock. Love it. Needs maintenance which it's currently getting, but all cars need maintenance. Didn't have any doubt buying this car more than a year ago.

I used to do odd jobs on a small farm and the worst thing I've ever smelled was a dead sheep that had been buried in a shallow grave for a week in the middle of summer. Whoever buried it the first time had done a piss poor job and as the thing had swelled up while decomposing it had broken the surface and the smell was eye watering. We had to dig it up, drag it out of the hole then dig it down to a proper depth before reburying it and my god that was the worst day of work in my life. We tried all the tricks you learn dealing with the normal bad smells of a farm (vics vapour rub on your top lip, masks, cotton wool up the nose, wrapping a wet cloth round your face etc.) but it made little difference.
As for bad things to spill in a car I once forgot to properly secure a bucket of fishing bait that was soaking in liquid krill (similar to shrimp) when driving home from a fishing trip and it splashed everywhere. Had to gut all the carpets out and burn them as well as pressure washing the boot and dumping a couple of kilos of baking soda to try to soak up what was left. Luckily it was a car I used for work and as such was a generally stinky mess anyway but that stink never quite left until I eventually scrapped the car about a year later. Certainly wasn't sad to see the back of that one. It was a 1.4 Xsara estate (possibly the worst car ever made but stubbornly hard to kill) known as the green turd so no great loss to the world.

I had a similar story, I had this guy who used to pop into the garage and liked cars, I bought a BMW 528i manual which had a turbo and big intercooler fitted, it's was mega quick and I took him for a ride too try and scare him. A couple of days after i noticed a strange pungent smell coming from the passenger seat, it was mid summer and the hot weather really didn't help. After day 5 the smell was beyond bearable, I reluctantly sniffed the seat thinking my scared passenger had leaked some body fluids in my attempt to scare him. But the seat cover was not where the scent was coming from. 3 days after that I couldn't even bear to drive the car and I begged a friend to help me find the problem. He opened the passenger door got on his knees and looked under the passenger seat where he pulled out this plastic packet of dog tripe that I remembered my friend gave me frozen to try my dog on and I took it off the seat and put it on the floor when this guy got in. And of coarse with the exceleration it shot under the seat and I forgot all about it. It was like handling an unexploded bomb trying too remove the packet as it split and did not want to spill this ransed liquid into the carpet. But luckily the smell went within a week.
Rory mentioned dropping a 205 from a crane....surely this would be a fitting end for that StreetKa?!

in regards to miles, if a car makes it to 150k+ miles, it has been taken care of, a car can go at 20k miles or 220k miles, but to get to 220k miles, its had a lot of love and care!
Rory is just a great guest, didn't expect him to be on here! I think you could get one of the original TG presenters if you tried, I'm thinking James May would be the most willing. But also Jack asking about an estate with lots of boot space I say get a PH1 Yaris, the rear seats are on a slider and you can make the boot massive plus in it's day the 1Litre VVTI engine was the most powerful 1 Litre ever made.
James May wasnt an original presenter of TopGear....The original presenter of TopGear was Angela Rippon in 1977

I've got an Octavia vrs 2.0 tfsi petrol at age 21 with a few mods(exhaust, intake, wheels, lowered) , got the car for £3k with 77k full dealer service history and I've put a few little mods on. My insurance was £700 without the mods, about £800 now with! So if you're around my age worth a look (I also only have 1 year no claims because I was on my dad's insurance for first couple of years). Some top tips for you lads!
