Hi I normally don't put a hole in my vases so they can hold water. I also seal them with clear varnish inside and out. I do put a drainage hole in my planters to drain off excess water. Hope this answers your question. Many thanks for your awesome question 😁
I just found your channel and am fascinated by your artistry and imagination. Beautiful work! I do have a couple of questions though....can one use only plaster or does the 'powder' have to be a mix of both white cement and plaster?? Second, what grit sandpaper do you use to smooth the edges and remove the cardboard? How long do you allow the product to dry and still be able to cut in details such as patio stones, window edging, etc.? And finally, could you show a close up of whatever pottery tool you're using to make those carvings? Meanwhile, please keep your videos coming. You are inspiring!
Hi Dana, welcome to my channel. You can use only Plaster of Paris for this project. I leave to dry and set for 4 - 6 hours and use a hard plastic stylis to carve my design. You can also use a metal nail for engraving. Leave to completely dry and then seal with varnish or clear lacquer. The sand paper is 80 - 120 grit. Hope this helps. Best wishes to you and happy crafting 🥰
Beautiful planters! Can the ones using plaster be used with real flowers that need watering? If not is there anything that can be done to make watering possible? Again absolutely beautiful
Hi Deb, I seal my pots and vases inside and out with clear varnish, so they can be used with real flowers and plants. Many thanks for watching and best wishes to you 🥰
Wow, superb! How do you store the unused cement mixture so it doesn't dry out? Also doesn't your pieces crack after some time since you don't use sand or are they permanent?
Hi Charity Great question! I store all of my materials in air tight containers. I also have no problems with cracking and they last a long time. The white cement is not like regular cement , it is also known as gypsum and is awesome for this type of project. Best wishes to you 🥰
I've watched several of your videos. You make beautiful designs that give me great ideas for my own designs I'd like to try. However, I have several questions. I'd appreciate answers from Kandoo Arts & Crafts or from others who use plaster as an art medium. 1. I saw that you use gypsum rather than plaster. Where do you buy it and about how much do you need for one of your projects shown in the video? What is your ratio, water to gypsum? 2. I looked online and saw suggestions to add wood glue to plaster & water to make it stronger. Have you tried that with either plaster or gypsum? 3. Can you make the gypsum waterproof so that water can be used on the inside of a vase? If so, what do you use? (If this can't be done, I will design mine so that an inexpensive glass or plastic container can fit inside for fresh flowers, or used without for dried or artificial foliage.) 4. One of my ideas will require me to use two cylinders (I plan to use plastic jars with the tops cut off), one inside the other to make a cylinder. Then I want to carve holes in the sides of the result. How long will gypsum remain soft enough for carving? Can I keep it in an airtight plastic bag to keep it soft longer? The only thing I ever made from plaster was a small sculpture I carved from a block of plaster I molded in a milk carton. But that was about 40 years ago and I can't remember how long it was soft enough to carve. I do remember I worked on it outside to avoid plaster dust in the house. 5. Do you have a website, aside from your TH-cam videos? 6. Just curious. What country are you from (if you care to share)? I see lots of comments in English, Spanish, & Portuguese. I'm from the U.S., but I lived in Brazil for a while, so I understand Portuguese & can usually figure out Spanish because it is similar.
Hi Carol, I buy all of my materials from my local art supply store in 1 kg bags for easy storage. You can also buy plaster and gypsum powder from builders merchants in larger quantities but all of my projects use less than 1 kg. I have never tried wood glue in my mix, sounds like an interesting idea! Gypsum can be quite brittle, so I'm using plaster of Paris more. It is super easy to mold and carve and is my preferred choice of medium at the moment. To make my pots and vases waterproof I use clear varnish inside and out. I am planning on building a website in the future so i can upload templates and other photos of my projects as well as links to my channel. I hope this answered some of your questions. Many thanks for watching! Happy crafting and best wishes to you.
