I think they were staying in the cup because most of them were in it and they were sticking together as a loose group. In the clips they appeared to wander a bit before returning to the other roaches. I've heard roaches are a very social insect so that's what makes sense to me. That or maybe they were sticking to the cup because it smelled more like them.
Roaches are social. If you get Madagascar hissing roaches, the older ones will stay on the outside of a colony to try and scare predators away by hissing. The younger ones are on the inside protected by other members of a group.
You can’t believe how loud I laughed and how long it took for me to stop laughing at the “And that was last time I said dirt” immediately followed by “Lets add the dirt-“ 😭😭
I have never seen emerald roaches before! They're beautiful! 10/10 I used to have a small colony of tiger roaches. They were very fun! I had some that even seemed to enjoy coming out and being handled. And the most excited insect I think I've ever seen was when I put some fresh blackberries in their food dish, and watched one of my big ones come investigate!
I learned like 10 years ago while feeding dozens of species of reptiles that not all roaches are like the ones that infest our houses. About 30 out of over 4,600 species of cockroaches are associated with human habitats. The rest are just bugs, some pretty, some look like pill bugs, these emerald roaches look like pretty pill bugs actually. I like them. And they're slow, they just walk around. They don't scoot up your arm in the blink of an eye or fly around like an alien infestation. I used to feed my monitor lizards, bearded dragons, and geckos Dubia roaches. They're a little less pretty, but just as chill.
I think of them like weird beetles. There are a lot of diffrent kinds in the world, they come in many diffrent shapes, sizes and colours and can be surprisingly cute. I kept dubias as feeders and pets untill i grew allergic to them. They had food preferences and were even social with each other. Theyre definitely a misunderstood genus.
